  A lot of torrent search engines have the ability to provide an RSS feed of matches, allowing you to set up torrent programs to download items which are published on the feed. This is useful for watching releases of things. The problem with doing this through a random search engine for Ubuntu is that you usually get too many torrents as it picks up different custom versions, and other software with the name in the title/description.   I have an .htaccess rewrite rule like this: RewriteCond %{SCRIPT_FILENME} !-d RewriteCond %{SCRIPT_FILENAME} !-f RewriteRule ^search/(.*)$ search.php?q=$1 What this does is, if someone visits http://www.mysite.com/search/test the URI that is really processed is http://www.mysite.com/search.php?q=test. Now, if I try to pass an extra random GET parameter to my rewritten URL, the parameter is ignored. So if I try to do visit here: http://www.mysite.com/search/whatever?extra=true The parameter extra is ignored. It doesn't seem to get passed at all. Can this problem be fixed? If so, how?

• What are the factors affecting a new programming language?

  I am developing a new general-purpose programming language of my own design. It's currently my own personal project. I have read of some experts saying that new languages do not usually survive (unfortunately I can't find a reference to that right now). What are the most substantial problems that a new language faces? The language syntax is similar to C/Python families, it does not use S-expressions, and it is an imperative language, but I'm doing first-class functions in it to provide the facilities of currying. In particular, I am concentrating on translating the source language to an intermediate language for execution by an interpreter, but I'm not in a position to translate to native code yet. What would be the issues with that? I've not personally used many non-native code languages, so I'm not well aware of the performance issues on today's machines. I also can't decide upon a lexer and parser generator. What would be the pros and cons of Flex and Yacc vs. hand-made? And what benefits will LLVM provide? I need to get the interpreter ready as quickly as possible. Finally, what factors will affect the language's use post release? I am planning a small library of essentials and full documentation for the first phase.

  In the new Flash Pro CS6 there is an option to generate spriteheet from a symbol. An artist I'm working with created a bunch of assets for a game. One of them is a walking person as seen from a top-down view. When I look for the animation, I do not seem to find it. When I select to create a spritesheet, flash suggest creating a spritesheet with one frame in the base pose and no other (animation) frames. What is causing this and how do I correct it? 2 .I want to convert it to a sprite sheet for 32 angles of movement. Is there any magical easy way to get this done? Is there a workaround without using Flash CS6 to do the same thing?

• XNA and C# vs the 360's in order processor

  Having read this rant, I feel that they're probably right (seeing as the Xenon and the CELL BE are both highly sensitive to branchy and cache ignorant code), but I've heard that people are making games fine with C# too. So, is it true that it's impossible to do anything professional with XNA, or was the poster just missing what makes XNA the killer API for game development? By professional, I don't mean in the sense that you can make money from it, but more in the sense that the more professional games have phsyics models and animation systems that seem outside the reach of a language with such definite barriers to the intrinsics. If I wanted to write a collision system or fluid dynamics engine for my game, I don't feel like C# offers me the chance to do that as the runtime code generator and the lack of intrinsics gets in the way of performance. However, many people seem to be fine working within these constraints, making their successful games but seemingly avoiding any of the problems by omission. I've not noticed any XNA games do anything complex other than what's already provided by the libraries, or handled by shaders. Is this avoidance of the more complex game dynamics because of teh limitations of C#, or just people concentrating on getting it done? In all honesty, I can't believe that AI war can maintain that many units of AI without some data oriented approach, or some dirty C# hacks to make it run better than the standard approach, and I guess that's partly my question too, how have people hacked C# so it's able to do what games coders do naturally with C++?

• Tracking click conversions with Google Analytics

  Is there anyway I can use Google Analytics to track click conversions on a link? For example, if I have a link to www.a.com , is it possible for google to track the number of times that particular link was shown on my page and then track how many times it was really clicked? The problem is that I do not show the link to www.a.com every time the page loads. I am using a random function (server side) to generate a different link everytime. I would like Google Analytics to provide me with the click conversion for each of the links I choose to show the user. Thanks, Joel

• PHP security regarding login

  I have read a lot about PHP login security recently, but many questions on Stack Overflow regarding security are outdated. I understand bcrypt is one of the best ways of hashing passwords today. However, for my site, I believe sha512 will do very well, at least to begin with. (I mean bcrypt is for bigger sites, sites that require high security, right?) I´m also wonder about salting. Is it necessary for every password to have its own unique salt? Should I have one field for the salt and one for the password in my database table? What would be a decent salt today? Should I join the username together with the password and add a random word/letter/special character combination to it? Thanks for your help!

