• Linux as a gateway (no NAT)

  I'm trying to configure a linux server as a gateway/router, but I can't get it to work, and all information I've managed to find is NAT-related. I have a public IP block for the gateway and devices behind it, so I want the gateway to simply route packets to the internet - again: no NATing! I've managed to get the gateway to access the internet successfully (that was just a matter of configuring the IP and GW), and the computers behind it can communicate with it. [EDIT: more info] This is actually an IPv6 block (2800:40:403::0/48) (but I've found that most utilities and instructions can be easily adapted from IPv4 to IPv6 with little hastle). The server has too ports: wan: 2800:40:403::1/48 lan: 2800:40:403::3/48 One of the computers behind it is connected to it via a switch; 2800:40:403::7/48 The wan interface on the server can ping6 www.google.com without issues. The lan interface on the server and the client can mutually ping each other without issues (as well as SSH, etc). I've tried setting the server as a default gateway for the client, with no luck: client # route -A inet6 add default gw 2800:40:403::3 dev eth1 server # cat /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/all/forwarding 1 I don't want any filtering/firewalling/etc, just plain routing. • Oracle Linux screen freezes during installation

  I was installing Oracle Linux 6.4 on a server, and the screen suddenly froze. Here were the previous steps: I put in the disk, clicked install, checked the disk (no errors), did pre-install setup (clock, root password, host+domain name, etc.), configured two 40GB hard drives in a RAID1 array (no swap, 3100mb encrypted raid partitions, ~100mb ext4 partition mounting to /boot, encrypted ext4 RAID device with mounting to /), selected packages, hit continue. The system did its short preinstall processes, then when to the main installation screen with the long status bar. The installer proceeded like always, but around package 250 out of ~1000, the screen suddenly went black with a text cursor in the upper left corner of the screen and the mouse cursor in its previous place. Neither cursor moved and the only thing that triggered a response was a ctrl-alt-delete that rebooted it. I have run this in VMs before without this issue. Memtest hasn't reported anything, and the media check went smoothly. The machine has supported Ubuntu server without issues before. Any ideas? I have tried booting after that, but the grub bootloader tries to find fd0 for some reason (I have no idea why it would search for the floppy disk). UPDATE My server successfully installed, but won't boot up. I think that, for some reason, it is still using the old bootloader from the previous installation. Any ideas on how to fix that?

Since my drives are 3TB, fdisk and cfdisk won't cut it due to their 2GB limit, but they are straight forward when managing partitions - adding da or fd as types. But, there is not that straight forward guide for RAID partition setup with parted. So, how do I make Non-FS or RAID partition with parted?

• Using multiple USB webcams in Linux

  Running more than one USB webcam in Debian/Linux results in the the following error: libv4l2: error turning on stream: No space left on device VIDIOC_STREAMON: No space left on device What initially seemed to be a programming issue in OpenCV turned into a quest for a mysterious hardware/software problem after the same errors were produced by running cheese and xawtv. Apparently it's caused by webcams requesting all the available bandwidth on the USB host controller. With that in mind I decided to run wireshark and capinfos to see just how much bandwidth a single camera used. 4 megabits per second at 320x240 14 megabits per second at 640x480 32 megabits per second at 1920x1080 Interesting! That might explain why two cameras at 320x240 work but any higher resolution fails. It's as if my USB controller is only operating at USB 1 speeds, yet lsusb shows both webcams belonging to a device which supposedly supports 480 megabits per second. One solution proposed forcing the webcams to calculate their bandwidth usage instead of requesting their maximum by running the following commands: sudo rmmod uvcvideo sudo modprobe uvcvideo quirks=128 Unfortunately that made no difference, so I decided to try another solution. A post on StackOverflow suggested telling my webcams to use a lower FPS or compressed video format like MJPEG, but after running v4lctl list it doesn't appear either of my webcams support changing their video mode. And that's where I'm stuck. Why would two webcams operating well below the maximum speed of USB 2 would produce this error? ps: It's not a disk space issue, df displays no change when the webcams are started. pps: If it makes a difference, here's the output of lsusb

• LMDE detects a wireless card, but can't use it

  LMDE can see my wireless card, and correctly identifies it, but it refuses to let me turn it on through the shiny graphical interface. Is there a way to use the non-shiny terminal to turn on my wireless? One small tidbit I noticed was the stated version; it says the version is 00. I believe that's hexadecimal for 0, which may indicate something screwy with the software. • Trying to launch old game using wine

  I'm using wine 1.5.11 on Archlinux, and I try to launch this old game : http://www.cnetfrance.fr/telecharger/waterboy-11006056s.htm?download=1 The problem is that I always get a "Run-time error '13' : Type mismatch" when I try to launch it. • Linux that restores itself on each reboot

