    I have the following Solution: SomeProject.Ria (non Silverlight code) SomeProject.Ria.Silverlight (Silverlight light code, namespace is still SomeProject.Ria) SomeProject.Ria.MyServices (RIA Services Domain Service) SomeProject.Ria.MyServices.Proxies (RIA Services Silverlight Generated Code) SomeProject.Shell (Silverlight Applicaiton) SomeProject.Web (Web Application) I would like to use Resource Files for my Annotations on the meta data class in SomeProject.Ria.MyServices. The format for that appears to be: [Required(AllowEmptyStrings=false,ErrorMessageResourceName="ThisFieldIsRequired", ErrorMessageResourceType(MyResource))] Which project does MyResource belong in? (Assuming that someday I need to support other culture files). Also the use of the string in here really seems to breed room for error, is it possible to do something like this and still achieve localization, or does this just get compiled into the meta data? If not, how can I get round the resource name being a string? [Required(AllowEmptyStrings=false,ErrorMessage=MyResources.RequiredMessage)]

  • Dependency Injection/IoC container practices when writing frameworks

    I've used various IoC containers (Castle.Windsor, Autofac, MEF, etc) for .Net in a number of projects. I have found they tend to encourage a number of bad practices. Are there any established practices for IoC container use, particularly when providing a platform/framework? My aim as a framework writer is to make code as simple and as easy to use as possible. I'd rather write one line of code to construct an object than ten or even just two. For example, a couple of code smells that I've noticed and don't have good suggestions to: Large number of parameters (5) for constructors. Creating services tends to be complex; all of the dependencies are injected via the constructor - despite the fact that the components are rarely optional (except for maybe in testing). Lack of private and internal classes; this one may be a specific limitation of using C# and Silverlight, but I'm interested in how it is solved. It's difficult to tell what a frameworks interface is if all the classes are public; it allows me access to private parts that I probably shouldnt touch. Coupling the object lifecycle to the IoC container. It is often difficult to manually construct the dependencies required to create objects. Object lifecycle is too often managed by the IoC framework. I've seen projects where most classes are registered as Singletons. You get a lack of explicit control and are also forced to manage the internals (it relates to the above point, all classes are public and you have to inject them). For example, .Net framework has many static methods. such as, DateTime.UtcNow. Many times I have seen this wrapped and injected as a construction parameter. Depending on concrete implementation makes my code hard to test. Injecting a dependency makes my code hard to use - particularly if the class has many parameters. How do I provide both a testable interface, as well as one that is easy to use? What are the best practices?

  • Who should control navigation in an MVVM application?

    Example #1: I have a view displayed in my MVVM application (let's use Silverlight for the purposes of the discussion) and I click on a button that should take me to a new page. Example #2: That same view has another button that, when clicked, should open up a details view in a child window (dialog). We know that there will be Command objects exposed by our ViewModel bound to the buttons with methods that respond to the user's click. But, what then? How do we complete the action? Even if we use a so-called NavigationService, what are we telling it? To be more specific, in a traditional View-first model (like URL-based navigation schemes such as on the web or the SL built-in navigation framework) the Command objects would have to know what View to display next. That seems to cross the line when it comes to the separation of concerns promoted by the pattern. On the other hand, if the button wasn't wired to a Command object and behaved like a hyperlink, the navigation rules could be defined in the markup. But do we want the Views to control application flow and isn't navigation just another type of business logic? (I can say yes in some cases and no in others.) To me, the utopian implementation of the MVVM pattern (and I've heard others profess this) would be to have the ViewModel wired in such a way that the application can run headless (i.e. no Views). This provides the most surface area for code-based testing and makes the Views a true skin on the application. And my ViewModel shouldn't care if it displayed in the main window, a floating panel or a child window, should it? According to this apprach, it is up to some other mechanism at runtime to 'bind' what View should be displayed for each ViewModel. But what if we want to share a View with multiple ViewModels or vice versa? So given the need to manage the View-ViewModel relationship so we know what to display when along with the need to navigate between views, including displaying child windows / dialogs, how do we truly accomplish this in the MVVM pattern?

  • Two servers, two domains, one ip. mod_proxy beginner

    I run two virtual web servers (both running apache2 on debian). I have just one external IP, but two domains, and I want a domain going to each of the servers. I've understood that I need a Reverse Proxy, and I enabled both the mod_proxy and the mod_proxy_http modules on the "primary server". Do I need to enable anything on the "secondary server"? I also understood that I need to write some things in a virtual host file, but what? On the primary server, I have a virtual host file for one of the domains, and some for subdomains. I want domain1.tld to go to the primary server (port 80 is forwarded to it, so that works) and domain2.tld to go to the other server (internal ip 192.168.0.x). No ports needs to be forwarded to it, right? So, what to add and in which virtual host file? Or a new one? Other questions suggest adding ProxyPass and ProxyPassReverse, but I'm lost anyway, and I just don't understand the apache documentation. Thanks in advance