  Kernel Module Update was required when opening VMWare client (vmplayer) then following error occurs. Any idea would be appreciated. Unable to start services. See log file /tmp/vmware-root/setup-NNN.log for details (Note: NNN looks like random numbers) On GUI that show progress of updating, "Virtual Netowork Device" show red flag appears. • Help making TP-Link Wireless USB Adapter TL-WN723N work consistently

  I've only recently made the jump to Ubuntu, using 11.10/64 as my only desktop OS. Everything seems to be working fine, except my USB Wireless adapter, TP-Link's TL-WN723N which is randomly connecting and disconnecting. The connection time appears to be random, too: I've experienced hours of connectivity and lots of connections/disconnections. I've tried searching for a solution, but what I find doesn't concern this specific USB adapter. I'd like some help identifying the problem... I've also recently switched to using a D-Link router as a wireless hub, which creates its own wireless/n network. Unfortunately this didn't solve my problems, as the new n network can be joined, but there's no connectivity to the internet. I know that's not much info to help others solve my problem, so please let me know of what else I can provide to make this a better question -- and possibly help others facing similar trouble. lsusb reports that I'm using Realtek Semiconductor Corp. It was very clear that when they got the machines they selected the machines by previous owner and they were not random machines, but still, I will never scan from my company machine again. • How to configure apache / php / postfix website emails when using vhosts?

  I have a LAMP webserver configured to serve multiple websites. Each virtual host has various PHP applications, mainly Wordpress. When users sign up to the Wordpress sites, email is sent by PHP through to postfix, and then on to the receiver. The problem is that postfix is identifying itself to the remote server with the contents of /etc/hostname, which is not a fully qualified domain name. Some mail servers reject this and the mail bounces. Additionally, the return path is being set to one of the vitual host domains, seemingly at random. I could set /etc/hostname to one of the website domain names, but then the emails from the other websites would have a wrong server in the headers, and this would not fix the return-path issue. Possibly related, apache2 says "could not determine the server's fully qualified domain name" on startup. How do I fix this so that each website can send email without revealing the other websites hosted on the server?

• Is there a variable width font that does not change width when adding effects like bold, italic?

  NetBeans has a word wrap feature now - but if the font changes width when bold then it gets all jumpy and sometimes hard to work with. Edit: It turns out that even with Courier New that NetBeans word wrap still jumps up and down lines at a time at random. I guess that this question no longer cares for an answer. However,, it seems that there is no answer. (at least nobody has brought one up yet) I am currently using Comic Sans MS which gets wider when bold.

  Yes I proudly -and sadly- declare that I am a complete nincompoop when it comes to Flash, and I have been fishing around the big wide web for information. The reason for this is that I have been contracted to create a game(s) for a website -the usual flash-based games caveat. Please I do not mean things like by those gaming generator websites, I mean small yet professional games- but the caveat, as always, is that impossible dream: it needs to be done all for free. The budget...well imagine it as not there. Annoyingly is that I am a game designer yes, but with a ridiculously tight deadline I haven't got much time to re-learn (ah the heady days of programming at uni) everything by the end of March, so I'd like to ask some people who know their stuff rather than keep looking at a gazillion different things. This is my understanding: with the flash sdk you can create a game, albeit you need to be pretty programming savvy. FlashDevelop helps there -yet I am not entirely sure how. Yet even FD says to use Flash for the animation/graphics. Yes its undeniably powerful but as I said there is the unattainable demand of no money. The million dollar question: what, if any, tools can I use to create a free flash game?

I'm not thinking in a specific language but if needed let's assume it's Java or C (for this case would be needed to use chars instead of strings).

One example being displaying the usernames of people online: Anton Brother68 Commissar Dougheater Elflord Foobar Goop Hoo Iee Joo Rearranging them we could get exactly 22 characters long on each line: Anton Brother68 Foobar Commissar Elflord Goop Dougheater Hoo Iee Joo This is kind of a knapsack, except seems like there ought to be a P solution since I don't care about perfection, and I have multiple lines. Second instance is identical, except instead of names and character count I would be displaying random images and use their width.

  I'm working on a simple multiplayer game that receives a random 4x4 matrix from a server and extracts a shape from it. For example: XXOO OXOO XXOX XXOO XOOX and XOOO XXXX OXXX So in the first matrix the shape I want to parse is: oo o oo and the 2nd: oo oo ooo I know there must be an algorithm for this because I saw this kind of behavior on some puzzle games but I have no idea how to go about to detecting them or even where to start. So my question is: How do I detect what shape is in the matrix and how do I differentiate between multiple colors? (it doesn't come only in X and O, it comes in a maximum of 4). Additionally, the shape must be a minimum of 4 blocks.
