  • Does a Distributed Version Control System really have no centralised repository?

    It might seem a silly question, but how do you get a working drectory set up without a server to check out from? And how does a business keep a safe backed up copy of the repo? I assume then there must be a central repo... but then how exactly is it 'distributed'? I always thought of a server-client (SVN) Vs peer-2-peer (GIT) distinction, but I don't believe that can be correct unless tools like GIT are dependent on torrent-style technology?

  • TortoiseSVN 1.6.8 missing repository browser in Branch/Tag "To URL" dialog?

    It seems that in TortoiseSVN 1.6.8 (on Windows), when you click the "To URL..." button in the Branch/Tag dialog, it now pops up a generic "browse for folders" dialog. It used to pop up a Repository Browser. Displaying a regular folder browser isn't much use, since you can't navigate to any of the tags/branches via the file system. Does anyone know if this is a regression or a deliberate change? Any possible workarounds (other than reverting to 1.6.7, which works fine)? Notes: I am running a repository on the local file system, which may yield different results to one going across a network. I'm definitely using an FSFS repository, so changes to BDB access via file:/// shouldn't apply. I configured settings.xml correctly (i guess so...) true http username password 12.34.56.78 8080 But still I am error message like... if i dont configure userid/password gets correct error message which is HTTP response code 407 - saying authentication required. But If I configure correct/incorrect proxy authentication it always prints below error message....   • Should old/legacy/unused code be deleted from source control repository?

    I've encountered this in multiple projects. As the code base evolves, some libraries, applications, and components get abandoned and/or deprecated. Most people prefer to keep them in. The usual argument is that the code does not really take any space, it can be left alone until needed again. So a repository slowly turns into a cesspool of legacy code, where it's hard to find anything. Some people delete old code, since it creates clutter, raises more questions for new people, and you can restore any old snapshot of the code base anyway. However you can't always find the old code if you don't know where to look, as none of the (common) VCS I know offer search over the entire repository including all historical revisions, and the only way to search the old files is to check out the revision where the deleted file exists. What would be a good approach to repository management?

    Hi all: i'm using SVNant to checkout a repository, the total repository content is so large and i'm only interest in a few file and directories, the repository structure as below: project folder1 folder2 largefolder largefile1 largefile2 folder3 fileilike1.txt fileilike2.txt file.txt file2.txt etc... i'm only interest in the files under project/ folder such as file.txt and file2.txt, and also all files under folder3. i do not want to checkout largefolder/ because it has extra-large files in it. how to write the svnant script? i use ignore but seems not work.

  • How can I relocate to a new repository address with TortoiseSVN?

    I have a working copy checked out from: https://oldserver/svn/myproject/branches/mybranch The server address has changed (actually, the repo was copied over to a new server) so I want to relocate my working copy to the new address: https://newserver/svn/myproject/branches/mybranch Note that only the address changed, not the path. But if I type that URL in TortoiseSVN's "Relocate" dialog box, I get the error "'https://newserver/svn/myproject/branches/mybranch' is not the root of the repository" ... well, of course it isn't, but so what? Then I thought maybe SVN wanted the repository root URL, so I tried giving it https://newserver/svn instead, but that produced the error "Relocate can only change the repository part of an URL". Are there any options besides backing up my changes and checking out a fresh WC from the new server?

