• MVC Dropdown List isn't binding to the model.

  Hi, I am trying set up a simple dropdown list but I dont seem to be able to get it to bind to the Model. I am using Asp.Net MVC and nhibernate. My dropdown list is declared like so: <%= Html.DropDownListFor(model => model.Project, (IEnumerable<SelectListItem>)ViewData["Projects"], " -- Select -- ", new { name = "Project" })%> I set up the select list like so: ViewData["Projects"] = new SelectList(projectRepository.GetAll(), "EntityGUID", "Name", editEntity.Project); This seems to bind the select list to the Dropdown fine, but the SelectedValue is not set. it shows up as the default --- Select --- Also when I save this data, the dropdown does not bind to the model, I have to manually set the object like so to save it: entity.Project = projectRepository.GetById(new Guid(Request["Project"].ToString())); I believe I have take the correct messures to have this item bind directly to my model. • Cast error on SQLDataReader (entlib 5.0, asp.net 3.5, vb)

  My site is using enterprise library v 5.0. Mainly the DAAB. Some functions such as executescalar, executedataset are working as expected. The problems appear when I start to use Readers I have this function in my includes class: Public Function AssignedDepartmentDetail(ByVal Did As Integer) As SqlDataReader Dim reader As SqlDataReader Dim Command As SqlCommand = db.GetSqlStringCommand("select seomthing from somewhere where something = @did") db.AddInParameter(Command, "@did", Data.DbType.Int32, Did) reader = db.ExecuteReader(Command) reader.Read() Return reader End Function This is called from my aspx.vb like so: reader = includes.AssignedDepartmentDetail(Did) If reader.HasRows Then TheModule = reader("templatefilename") PageID = reader("id") Else TheModule = "#" End If This gives the following error on db.ExecuteReader line: Unable to cast object of type 'Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Data.RefCountingDataReader' to type 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlDataReader'. Can anyone shed any light on how I go about getting this working. Will I always run into problems when dealing with readers via entlib?

• Very slow compile times on Visual Studio

  We are getting very slow compile times, which can take upwards of 20+ minutes on dual core 2GHz, 2G Ram machines. A lot of this is due to the size of our solution which has grown to 70+ projects, as well as VSS which is a bottle neck in itself when you have a lot of files. (swapping out VSS is not an option unfortunately, so I don't want this to descend into a VSS bash) We are looking at combing projects (not nice, as we like the separation of concerns, but is a good opportunity to refactor away some dead wood). We are also looking at having multiple solutions to achieve greater separation of concerns and quicker compile times for each element of the application. This I can see will become a dll hell as we try to keep things in synch. I am interested to know how other teams have dealt with this scaling issue, what do you do when your code base reaches a critical mass that you are wasting half the day watching the status bar deliver compile messages UPDATE Apologies, I neglected to mention this is a C# solution. Thanks for all the cpp suggestions, but it's been a few years since I've had to worry about headers. At a distance I say I miss C++, but I'm not sure I want to go back EDIT: Nice suggestions that have helped so far (not saying there aren't other nice suggestions below, just what has helped) New 3GHz laptop - the power of lost utilization works wonders when whinging to management Disable Anti Virus during compile 'Disconnecting' from VSS (actually the network) during compile - I may get us to remove VS-VSS integration altogether and stick to using the VSS UI Still not rip-snorting through a compile, but every bit helps. Orion did mention in a comment that generics may have a play also. From my tests there does appear to be a minimal performance hit, but not high enough to sure - compile times can be inconsistent due to disc activity. Due to time limitations, my tests didn't include as many Generics, or as much code, as would appear in live system, so that may accumulate. I wouldn't avoid using generics where they are supposed to be used, just for compile time performance WORKAROUND We are testing the practice of building new areas of the application in new solutions, importing in the latest dlls as required, them integrating them into the larger solution when we are happy with them. We may also do them same to existing code by creating temporary solutions that just encapsulate the areas we need to work on, and throwing them away after reintegrating the code. We need to weigh up the time it will take to reintegrate this code against the time we gain by not having Rip Van Winkle like experiences with rapid recompiling during development.