  • Validation in Silverlight

    Getting started with the basics Validation in Silverlight can get very complex pretty easy. The DataGrid control is the only control that does data validation automatically, but often you want to validate your own entry form. Values a user may enter in this form can be restricted by the customer and have to fit an exact fit to a list of requirements or you just want to prevent problems when saving the data to the database. Showing a message to the user when a value is entered is pretty straight forward as I’ll show you in the following example.     This (default) Silverlight textbox is data-bound to a simple data class. It has to be bound in “Two-way” mode to be sure the source value is updated when the target value changes. The INotifyPropertyChanged interface must be implemented by the data class to get the notification system to work. When the property changes a simple check is performed and when it doesn’t match some criteria an ValidationException is thrown. The ValidatesOnExceptions binding attribute is set to True to tell the textbox it should handle the thrown ValidationException. Let’s have a look at some code now. The xaml should contain something like below. The most important part is inside the binding. In this case the Text property is bound to the “Name” property in TwoWay mode. It is also told to validate on exceptions. This property is false by default.   <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal"> <TextBox Width="150" x:Name="Name" Text="{Binding Path=Name, Mode=TwoWay, ValidatesOnExceptions=True}"/> <TextBlock Text="Name"/> </StackPanel>   The data class in this first example is a very simplified person class with only one property: string Name. The INotifyPropertyChanged interface is implemented and the PropertyChanged event is fired when the Name property changes. When the property changes a check is performed to see if the new string is null or empty. If this is the case a ValidationException is thrown explaining that the entered value is invalid.   public class PersonData:INotifyPropertyChanged { private string _name; public string Name { get { return _name; } set { if (_name != value) { if(string.IsNullOrEmpty(value)) throw new ValidationException("Name is required"); _name = value; if (PropertyChanged != null) PropertyChanged(this, new PropertyChangedEventArgs("Name")); } } } public event PropertyChangedEventHandler PropertyChanged=delegate { }; } The last thing that has to be done is letting binding an instance of the PersonData class to the DataContext of the control. This is done in the code behind file. public partial class Demo1 : UserControl { public Demo1() { InitializeComponent(); this.DataContext = new PersonData() {Name = "Johnny Walker"}; } }   Error Summary In many cases you would have more than one entry control. A summary of errors would be nice in such case. With a few changes to the xaml an error summary, like below, can be added.           First, add a namespace to the xaml so the control can be used. Add the following line to the header of the .xaml file. xmlns:Controls="clr-namespace:System.Windows.Controls;assembly=System.Windows.Controls.Data.Input"   Next, add the control to the layout. To get the result as in the image showed earlier, add the control right above the StackPanel from the first example. It’s got a small margin to separate it from the textbox a little.   <Controls:ValidationSummary Margin="8"/>   The ValidationSummary control has to be notified that an ValidationException occurred. This can be done with a small change to the xaml too. Add the NotifyOnValidationError to the binding expression. By default this value is set to false, so nothing would be notified. Set the property to true to get it to work.   <TextBox Width="150" x:Name="Name" Text="{Binding Name, Mode=TwoWay, ValidatesOnExceptions=True, NotifyOnValidationError=True}"/>   Data annotation Validating data in the setter is one option, but not my personal favorite. It’s the easiest way if you have a single required value you want to check, but often you want to validate more. Besides, I don’t consider it best practice to write logic in setters. The way used by frameworks like WCF Ria Services is the use of attributes on the properties. Instead of throwing exceptions you have to call the static method ValidateProperty on the Validator class. This call stays always the same for a particular property, not even when you change the attributes on the property. To mark a property “Required” you can use the RequiredAttribute. This is what the Name property is going to look like:   [Required] public string Name { get { return _name; } set { if (_name != value) { Validator.ValidateProperty(value, new ValidationContext(this, null, null){ MemberName = "Name" }); _name = value; if (PropertyChanged != null) PropertyChanged(this, new PropertyChangedEventArgs("Name")); } } }   The ValidateProperty method takes the new value for the property and an instance of ValidationContext. The properties passed to the constructor of the ValidationContextclass are very straight forward. This part is the same every time. The only thing that changes is the MemberName property of the ValidationContext. Property has to hold the name of the property you want to validate. It’s the same value you provide the PropertyChangedEventArgs with. The System.ComponentModel.DataAnnotation contains eight different validation attributes including a base class to create your own. They are: RequiredAttribute Specifies that a value must be provided. RangeAttribute The provide value must fall in the specified range. RegularExpressionAttribute Validates is the value matches the regular expression. StringLengthAttribute Checks if the number of characters in a string falls between a minimum and maximum amount. CustomValidationAttribute Use a custom method to validate the value. DataTypeAttribute Specify a data type using an enum or a custom data type. EnumDataTypeAttribute Makes sure the value is found in a enum. ValidationAttribute A base class for custom validation attributes All of these will ensure that an validation exception is thrown, except the DataTypeAttribute. This attribute is used to provide some additional information about the property. You can use this information in your own code.   [Required] [Range(0,125,ErrorMessage = "Value is not a valid age")] public int Age {   It’s no problem to stack different validation attributes together. For example, when an Age is required and must fall in the range from 0 to 125:   [Required, StringLength(255,MinimumLength = 3)] public string Name {   Or in one row like this, for a required Name with at least 3 characters and a maximum of 255:   Delayed validation Having properties marked as required can be very useful. The only downside to the technique described earlier is that you have to change the value in order to get it validated. What if you start out with empty an empty entry form? All fields are empty and thus won’t be validated. With this small trick you can validate at the moment the user click the submit button.   <TextBox Width="150" x:Name="NameField" Text="{Binding Name, Mode=TwoWay, ValidatesOnExceptions=True, NotifyOnValidationError=True, UpdateSourceTrigger=Explicit}"/>   By default, when a TwoWay bound control looses focus the value is updated. When you added validation like I’ve shown you earlier, the value is validated. To overcome this, you have to tell the binding update explicitly by setting the UpdateSourceTrigger binding property to Explicit:   private void SubmitButtonClick(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { NameField.GetBindingExpression(TextBox.TextProperty).UpdateSource(); }   This way, the binding is in two direction but the source is only updated, thus validated, when you tell it to. In the code behind you have to call the UpdateSource method on the binding expression, which you can get from the TextBox.   Conclusion Data validation is something you’ll probably want on almost every entry form. I always thought it was hard to do, but it wasn’t. If you can throw an exception you can do validation. If you want to know anything more in depth about something I talked about in this article let me know. I might write an entire post to that.

