  • Right Language for the Job

    - by Manoj
    Using the right language for the job is the key - this is the comment I read in SO and I also belive thats the right thing to do. Because of this we ended up using different languages for different parts of the project - like perl, VBA(Excel Macros), C# etc. We have three to four languages currently in use inside the project. Using the right language for the job has made it immensly more easy to do automate a job, but of late people are complaining that any new person who has to take over the project will have to learn so many different languages to get started. Also it is difficult to find such kind of person. Please note that this is a one to two person working on the project maximum at a given point of time. I would like to know if the method we are following is right or should we converge to single language and try to use it across all the job even though another language might be better suited for it. Your experenece related to this would also help. Languages used and their purpose: Perl - Processing large text file(log files) C# with Silverlight for web based reporting. LabVIEW for automation Excel macros for processing data in excel sheets, generating graphs and exporting to powerpoint.

  • Email server; Is this method spam-safe?

    - by Camran
    I have a classifieds website, and on each classified there is a tip-form where users may tip a friend about the classified. The tip-forms' action is set to a php-page, which mails the email after sanitizing etc... I have to filter away spam etc so that my email-server don't get blacklisted or anything... I have my own server (VPS, Linux) and have thought about a solution... How does this sound to you: 1- Install a mail-server 2- Configure Firewall to ONLY allow connections to the mail-server from my website 3- Configure the mail-server so that a maximum of 'x' emails may be sent every 5 minutes or so 4- Create a php filter before sending the mail, which checks for 'bad' words. 5- If necessary, as last resort, ask the user a question (ex 5+5) before submitting form I would rather preferr if I didn't have to implement the 5th implementation above... What do you think? Also, another q I have that you may answer is: If an email-server gets blacklisted, is there any way to un-blacklist it? Or whats the solution if this happens? Thanks

  • Limiting Row Selection in JTable

    - by Pat
    Is there an easy way to limit the total selection of rows in a JTable? I mean I'd like to allow the user to use shift and ctrl to select a maximum of X rows. If he clicks again on a row it would cancel out all the selections. Sort of how it currently behaves, but while limiting the total amount of selected rows. Here's my current implementation, I'm kind of clueless on how to limit the selection graphically. public class RoomsListView extends AbstractViewPanel { public RoomsListView(DefaultController controller) { this.controller = controller; initUI(); } private void initUI() { tableT = new JTable(RoomsModel.getInstance()); sorter = new TableRowSorter<RoomsModel>(RoomsModel.getInstance()); tableT.setRowSorter(sorter); tableT.setPreferredScrollableViewportSize(new Dimension(CUSTOM_TABLE_WIDTH, CUSTOM_TABLE_HEIGHT)); tableT.addMouseListener(new MouseAdapter() { public void mouseClicked(MouseEvent e) { rowClickedPerformed(e); } }); } private void rowClickedPerformed(MouseEvent e) { } public void modelPropertyChange(PropertyChangeEvent evt) { } public JTable getTable() { return tableT; } private final int CUSTOM_TABLE_WIDTH = -1; private final int CUSTOM_TABLE_HEIGHT = 150; private JTable tableT; private DefaultController controller; private TableRowSorter<RoomsModel> sorter; }

  • How to achieve to following C++ output formatting?

    - by Yan Cheng CHEOK
    I wish to print out double as the following rules : 1) No scietific notation 2) Maximum decimal point is 3 3) No trailing 0. For example : 0.01 formated to "0.01" 2.123411 formatted to "2.123" 2.11 formatted to "2.11" 2.1 formatted to "2.1" 0 formatted to "0" By using .precision(3) and std::fixed, I can only achieve rule 1) and rule 2), but not rule 3) 0.01 formated to "0.010" 2.123411 formatted to "2.123" 2.11 formatted to "2.110" 2.1 formatted to "2.100" 0 formatted to "0" Code example is as bellow : #include <iostream> int main() { std::cout.precision(3); std::cout << std::fixed << 0.01 << std::endl; std::cout << std::fixed << 2.123411 << std::endl; std::cout << std::fixed << 2.11 << std::endl; std::cout << std::fixed << 2.1 << std::endl; std::cout << std::fixed << 0 << std::endl; getchar(); } any idea?

