  • Waiting on threads

    - by Paul Reiners
    I have a method that contains the following (Java) code: doSomeThings(); doSomeOtherThings(); doSomeThings() creates some threads, each of which will run for only a finite amount of time. The problem is that I don't want doSomeOtherThings() to be called until all the threads launched by doSomeThings() are finished. (Also doSomeThings() will call methods that may launch new threads and so on. I don't want to execute doSomeOtherThings() until all these threads have finished.) This is because doSomeThings(), among other things will set myObject to null, while doSomeOtherThings() calls myObject.myMethod() and I do not want myObject to be null at that time. Is there some standard way of doing this kind of thing (in Java)?

  • What Design Pattern To Replace 'CurrentStep' Variable

    - by Rob P.
    Tried to search but didn't know how to phrase it. I've got some code that is essentially... Private CurMajorStep as Integer = 0 Private CurMinorStep as Integer = 0 Public Sub PerformNextStep() Select Case iMajorStep Case 0 ThingOne() Case 1 ThingTwo() Case 2 ThingThree() Case 3 ThingFour() Case 4 AnythingElse() Case 5 Finish() End Select End Sub And then, in some of those, the CurMinorStep keeps track of the current state of that particular 'step'. I hope that all makes sense. The code is messy and I know it's going to be problematic to maintain. Can someone point me to a clean OO pattern to handle this?

  • How to log SQL output to text file on client from C#

    - by Rob Packwood
    I have a large auditing stored procedure that prints values and runs some SELECT statements. When running within SQL Management Studio we have the use select to display "Results to Text" so all of the SQL results and print statement display in one place. Now I need to have some C# code also call this auditing procedure at the end of the process and basically store all data that would be in the "Results to Text" window into a .txt file. How can this be done?

  • Setting default values for object properties in AS3

    - by Paul T
    I'm an actionscript newbie so please bear with me. Below is a function, and I am curious how to set default property values for objects that are being created in a loop. In the example below, these propeties are the same for each object created in the loop: titleTextField.selectable, titleTextField.wordWrap, titleTextField.x If you pull these properties out of the loop, they are null because the TextField objects have not been created, but it seems silly to have to set them each time. What is the correct way to do this. Thanks! var titleTextFormat:TextFormat = new TextFormat(); titleTextFormat.size = 10; titleTextFormat.font = "Arial"; titleTextFormat.color = 0xfff200; for (var i=0; i<arrThumbPicList.length; i++) { var yPos = 55 * i var titleTextField:TextField = new TextField(); titleTextField.selectable = false; titleTextField.wordWrap = true; titleTextField.text = arrThumbTitles[i]; titleTextField.x = 106; titleTextField.y = 331 + yPos; container.addChild(titleTextField); titleTextField.setTextFormat(titleTextFormat); }

  • excluding previously randomized integer, and randomize again without it

    - by Rob
    <?php if (isset($_POST['Roll!'])) { $sides = $_POST['sides']; $rolled = rand(1,$sides); echo "$rolled was rolled by the dice, it is now out!"; } ?> This is the code I currently have. After rolling that number, however, I want it to roll again, but without the previously rolled number, until it has rolled all number except one, which would be the winning number. I have no idea how to go about doing that. Any ideas? EDIT: I'm sorry, I should have been more clear, thank you all for the help so far, but I also need to echo each number rolled, such as echo "$rolledArray[0] was rolled, it lost.\n"; echo "$rolledArray[1] was rolled, it lost.\n"; echo "$rolledArray[2] was rolled, it lost.\n"; echo "$rolledArray[3] was rolled, it lost.\n"; echo "$rolledArray[x] was rolled, it lost.\n"; echo "$rolledArray[x] was rolled, it lost.\n"; echo "$rolledArray[50?] was rolled, it lost."; EDIT AGAIN: Also I only want them to have to click Roll! once, not multiple times until they've rolled all the numbers, meaning no need for session, I think, though I could be wrong, most of you are clearly more experienced than me. Sorry, I should have mentioned that before as well.

  • PHP: Convert web-page to utf8

    - by Paul Tarjan
    I would like to only work with UTF8. The problem is I don't know the charset of every webpage. How can I detect it and convert to UTF8? <?php $url = "http://vkontakte.ru"; $ch = curl_init($url); $options = array( CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER => true, ); curl_setopt_array($ch, $options); $data = curl_exec($ch); // $data = magic($data); print $data; See this at: http://paulisageek.com/tmp/curl-utf8 What is magic()?