  • GitHub Integration in Windows Azure Web Site

    Microsoft had just announced an update for Windows Azure Web Site (a.k.a. WAWS). There are four major features added in WAWS which are free scaling mode, GitHub integration, custom domain and multi branches. Since I ‘m working in Node.js and I would like to have my code in GitHub and deployed automatically to my Windows Azure Web Site once I sync my code, this feature is a big good news to me.   It’s very simple to establish the GitHub integration in WAWS. First we need a clean WAWS. In its dashboard page click “Set up Git publishing”. Currently WAWS doesn’t support to change the publish setting. So if you have an existing WAWS which published by TFS or local Git then you have to create a new WAWS and set the Git publishing. Then in the deployment page we can see now WAWS supports three Git publishing modes: - Push my local files to Windows Azure: In this mode we will create a new Git repository on local machine and commit, publish our code to Windows Azure through Git command or some GUI. - Deploy from my GitHub project: In this mode we will have a Git repository created on GitHub. Once we publish our code to GitHub Windows Azure will download the code and trigger a new deployment. - Deploy from my CodePlex project: Similar as the previous one but our code would be in CodePlex repository.   Now let’s back to GitHub and create a new publish repository. Currently WAWS GitHub integration only support for public repositories. The private repositories support will be available in several weeks. We can manage our repositories in GitHub website. But as a windows geek I prefer the GUI tool. So I opened the GitHub for Windows, login with my GitHub account and select the “github” category, click the “add” button to create a new repository on GitHub. You can download the GitHub for Windows here. I specified the repository name, description, local repository, do not check the “Keep this code private”. After few seconds it will create a new repository on GitHub and associate it to my local machine in that folder. We can find this new repository in GitHub website. And in GitHub for Windows we can also find the local repository by selecting the “local” category.   Next, we need to associate this repository with our WAWS. Back to windows developer portal, open the “Deploy from my GitHub project” in the deployment page and click the “Authorize Windows Azure” link. It will bring up a new windows on GitHub which let me allow the Windows Azure application can access your repositories. After we clicked “Allow”, windows azure will retrieve all my GitHub public repositories and let me select which one I want to integrate to this WAWS. I selected the one I had just created in GitHub for Windows. So that’s all. We had completed the GitHub integration configuration. Now let’s have a try. In GitHub for Windows, right click on this local repository and click “open in explorer”. Then I added a simple HTML file. 1: <html> 2: <head> 3: </head> 4: <body> 5: <h1> 6: I came from GitHub, WOW! 7: </h1> 8: </body> 9: </html> Save it and back to GitHub for Windows, commit this change and publish. This will upload our changes to GitHub, and Windows Azure will detect this update and trigger a new deployment. If we went back to azure developer portal we can find the new deployment. And our commit message will be shown as the deployment description as well.     Recently had a doubt about how and where to test repository methods. Let the following situation: I have an interface IRepository like this: public interface IRepository<T> where T: class, IEntity { IQueryable<T> Query(Expression<Func<T, bool>> expression); // ... Omitted } And a generic implementation of IRepository public class Repository<T> : IRepository<T> where T : class, IEntity { public IQueryable<T> Query(Expression<Func<T, bool>> expression) { return All().Where(expression).AsQueryable(); } } This is an implementation base that can be used by any repository. It contains the basic implementation of my ORM. Some repositories have specific filters, in which case we will IEmployeeRepository with a specific filter: public interface IEmployeeRepository : IRepository<Employee> { IQueryable<Employee> GetInactiveEmployees(); } And the implementation of IEmployeeRepository: public class EmployeeRepository : Repository<Employee>, IEmployeeRepository // TODO: I have a dependency with ORM at this point in Repository<Employee>. How to solve? How to test the GetInactiveEmployees method { public IQueryable<Employee> GetInactiveEmployees() { return Query(p => p.Status != StatusEmployeeEnum.Active || p.StartDate < DateTime.Now); } } Questions Is right to inherit Repository<Employee>? The goal is to reuse code once all implementing IRepository already been made. If EmployeeRepository inherit only IEmployeeRepository, I have to literally copy and paste the code of Repository<T>. In our example, in EmployeeRepository : Repository<Employee> our Repository lies in our ORM layer. We have a dependency here with our ORM impossible to perform some unit test. How to create a unit test to ensure that the filter GetInactiveEmployees return all Employees in which the Status != Active and StartDate < DateTime.Now. I can not create a Fake/Mock of IEmployeeRepository because I would be testing? Need to test the actual implementation of GetInactiveEmployees. The complete code can be found on Github

  • ssh-agent is broken after running Meerkat - can connect to git in terminal but not in Tower - no keychain access

    My mac running Snow leopard 10.6.8 is having trouble handling it's ssh keys. I could previously access all my git repo's via Tower without an issue. The other day I ran Meerkat to see what it was about and it looks like it has broken the way ssh works. Terminal doesn't seem to have a problem and can still connect to Git, but it can't access the keychain. Tower doesn't seem to be able to access anything. The Tower support crew have been super helpful, but I wanted to float this here and see if anyone has any ideas on how to fix my problem. The only hints I have are: $ which ssh returns: /usr/bin/ssh and echo $SSH_AUTH_SOCK returns: /tmp/ssh-nBhRYVEg8t/agent.199 (This one seems to be wrong as I think it's supposed to point to a Listener, but no idea how to fix it) additional: Keychain first-aid finds no problems. The problem seems to be that ssh-agent is not being run properly... but that's just a guess.