  • Using the Reactive Extensions with the Silverlight Toolkit and MEF

    I have come across several instances of people having trouble using the new Reactive Extensions (v1.0.2317) in projects that reference the Silverlight Toolkit (Nov09) due to the fact that the original release of the Rx Framework (v1.0.0.0) was bundled with the Toolkit.  The trouble really becomes evident if you are using the Managed Extensibility Framework (MEF) to discover and compose portions of your application.   If you are using the CompositionInitializer, or any other mechanism that probes all of the loaded assemblies for valid exports, you will likely receive the following error: Inspecting the LoaderExceptions property yields the following: System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Reactive, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=1b331ac6720247d9' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.  File name: 'System.Reactive, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=1b331ac6720247d9' This is due to some of the Toolkit assemblies referencing the older System.Reactive.dll.  I was able to work around the issue by bypassing the automatic probing of loaded assemblies and instead specified which assemblies my exports could be found.     public MainPage()     {         InitializeComponent();           // the following line causes a ReflectionTypeLoadException         //CompositionInitializer.SatisfyImports(this);           // skip the toolkit assemblies by specifying assemblies         var catalog = new AssemblyCatalog(GetType().Assembly);         var container = new CompositionContainer(catalog);         container.ComposeParts(this);           ShowReferences();     } With some simple xaml, I was able to print out exactly which libraries are currently loaded in the application.     Hello Guys, I've been playing with slider on silverlight. Now the result is this, a simple resizing image thru slider.  The Image below is the default size of my sample. And the second Image below are the result when the slider slide to right and top.   • Implementing logical paging with RadDataPager for WPF and Silverlight

    Following the great series about RadDataPager started by Rossen and Pavel, today I’m going to show you how to implement logical paging. We are going to implement alphabetical paging similar to this ASP.NET AJAX Grid Demo. As you may already know, the key to the heart of the RadDataPager is the IPagedCollectionView interface. You can create your own implementations of this interface and implement any custom logic for paging you want. This is exactly what we are going to do in this article. Introducing PagedCollectionViewBase and LogicallyPagedCollectionView<T> If you have looked at IPagedCollectionView interface you may have found out that it is not a trivial interface to implement. It has 5 methods, 6 properties and 2 events – total number of members to implement 13.   • Add control to grid from code behind in Silverlight

    In this post I show how you can easily add a control to a silverlight grid layout from code behind. First you draw the grid in the xaml. <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot" Background="Red"> <Grid.RowDefinitions> <RowDefinition Height="20"> </RowDefinition> </Grid.RowDefinitions> <Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <ColumnDefinition Width="300"> </ColumnDefinition> </Grid.ColumnDefinitions> </Grid> Now in the page constructor add the following code. public MainPage() { InitializeComponent(); var myButton = new Button { Name = "btnOk", Content = "Ok", }; myButton.SetValue(Grid.RowProperty, 1); myButton.SetValue(Grid.ColumnProperty, 1); myButton.Click += myButton_Click; LayoutRoot.Children.Add(myButton); } Also add the evento of the button. void myButton_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { } The code needs no comment because it’s very simple.
