  im sure you guys must have seen the shift happens video series. here's a link to them : http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=shift+happens&search_type=&aq=f also, the recent hungry beast video about google, which can be found here: (SO doesnt allow new users more than one hyperlink, so please search on youtube for this one) what i'd like to ask you guys is this: is there a program that enables such videos to be made quickly or is it really just the creative genius of the respective authors? i think vidoes like these are extremely useful when you want to make an impact and would find many uses for such a program in my line of work. im hoping somebody can point me in the right direction. ps. i DO know of animoto, so please dont suggest that :P the problem with animoto is that it doesnt allow text manipulation like these videos. to be fair, that is a great product in itself, but im sure if you take a look, you'll see the difference that im talking abuot.

  Hi Guys My Company is running a lots of batch jobs to process data for partners. We used to use sql server agent to execute batch process. I found it's very difficult to get batch process information like log or status when i working on sql server's agent. So I'd like to change my company's job scheduling process to another stable solution But I dind't know which solutions to choose. I tried to find as same solution as CA Autosys. My Company use window server system. We shoud consider framework or solution should be configured using solution's api because i plan to make a asp.net web application to manage our job shceduler. What kinds of job scheduler Framework or inexpensive solution do you suggest? Regards, Park PS: I think Quartz Framework has a good reputation on J2EE system. But I am not sure Quartz.NET is as good as orginal java version.

  What will be the exact definition of leap year ? AFAIK "A year which is divisible by 4 is a leap year.But for century years' the years which are divisible by 400 is a leap year." But that definition makes 100, 200, 300, 400.... upto 1700 NOT LEAP years! But in Gregorian calender all of them are all leap year,check this out. You can also try "call 1700" in Linux to verify. So the correct algorithm foe leap year would be if ( (year % 4 == 0) && ( year <= 1700 || year % 100 != 0 || year % 400 == 0 )) printf("%d is a leap year.\n", year); else printf("%d is not a leap year.\n", year); But is this specific to Gregorian calender ? Even if that is the case why is it not mentioned here ? Regards, PS:The history of Gregorian callender seems interesting check out the September month of 1752.

• Do i *have* to use ObservableCollection in Silverlight WCF client?

  When accessing Silverlight in WCF you get proxies generated with ObservableCollection Thats fine when you're databinding, but a little clumsy when you're just calling a method. For instance the following service method : [OperationContract] public SearchOrdersMsgOut SearchOrders(ShippingStatusType[] shippingStatuses, string[] orderId) { } gets generated with ObservableCollection. What! They're just parameters. Why would I ever want to 'observe' them? I'm fine if I have to do this - but it seems like there should be a way to force simple array structures when I know I'm never databinding - especially on input messages. I'd much rather do this : searchCriteria.PaymentStatus = new [] { PaymentStatusType.PaymentFailed, PaymentStatusType.Unpaid }; than this : searchCriteria.PaymentStatus = new ObservableCollection<PaymentStatusType> { PaymentStatusType.PaymentFailed, PaymentStatusType.Unpaid }; Is there a way? PS. I do actually use a SearchCriteria object for my search criteria - but I simplified for this example wondering if parameters were handled differently.

  I have 2 mysql tables : Question with the following columns : id, question, nranswers Nranswers must be a number from 1 to 5 And the other table is Answers with the following columns: userid, answer . Now the problem is that I want to get the replies for each answer for one question(id 22 let's say) . P.S. If the nranswers is 3, the result should look like this: (the right number means how many times the reply number was chosen) 1 - 2 2 - 8 3 - 7 If the nranswers is 5, the result should look like this: 1 - 3 2 - 8 3 - 14 4 - 19 5 - 8 Please help me out with the query, atm he's not counting the answers that weren't chosen, only the ones that were chosen at least one time.

• Win32 API Programming - Is it worth ?