  • Ordering z-indexes in an array

    - by Tom Gullen
    I have an array which looks something along the lines of resourceData[0][0] = "pic1.jpg"; resourceData[0][1] = 5; resourceData[1][0] = "pic2.jpg"; resourceData[1][1] = 2; resourceData[2][0] = "pic3.jpg"; resourceData[2][1] = 900; resourceData[3][0] = "pic4.jpg"; resourceData[3][1] = 1; The numeric represents the z-index of the image. Minimum z-index value is 1. Maximum (not really important) is 2000. I have all the rendering and setting z-indexes done fine. My question is, I want to have four functions: // Brings image to z front function bringToFront(resourceIndex) { // Set z-index to max + 1 resourceData[resourceIndex][1] = getBiggestZindex() + 1; // Change CSS property of image to bring to front $('#imgD' + resourceIndex).css("z-index", resourceData[resourceIndex][1]); } function bringUpOne(resourceIndex) { } function bringDownOne(resourceIndex) { } // Send to back z function sendToBack(resourceIndex) { } So given then index [3] (900 z): If we send it to the back, it will take the value 1, and [3] will have to go to 2, but that conflicts with [1] who has a 2 z-index so they need to go to three etc. Is there an easy programatical way of doing this because as soon as I start doing this it's going to get messy. It's important that the indexes of the array don't change. We can't sort the array unfortunately due to design. Update Thanks for answers, I'll post the functions here once they are written incase anyone comes across this in the future (note this code has zindex listed in [6]) // Send to back z function sendToBack(resourceIndex) { resourceData[resourceIndex][6] = 1; $('#imgD' + resourceIndex).css("z-index", 1); for (i = 0; i < resourceData.length; i++) { if (i != resourceIndex) { resourceData[i][6]++; $('#imgD' + i).css("z-index", resourceData[i][6]); } } }

  • Limiting object allocation over multiple threads

    - by John
    I have an application which retrieves and caches the results of a clients query. The client then requests different chunks of data and the application sends the relevant results and removes them from the cache. A new requirement for this application is that there needs to be a run-time configurable maximum number of results which may be cached. I've taken the naive approach and implemented this by using a counter under a lock which is incremented every time a result is cached and decremented whenever a result is removed from the cache. Unfortunately, this has drastically reduced the applications performance when processing a large number of concurrent requests. I have tried both a critical section lock and spin-lock; the performance improves a bit with a spin-lock, but is still unacceptably slow. Is there a better way to solve this problem which may improve performance? Right now I have a thread pool that services requests and each request is tied to a Request object which stores that cached results for that particular request. Here is a simplified pseudo code version of my current implementation: void ResultCallback( Result result, Request *request ) { lock totalResultsCached lock cachedLimit if( totalResultsCached + 1 > cachedLimit ) { unlock cachedLimit unlock totalResultsCached //cancel the request return; } ++totalResultsCached; unlock cachedLimit unlock totalResultsCached request.add(result) } void SendResults( int resultsToSend, Request *request ) { while ( resultsToSend > 0 ) { send(request.remove()) lock totalResultsCached --totalResultsCached unlock totalResultsCached --resultsToSend; } }

  • The type or namespace name 'WebControls' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?)