• Variable number of arguments in an Axis2 POJO

  I have a web service that I built with Axis2/Java. The web service will take in a list of objects and will process them. I'll use the following operation as an example. public class AddToDatabaseService{ public void addToDatabase(String name1, String name2, String name3, ....) { //add names to database } } I want the caller of my web service to use a URI like: http://localhost:8080/axis2/services/addToDatabase?name1=Joe&name2=Bob&name3=Kelly&name4=... I'm aware this is not compilable code and the idea is still there. Is this even possible with SOAP-based web services? I know this is possible to do with RESTful services because you can just take the HttpServletRequest request object and do Enumeration enumeration = request.getParameterNames() and iterate through them. I'm looking for the equivalent of that in web services POJO's with Axis2. A link or an sample program would be great! Thanks.

How do I fix this?

• NATUPnP IStaticPortMappingCollection::Add returns HRESULT 0x80040214

  I'm attempting to use Microsoft's NATUPnP library to create a port mapping. Unfortunately, I'm unable to. My router supports UPnP, it is enabled, and I can create mappings with other (pre-built) applications. I can also read existing mappings. When I call the Add function, it fails and returns HRESULT 0x80040214 (which is undocumented). I have absolutely no idea what might be going on. IStaticPortMapping* newMapping = NULL; hr = portMappings->Add(27015, L"TCP", 27015, L"MYCOMPUTER", VARIANT_TRUE, L"TestMapping", &newMapping); You can see the reference for this function at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa366148%28v=VS.85%29.aspx. The portMappings object is, of course, valid; I use it earlier in the code to enumerate over the existing mappings. If anyone has experience with this and might know what my problem is, I'd appreciate any help.

• TaskFactory.StartNew versus ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem

  Apparently the TaskFactory.StartNew method in .NET 4.0 is intended as a replacement for ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem (according to this post, anyway). My question is simple: does anyone know why? Does TaskFactory.StartNew have better performance? Does it use less memory? Or is it mainly for the additional functionality provided by the Task class? In the latter case, does StartNew possibly have worse performance than QueueUserWorkItem? It seems to me that StartNew would actually potentially use more memory than QueueUserWorkItem, since it returns a Task object with every call and I would expect that to result in more memory allocation. In any case, I'm interested to know which is more appropriate for a high-performance scenario.

  I have my own TreeView control which is completely OwnerDraw'ed: myTreeView.DrawMode = TreeViewDrawMode.OwnerDrawAll; What I try to achieve is to draw the opened/closed glyph according to the current explorer theme. Especially on Vista and Win7 boxes I'd like to see the new glyphes (black triangles) instead of the plus/minus signs. I know, for a non-OwnerDraw'ed TreeView this can be achieved as follows which works perfectly: myTreeView.HandleCreated += delegate(object sender, EventArgs args) { MyNativeMethods.SetWindowTheme(myTreeView.Handle, "explorer", null); }; I thought a VisualStyleRenderer let me paint the glyphs theme-aware: VisualStyleRenderer r = new VisualStyleRenderer(VisualStyleElement.TreeView.Glyph.Opened); r.DrawBackground(e.Graphics, e.Bounds); The code above unfortunately draws the minus sign in all cases. It looks like the VisualStyleRenderer does not honour the theme setting. Can someone shed some light on this? Thanks!

The second argument is defineds as a string and I have attempted to input it directly as a string and base64_encoded string (error: Length of the data to decrypt is invalid), an array and an associative array both string and base64_encoded string and get the error above. Any help would be appreciated.

• Problem finding office DCOM in Component Services in Windows 7

  I have a problem getting my word and excel to work in ASP .NET. I get the error message: {System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {000209FF-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} failed due to the following error: 80070005. at xxx.Utility.WordDocument..ctor(String filePath, HttpServerUtility util) at customer_communication.BuCreate_click(Object sender, EventArgs e) in This means I have access problem to the DCOM files. In Vista this isnt a problem, all I have to do there is to run "dcomcnfg" and in there find the Microsoft Excel dcom file. In Windows 7 I cant find it, and I have no idea what to do now... If anyone could help me that would be great!

