How do I speed up the latest version of Ubuntu on a VIA C7-M 1.6 GHz based netbook (HP 2133)? For example, full screen videos are very slow in the default configuration.
Mac and Windows Vista have such pretty user interfaces with all the transparencies and stuff. Is there anything for Ubuntu Linux to improve the way it looks?
Hi,
I have install svn on ubuntu 9.10. But when I try to use svn to checkout code for an open source project, i get this error:
$ svn co svn://svn.valgrind.org/valgrind/trunk valgrind
svn: Berkeley DB error for filesystem '/home/svn/repos/valgrind/db' while opening 'nodes' table:
Cannot allocate memory
svn: bdb: Lock table is out of available locker entries
Can you please tell me how to fix it?
Thank you.

I am trying to give my server a static ip address. This seems to work without any problems, but I can't seem to get an internet connection after this process. I've also changed my dns server to 8.8.8.8 (google dns right?).
OS: Ubuntu Server 12.04 x86
Environment: Virtualbox
File: /etc/network/interfaces:
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.2.10
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.2.0
broadcast 192.168.2.255
gateway 192.168.2.1
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 beta 1. When I try to update & upgrade I get the following error:
Setting up install-info (4.13a.dfsg.1-5ubuntu1) ...
/etc/environment: line 4: LC-ALL=en_US.UTF-8: command not found
dpkg: error processing install-info (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 127
Errors were encountered while processing:
install-info
Does anyone know how to fix this?
Thanks
I own an Ubuntu 10 VPS Server with Apache 2 hosting a Magento website. The first hit to the site from any client takes about 15-20 sec, while the subsequent hits from the same client take 0-1 sec. I suppose it doesn't have to do with Magento caching, because this happens also when the first call is on a very light page and the next calls are on heavy ones.
Does anyone have an idea on what is going wrong here?
I have an interesting problem with communication via standard SSL ports.
Fresh installed Ubuntu 14.04 server + Postfix + Dovecot, SASL authentication provided by Dovecot, self-signed certificate generated trough the Dovecot script mkcert.sh. Redirected ports on ZyWALL USG 200.
I can send and receive e-mails from outside with standard ports 25 and 110, but not over 587.
I am connecting to my server from machine with Windows 8.1 + VMWare Player + Ubuntu 14.04 Desktop + ssh. On Windows host I have installed Avast! antivirus.
When I am trying to telnet from virtual machine to server over 587, it refused connection. But when I turn on Avast! it let me in to message Connected to... Same with nmap. When Avast! is turned on it is show me all SSL ports. When I turned it off, only standard ports appeared. OpenSSL shows me CONNECTED(00000003).
But outside virtual machine directly in Windows 8.1 using nmap with zenmap there are not opened SSL ports in both Avast! states.
From other external linux machines are problems with touching SSL ports same - refused.
I have turned on submission in master.cf and 587 port is correctly listening on 0.0.0.0 in process master.pid which belongs to Postfix. I can telnet, or nmap over port 587 to my domain directly from server. Other ports like 995, 993 are OK on localhost, too.
It is true, that I can't send emails via 587 anyway (Avast! turned on/off), but I can see ports opened.
It is possible, that I have simply bad certificate and Avast! has right one, so with turned it on I can see opened ports?
EDIT:
To be more clear, I can't see or using port 587 everywhere from outside (tried Thunderbird, telnet, openssl, nmap, putty, swaks; both from Linux or Windows machines) and that is my problem. It was only by chance that I saw opened ports when Avast! is turned on.
I just installed Ubuntu Server 12.04 in an office machine with openSSH, DNS and LAMP Server. I also made the IP static and I can access the server in my office premises easily, but when I try to access my server from my home it is not working.
I know I have to make some changes and need to install some firewall (I had just gone through with a couple of posts) but I guess an expert advise will save my time here.
When i upload my rails app via SFTP to production server which is running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS all cyrillic characters in my files look like this:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/347209/chars.png
As you can see, only parts of words are broken. And because of this rails app doesn't start with syntax error.
