• Another JavaOne Latin America around the corner

  For the second year in a row, JavaOne is traveling to Latin America : São Paulo on December 6-8, 2011 at the Transamerica Expo Center. As with any such event, participants will be able to attend the Strategy, Technical and Community Keynotes, a large number of Sessions (including Hands-On Labs) which include a good number of local speakers chosen with a dedicated Call for Papers, and wander around the Exhibition Hall. Both Java EE 6 and GlassFish will be well represented in keynotes, sessions and hands-on labs. You can follow updates to this upcoming conference on Twitter and of course Register! New this year is the "Meet your Java gurus" geek bike ride that Fabiane and friends are organizing São Paulo on the Sunday prior to the conference. Sounds like fun!

• I see files in filezilla, but the internet denies their existance

  I am doing some updates to a 10-year old site, and I am baffled. Everything worked great locally, so I uploaded a bunch of stuff to the server using filezilla. Within filezilla I can see all of the files, but for some reason I get a 404 when trying to view them. It seems as though (at least for the folder Im currently checking) this is happening for items which are "farther down the list" alphabetically. I tried to re-upload a file individually but it didn't change anything. Is this an indication that I hit some sort of limit with the hosting company? And if so why can I still view the files from filezilla? Please offer guidance. I am at a loss.

• Ati Radeon HD 5850 + two screens with different resolutions

  How can I use these screens like I would use in Windows? When I turn off "copy" it gives me an error. I have tried community drivers and AMD drivers but both fail at this task. I use Ubuntu 12.04 with latest updates. It did not work in Ubuntu 11.10 either. I use DVI to connect my PC to my monitor and HDMi to my TV. It is a Sony Bravia, bought in 2008. I can't remember the model. Also, this same problem occurs when I connect to two Full HD monitors, both DVI. I cannot turn of the cloning of screens. How do I turn it off? Windows can do that.

• MODX based site has been compromised, and tagged by Google as malware

  I'm the webmaster (inherited the site from the developer) for a site called kenbrook.org. The site is currently being tagged as malware infected by Google, and gives the following details: http://www.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?site=kenbrook.org Sadly, this is the second time it has occurred. I posted the issue when it happened last year originally on Stackoverflow on this post, shortly after I inherited the site. At the time the fix was a simple removal of a few lines of code from a .js file, but I never did discover or resolve the vulnerability. The site is built on MODX, which neither I, nor the original builder, have any familiarity with. I've tried to check for security updates from MODX, but updating that software has been a real pain also. Sooo...what's my next step to getting this whole issue resolved? Or steps?

• Ubuntu 12.04 - Unable to change brightness

  So, as a number of users seem to be experiencing, I am unable to change brightness on my laptop. Using the Brightness and Lock in settings, the slider moves but brightness does not adjust. The fn keys work for volume but not for brightness. I have updated my drivers and installed all updates, however the brightness is still at maximum. I have heard that opening sudo gedit /etc/x11/xorg.conf and entering Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1" can fix this, however when opening xorg.conf through Terminal I am greeted with a blank document... • building kernel headers (v3.4) breaks wifi (in Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS)

  I have dual-booted by Samsung Series 5 Chromebook into Ubuntu using Jay Lee's script/instructions, and then installed the ~500 updates that appear thereafter. Now, I am trying to build my kernel headers in an attempt to enable virtualization so that I can run VirtualBox (I have a VM image on a flashdrive). I followed the instructions here: https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!topic/chromebook-central/PPQFpC7mYzk mainly doing as olofj suggests in his answer, while also making sure to abide by additions/edits made by panZ and algp. However, now that I have done so, my wifi has stopped working, and when I click on the network icon in the top bar, in place of wifi networks there is a grayed-out message that says "no network devices available". I have an Atheros AR9300 Ethernet card (I think thats what you call it). Any help is much needed and appreciated. Any further details necessary to answer the question will be provided as necessary. • Help error in terminal

  Hi I just updated my ubuntu to the latest and on package manager it told me all my gnome packages were broken and i couldn't make any updates until i deleted the gnomes. i had no idea that would screw me. anyways i logged out now i cant login anymore. it flashes right back to the login screen. and it looks very downgraded. anywho, i have no idea how to fix it, ive been looking online for a while. and everytime i try to remove or add anything, upgrade. i get this error.errors were encountered while processing: E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) so confused

• Is there a better way to run ubuntu from usb disk

  I have an old laptop with a broken hard drive controller and am running the previous ubuntu from a usb. I installed this as per standard instructions by running some program that copied the live cd to the usb. This has had a few problems, it seems like it was just made for trying and not for everyday use. Ideally I would like to do a proper install to the usb disk instead of just running off the installer disk. Is there a way to do this? The main problems I have are: When adding mounts to fstab it gets overwritten on each reboot When installing updates the kernel cannot be updated