( both got the same structure) An object Reporting containing for one logRequest, a list of logReport with a date. I tryed to set an EmbededId, that would be an attribute of the logRequest. • General type conversion without risking Exceptions

  I am working on a control that can take a number of different datatypes (anything that implements IComparable). I need to be able to compare these with another variable passed in. If the main datatype is a DateTime, and I am passed a String, I need to attempt to convert the String to a DateTime to perform a Date comparison. if the String cannot be converted to a DateTime then do a String comparison. So I need a general way to attempt to convert from any type to any type. Easy enough, .Net provides us with the TypeConverter class. Now, the best I can work out to do to determine if the String can be converted to a DateTime is to use exceptions. If the ConvertFrom raises an exception, I know I cant do the conversion and have to do the string comparison. Most variable types have a TryParse method which returns a boolean to allow you to determine if the conversion has succeeded or not. But there is no TryConvert method available to TypeConverter. CanConvertFrom only dermines if it is possible to convert between these types and doesnt consider the actual data to be converted. The IsValid method is also useless. Any ideas? EDIT I cannot use AS and IS. I do not know either data types at compile time. So I dont know what to As and Is to!!! EDIT Ok nailed the bastard.   Hello I've a windows forms application with MS SQL Server 2005 as the back end. I have written code in the form to call few stored procedures using SqlConnection, SqlCommand objects and i properly dispose everything. I've disposed sqlcommand object by calling oSqlCommand.Dispose() But i witnessed my application consuming huge amount of memory. I basically pass large XML files as SqlParameters. I finally decided to memory profile it using RedGate Memory profiler and i noticed that the System.Data.SqlClient.SqlParameters are not disposed. Any insights on this? Thanks NLV

  hi All, I am using Domino.dll to access a NSF file in C#.NET 2.0 I am using multiple thread to access 4 NSF files at a time, its working fine for small NSF files, but if i try to access large NSF files i get the Out of Memory Exception and Maximum number of memory segments that Notes can support has been exceeded. This exception usually occurs when i access NotesDocument object from a large NSFVIewFolder in a while loop. I am releasing the instance of the NotesDocument by using the Marshal.ReleaseComObject(NotesDocument); still it throws the same exception. My goal is to access multiple NSF files at a time (MAX 4 NSF files at a time) for large NSF files (may be in GB). Kindly help me, if you got some solution. Thanks.

• Asp.Net 3.5 Routing to Asmx Webservice?

  I was looking for a way to route http://www.example.com/WebService.asmx to http://www.example.com/service/ using only the ASP.NET 3.5 Routing framework without needing to configure the IIS server. Until now I have done what most tutorials told me, added a reference to the routing assembly, configured stuff in the web.config, added this to the Global.asax: protected void Application_Start(object sender, EventArgs e) { RouteCollection routes = RouteTable.Routes; routes.Add( "WebService", new Route("service/{*Action}", new WebServiceRouteHandler()) ); } ...created this class: public class WebServiceRouteHandler : IRouteHandler { public IHttpHandler GetHttpHandler(RequestContext requestContext) { // What now? } } ...and the problem is right there, I don't know what to do. The tutorials and guides I've read use routing for pages, not webservices. Is this even possible? Ps: The route handler is working, I can visit /service/ and it throws the NotImplementedException I left in the GetHttpHandler method.

• timetable in a jTable

  I want to create a timetable in a jTable. For the top row it will display from monday to sunday and the left colume will display the time of the day with 2h interval e.g 1st colume (0000 - 0200), 2nd colume (0200 - 0400) .... And if i click a button the timing will change from 2h interval to 1h interval. I do not want to hardcode it because i need to do for 2h, 1h, 30min , 15min, 1min, 30sec and 1 sec interval and it will take too long for me to hardcode. Can anyone show me an example or help me create an example for the 2h to 1h interval so that i know what to do? • Get Layout Shape Corresponding to Slide Shape

  In PP2007 and using VBA, how can I get the placeholder shape on a Slide Master layout that is the "master" for a placeholder shape on the slide? I am currently using a loop to compare the position and size of the slide placeholder with the position and shape of each placeholder shape in the slide's layout, but this isn't fool-proof. For example, if the placeholder shape is moved on the slide, its position may no longer match the position of any placeholder shapes in the slide's layout. I could reapply the slide's layout to snap placeholders back into position, but that's not what I want to do. Something in the object model like "Shape.Master" would be ideal but, of course, that doesn't exist.
