• Is it possible to chain -ms-filters in CSS?

  Does anyone know of a way to chain the proprietary filter properties in CSS. For example I have a div.example and I want to give it a background gradient and a drop shadow. So I'd like to do something like this: div.example { /* gradient */ filter: progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.Gradient(startColorstr=#cb141e78,endColorstr=#cb1dde78); /* shadow */ filter: progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.dropShadow(color=00143c, offX=0, offY=3, positive=true); } Except this will of course leave only the drop shadow. Anyone know a good workaround?

  If all browsers supported attribute selectors, we could easily do the following: input[type='text'] { font:bold 0.8em 'courier new',courier,monospace; } input[type='radio'] { margin:0 20px; } input[type='checkbox'] { border:2px solid red; But I don't think all IE versions of ^ and greater support this. I think I'd like to avoid skins. Not sure why, other than I tried them and I recall having a negative experience. It was probably my lack of knowledge. Are there any issues in using and CSS, external or otherwise? What's the best way to handle this? Currently I am assigning separate classes to each control type.

• Express highest floating point quantity that is less than 1

  I was doing some rounding calculations and happened upon a question. How can I express the highest quantity less than 1 for a given floating point type? That is, how I write/represent value x such that x < 1, x + y >= 1 for any y > 0. In fractions this would be x = (q-1)/q where q is the precision of the type. For example, if you are counting in 1/999 increments then x = 998/999. For a given type (float, double, long double), how could one express the value x in code? I also wonder if such a value actually exists for all values of y. That is, as y's exponent gets smaller perhaps the relation doesn't hold anymore. So an answer with some range restriction on y is also acceptable. (The value of x I want still does exist, the relationship may just not properly express it.)

But I just can't disable the filter for the the links. How do I do this??

  Hello, I have to write a javascript function that is returning the current size (in px) of a div. Unfortunately the div has its weight specified in % instead of px. The style of the div: position: absolute; width: 100%; height: 100%; And my width returning function: function getTableWidth(tableId){ var tabWidth = document.getElementById('pt1::tabb').children[0].children[0].style.width; return tabWidth; } tabWidth is '100%'. Is it possible to return the px width instead of the % width ? NOTE: I don't have access to any html/css , as the page I am working on is generated through a complex framework. I can only embed javascript.

• Why and when should one call _fpreset( )?

  The only documentation I can find (on MSDN or otherwise) is that a call to _fpreset() "resets the floating-point package." What is the "floating point package?" Does this also clear the FPU status word? I see documentation that says to call _fpreset() when recovering from a SIGFPE, but doesn't _clearfp() do this as well? Do I need to call both? I am working on an application that unmasks some FP exceptions (using _controlfp()). When I want to reset the FPU to the default state (say, when calling to .NET code), should I just call _clearfp(), _fpreset(), or both. This is performance critical code, so I don't want to call both if I don't have to...

• Best way to position a two part background in CSS?

  Hey All! I have a weird background I am trying to figure out the best way to style it. So, there are two parts to the background image, the top part which has a unique horizontal and vertical design (its about 1024x700) then a bottom section that has a unique style horizontally, but can be repeated vertically . (1024 x 1) Right now I have the top section being a background image for the header, the problem is that it screws me up for styling all of the page content because it is so big! What would be the best way to code a two piece background like that in HTML and CSS? Thanks! Kevin

  I've been working for a guy whose been teaching me css. I made a website based on his designs which I'm pretty proud of, but he got back to me saying that I need to explicitly declare the padding, margin, position, and overflow (specifically every item should have "overflow:hidden") on every item. Is there any basis to this at all? Is there anything I can use to refute this? I thought that declaring something like div,span,h1,[...] {padding:0;margin:0;postion:static;overflow:hidden} would take care of everything due to the cascade.

  I have this html: <div class="object-box"> <img ... /> <span class="caption">This is the caption</span> </div> Which is accompanied with this CSS: .object-box .caption, .object-box img { display: block; } .object-box { border: 1px solid; } I would like the surrounding div to shrink-wrap to its contents. I can achieve this by using float: ... or display: inline-block. However, I'd also like it to be centered on the page, using margin: auto. The two approaches don't seem to be compatible. Is it possible to create such a shrink-wrapped, centered container, without adding a wrapper element?

  I'm working on a grails-based web application that will be composed of a couple of different grails projects, each developed by a separate team, which will eventually all be unified under a common "portal." So they need to have the same look and feel, at least to some degree. Is there a "blessed" way to share resources like this among projects? Something using the grails plugin architecture maybe? Would it make sense to just create a separate lightweight project containing nothing but the css and any shared resources?   Is there a way to write style rules that will only influence text fields. Suppose I have the following: <div id="helloDiv"> <input type="text" name="something" /><br /> <input type="checkbox" name="somethingElse" /><br /> <input type="submit" name="go" /> </div> div#helloDiv input { border: 1px solid red; } The problem with the above CSS rule is that it will affect ALL input fields not just input text but also radio buttons, submit buttons, etc. So is there a cross browser solution to affect just one type of input field within a div or other page element (without resorting to assigning the input fields styles individually).

  As detailed here among other places, the only valid characters in a html/css class name is a-z, A-Z, 0-9, hyphen and underscore, and the first character should be a letter. But in practice, what characters are in fact supported by most browsers? More specifically, I wonder what browsers properly understands a slash (/) in a class name, and what browsers support class names starting with a number.