Also i'm getting errors like
ActionView::Template::Error (incompatible character encodings: ASCII-8BIT and UTF-8)
I have an Ubuntu Virtualbox guest with two network interface, eth0 (NAT) and eth1 (bridged).
I want to connect to a PPTP VPN using eth1, but I don't know how to specify which interface to use. If i just try:
sudo pon myvpn nodetach
It fails with:
Using interface ppp0
Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts/1
Modem hangup
Connection terminated.
Looking at routes with route seems to indicate that eth0 is being used:
x.x.x.x.no 10.0.2.2 255.255.255.255 UGH 0 0 0 eth0
I've just installed Ubuntu 9.10 Edition in VMWare Fusion; the host is Mac OS X. I installed it successfully and I was even able to use. After shutting it down and reopening it, it no longer works. Here's what I see:
I've checked the Virtual Machine settings. It appears as running. I waited for a long time, but there no response yet. Is there anything I can do apart from reinstalling it?
MY Remote desktop was working when i had no security or authentication enabled un ubuntu.
I go to preferences then remote desktop and then uncheck all checkboxes in security tab.
I tried enabling password and now i can connect to server.
I don't have access to server.
is there any way to clear the security setting via terminal
I've installed Ubuntu 12.04.1 in a new server and set up the 4 hard drives with 3 RAID 1 devices, the configuration is such that the first two drives have md0 (swap space) and md1 (/) with the third and fourth drives having md2 (/var).
I've been testing the operation under a drive failure and found that the system boots fine if I remove disk two but if I remove disk one then the system gets to grub and then just restarts. I'm confused as to why grub appears to be loading properly from disk two but then the boot fails.
How can i check which cd drives are attched to computer and is ubuntu detecting them or not

I have a Intel Atom PC that I'm shoe-horning into a role as a media server. I have a 5.1 surround sound speaker set that works pretty well. I want to be able to take the optical out from my cable box or PS3 and route it into the PC so that I can play it surround sound. Is there a low price video card that has 5.1 and optical in that works with Ubuntu?
When clicking on the Clock applet (Clock version 2.26.0) in Gnome (Ubuntu Jaunty) a calendar is shown. Each week starts on Sunday, but I want Monday as starting day. How can I achieve this?
What's a good C and GDK+ 2 integrated development environment (IDE) for developing in Ubuntu?
Please state Pros and Cons for each suggestion.
Notes:
I'm used to using Visual C++ for Windows and C++
On Linux, I usually use gcc and vi (I'd want something friendlier than GDB)
Thanks
I am very new in server management thing. I want to make email accounts like [email protected].
I know something to do with Sendmail thing , but dunno what ?
I am on Ubuntu 10 server.
I've been tasked with hosting our own inhouse mail server
1) i need to have web mail access , imap
2) it needs to be as cheap as possible
i already have an ubuntu server that we use for our samba drives and so far have been very happy with it
I am not apposed to building out another box for a dedicated email server but I'm not familiar enough with Linux or mail hosting programs to even know where to start.
I am setting up a generic Ubuntu server and am trying to figure out the (best) way to partition the machine. Again, this is just a generic one:
The default drive is 20GB.
Some guides show:
Separate /home, /usr, /var and /tmp partitions
Another one suggested something like this:
/ 4GB
/boot 512MB
/tmp 1GB
/home 5GB
/usr 5GB
/var 5GB
What is the best way to accomplish this?
Hello all i've just migrated my desktop machine to Ubuntu 10.04. My problem is that i've just purged a package and can't install this package back. Because I can't see it in the aptitude or apt-get's package list. How can i fix this issue?
Hi everyone,
I run Ubuntu, and If i type the following in a terminal, I start a new instance of memcached, right?
# memcached -vv
How can I target the the current instance of memcached in terminal?
It would help me to see the very-verbose mode on my already running instance.
Thanks
