  Devoxx UK is taking place next week (12th and 13th June) in London. As with any Devoxx conference, this UK edition will have a nice mix of content, an impressive list of speakers and obviously Java EE will be well will covered too:  Apache TomEE, Java EE Web Profile and more on Tomcat (David Blevins) Myths, Tales and Voodoo - About Java EE and Testing (Adam Bien) 50 new features of Java EE 7 (Antonio Goncalves & Arun Gupta) Java EE 7 Hands-on Lab (Arun Gupta) In addition, there will be 2 BoF related to Java EE on Thursday evening, the first BoF will be about the Java EE platform and the second one will be about the Java EE Reference Implementation, i.e. GlassFish. I will participate in the Java EE Community BoF where will discuss Java EE general but with all recent activities, I suspect that a large portion of the BoF will spent on discussing the current plans for Java EE 8.  Right after and in the same room, I will join Steve Millidge of C2B2 for the GlassFish is here to stay! • Where can I find a package for "project looking Glass"? ("The Java desktop")

  Hi, I really really want to find this package. Because after I saw the youtube clip I realized it's just one of those things I must have done before I die. This tutorial would be great if the repository were online. My question is: Where can I find the file, and how can I install it without changing my current desktop? The project was called "project looking glass" and was released in 2007. It is now an "inactive open source project", according to its Wikipedia article. @Takkat found this VERY good live cd, hope it works.

• In what cases should I install (and configure) Postfix as a desktop user?

  Possible cases: 1) I plan to do Debian packaging (this case is the motivation since postfix gets installed as a dependency of some development packages, so it means that in such a case might be necessary). 2) I plan to use Evolution and a Internet provider mail account. 3) I plan to use gmail. Surely if I read Postfix documentation I may find the answer, but its huge and couldn't find it. In any case how (or where) should I find the answer to a question like that by myself? (I really tried)

• How can I clear history and settings for the Remote Desktop Viewer (Vinagre)?

  How do I clear all the settings for Vinagre to take it back to a brand-new, virgin state? I accidentally typed a connection in wrong and I cannot figure out how to delete it. Also some of my connections are not working correctly and I think that if I could flush the whole thing clean it might fix those issues. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but it remembers the previous settings/connections.

• Cannot see user desktop (Applications, Places, System...) when I log in

  I am very new to Ubuntu. I recently got a new laptop running Windows 7. I am using Virtual Box and just installed the Ubuntu 12.10 ISO as a new Virtual Machine within Virtual Box. Everything seemed to install just fine and I even added the Guest Additions under Devices. The problem is that I cannot see the menus and my login information. The virtual machine says it is running; however, I do not have the Applications, Places, System, etc. tray to select from. Is there something I am supposed to do after logging in to get this? I entered my password and everything seemed fine, I just don't have those drop-down menus available...

• How to sanely configure security policy in Tomcat 6

  I'm using Tomcat 6.0.24, as packaged for Ubuntu Karmic. The default security policy of Ubuntu's Tomcat package is pretty stringent, but appears straightforward. In /var/lib/tomcat6/conf/policy.d, there are a variety of files that establish default policy. Worth noting at the start: I've not changed the stock tomcat install at all -- no new jars into its common lib directory(ies), no server.xml changes, etc. Putting the .war file in the webapps directory is the only deployment action. the web application I'm deploying fails with thousands of access denials under this default policy (as reported to the log thanks to the -Djava.security.debug="access,stack,failure" system property). turning off the security manager entirely results in no errors whatsoever, and proper app functionality What I'd like to do is add an application-specific security policy file to the policy.d directory, which seems to be the recommended practice. I added this to policy.d/100myapp.policy (as a starting point -- I would like to eventually trim back the granted permissions to only what the app actually needs): grant codeBase "file:${catalina.base}/webapps/ROOT.war" { permission java.security.AllPermission; }; grant codeBase "file:${catalina.base}/webapps/ROOT/-" { permission java.security.AllPermission; }; grant codeBase "file:${catalina.base}/webapps/ROOT/WEB-INF/-" { permission java.security.AllPermission; }; grant codeBase "file:${catalina.base}/webapps/ROOT/WEB-INF/lib/-" { permission java.security.AllPermission; }; grant codeBase "file:${catalina.base}/webapps/ROOT/WEB-INF/classes/-" { permission java.security.AllPermission; }; Note the thrashing around attempting to find the right codeBase declaration. What's interesting is that: it doesn't exist in this context the fact that the file doesn't exist ends up throwing a security exception, rather than java.io.File.exists() simply returning false (although I suppose that's just a matter of the semantics of the read permission). Another workaround (besides just disabling the security manager in tomcat) is to add an open-ended permission to my policy file: grant { permission java.security.AllPermission; }; I presume this is functionally equivalent to turning off the security manager. I suppose I must be getting the codeBase declaration in my grants subtly wrong, but I'm not seeing it at the moment.

