• Wifi installation issues on Ubuntu 10.10

  Linux newbie here, anyway so here is the problem, I run Ubuntu 10.10 and I have a Sitecom 300N x2 Wireless Network dongle with chipset 8192SU, I used ndiswrapper to install my Windows Wireless driver because Sitecom doesn't have a linux driver, it says hardware present but it doesn't find any Wireless networks, nor does it connect to one. What can I do? • How to get bearable 2D and 3D performance on AMD Radeon HD 6950?

  I have had an AMD Radeon HD 6950 (i.e., Cayman series) for a couple years now, and I have tried a lot of combinations of drivers and settings with terrible results. I'm completely at a loss as to how to proceed. The open source driver has much better 2D performance, but it offloads all OpenGL rendering to the CPU. What I've tried so far: All the latest stable Ubuntu releases in the period, plus one Linux Mint release. All the latest stable AMD Catalyst Proprietary Display Drivers, and currently 13.1. The unofficial wiki installation instructions for every Ubuntu version and the semi-official Ubuntu instructions. All the tips and tweaks I could find for Minecraft (Optifine, reducing settings to minimum), VLC (postprocessing at minimum, rendering at native video size), Catalyst Control Center (flipped every lever in there) and X11 (some binary toggles I can no longer remember). Results: Typically 13-15 FPS in Minecraft, 30 max (100+ in Windows with the same driver version). Around 10 FPS in Team Fortress 2 using the official Steam client. Choppy video playback, in Flash and with VLC. CPU use goes through the roof when rendering video (150% for 1080p on YouTube in Chromium, 100% for 1080p H264 in VLC). glxgears shows 12.5 FPS when maximized. fgl_glxgears shows 10 FPS when maximized. Hardware details from lshw: Motherboard ASUS P6X58D-E CPU Intel Core i7 CPU 950 @ 3.07GHz (never overclocked; 64 bit) 6 GB RAM Video card product "Cayman PRO [Radeon HD 6950]", vendor "Hynix Semiconductor (Hyundai Electronics)" 2 x 1920x1200 monitors, both connected with HDMI. I feel I must be missing something absolutely fundamental here. Is there no accelerated support for anything on 64-bit architectures? Does a dual monitor completely mess up the driver? $ fglrxinfo display: :0 screen: 0 OpenGL vendor string: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. OpenGL renderer string: AMD Radeon HD 6900 Series OpenGL version string: 4.2.11995 Compatibility Profile Context $ glxinfo | grep 'direct rendering' direct rendering: Yes I am currently using the open source driver, with the following results: Full frame rate and low CPU load when playing 1080p video. Black screen (but music in the background) in Team Fortress 2. Similar performance in Minecraft as the Catalyst driver. In hindsight obvious, since both end up offloading the rendering to the CPU. My /var/log/Xorg.0.log after upgrading to AMD Catalyst 13.1. Some possibly important lines: (WW) Falling back to old probe method for fglrx (WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:0@3:0:1) found The generated xorg.conf. The disabled "monitor" 0-DFP9 is actually an A/V receiver, which sometimes confuses the monitor drivers when turned on/off (but not in Windows). All three "monitor" devices are connected with HDMI. Edit: Chris Carter's suggestion to use the xorg-edgers PPA (Catalyst 13.1) resulted in some improvement, but still pretty bad performance overall: Minecraft stabilizes at 13-17 FPS, but at least the CPU load is "only" at 45-60%. Still 150% CPU use for 1080p video rendering on YouTube in Chromium. Massive improvement for 1080p H264 in VLC: 40-50% CPU use and no visible jitter glxgears performance about doubled to 25-30 FPS when maximized. fgl_glxgears still at ~10 FPS when maximized.

