• How to troubleshoot problems sharing internet connection via WiFi on Mac OS X

  I'm at a hotel, plugged into their network via ethernet on my MacBook. I want to share the connection via wifi to two other computers. I went to Prefs Sharing and set up internet sharing. I know it's working because my friend with a Mac access the net fine. My friend with the PC can see the network, but can't connect to it. In the sharing prefs, airport options, I chose these options: Channel: Automatic Enable encryption: yes WEP Key length 40-bit password length: 5 chars (as specified in the instructional text) Update: I tried it with encryption turned off, and it works. Of course, I'd rather not do that... Any ideas?

• AWS EC2 Oracle RDB - Storing and managing my data

  When create an Oracle Database on the Amazon cloud you will need to store you database files somewhere on the EC2 cloud. There are basically three places where database files can be stored: 1. Local drive - This is the local drive that is part of the virtual server EC2 instance. 2. Elastic Block Storage (EBS) - Network attached storage that appears as a local drive. 3. Simple Storage Server (S3) - 'Storage for the Internet'. S3 is not high speed and intended for store static document type files. S3 can also be used for storing static web page files. Local drives are ephemeral so not appropriate to be used as a database storage device. The leaves EBS which is the best place to store database files. EBS volumes appear as local disk drives. They are actually network-attached to an Amazon EC2 instance. In addition, EBS persists independently from the running life of a single Amazon EC2 instance. If you use an EBS backed instance for your database data, it will remain available after reboot but not after terminate. In many cases you would not need to terminate your instance but only stop it, which is equivalent of shutdown. In order to save your database data before you terminate an instance, you can snapshot the EBS to S3. Using EBS as a data store you can move your Oracle data files from one instance to another. This allows you to move your database from one region or or zone to another. Unfortunately, to scale out your Oracle RDS on AWS you can not have read only replicas. This is only possible with the other Oracle relational database - MySQL. The free micro instances use EBS as its storage. This is a very good white paper that has more details: AWS Storage Options This white paper also discusses: SQS, SimpleDB, and Amazon RDS in the context of storage devices. • Filter data in sheets from a master sheet

  I have a 'master sheet' with lots of furniture data in it, in column A there are the suppliers names. What I would like is to be able to have my master sheet with all the info and then sub sheets named by supplier; in these sub sheets I would like to reference the master sheet and pull out all of the items that are from that supplier. For example: I would have a sheet called 'Ikea' which would look in the master sheet and search the A column for all entries of 'Ikea'. If present, copy or reference that row 1:12 in the 'ikea' sheet. I would like to do it all dynamically using references rather than copying the data. Also, I would like it to auto update rather than having to run a macro to recalculate it each time. Can this be done with formulars rather than macros?

• How do I swap audio output of the left and right speakers?

  I have two speakers stereo speakers but when I use the sound control panel applet to test my audio configuration I get sound in the right speaker when the user interface indicates the right speaker and vice versa. Is there a way to swap the audio output from left to right and right to left? UPDATE: The reason for this question is that I've recently rearranged my workspace and because of physical constraints the left speaker has to go on the right side and vice versa. I could of course solve this problem with a hardware solution but I'd rather use a software solution if one is available.

• Mouse(s) double clicks instead of single click (its not the mouse)

  I am aware of this very similar question: But I have tried with 3 different mouses and everyone of them exibit the same behavior. Simple enough, 1 out of 3 times I get a double click when single clicking). I searched the net a lot about this problem and have yet to find a solution. I have tried: 1- switch to another mouse 2- uninstall the mouse drivers + reboot 3- I do not have any special mouse drivers/software like intellisense and logitecs to uninstall. 4- verified that I was not in fact on some setting that says open files with single click. 5- everything is up to date including a antivirus 6- Installed fresh drivers from dell's website It is a dell vostro 260 computer running windows 7 pro 64. edit: added a 6th thing I tried. edit2: tried reinstalling every windows update I could find nothing Boss just said he'd buy me a logitech mouse hoping the drivers will fix my problems. • Windows 8 store freezes when searching for updates

  I'm running Windows 8 Pro (x64) on my home desktop. Everything is working well (very very differently, but well) except for the Store application. Several days ago, I got an update notification that listed 8 application updates. I hit the link to install the updates, but only six of them installed. Now I have Updates(2) showing in the store's notification area, and whenever I try to look for the updates the Store goes into "searching" mode (the circles/dots animation) and never finishes the search. Is there any way that I can reset the Store app? I have tried re-downloading it with no success.

• Career advice: stay with PHP or start a new career in something else ( .Net?)