• Coding solution to WAR installation error (Websphere Portal 6.0) ?

A week ago, the WAR file produced by Rational Application Developer could be installed on the Portal server with no problems. Yesterday I made some seemingly minor changes to two JSP files and their associated "pagecode" Java files, and attempting to update the WAR on the server (using the Portal Administration web interface) now produces an error message. The WAR upload works, and the system shows me the correct list of portlets in the WAR file, but clicking "Finish" gives me a page with the error message "EJPAQ1319E: Cannot install the selected WAR file. Explanation: A portlet application containing legacy portlets can only be updated with another portlet application that contains legacy portlets. The same is true for standard portlet applications. User Response: Modify the portlet.xml of the application such that it matches the original API type, standard or legacy and try again. However, the "portlet.xml" file has not changed in about a month, and I've done several WAR updates for this application in that time with no problems. The problem seems to be caused by the code changes I did yesterday, but I have no clue why a few lines of code would do this. Any ideas?

• Android edtftpj/PRo SFTP heap worker problem

  Hi I am using edtftpj-pro3.1 trial copy in my android app to make SFTP connection with the server. After few connections with the server with 5-6 file transfers, my app is crashing with following exception. Is it causing the problem or what could be the problem?? I tried setParallelMode(false) in SSHFTPClient, but it is not working. • App starts in 1.5 emulator but doesn't in 1.6