    I use msysgit on Windows to use git, but I often want to navigate through a Windows-style *.lnk shortcut. I typically manage my file structure through Windows' explorer, so using a different type of shortcut (such as creating hard or soft link in git) isn't feasible. How would I navigate through this type of shortcut? For example: PCUser@PCName ~ $ cd Desktop PCUser@PCName ~/Desktop $ ls Scripts.lnk PCUser@PCName ~/Desktop $ cd Scripts.lnk sh.exe": cd: Scripts.lnk: Not a directory Is it possible to change this behavior, so that instead of getting an error, it just goes to the location of the directory? Alternatively, is there a command to get the path in a *.lnk file?

  • How can I get nexus to proxy springsource maven repository on s3?

    I have nexus 1.5.0 setup to proxy springsource repositories but it's not working. The repositories are on s3 that nexus doesn't seem to understand how to deal with that. What's the right pattern? Here are the repositories I'm told I need, but I cannot access the maven paths with in them http://repository.springsource.com/maven/bundles/release http://repository.springsource.com/maven/bundles/external Do, I need to mirror these locally?

  • How to move a Mercurial repository created on a local PC to a web server?

    I have created and committed to Mercurial repository that was created on my local drive. I now have a remote Windows 2003 web server setup to serve repositories via hgwebdir.cgi. How do I move the locally created repository to the web server? It looks like an ftp of the .hg folder on the local drive to the remote web server does the trick. Am I doing it the right way. Is there a more efficient way?

  • Can reprepro accept a new version of a package into the repository?

    I have installed a package into my own debian package repository like so: $ sudo reprepro -b /var/packages/ubuntu includedeb maverick my-package_0.8-0_all.deb my-package_0.8-0_all.deb: component guessed as 'main' Exporting indices... I have installed my package on a few machines using apt-get install. I have now added new features to my software and would like to add a new minor version of my package to the repository so that I may update my machines using apt-get upgrade. I try to do this like so: $ sudo reprepro -b /var/packages/ubuntu includedeb maverick my-package_0.9-0_all.deb my-package_0.9-0_all.deb: component guessed as 'main' Skipping inclusion of 'my-package' '1.0-0' in 'maverick|main|i386', as it has already '1.0-0'. Skipping inclusion of 'my-package' '1.0-0' in 'maverick|main|amd64', as it has already '1.0-0'. It looks like I need to tell reprepro that this is a new version of the same package but I have no idea how to do this. I have read the reprepro man page several times and searched on the net for a couple of hours but I have not found any answers. Am I missing something? Many thanks.

  • zsh auto-complete event designator

    (See my previous question for additional context). I'm migrating to zsh from bash, and using oh-my-zsh. When my zsh history looks something like the following: git status git add -A git commit I want to be able to re-run git add -A. To do that, I could use !?git add, which should: !?str[?] Refer to the most recent command containing str. The trailing ‘?’ is necessary if this reference is to be followed by a modifier or followed by any text that is not to be considered part of str. The link for zsh event designators is here. Unfortunately, I can't do this - as I'm typing !?git add, as I hit the ' ', it auto-completes the command to the most recent command matching git (ie, it auto-completes with git commit). I can't use the event designator properly because of this auto-completion as I hit the space. I assume this is an oh-my-zsh feature. I have no idea where to look, though - greping for 'complet' in the oh-my-zsh source doesn't get me anywhere. My question: how do I turn off this feature? Or, if that's not something that's known, where should I be looking - if I was going to implement this auto-complete when whitespace is entered, where would be a logical place to do so in the oh-my-zsh framework?