  Now I code win32 api windows explorer . But it seems quite hard to me.I've a month to do it. But through the time I code, I wonder is it worth that I code win32 api ? . When we can create GUI easily with MFC or even easier with C#. What should I do ? 1- Keep coding with win32 api to deeply understand about them. 2- Just learn and code some programs to understand how they work. Can you determine how many time does it take in each choice ( or how many projects ). Thx for reading, as a 2nd student of IT University I really want your advice in this. • Obey the MediaBox/CropBox in PDF when using ghostscript to render a PDF to a png

  I've been using ghostscript to convert my single figure plots rendered in PDF to png: gswin32c -sDEVICE=png16m -r300x300 -sOutputFile=junk.png -dBATCH -dNOPAUSE Figure_001-a.pdf This works in the sense I get a png out and it contians the plot. But it contains a huge amount of white space as well (an example source image: http://cdsweb.cern.ch/record/1258681/files/Figure_001-a.pdf). If you view it in Acrobat you'll note there is no white space around the plot. If you use the above command line you'll find the plot is only about 1/3 of the space. When doing the same thing with an eps file I run into the same problem. However, there is the command-line parameter -dEPSCrop that one can pass to get the PS rendering engine to pay attention to the BoundingBox. I need the similar argument for rendering PDF's. I was not able to find it in docs (nor even the EPSCrop, actually).

• How to optimize Dijkstra algorithm for a single shortest path between 2 nodes?

  Hi, I was trying to understand this implementation in C of the Dijkstra algorithm and at the same time modify it so that only the shortest path between 2 specific nodes (source and destination) is found. However, I don't know exactly what do to. The way I see it, there's nothing much to do, I can't seem to change d[] or prev[] cause those arrays aggregate some important data for the shortest path calculation. The only thing I can think of is stopping the algorithm when the path is found, that is, break the cycle when mini = destination when it's being marked as visited. Is there anything else I could do to make it better or is that enough? P.S: I just noticed that the for loops start at 1 until <=, why can't it start at 0 and go until <?

• Problems with testing in app purchases

  I am trying to test my application with in app purchases. I created features, test user, logged out from iTunes on the iPhone and used developer certificate. Load app from XCode in debug mode. When I click "Buy" button I pass all checks for internet availability, canMakePayments and call SKPayment *payment = [SKPayment paymentWithProductIdentifier:featureId]; [[SKPaymentQueue defaultQueue] addPayment:payment]; But all what I see is a pending view and after some minutes it failed in - (void) failedTransaction: (SKPaymentTransaction *)transaction { if (transaction.error.code != SKErrorPaymentCancelled) { NSLog(@"failedTransaction"); } [[MKStoreManager sharedManager] paymentCanceled]; [[SKPaymentQueue defaultQueue] finishTransaction: transaction]; } Please advice in what direction I should go to figure out the problem and what else I should check. P.S. All related questions on SO were checked with no luck.

• Allowing threads from python after calling a blocking i/o code in a python extension generated using

  I have written a python extension wrapping an existing C++ library live555 (wrapping RTSP client interface to be specific) in SWIG. The extension works when it is operated in a single thread, but as soon as I call the event loop function of the library, python interpreter never gets the control back. So if I create a scheduled task using threading.Timer right before calling the event loop, that task never gets executed once event loop starts. To fix this issue, I added Py_BEGIN_ALLOW_THREADS and Py_END_ALLOW_THREADS macros manually in the SWIG auto generated wrapper cxx file around every doEventLoop() function call. But now, I want to do the same (i.e. allow threads) when SWIG generates the code itself and not to change any code manually. Has anyone done something similar in SWIG? P.S. - I would also consider switching to any other framework (like SIP) to get this working. I selected SWIG over any other technology is because writing SWIG interface was really very easy and I just had to include the existing header files.