  I'm looking for methods and software to help create a variant of lubuntu that will restore itself to an install state and/or update on every boot. I'm thinking of doing things like putting the root filesystem on a squashfs and using unionfs and tmpfs to make root writable, but automagically restorable. I'm thinking of updating the squashfs with rsync. Perhaps there are other ways to approach the problem. Perhaps root needn't be writable at all. All thoughts welcome. The home dir would be writable in the usual way. The goal, if it matters, is a Linux that's simple to maintain from the home office, but that functions correctly for customers. We have some custom software that we wish for customers to be able to run trivially on equipment we provide. Ideally these devices would have a "restore to factory" function that would put it back the way we intended. If this is part of the normal boot cycle, so much the better. Why lubuntu? Personal preference for this application. It has a usable desktop, but doesn't take up much ram.

• sudo rejects password that is correct

  sudo (Which I have configured to ask for a password) is rejecting my password (as if I mis-typed it) I am absolutely not typing it incorrectly. I have changed the password temporarily to alphabetic characters only, and it looks fine in plaintext, in the same terminal. I have my username configured thus: myusername ALL=(ALL) ALL I am using my password, NOT the root password, which are distinct. Just to be sure, I've tried both (even though I know the root password is not what I should use) - neither work. I have added myself to the group 'wheel' additionally, and included the following line: %wheel ALL=(ALL) ALL I'm kind of at the end of my rope here. I don't know what would cause it to act as though it was accepting my password, but then reject it. I have no trouble logging in with the same password, either at terminal shells, or through the X11 login manager.

• Fedora 17 transparent Ethernet Bridge not forwarding IP traffic

  I am running on Fedora 17 with the latest ebtables and have been trying to setup a transparent bridge - using the following script, I send a ping through the bridged host and only see the requests on the bridge (among other traffic from eth0), BUT, arps and arp replies are making it through. • TCP handshake ok, then the client isn't receiving any packets from the server

  Topology: Client ----- Intermediate Device ----- Server Client: win7 Intermediate Device: unknown Server: CentOS 5.8 The problem occurs when the client and server are trying to establish a SSL connection. It happens to one specific port, 2000. I haven't been able to replicate the problem with other port numbers. I captured packets on both client and server. After the TCP handshake, from the client's perspective, it's not receiving ACKs for its previously sent packets so it kept re-sending them. On the server side, however, it did receive those packets and sent ACK packets. The weird thing is, after the server sent those ACKs, it received a [RST, ACK] packet, from the intermediate device, for every packet it sent. What could be the cause?

  Hi all hope your having a good day/evening. Simple question, but maybe not so simple to answer. I have an unordered list, which i am using as a menu. The list items are floated right and sized due to an anchor tag inside them with a roll over. The last element is given a specific size to suck up any extra space. My question is: How can i get it to display at the same widths without specifying exact widths for each list item? Any help would be appreciated. • Linux Mint Wireless doesn't connect

  I'm having a great problem, I've installed Linux mint debian edition (LMDE), and following this tutorial http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/161 I did installed the network driver. The available connections appears to me, but when i try to connect to my connection at first time, I got this message: "(4) Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken." And the following tries, I got this another message: "(32) Insufficient privileges." I'm accepting ideas. Thanks. • Ubuntu 12.04 KVM running Ubuntu 12.04 with linux-image-virtual crash on boot

  One of my VMs is stuck on "pause" in virsh. If I destroy and restart it, it will go to pause after a bit of time as "running". I can at best enter my username at login if I'm quick but it'll then shutdown. I don't know where to start with this so any help would be great!! I can access the VMs files via guestfish. the kern.log and syslog don't populate new lines. • Triple monitor setup in linux

  I'm hoping there are some xorg gurus out there. I'm trying to get a three monitor setup working in linux. I have 2 lcd monitors and a tv, all different resolutions. I'm using 2 video cards; a 9800 GTX and 7900Gt. I've seen a lot of different posts about people trying to make this work, and in every case, they either gave up, or Xinerama magically solved all their problems. Basically, my main problem is that I cannot get Xinerama to work. Every time I turn it on in the options, my machine gets stuck in a neverending boot cycle. If I disable Xinerama, I just have three Xorg screens, but I can't drag windows from one to the other. I can get the 2 lcds on Twinview, and the tv on a separate Xorg screen no problem. But I don't really like this solution. I'd rather have them all on separate screens and stitch them together with Xinerama. Has anyone done this? Here's my xorg.conf for reference. p.s. This took me all of 30 seconds to set up in Windows XP! p.s.s. I've seen somewhere that maybe randr can solve my problems? But I'm not quite sure how? • MySQL on Linux out of memory

RAM is 64GB. The memory consumption increases gradually and we run out of memory. Then only rebooting releases all the memory, but then process of memory consumption starts again and reaches 63-64GB in less than a day.