    - by user1467175
    I encountered this error: The type or namespace name 'WebControls' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) Source Error: Line 28: Login Login1 = (WebControls.Login)LoginView1.FindControl("Login1"); // here the error code Line 29: TextBox UserName = (TextBox)Login1.FindControl("UserName"); Line 30: TextBox FailureText = (TextBox)Login1.FindControl("FailureText"); I did some research and the solution was to add this into the source code: System.Web.UI.WebControls.Login but I have no idea where this code can be add into. At first I tried putting it as a namespace, but it was wrong. Anyone can tell me where should I place this code at?? EDIT protected void Login1_LoginError(object sender, System.EventArgs e) { //Login Login1 = (WebControls.Login).LoginView1.FindControl("Login1"); Login Login1 = (System.Web.UI.WebControls.Login)LoginView1.FindControl("Login1"); TextBox UserName = (TextBox)Login1.FindControl("UserName"); TextBox FailureText = (TextBox)Login1.FindControl("FailureText"); //There was a problem logging in the user //See if this user exists in the database MembershipUser userInfo = Membership.GetUser(UserName.Text); if (userInfo == null) { //The user entered an invalid username... • Javascript Regex: Testing string for intelligent query

    - by Shyam
    Hi, I have a string that holds user input. This string can contain various types of data, like: a six digit id a zipcode that contains out of 4 digits and two alphanumeric characters a name (characters only) As I am using this string to search through a database, the query type is determined on the type of search, which i want to handle serverside using JavaScript (yes, I am using JavaScript serverside). Searching on StackOverflow, brought me some interesting information, like the .test-method, which seems perfect for my needs. The test-method returns either true or false based on the evaluation on the string using a regex object. I am using this page as a reference: http://www.javascriptkit.com/jsref/regexp.shtml So I am trying to determine the zipcode, by using the following very noobish regex. var r = /[A-Za-z]{2,2}/ As far I can understand, this should limit the amount of occurrences of alphanumeric characters to a maximum of two. See beneath the output of my JavaScript console. > var r = /[A-Za-z]{2,2}/ > var x = "2233AL" > r.test(x) true > var x = "2233A" > r.test(x) false > var x = "2233ALL" > r.test(x) true /* i want this to be false */ > A little help would be really appreciated!

  • What is a truly empty std::vector in C++?

    - by RyanG
    I've got a two vectors in class A that contain other class objects B and C. I know exactly how many elements these vectors are supposed to hold at maximum. In the initializer list of class A's constructor, I initialize these vectors to their max sizes (constants). If I understand this correctly, I now have a vector of objects of class B that have been initialized using their default constructor. Right? When I wrote this code, I thought this was the only way to deal with things. However, I've since learned about std::vector.reserve() and I'd like to achieve something different. I'd like to allocate memory for these vectors to grow as large as possible because adding to them is controlled by user-input, so I don't want frequent resizings. However, I iterate through this vector many, many times per second and I only currently work on objects I've flagged as "active". To have to check a boolean member of class B/C on ever iteration is silly. I don't want these objects to even BE there for my iterators to see when I run through this list. Is reserving the max space ahead of time and using push_back to add a new object to the vector a solution to this?

  • SQL: Limit rows linked to each joined row

    - by SolidSnakeGTI
    Hello, I've certain situation that requires certain result set from MySQL query, let's see the current query first & then ask my question: SELECT thread.dateline AS tdateline, post.dateline AS pdateline, MIN(post.dateline) FROM thread AS thread LEFT JOIN post AS post ON(thread.threadid = post.threadid) LEFT JOIN forum AS forum ON(thread.forumid = forum.forumid) WHERE post.postid != thread.firstpostid AND thread.open = 1 AND thread.visible = 1 AND thread.replycount >= 1 AND post.visible = 1 AND (forum.options & 1) AND (forum.options & 2) AND (forum.options & 4) AND forum.forumid IN(1,2,3) GROUP BY post.threadid ORDER BY tdateline DESC, pdateline ASC As you can see, mainly I need to select dateline of threads from 'thread' table, in addition to dateline of the second post of each thread, that's all under the conditions you see in the WHERE CLAUSE. Since each thread has many posts, and I need only one result per thread, I've used GROUP BY CLAUSE for that purpose. This query will return only one post's dateline with it's related unique thread. My questions are: How to limit returned threads per each forum!? Suppose I need only 5 threads -as a maximum- to be returned for each forum declared in the WHERE CLAUSE 'forum.forumid IN(1,2,3)', how can this be achieved. Is there any recommendations for optimizing this query (of course after solving the first point)? Notes: I prefer not to use sub-queries, but if it's the only solution available I'll accept it. Double queries not recommended. I'm sure there's a smart solution for this situation. I'm using MySQL 4.1+, but if you know the answer for another engine, just share. Appreciated advice in advance :)

  • How can I have a Label change dynamically based on a Slider Value?