  I'm planning on moving to NY in 6-12 months tops, so I'm forced to find a new job. When I'm planing to start my life in another city it's also probably a good time to think about career changes. I've found a lot of different opinions about PHP vs .Net vs Java and this is not topic here. I don't want to start a new fight about which language is better. Knowing programming language is not the most important thing for being a software developer. To be a really good developer you need to know OOP, design patterns, testing... and language is just a tool to make things happen. So back to my question. I have mixed experience in IT - 1 year as an IT support guy (Windows administration and support), around 2 years of experience in embedded programming (VB.Net 2005) and for the last 2 years I'm working with PHP/MySQL. I have worked with Magento web shop, assisted in some projects in Symfony, modified few Drupal sites. My main concerns are following: Do I continue to improve my skills in PHP e.g. to start learning some major PHP framework like Zend, Symfony maybe get some PHP certification. Or do I start learning .NET or Java. I'm more familiar to .NET so I'll probably choose it if choice falls between .NET and Java ( or you could convince me to choose Java :). Career-wise, I don't know what is the best choice. Learning new framework and language is more time consuming then improving my existing skills in PHP. But with .NET you have a lot of possibilities (Windows 7 Phone development, Silverlight, WPF) and possibly bigger chances to find better jobs. PHP jobs are less payed then .NET, at least, according to my researches (correct me if I'm wrong). But if I start now with .NET I'm just a beginner and my salary will be low. I need at least 2+ years of experience in some language to even try to find some job that is paying higher than $50-60k in NY. My main goal in next 2-3 years is to try to find a job in a $60-80k category. Don't get me wrong, I'm not just chasing money, but money is an important factor when you're trying to start a family. I'm 27 years old and I feel that there isn't a lot of room for wrong decisions regarding my career, so any advice will be very welcome. Update Thank you all for spending time to help me with my problem. All of the answers and comments have been very helpful. I have decided to stick with PHP but also to learn C# and Silverlight 4. We'll see where the life will take me.

• how limit the number of open TCP streams from same IP to a local port?

  Hi, i would like to limit the number of concurrent open TCP streams from the the same IP to the server's (local) port. Let's say 4 concurrent conncetions. How can this be done with ip tables? the closest thing, that i've found was: In Apache, is there a way to limit the number of new connections per second/hour/day? iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -i eth0 -m state --state NEW -m recent --set iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -i eth0 -m state --state NEW -m recent --update --seconds 86400 --hitcount 100 -j REJECT But this limitation just messures the number of new connections over the time. This might be good for controlling HTTP traffic. But this is not a good solution for me, since my TCP streams usually have a lifetime between 5 minutes and 2 hours. thanks a lot in advance for any reply :)

  I want to run: knife role create blah I use chef-solo and don't need knife to connect to a server. I just would like to run these commands for helping me prepopulate the files quickly. Everytime I run of these commands it attempts to connect to a server. This does not happen for knife cookbook create blah Double-ewe tee eff. Update: I've noticed this is the case for databags and environments as well. I've read elsewhere that knife is primarily intended for use with the chef-server API, but it seems ridiculous that something like this can't be done. It just needs to save the darn file.

• Naming conventions: camelCase versus underscore_case ? what are your thoughts about it?

  I've been using underscore_case for about 2 years and I recently switched to camelCase because of the new job (been using the later one for about 2 months and I still think underscore_case is better suited for large projects where there are alot of programmers involved, mainly because the code is easyer to read). Now everybody at work uses camelCase because (so they say) the code looks more elegant . What are you're thoughts about camelCase or underscore_case p.s. please excuse my bad english Edit Some update first: platform used is PHP (but I'm not expecting strict PHP platform related answers , anybody can share their thoughts on which would be the best to use , that's why I came here in the first place) I use camelCase just as everibody else in the team (just as most of you recomend) we use Zend Framework which also recommends camelCase Some examples (related to PHP) : Codeigniter framework recommends underscore_case , and honestly the code is easier to read . ZF recomends camelCase and I'm not the only one who thinks ZF code is a tad harder to follow through. So my question would be rephrased: Let's take a case where you have the platform Foo which doesn't recommend any naming conventions and it's the team leader's choice to pick one. • md5sum of large files gives different results sometimes

  I have an AMD quad core, 8 gb RAM, 1 SSD EXT2 (2 months old), 2 HDD EXT4, approximately 1 year old. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 x86-64 and when I compute the md5sum of large files (9 GB) sometimes I get different values than the one stored on a reference file. Upon restarting and switching off the PC then I get the expected results no matter how many times I repeat it. But this is random. I've turn on ECC (the fastest possible settings) and the issue seems to be rarer, but I've run memtest86+ for 6+ hours without a glitch (and with ECC off!). Any idea? Should I update the BIOS of my motherboard (Asus EVO-something...don't remember it now)? I've tried all the rest apart this, but genuinely don't know what to do anymore... Any suggestion is appreciated!

  I plugged in a 250GB USB hard drive into my MacBook Pro and want to format it in FAT so I can transfer files back and forth between a windows machine. (My windows7 machine only formats in exFAT which my Snow Leopard 2.6.4 doesn't support until I do the update). So I want to format it on the mac. but when I right click on the drive, it gives me the options to eject, copy, but not to format. I can go into Disk Utilities, click on Partition, but the only option is the "Mac Journaled format". How can I Format my USB drive as FAT from my MacBook Pro?