  • Creating an array from a MySQL table

    - by Rob
    I'm trying to create an array to use for a curl_multi_exec, but I can't seem to create the array properly. Here is my code: $SQL = mysql_query("SELECT url FROM urls") or die(mysql_error()); //Query the shell table while($resultSet = mysql_fetch_array($SQL)){ $urls[]=$resultSet; } echo $urls; //Test that the array works But when I run this script, all it does is echo "Array" I have no idea what I'm doing wrong, I've checked around google a bit, but can't figure it out. Any insight would be appreciated.

  • ASP.NET permissions issues

    - by Paul
    Im using Windows Server 2008, IIS7, .NET 4 and when I use the FileUpload control to save a file to a directory I get : Access to the path 'C:\xxx\Websites\CMS\Admin\test' is denied. I have given the test folder full control permissions for NETWORK SERVICE but it makes no difference. I have given full control to the Everyone user but makes no difference. It might have something to do with the fact that up in the CMS folder there is a MVC web application and in the CMS\Admin folder there is a web forms web application. It is the web forms web application that is trying to upload the file and getting the permissions error. Can anyone offer a suggestion.

  • Change URL of a saved HTML file

    - by Paul Camilleri
    I am new to HTML so this question might sound a bit lame. Anyways I have a saved webpage on my desktop that when i open it in google chrome i want it to show a specific URL instead of its current location. Any ideas how i might get this to work? I tried using the history.pushState but i have no idea why it is not working. I created a simple page for now to test it: <html> <head> <script> function setURL() { history.pushState("Test","page2", "www.test.com"); } </script> </head> <body> <button type="button" onclick="setURL()">Set Url</button> </body> </html> Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

  • Selecting count(*) while checking for a value in the results

    - by Rob
    SELECT COUNT(*) as Count, IF(sch.HomeTeamID = 34,true,false) AS Hawaii FROM schedule sch JOIN schools s ON s.ID = 83 WHERE (sch.HomeTeamID = 83 OR sch.AwayTeamID = 83) AND sch.SeasonID = 4 I'm trying to use count() to simplify my result but also include a field that represents wether any of the results' specific column contained a certain value. Is this possible? I'd basically like a row response with all the info I need.

  • lambda vs. operator.attrgetter('xxx') as sort key function in Python

    - by Paul McGuire
    I am looking at some code that has a lot of sort calls using comparison functions, and it seems like it should be using key functions. If you were to change seq.sort(lambda x,y: cmp(x.xxx, y.xxx)), which is preferable: seq.sort(key=operator.attrgetter('xxx')) or: seq.sort(key=lambda a:a.xxx) I would also be interested in comments on the merits of making changes to existing code that works.

  • Is there a (Linux) C++ IDE that can 'construct' a project from a makefile?

    - by Paul
    I am working on a legacy C app which uses makefiles. I am more comfortable (and more productive) working from within an IDE, so I am looking for an IDE that can import the makefile and create a project. Incidentally, these are hand written makefiles (not complicated ones like those generated by Autoconf). I am using Code::Blocks at the moment, but it seems it is unable to import makefiles ...

  • Calculate average in LINQ C# with string representation of property name

    - by Paul
    I need to calculate a whole bunch of averages on an List of Surveys. The surveys have lots of properties that are int and double valued. I am creating a business object to handle all the calculations (there are like 100) and I'd rather not code 100 different methods for finding the average for a particular property. I'd like to be able to have the UI pass a string (representing the property) and have the the business object return an average for that property. So, like... int AverageHeightInInches = MyObject.GetIntAverage("HeightInInches"); . . . Then have linq code to calculate the result. Thanks!

  • What is the point of Convert.ToDateTime(bool)?

    - by Paul Alan Taylor
    I was doing some type conversion routines last night for a system I am working on. One of the conversions involves turning string values into their DateTime equivalents. While doing this, I noticed that the Convert.ToDateTime() method had an overload which accepted a boolean parameter. First question? Under what circumstances could this ever be useful? I went a little further and tried to execute the method in QuickWatch. Either way ( true or false ), the routine returns an InvalidCastException. Second question? Why is this method even here?

  • How do I mysql select with aliases from another table?