    - by duney
    I'm writing a grade calculator and I currently have a slider with a textbox beside it which displays the current value of the slider: <Slider Name="gradeSlider" Grid.Row="3" Grid.Column="2" VerticalAlignment="Center" Minimum="40" Maximum="100" IsSnapToTickEnabled="True" TickFrequency="5" TickPlacement="BottomRight"/> <TextBox Name="targetGrade" Grid.Row="3" Grid.Column="3" Width="30" Height="23" Text="{Binding ElementName=gradeSlider, Path=Value}" TextAlignment="Center"/> However I'm struggling to include a label which will show display a different grade classification based on the slider's value range. I'd have thought that I could create the label: <Label Name="gradeClass" Grid.Row="2" Grid.Column="2" HorizontalAlignment="Center" VerticalAlignment="Bottom"/> And then use code: string gradeText; if (gradeSlider.Value >= 40 && gradeSlider.Value < 50) { gradeText = "Pass"; gradeClass.Content = gradeText; } else if (gradeSlider.Value >= 50 && gradeSlider.Value < 60) { gradeText = "2:2"; gradeClass.Content = gradeText; } else { gradeText = "so on..."; gradeClass.Content = gradeText; } But the label just stays as "Pass" whatever the slider value. Could somebody please advise me as to where I'm going wrong? I tried using Content = "{Binding Source = gradeText}" on the Label xaml and removing the gradeClass.Content's in the code but it complained that gradeText was declared but never used. Many thanks to anyone who can help.

  • Processor, OS : 32bit, 64 bit

    - by Sandbox
    I am new to programming and come from a non-CS background (no formal degree). I mostly program winforms using C#. I am confused about 32 bit and 64 bit.... I mean, have heard about 32 bit OS, 32 bit processor and based on which a program can have maximum memory. How it affects the speed of a program. There are lot more questions which keep coming to mind. I tried to go through some Computer Organization and Architecture books. But, either I am too dumb to understand what is written in there or the writers assume that the reader has some CS background. Can someone explain me these things in a plain simple English or point me to something which does that. EDIT: I have read things like In 32-bit mode, they can access up to 4GB memory; in 64-bit mode, they can access much much more....I want to know WHY to all such things. BOUNTY: Answers below are really good....esp one by Martin. But, I am looking at a thorough explanation, but in plain simple English.

  • Weird send() problem (with Wireshark log)

    - by Meta
    I had another question about this issue, but I didn't ask properly, so here I go again! I'm sending a file by sending it in chunks. Right now, I'm playing around with different numbers for the size of that chunk, to see what size is the most efficient. When testing on the localhost, any chunk size seems to work fine. But when I tested it over the network, it seems like the maximum chunk size is 8191 bytes. If I try anything higher, the transfer becomes extremely, painfully, slow. To show what happens, here are the first 100 lines of Wireshark logs when I use a chunk size of 8191 bytes, and when I use a chunk size of 8192 bytes: (the sender is 192.168.0.102, and the receiver is 192.168.0.100) 8191: http://pastebin.com/E7jFFY4p 8192: http://pastebin.com/9P2rYa1p Notice how in the 8192 log, on line 33, the receiver takes a long time to ACK the data. This happens again on line 103 and line 132. I believe this delay is the root of the problem. Note that I have not modified the SO_SNDBUF option nor the TCP_NODELAY option. So my question is, why am I getting delayed ACKs when sending files in chunks of 8192 bytes, when everything works fine when using chunks of 8191 bytes? Edit: As an experiment, I tried to do the file transfer in the other direction (from 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.102), and surprisingly, any number worked! (Although numbers around 8000 seemed to perform the smoothest). So then the problem is with my computer! But I'm really not sure what to check for. Edit 2: Here is the pseudocode I use to send and receive data.