  My app works on 1.5 emulator and 1.5 device. When i try to start it on 1.6 emulator, it produces strange exceptions (doesn't even start). I don't have any 1.6 device to try this app if it works on a real device. I get some warnings in Eclipse ( warning: Ignoring InnerClasses attribute for an anonymous inner class that doesn't come with an associated EnclosingMethod attribute. This class was probably produced by a broken compiler.) and get cant rid of them (i think they come from some apache jars that i need to make http multipart posts). Is it possible that this jars are cause for my exceptions in 1.6 or is it something else?   I'm trying to test that I'm throwing an exception when appropriate. In my test class I have a method similar to the following: public void testParseException() { try { ClientEntitySingleton.getInstance(); fail("should have thrown exception."); } catch (RuntimeException re) { assertEquals( "<exception message>", re.getMessage()); } } This works fine (green bar) whenever I run that single unitTest class. However, when I add that test to a testSuite, I get a red bar Unit test failure reported on the exception. One more thing... it works in the testSuite, if it's the first test in the suite. Actually, I'm doing two of these tests and just figured out that if I make them the first two tests in the suite, all is good, but I get this failure if a "regular" test precedes it. So I have a work-around, but no real answer. Any ideas?   This is driving me up the wall. I have checked and rechecked spelling and paths. I have tried just about every combination of paths, including relative, absolute, and full http paths. I have unzipped the jar file and can see AppletClient.class. Also, in the source of the project, it is spelled that way (casing and all). I have tried with/without the parameters. I have changed the names of the archive jars in the applet include tag just to see if I get a different error for bad file names (same error). I have manually done GETs on the jars to make sure the server is responding to the requests (it is). I have tried with and without the codebase tag, with all different varieties of paths (start getting bad "magic number" errors on those). I know that this error sometimes pops up when a dependency fails to load, so it can be misleading, but all dependencies are present, accounted for, and are fetchable via manual GETs. Between each and every attempt I always clear my cache in FireFox. These problems are reproduced in IE8 and Chrome as well. Per my Java Console from the browser, I am running Java Plug-in 1.6.0_20. This is from the same machine that I develop the applet on, which runs fine via Eclipse. Finally, I kicked on Fiddler2, and I don't see a single request for the jar files anywhere The host site is running from my Visual Studio debugger, so it's running on localhost. But I see the requests for all the other resources on Fiddler. Just... no Jars. ANYWHERE. I clear the log, cleared my browser cache, and did a ctrl-R refresh. And still, not a single Jar request on the Fiddler log. I even did a delayed write (with JS) of the applet tag after the page loaded, once all the Fiddler activity slowed down. The element gets written to the document (and I can see the 100x100 Java error window), but not a single request shows up on Fiddler. Any suggestions, before I go crawl into the corner and cry myself to sleep?   I have an activity that I force keyboard to appears using, InputMethodManager inputMethodManager=(InputMethodManager)getSystemService(Context.INPUT_METHOD_SERVICE); inputMethodManager.toggleSoftInput(InputMethodManager.SHOW_FORCED, 0); keyboard appears properly and also obscured when needed. Problem is when I finish the activity, app crashes. If the activity never shows keyboard or shows it without start editing text, it is finished with no errors but if you just write one single character or more, app will crash.   Remember how previous versions of Windows had an Internet Explorer icon on the desktop, and you could right-click it to quickly access the Internet Options screen? It’s completely gone in Windows 7, but a geeky hack can bring it back. Microsoft removed this feature to comply with all those murky legal battles they’ve had, and their alternate suggestion is to create a standard shortcut to iexplore.exe on the Desktop, but it’s not the same thing. Bring Back the Internet Explorer Namespace Icon in Windows 7 the Easy Way If you just want the IE icon back, all you need to do is download the RealInternetExplorerIcon.zip file, extract the contents, and then double-click on the w7_ie_icon_restore.reg file. That’s all you have to do. There’s also an undo registry file there if you want to get rid of it. Download the Real Internet Explorer Icon Registry Hack Manual Registry Hack If you prefer doing things the manual way, or just really want to understand how this hack works, you can follow through the manual steps below to learn how it was done, but we’ll have to warn you that it’s a lot of steps. Final Registry Hack Adjustments Click on the following key, which should still be viewable in your Registry editor window from the last step. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30301D} Double-click LocalizedString in the right-hand pane and type the following data to rename the icon. Internet Explorer Select the following key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30301D}\shell Add a subkey and name it as Properties, then select the Properties key, double-click the (default) value and type the following: P&roperties Create a String value named Position, and type the following data bottom At this point the window should look something like this: Under Properties, create a subkey and name it as Command, and then set its (default) value as follows: control.exe inetcpl.cpl Navigate down to the following key, and then delete the value named LegacyDisable HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ CLSID \ {871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30301D} \ shell \ OpenHomePage Now head to the this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ Desktop \ NameSpace Create a subkey named {871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30301D} (which is the custom GUID that we used earlier in this article.) Press F5 to refresh the Desktop, and here is how the Internet Explorer icon would look like, finally. That’s it! It only took 24 steps, but you made it through to the end—of course, you could just download the registry hack and get the icon back with a double-click. • How do I install a 32-bit Java runtime on an amd64 server with multiarch?

  I'm a long time Ubuntu user, but I haven't been following the community for the last several versions. I just did fresh default minimal amd64 install of Oneiric and I need a 32-bit JRE for a particular application. I last did this on 10.10, so I am not familiar with the multiarch stuff. Instead of installing ia32-libs, I read a bit and tried: aptitude install default-jre-headless:i386 But that just got me: The following NEW packages will be installed: default-jre-headless{b} openjdk-6-jre-headless{ab} The following packages are RECOMMENDED but will NOT be installed: icedtea-6-jre-cacao icedtea-6-jre-jamvm 0 packages upgraded, 2 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Need to get 27.3 MB of archives. After unpacking 82.1 MB will be used. The following packages have unmet dependencies: default-jre-headless: Depends: java-common which is a virtual package. openjdk-6-jre-headless: Depends: openjdk-6-jre-lib (>= 6b23~pre10-0ubuntu5) which is a virtual package. • Where should I store 3rd party jar (Java archive) files?

  Hi folks, What would be the best place to save jar files of libraries I want to use in a project, that are not in any repositories, and how should I set permissions? Should I put them in /usr/share/java, or is it better to store them somewhere in my home folder? What would be the most usefull access rights? Does it make sense to follow the convention in /usr/share/java of making a symlink with the package name to the specific version of the jar, and follow the permissions as used there?

I have installed (and am using for different purposes) Oracle JDK (manually, from official Oracle distribution files) on XUbuntu but I think Firefox Java plugin still uses OpenJDK. How to set up and make sure Firefox to use a specific Oracle JDK?