    - by Rob
    I'm working with a CMS system where I cannot control database column names. And I've got two related tables: Table: content +------------+----------+----------+----------+----------+ | content_id | column_1 | column_2 | column_3 | column_4 | +------------+----------+----------+----------+----------+ | 1 | stuff | junk | text | info | | 2 | trash | blah | what | bio | +------------+----------+----------+----------+----------+ Table: column_names +------------+-------------+ | column_id | column_name | +------------+-------------+ | 1 | good_text | | 2 | bad_text | | 3 | blue_text | | 4 | red_text | +------------+-------------+ What I'd like to do here is select from the first table, but select the columns AS the column_name from the second table. So my result would look like: +------------+-----------+----------+-----------+----------+ | content_id | good_text | bad_text | blue_text | red_text | +------------+-----------+----------+-----------+----------+ | 1 | stuff | junk | text | info | | 2 | trash | blah | what | bio | +------------+-----------+----------+-----------+----------+

  • Converting a macro to an inline function

    - by Rob
    I am using some Qt code that adds a VERIFY macro that looks something like this: #define VERIFY(cond) \ { \ bool ok = cond; \ Q_ASSERT(ok); \ } The code can then use it whilst being certain the condition is actually evaluated, e.g.: Q_ASSERT(callSomeFunction()); // callSomeFunction not evaluated in release builds! VERIFY(callSomeFunction()); // callSomeFunction is always evaluated Disliking macros, I would instead like to turn this into an inline function: inline VERIFY(bool condition) { Q_ASSERT(condition); } However, in release builds I am worried that the compiler would optimise out all calls to this function (as Q_ASSERT wouldn't actually do anything.) I am I worrying unnecessarily or is this likely depending on the optimisation flags/compiler/etc.? I guess I could change it to: inline VERIFY(bool condition) { condition; Q_ASSERT(condition); } But, again, the compiler may be clever enough to ignore the call. Is this inline alternative safe for both debug and release builds?

  • has_many through and saving to join table

    - by Paul
    I have the following: class Invite < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :user has_many :invite_recipients has_many :recipients, :through => :invite_recipients end class InviteRecipient < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :invite belongs_to :user_comm validates_associated :user_comm, :invite validates_uniqueness_of :user_comm_id, :scope => :invite_id end class UserComm < ActiveRecord::Base end I'd like to create a method for Invite with invite_text and a list of UserComms as the variables and then have it create a new invite with the following validations: 1. All UserComms are unique 2. The invite isn't saved unless all the associated InviteRecipients are saved as well (in other words, the invite isn't valid unless all the created InviteRecipients are valid) I'm not familiar with how to create model functions. Moreover, when I try something like this: i = Invite.new(:invite_text => 'come join') ir1 = InviteRecipient.new(:invite => i, :user_comm => user_comm1) ir2 = InviteRecipient.new(:invite => i, :user_comm => user_comm2) i.invite_recipients = [uc1, uc2] i.save! I get: SystemStackError: stack level too deep

  • How To Prevent Processes From Starting?

    - by Rob P.
    I'm toying around with a very simplistic sort of process-monitor. Currently, it gets a list of the running processes and attempts to kill any process that is not white-listed. What I'm looking for is a way to prevent a process from starting that isn't on the white-list. If that's possible. My knowledge level in this area is pretty non-existent and my Google-fu only returns websites discussing Process.Start() :( Can anyone point me in the right direction?

  • Removing rows from MySQL table where the timestamp is over one day old?

    - by Rob
    I found the exact same question here. But it isn't working for me. I've modified it a bit, manipulated it, and I can't figure it out. I'm trying to remove rows that are over a day old. Here is my code: if (isset($_POST['prune'])) { $sql = "DELETE FROM logs WHERE time < date('now', '-1 days')"; mysql_query($sql); echo 'Logs older than one day removed.'; } Fairly simple question I suppose, but its bugging the hell out of me. I would appreciate any help. In case it makes a difference, the column is a TIMESTAMP type.

  • 64 bit enum in C++?

    - by Rob
    Is there a way to have a 64 bit enum in C++? Whilst refactoring some code I came across bunch of #defines which would be better as an enum, but being greater than 32 bit causes the compiler to error. For some reason I thought the following might work: enum MY_ENUM : unsigned __int64 { LARGE_VALUE = 0x1000000000000000, };