  • need help with some basic java.

    - by Racket
    Hi, I'm doing the first chapter exercises on my Java book and I have been stuck for a problem for a while now. I'll print the question, prompt/read a double value representing a monetary amount. Then determine the fewest number of each bill and coin needed to represent that amount, starting with the highest (assume that a ten dollar bill is the maximum size needed). For example, if the value entered is 47,63 (forty-seven dollars and sixty-three cents), and the program should print the equivalent amount as: 4 ten dollar bills 1 five dollar bills 2 one dollar bills 2 quarters 1 dimes 0 nickels 3 pennies" etc. I'm doing an example exactly as they said in order to get an idea, as you will see in the code. Nevertheless, I managed to print 4 dollars, and I can't figure out how to get "1 five dollar", only 7 dollars (see code). Please, don't do the whole code for me. I just need some advice in regards to what I said. Thank you. import java.util.Scanner; public class PP29 { public static void main (String[] args) { Scanner sc = new Scanner (System.in); int amount; double value; double test1; double quarter; System.out.println("Enter \"double\" value: "); value = sc.nextDouble(); amount = (int) value / 10; // 47,63 / 10 = 4. int amount2 = (int) value % 10; // 47 - 40 = 7 quarter = value * 100; // 47,63 * 100 = 4736 int sum = (int) quarter % 100; // 4763 / 100 => 4763-4700 = 63. System.out.println(amount); System.out.println(amount2); } }

  • Remove array elements that are less than X

    - by GGio
    I have arrays: $arr1 = array(5, 3, 9, 11, 6, 15); $arr2 = array(11, 20, 1, 3, 8); Now I need to loop through $arr1 and find the largest number that is less than X: foreach($arr1 as $x) { //need element that is MAX in $arr2 but is less than $x } so for example for the first run when $x = 5, maximum in $arr2 is 3 that is less than 5. Is it possible to do this without having nested loop? I do not want to loop through $arr2. I tried using array_filter but didnt really work. Maybe I used it wrong. This is what I tried with array_filter: $results = array(); foreach($arr1 as $x) { $max = max(array_filter($arr2, function ($x) { return $x < $y; })); $results[$x] = $max; } The result should be this: 5 => 3, 3 => 1, 9 => 8, 11 => 8, 6 => 3, 15 => 11

  • How do I select every 6th element from a list (using Linq)

    - by iDog
    Hi, I've got a list of 'double' values. I need to select every 6th record. It's a list of coordinates, where I need to get the minimum and maximum value of every 6th value. List of coordinates (sample): [2.1, 4.3, 1.0, 7.1, 10.6, 39.23, 0.5, ... ] with hundrets of coordinates. Result should look like: [x_min, y_min, z_min, x_max, y_max, z_max] with exactly 6 coordinates. Following code works, but it takes to long to iterate over all coordinates. I'd like to use Linq instead (maybe faster?) for (int i = 0; i < 6; i++) { List<double> coordinateRange = new List<double>(); for (int j = i; j < allCoordinates.Count(); j = j + 6) coordinateRange.Add(allCoordinates[j]); if (i < 3) boundingBox.Add(coordinateRange.Min()); else boundingBox.Add(coordinateRange.Max()); } Any suggestions? Many thanks! Greets!