• wifi hardware switch doesn't work on a Dell 1018

  I have a problem with my Dell 1018 Inspiron. I can't switch the wifi on, through the key on the keyboard. I think it's a driver problem since Ubuntu 11.10. This are the versions i tried: Ubuntu 10.04 / 10.10 It's possible to install the driver by hand: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:lexical/hwe-wireless sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install rtl8192ce-dkms Ubuntu 11.04 It works out of the box Ubuntu 11.10 / 12.04 I haven’t found any solution for these versions. The "ppa:lexical/hwe-wireless" doesn't work for these versions. It says Can not find package rtl8192ce-dkms. The window of additional drivers is empty. So I can't install the driver. The wired network works good.   Hi all, I got ruby 1.8.7 (native compiled), rails 2.3.4, OSX 10.6.2 and also sqlite3-ruby. The error I'm getting when accessing the rails app is NameError: uninitialized constant SQLite3::Driver::Native::Driver::API History: I upgraded to snow leopard by migrating my apps with a FW-cable from my old macbook to the new one. Everything was running perfectly for months, but Yesterday I needed to install watir, which was dependant on rb-appscript, which didn't build due a "wrong architecture" error in libsqlite3.dylib. I figured the build was made on the old machine, so i wanted to rebuild sqlite3-ruby: $ sudo gem uninstall sqlite3-ruby $ sudo gem install sqlite3-ruby Building native extensions. This could take a while... I've tried to install macports sqlite3 (sudo port install sqlite3) and use that instead, but with same result... so i rebuild sqlite3 from scratch.. download-configure-make-make install. After that, the gem now builds perfectly, but doesn't work in rails, giving the error in the top of this article. I'm not really sure where to go from here because I've tried the following Rebuild sqlite3 from newest source (http://www.sqlite.org/download.html) Reinstalled sqlite3-ruby (sudo gem uninstall sqlite3-ruby && sudo gem install sqlite3-ruby) Used sqlite3 from macports (sudo port install sqlite3 && sudo gem install sqlite3-ruby) Reinstalled rails (sudo gem install rails sqlite3-ruby ) and updated environment.rb to rails 2.3.5. No avail, I still get this error: NameError: uninitialized constant SQLite3::Driver::Native::Driver::AP from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/activesupport-2.3.5/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:105:in const_missing' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/sqlite3-ruby-1.2.5/lib/sqlite3/driver/native/driver.rb:76:in open' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/sqlite3-ruby-1.2.5/lib/sqlite3/database.rb:76:in `initialize' Btw, I have Xcode installed from the Snow Leopard CD. • Problem using Hibernate-Search

  Hi, I am using hibernate search for my application. It is well configured and running perfectly till some time back, when it stopped working suddenly. The reason according to me being the number of my model (bean) classes. I have some 90 classes, which I add to my configuration, while building my Hibernate Configuration. When, I disable hibernate search (remove the search annotations and use Configuration instead of AnnotationsConfiguration), I try to start my application, it Works fine. But,the same app when I enable search, it just hangs up. I tried debugging and found the exact place where it hangs. After adding all the class to my AnnotationsConfiguration object, when I say cfg.buildSessionfactory(), It never comes out of that statement. (I have waited for hours!!!) Also when I decrease the number of my model classes (like say to half i.e. 50) it comes out of that statement and the application works fine.. Can Someone tell why is this happening?? My versions of hibernate are: hibernate-core-3.3.1.GA.jar hibernate-annotations-3.4.0.GA.jar hibernate-commons-annotations-3.1.0.GA.jar hibernate-search-3.1.0.GA.jar Also if need to avoid using AnnotationsConfiguration, I read that I need to configure the search event listeners explicitly.. can anyone list all the neccessary listeners and their respective classes? • GRUB-2 Bootloader fails to load for lack of floppy drive. Ubuntu 10.4 & Windows XP

  2010.07.21 while trying to install Ubuntu 10.4 Hello all, I've been trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my Dell workstation and am unable to get the Grub-2 bootloader to load properly. It seems to be failing for lack of a floppy drive on the system resulting in an error message that reads : error: fd0 cannot get C/H/S values. I've gone through the Grub-2 page at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2 to no avail and other sources having similar problems have likewise turned up no solutions. I would certainly appreciate any insight, here's the background: A while back I was trying to install a different version of Linux and had the same problems, then had to set the project aside for a bit. I don't think this has anything to do with Linux or Ubuntu per se, but rather Grub. The system is an old (4-5 years) Dell workstation that has one drive (128 GB) set up for Windows XP and a second new drive (500GB) which I installed for Linux. There is a DVD/CD drive and the system contains no floppy drive at all. In one attempt to get this working I tried modifying the BIOS to indicate there was a floppy drive - this created a failure earlier in the chain with the BIOS failing to load properly, not unexpected, just a shot in the dark at that point. At the moment I am considering just running out to buy and install a cheap floppy drive to see if that helps. I'll never use the thing though so I'd rather find a solution that doesn't require me to spend money on useless hardware. • Unable to connect to MS Access database through JDBC on Win 7 64-bit