• Grub: Legacy 'ask' parameter no longer supported

  I'm trying to change the resolution on my base shell (the Ctrl+Alt+1) shell in Debian so that it supports my ViewSonic monitor. The shell appears really fuzzy when it is displayed on my lcd monitor, but GRUB looks fine when it's displayed. In I tried changing part of the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT to 'vga=ask', and now I get the error on booting up 'Legacy 'ask' parameter no longer supported' Has this 'vga=ask' value been changed to something else? Note, I tried setting it to 'vga=782' after finding a list of screen modes here and the shell font got real huge for a few seconds during boot up, and then switched back to it's awful fuzzy self again, when I went to use the Debian Bash shell. UPDATE Tried suggestion in this question, it works without fuzziness until the last resolution change which displays the user login to the shell.

• wrong kernel running after install

  I have installed Ubuntu 14.04 from unetbootin. When it reboots after the install, uname -r says: 3.5.0-17-generic ..this means that no modules have loaded for the kernel that is actually installed (3.13.0-32-generic). Does anyone know why this kernel should be installed via the install process? Is it an artifact of using Unetbootin? Booting into the Unetbootin image gives the correct kernel, and thus the modules load. Knowing why is one thing, but I'm not sure how to remedy it now. Because no modules are loaded, I can't connect to the network or connect a USB drive. I've tried update-grub, which seems to find the correct kernel, but doesn't seem to tell the system to boot from it. I've also tried selecting the kernel at boot time using the "Advanced Options for Ubuntu", and the 3.13.x kernel is the only one listed. Selecting this lead to the 3.5.x kernel stubbornly loading.. I'm a fairly accomplished sysadmin, but this one has me flummoxed :) Can anyone help?

  Answering a recent question, and before that, trying to see if a patch which is fundamental for my machine had been included in a kernel release, I have found the following problem: How can I match the kernel version I have for my kernel, which is [:~] % uname -a Linux samsung-romano 3.13.0-29-generic #53-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jun 4 21:00:20 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux with the exact kernel source, which I suppose should be stored in http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=ubuntu/linux.git;a=summary? In that page there are quite a lot of tags, for example: But none of them correspond to 3.13.0-29 which is my running kernel right now. The mapping should be in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Dev/ExtendedStable, where it is said that the 3.13 Ubuntu kernel is based on 3.13.11 --- I think. But from there to finding the tree I have installed is not straightforward. Notice: I know I can install the kernel source corresponding with my installed kernel. But I do not want to install them; I would like ti have a pointer to the git tree to be able to browse it online (and check for commits, patches, etc.). The best options seems to go to linux3.13-y.review or linux3.13-y.queue, but I am unable to find where this tree are marked for the release - if I understand well the policy, in -review the patches are accumulated for testing, and in -queue accumulated for the next minor release/update --- but I am unable to find the exact release tree. I mean, a tag equivalent to 3.13.0-29 was cut here.

• How to share my localhost over the internet?

  I really want to share my localhost over the internet to show my friends the progress of the website we're working on, so that I don't need to upload it to the public server each time I make a change. showoff.io is not free and localtunnel gives me "failed to authenticate" when trying to upload my public key (a lot of people seem to have this problem and there doesn't seem to be a solution for this). Does anyone know any other free service I can use or any other solution at all? I'm using a Mac. Thanks. UPDATE: with localhost I mean a web server running on my computer, I have a dynamic IP address and no I'm not behind a router (just using a wireless modem).

• Interface to collect successful remote backups status

  I would like to deploy into our infrastructure a web interface that could register when the copies are finished and if for some reason they haven't. The current issue is that we are doing on site backups for customers, for each backup a mail is sent ad the end of the backup, the problems is that sometimes the mail isn't sent for a variety of reasons: System doesn't have internet Backup system crashed before sending the mail etc.. What I'd like to do is to have a web interface that the backup software cant visit after doing the backup (either if it's a success or a fail), that acknowledges that the backup has finished, after some time, I'd like to receive a report of the machines that hadn't done the backup. Is there anything remotely similar to this that I could use/adapt to our environment? UPDATE: Just found out this (paessler.com) that seems to be a privative solution of what I intended.

  Oracle Installed Base is an item instance life cycle tracking application that facilitates enterprise-wide life cycle item management and tracking capability.In a typical process flow a sales order is created and shipped, this updates Inventory and creates a new item instance in Install Base (IB).  The Inventory update results in a record being placed in the SFM Event Queue.  If the record is successfully processed the IB tables are updated, if there is an error the record is placed in the csi_txn_errors table and the error needs to be resolved so that the IB instance can be created.It's extremely important to be proactive and monitor IB Transaction Errors regularly.  Errors cascade and can build up exponentially if not resolved.