  • Simulate Golf Game Strategy

    - by Mitchel Sellers
    I am working on what at best could be considered a "primitive" golf game, where after a certain bit of randomness is introduced I need to play out a hole of golf. The hole is static and I am not concerned about the UI aspect as I just have to draw a line on a graphic of the hole after the ball has been hit showing where it traveled. I'm looking for input on thoughts of how to manage the "logic" side of the puzzle, below are some of my thoughts on the matter, input, suggestions, or references are greatly appreciated. Map out the hole into an array with a specific amount of precision, noting the type of surface: out of bounds, fairway, rough, green, sand, water, and most important the hole. Map out "regions" and if the ball is contained inside one of these regions setup parameters for "maximum" angle of departure. (For example the first part of the hole the shot must be between certain angles Using the current placement of the ball, and the region contained in #2, define a routine to randomly select the shooting angle, and power then move the ball, adjust the trajectory and move again. I know this isn't the "most elegant" solution, but in reality, we are looking for a quick and dirty solution, as I just have to do this a few times, set it and forget it afterward. From a languages perspective I'll be using ASP.NET and C# to get this done.

  • Rails Form Submission, User can't be blank

    I'm trying to create an event through an event form and I keep getting a form error that says "User can't be blank". The event needs a user_id to post a feed_item showing who created the event. Why can't this event get created? event.rb class Event < ActiveRecord::Base attr_accessible :description, :location, :title, :category_id, :start_date, :start_time, :end_date, :end_time, :image belongs_to :user belongs_to :category has_many :rsvps has_many :users, through: :rsvps, dependent: :destroy mount_uploader :image, ImageUploader validates :title, presence: true, length: { maximum: 60 } validates :user_id, presence: true create_events.rb (database) class CreateEvents < ActiveRecord::Migration def change create_table :events do |t| t.string :title t.date :start_date t.time :start_time t.date :end_date t.time :end_time t.string :location t.string :description t.integer :category_id t.integer :user_id t.timestamps end add_index :events, [:user_id, :created_at] end end events_controller.rb def new @event = Event.new @user = current_user end def create @event = current_user.events.build(params[:event]) if @event.save flash[:success] = "Sesh created!" redirect_to root_url else @feed_items = [] render 'static_pages/home' end end routes.rb SampleApp::Application.routes.draw do resources :users do member do get :following, :followers, :events end end resources :events do member do get :members end end root to: 'static_pages#home' events/new.html.erb <%= form_for @event, :html => {:multipart => true} do |f| %> <%= render 'shared/error_messages', object: @event %>

  • subset complete or balance dataset in r

    - by SHRram
    I have a dataset that unequal number of repetition. I want to subset a data by removing those entries that are incomplete (i.e. replication less than maximum). Just small example: set.seed(123) mydt <- data.frame (name= rep ( c("A", "B", "C", "D", "E"), c(1,2,4,4, 3)), var1 = rnorm (14, 3,1), var2 = rnorm (14, 4,1)) mydt name var1 var2 1 A 2.439524 3.444159 2 B 2.769823 5.786913 3 B 4.558708 4.497850 4 C 3.070508 2.033383 5 C 3.129288 4.701356 6 C 4.715065 3.527209 7 C 3.460916 2.932176 8 D 1.734939 3.782025 9 D 2.313147 2.973996 10 D 2.554338 3.271109 11 D 4.224082 3.374961 12 E 3.359814 2.313307 13 E 3.400771 4.837787 14 E 3.110683 4.153373 summary(mydt) name var1 var2 A:1 Min. :1.735 Min. :2.033 B:2 1st Qu.:2.608 1st Qu.:3.048 C:4 Median :3.120 Median :3.486 D:4 Mean :3.203 Mean :3.688 E:3 3rd Qu.:3.446 3rd Qu.:4.412 Max. :4.715 Max. :5.787 I want to get rid of A, B, E from the data as they are incomplete. Thus expected output: name var1 var2 4 C 3.070508 2.033383 5 C 3.129288 4.701356 6 C 4.715065 3.527209 7 C 3.460916 2.932176 8 D 1.734939 3.782025 9 D 2.313147 2.973996 10 D 2.554338 3.271109 11 D 4.224082 3.374961 Please note the dataset is big, the following may not a option: mydt[mydt$name == "C",] mydt[mydt$name == "D", ]