When I created a WPF application, i am seeing two guids in here. {60dc8134-eba5-43b8-bcc9-bb4bc16c2548};{FAE04EC0-301F-11D3-BF4B-00C04F79EFBC} Does these represent WPF and Windows type of applications? If I create my own project type (.myproj) that has .xaml and .cs files, what should I fill in this ProjectTypeGuids tags? Should I also need to fill the ProjectType tag? I have read a lot that springMVC framework is a good choice (never used though) My earlier experience with java is not much. only some small app development using Netbeans. so I have some experience using Netbeans. but I see that I can start a JEE project in Netbeans. so what kind of framework netbeans is using underneath. PS: My understanding of framework (e.g. SpringMVC) is that you follow rule of framework to configure your app. and then framework take care or linking your View, controller and model. so if i am using netbeans, do i need to take care of linking of my MVC by myself?

  I am trying to load Linq on my .Net 3.5 enabled web server by adding the following to my .aspx page: <%@ Import Namespace="System.Query" %> However, this fails and tells me it cannot find the namespace. The type or namespace name 'Query' does not exist in the namespace 'System' I have also tried with no luck: System.Data.Linq System.Linq System.Xml.Linq I believe that .Net 3.5 is working because var hello = "Hello World" seems to work. • How to: WCF XML-RPC client?

  I have built my own little custom XML-RPC server, and since I'd like to keep things simple, on both server and client side, what I would like to accomplish is to create a simplest possible client (in C# preferably) using WCF. Let's say that Contract for service exposed via XML-RPC is as follows: [ServiceContract] public interface IContract { [OperationContract(Action="Ping")] string Ping(); // server returns back string "Pong" [OperationContract(Action="Echo")] string Echo(string message); // server echoes back whatever message is } So, there are two example methods, one without any arguments, and another with simple string argument, both returning strings (just for sake of example). Service is exposed via http. Aaand, what's next? :) P.S. I have tried googling around for samples and similar, but all that I could come up with are some blog-related samples that use existing (and very big/numerous) classes, which implement appropriate IContract (or IBlogger) interfaces, so that most of what I am interested is hidden below several layers of abstraction...

  Hi guys, I'm using AdventureWorks 2008 R2 database and added the BusinessEntity and Person tables to my EDMX. Then I changed the model in which the Person table inherits from the BusinessEntity table. As you may know these two tables have ModifiedDate and rowguid columns so the Person class should not have these properties because it inherits them from the BusinessEntity class. My question is, how can I modify the model to support inheritance and optimistic concurrency on both Person and BusinessEntity classes/tables on ModifiedDate property/column. PS. It also get me an error message that I have asked here. Thanks

  I am a building a console Sudoku Solver where the main objective is raw speed. I now have a ManagerThread that starts WorkerThreads to compute the neibhbors of each cell. So one WorkerThread is started for each cell right now. How can I re-use an existing thread that has completed its work? The Thread Pool Pattern seems to be the solution, but I don't understand what to do to prevent the thread from dying once its job has been completed. ps : I do not expect to gain much performance for this particular task, just want to experiment how multi-threading works before applying it to the more complex parts of the code.   I want to execute a cmd line tool to process data. It does not need to be blocking. I want it to be low priority. So i wrote the below Process app = new Process(); app.StartInfo.FileName = @"bin\convert.exe"; app.StartInfo.Arguments = TheArgs; app.PriorityClass = ProcessPriorityClass.BelowNormal; app.Start(); However i get a System.InvalidOperationException with the msg "No process is associated with this object." Why? how do i properly launch this app in low priority? PS: Without the line app.PriorityClass = ProcessPriorityClass.BelowNormal; the app runs fine.

• GUI freezing after datagridviews have been updated using backgroundworkers

  I have made an application which runs three backgroundworkers simultaneously. It basically updates three datagridviews, which it is doing spot on. My problem is if I press maximizebox button or anywhere in any of the datagridview the program hangs for quite a long time. I am able to use the horizontal scroll but not vertical scrolls. I have tried Backgroundworker_runworkercompleted and it fires as required after threads have updated their respective datagridviews. Is it a normal behaviour or am i doing something wrong any suggestions would be helpful. P.S: I have run the whole program using step method and their is no infinite loop in the code.