  Hello. I've been trying to connect to a MS Access 2007 database through JDBC. My JDK is JDK 1.6u18 64-bit and OS is Windows 7 64-bit. But problem is I am unable to create a DSN using Windows\system32\odbcad32.exe because it doesn't show ODBC drivers for MS Access at all, it's only showing drivers for MS SQL Server. When tried to click on Configure for "MS Access Database" (which is an already created DSN, I guess), it first shows error message : "The setup routines for the Microsoft Access Drivers (*.mdb, *.accdb) ODBC Driver could not be found. Please reinstall the driver." And then another message : "Errors found! The specified DSN contains an architecture mismatch between the Driver and Application." I cannot reinstall the MDAC as it doesn't work with Windows 7 (which comes with its own WDAC). The odbcad32.exe in Windows\SysWOW64 does let me create a DSN for MS Access, it shows the drivers installed properly. If I connect to the SQL Server 2008 Database Engine on the server running SSIS, I can retrieve data from Ingres over the ODBC DSN by running the following command: SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET( 'MSDASQL' , 'DSN=IngresODBC;UID=testuser;PWD=testpass' , 'SELECT * FROM iitables') So I am quite sure that the ODBC setup is correct. If I try the same query with SQL Server style bracketed identifier quotes, I get an error, as Ingres doesn't support this syntax. SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET( 'MSDASQL' , 'DSN=IngresODBC;UID=testuser;PWD=testpass' , 'SELECT * FROM [iitables]') The error is "[Ingres][Ingres 10.0 ODBC Driver][Ingres 10.0]line 1, Unexpected character '['.". What I am finding is that I get the same error when I try to add tables from Ingres to an SSIS Data Source View. The initial step of selecting the ODBC Provider works fine, and I am shown a list of tables / views to add. I then select any table, and try to add it to the view, and get "ERROR [5000A] [Ingres][Ingres 10.0 ODBC Driver][Ingres 10.0]line 3, Unexpected character '['.". Following Ed Harper's suggestion of creating a named query also seems to be stymied. If I put into my named query the following text: SELECT * FROM "iitables" I still get an error: "ERROR [5000A] [Ingres][Ingres 10.0 ODBC Driver][Ingres 10.0]line 2, Unexpected character '['". According to the error, the query text passed by SSIS to ODBC was: SELECT [iitables].* FROM ( SELECT * FROM "iitables" ) AS [iitables] It seems that SSIS assumes that bracket quote characters are acceptable, when they aren't. How can I persuade it not to use them? Double quotes are acceptable.

• .net Value Class sorting with IComparable

  I'm running into an issue using a DataGridView bound to a iBindingListView implementation (third party dll) attached to a large collection. There's a certain property in my collection type, named MyDateTime, which is a value class similar to DateTime, but also with some legacy code. This VALUE CLASS implements iComparable, iComparable<T>, and iEquatable<T>. The issue I'm having is this: When I apply a sort to the iBindingListView, or the Automatic Sorting provided by the DGV on the MyDateTimeColumn, it ALWAYS uses the non-generic iComparer, causing hundreds of thousands of unnecessary boxing and unboxing. When I remove the non-generic iComparer, the generic one is still not used, it just does a string compare on the .ToString(). Am I missing something? Why is my generic comparer not bieng called on a sort?

• Debugging android application on HTC Hero

  Is it possible to connect the ADB with an HTC Hero? I tried following the instructions for the Win USB driver but when I try to install the driver I just get a generic message saying that there was a problem installing the driver. Looking at the supported devices, the HTC Hero isn't listed. Is this even possible? As a note, I've tried removing drivers and then re-adding using USBDeview and I've also tried adding in the line ";HTC Hero %USB\VID_0BB4&PID_0FFE.DeviceDescRelease%=androidusb.Dev, USB\Vid_0bb4&Pid_0ffe&Rev_0100" in the inf file for the driver.