  • MS Access PIVOT with User Defined Field

    - by user2535359
    Any of you good souls please help!! I need to query the source table shown in the below. (NULL are blank fields) UNUM, Ticket, Overflow 1 , 135 , NULL 1 , 136 ,NULL 1, 137, NULL 1, 138, NULL 1, NULL, 2b 2, 135, NULL 2, 136, NULL 2, 137, NULL 3, 135, NULL 3, 136, NULL 3, 137,NULL 3, 138, NULL 3, 139, NULL 3, 140, NULL 3, NULL, 66a 4, NULL, 12a 5, NULL, 14a I need to generate the output as shown below. UserNum, Ticket1, Ticket2, Ticket3, Ticket4, Ticket5, Ticket6, Ticket7, Ticket8, Ticket9, Overflow 1, 135, 136, 137, 138, Null, Null, Null, Null, Null, 2b 2, 135, 136, 137, Null, Null, Null, Null, Null, Null, Null 3, 135, 136, 137, 138, 139, 140, Null, Null, Null, 66a 4, Null, Null, Null, Null, Null, Null, Null, Null, Null, 12a 5, Null, Null, Null, Null, Null, Null, Null, Null, Null, 14a The source table has multiple tickets assigned to user. There are always maximum of 9 tickets. The user either has a ticket or an overflow but here can be only overflow per user. I am having issue pivoting the data in Ticket column to pre-defined field names like Ticket1, Ticket2...

  • Define a positive number to be isolated if none of the digits in its square are in its cube [closed]

    - by proglaxmi
    Define a positive number to be isolated if none of the digits in its square are in its cube. For example 163 is n isolated number because 69*69 = 26569 and 69*69*69 = 4330747 and the square does not contain any of the digits 0, 3, 4 and 7 which are the digits used in the cube. On the other hand 162 is not an isolated number because 162*162=26244 and 162*162*162 = 4251528 and the digits 2 and 4 which appear in the square are also in the cube. Write a function named isIsolated that returns 1 if its argument is an isolated number, it returns 0 if its not an isolated number and it returns -1 if it cannot determine whether it is isolated or not (see the note below). The function signature is: int isIsolated(long n) Note that the type of the input parameter is long. The maximum positive number that can be represented as a long is 63 bits long. This allows us to test numbers up to 2,097,151 because the cube of 2,097,151 can be represented as a long. However, the cube of 2,097,152 requires more than 63 bits to represent it and hence cannot be computed without extra effort. Therefore, your function should test if n is larger than 2,097,151 and return -1 if it is. If n is less than 1 your function should also return -1. Hint: n % 10 is the rightmost digit of n, n = n/10 shifts the digits of n one place to the right. The first 10 isolated numbers are N n*n n*n*n 2 4 8 3 9 27 8 64 512 9 81 729 14 196 2744 24 576 13824 28 784 21952 34 1156 39304 58 3364 195112 63 3969 250047

  • highlighting data values in a sql result set

    - by potatoe
    I can think of a number of ways to do this in PHP or even JavaScript, but I'm wondering if there's a SQL-based technique I'm overlooking. I have a database table, let's say 20 fields X 10 rows. I want to display the entire table on an web page, so I'd do something like SELCT * FROM data_table;, and then format the result set using HTML table tags. However, I'd also like to highlight values in the table based on whether they are the maximum or minimum value in their column. For example, I'd add bold tags around the max in each column. A resulting table might look something like this, with bold tags shown: id | field1 | field2 | field3 | ... 0 | 5 | 2 | <b>7</b> | ... 1 | 3 | <b>8</b> | 6 | ... 2 | <b>9</b> | 5 | 1 | ... ... I could do a separate SELECT with an ORDER BY for each field and then interpret the results, but that seems like a lot of extra DB access. My alternative right now is to just fetch the whole table, and then sort/search for the highlight values using PHP. Is there a better way?