• Visiting China

  This summer I had the chance to visit China.  My brother and his wife are living in China and teaching English.  I spent a little over two weeks in Shanghai, Suzhou and Yancheng.  During that time I wrote some detailed updates for family and a few close friends on the impressions of a good Midwestern kid visiting the Middle Kingdom. • CAMeditor v1.9 &ndash; thoughts and reflections

  We recently published the latest iteration of the CAMeditor tool on Sourceforge.net including more enhancements to the NIEM capabilities. This release represented an incremental improvement over the prior version with mostly bug fixes and patches. We’re now working on the full v2.0 release which will feature substantial improvements and new features in practically all areas.  Most importantly we are improving the dictionary handling and providing the ability to visually design new exchange schema directly from dictionary sets of components. In addition we are doing some interim release work on 1.9.x with patches and enhancements particularly to support running on Ubuntu and non-Windows platforms. And we are also providing an Ant script based deployment for the CAMV validation engine so you can do unit testing of batches of templates and XML instance samples using command line scripts. More updates will be forthcoming as we make early release versions available for testing purposes.

• A little SQL tip for C# developers

  The other day at work I came across a handy little block of SQL code from Jeremiah Clark's blog. It's pretty simple logic but through the mind of a C# developer making some quick DB updates, seems to me that it's more likely to end up writing out the code in Solution 1 instead of Solution 2 below to solve the problem. Basically, I needed to check and see if a specific record existed in Table1. If it does exist, then update that record, otherwise insert a new record into Table1. Solution 1: IF EXISTS (SELECT * FROM Table1 WHERE Column1='SomeValue')     UPDATE Table1 SET (...) WHERE Column1='SomeValue' ELSE     INSERT INTO Table1 VALUES (...) Solution 2: UPDATE Table1 SET (...) WHERE Column1='SomeValue' IF @@ROWCOUNT=0     INSERT INTO Table1 VALUES (...)         As Jeremiah explains, they both accomplish the same thing but from a performance standpoint, Solution 2 is the better way to go (saved table/index scan).   The answer to this SO question has become stale: iOS version/device statistics - where can i find? because time currency wasn't part of that question, and iOS version updates have been release since this question was asked. Is there a web site or other publicly available source which keeps a current or frequently updated list of the percentages of iOS devices and OS versions in use, perhaps by continual monitoring of app analytics or web site logs or other means? And what device or OS information are iOS app analytics currently allowed to report, if any? (...assuming an appropriate privacy policy and adhering to such, of course.)

• Minecraft Fullscreen not working

  I upgraded to Quantal recently, and Minecraft seems to not want to run in fullscreen. When I go to fullscreen it, the screen will go black for a second, as if it was about to go fullscreen normally, but then it just restores back into its window. So far I have tried: using different JREs (I've tried openjdk 6 and 7, as well as oracle7). Oracle's jre wouldn't even run Minecraft (I just got a black screen after logging in) switching graphics drivers (tried nvidia-current, nvidia-current-updates, and xserver-xorg-video-nouveau) updating minecraft bin files updating lwjgl libraries separately from the lwjgl site None of this seemed to work at all. I am running Minecraft with the command java -Xmx1024M -Xms512M -cp minecraft.jar net.minecraft.LauncherFrame Graphics card is GeForce 9500 GS/PCIe/SSE2. Everything was working fine a few days ago when I was on 12.04.

• Login crash loop

  After about the second/third batch of updates on a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04, I end up getting stuck in an infinite login loop: I enter my password, screen goes black and shows me the end of the initialisation messages (including things like CUPS initialising), and then the greeter reappears. Kicker is, as I'm using gnome-shell, I just decided to uninstall LightDM, ubuntu-desktop and unity-greeter, using GDM as my manager, and the problem still happens in exactly the same manner. I'm lost even as to where to start looking - Xorg logs, LightDM logs (before I removed it), syslog and dmesg logs have held no unusual information at all. I have a TeX assignment due next week, and reinstalling Ubuntu every time I want to work on it is not going to work (nor is using TeX on Windows ;). Anything else I should try?

• Setting Up and Managing Local IPS Repositories

  My colleague, Albert White, has published a useful article detailing how to set up local IPS repositories for use within an enterprise: How to Create Multiple Internal Repositories for Oracle Solaris 11 This is useful as most servers will not be directly connected to the Internet and most customers will want to control which Oracle Solaris SRUs (Support Repository Updates) are "qualified" for deployment within their organization.  Setting up and managing Internal IPS (Image Packaging System) Repositories is the way to do this. The concept can naturally be extended and adapted.  For example, Albert talks about a "Development" Repo containing the latest Oracle Solaris 11 deliverables.  When qualifying a software level for deployment across the enterprise, a copy of a specific level could be taken, e.g. "GoldenImage2012Q3" or "SRU8.5", and once it passes testing, be used to deploy across the enterprise. I am looking for a step-by-step process to fix this, and as a newbie, I don't know how to use the command line.
