• 2-Bay External HDD Enclosure in JBOD mode fails to detect both drives (Linux & Windows)

  I recently purchased a couple of USB 3.0 External HDD Enclosures to use for storage and backup; the idea was to have one act as backup to the other, with 4 x 3TB drives in total. However, the second drive in each is not accessible in either Linux nor Windows, and I could not determine the reason. 1. Situation The two enclosures are slightly different (couldn't find them in stock at the same time) yet from many little details appear to be the same Chinese base design with a tweaked outer shell. The models are: Sharkoon 2-Bay RAID Box Fantec MR-35DU3 The drives are Seagate 3TB Barracuda ST33000651AS, firmware CC44, all identical. From reading manuals and online sources, I determined that JBOD would be the optimal setup for my needs -- addressing the two drives separately in each enclosure would be important, making it easy to swap drives and mix&match them if needed; all the other modes implied the controller doing a combination of the drives. The software used was Debian GNU/Linux - testing/wheezy - kernel 2.6.39-2 and Windows 7 Ultimate. 2. Description of the problem Now, here comes the problem: every time I connect either of the enclosures to a PC using the supplied cable (tried a different one as well), only the HDD in the top bay is readable, the one below is detected yet errors out in various ways. According to the manuals, it should not happen: in JBOD, the system should be able to "see" two separate drives upon connection. This happens with both enclosures and any combination of HDDs (i.e. if I swap them, the same thing happens), so the HDDs are good and I think so are the enclosures (two different companies making similar products that failed in an identical fashion would be very unlikely). The top HDD can be used fine every time, I actually tried a speed test from Linux and got about 150MiB/s reads, so all is working as it should; the one below refuses to work every time. So the failure is consistent. To make sure this was not some obscure Linux bug, I tried the same under Windows 7, and the system also only created one drive letter for a drive of 3TB size (so it was only seeing one instead of both). Placing an older, known good, 2TB drive in the top bay made that the one recognised, so we have the same issue under Windows as well. Log entries under Linux (tested here with a 3TB and a 2TB drive so I could differentiate them; either one works in the top enclosure, in the test setup the 3TB one is on top). • Error in Bind9 named.conf file. Bind won't start.

• Is this Ubuntu One DBus signal connection code correct?

  This is my first time using DBus so I'm not entirely sure if I'm going about this the right way. I'm attempting to connect the the Ubuntu One DBus service and obtain login credentials for my app, however the slots I've connected to the DBus return signals detailed here never seem to be firing, despite a positive result being returned during the connection.   I'm trying to connect to a remote windows machine from linux command line, but I'm getting an error.   I've got a problem with a VIA C3 (1GHz)-system: the system freezes immediately when the CPU frequency goes under 731MHz because of an incompatibility with the (not completely implemented) i686 commands and a powersave feature of the kernel. There is a workaround: deactivate the "longhaul" kernelmodule via alias longhaul off in /etc/modprobe.d/aliases. But the system freezes before I can install any Linux distribution - even Clonezilla freezes. Is there a possibility to deactivate the module with a GRUB boot parameter before the kernel is loaded?

• Cannot run a VM with more than three network interfaces with KVM

  I'm running KVM on top of Ubuntu 10.10 Server I can create VM's (Virtual Machine) and network interfaces fine but I cannot seem to add more than three network interfaces. As soon as I have a VM with four network interfaces it gets stuck on startup at the starting SeaBIOS page with this message: Starting SeaBIOS (version pre-0.6.1-20100702_143500-palmer) So far I've verified this with two VM's, a Ubuntu 10.10 desktop and a Vyatta router. The specific network hardware I assign to the VM's doesn't seem to matter. I'm trying to have one bridged interface and three private networks using Vyatta to route between them. Does anyone know why I can't run a VM with more than three network interfaces? Edit: Additionally the KVM thread responsible for the specific VM hangs using ~100% CPU (i.e. one core).   Hi, I have two partitions on a hard drive in my machine that are formatted as ntfs, but must under no circumstance be mounted by my Ubuntu installation (unless I do some preparation first). However nautilus happily displays the partitions, and a single click will mount them automatically. This is very dangerous behaviour, how can I hide the partitions from nautilus and prevent accidentally mounting them by a single stray mouse click? Thanks

I know that they are very different, but almost everything I want to use this for wouldn't care about anything at the level of the kernel, so was hoping there would be a way to do this without using a VM.   This server is a Dell R200 running Ubuntu 8.04LTS using a LSI SAS1068E raid card supplied from Dell, I suspect that there might be some kind of RAID issue with the hardware raid built into the motherboard, but I can't seem to get MegaCLi to return any useful output: root@81 $ ./MegaCli -AdpAllInfo -aALL root@81 $ ./MegaCli -PDList -aALL root@81 $ The disks work and AFAIK the raid software is installed correctly. I've seen this issue on RedHat issues also in the past. The RAID was initially setup through the BIOS on this server and appears to be functioning fine apart from this.

  Hi, I know that constant switching time of the Linux scheduler was a big achievement. I was just asking myself the question what would be the implication of a non-constant switching time. The only obvious reason I can think of is real-time systems where we have to meet deadlines. There it is obviously no ideal if the switching time is "random".   I am having a bit of a strange issue. I have a VMWare ESXi server with two virtual machines running on it. They are running just fine and can communicate on the network without a problem. I am now trying to add a third. I am installing Ubuntu 8.04 Server. I assign it a static IP address and it's a fresh installation. Once installed I can ping the gateway but I cannot ping the DNS server. It's on the same network with the other two VMs which are communicating just fine. I have tried to reinstall the operating system but it still fails to connect. Here is /etc/network/interfaces auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.1.23 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 192.168.1.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255 gateway 192.168.1.1 dns-nameservers 208.67.222.222 #opendns dns-search mydomain.com Here is route Destination | Gateway | Genmask | Flags | Metric | Ref | Use | Iface localnet | * | 255.255.255.0 | U | 0 | 0 | 0 | eth0 default | 192.168.1.1 | 0.0.0.0 | UG | 100 | 0 | 0 | eth0 Since I'm running this behind a FortiGate this is what the sniff command gives me when I try to ping 208.67.222.222 arp who-has 192.168.1.1 tell 192.168.1.23 arp reply 192.168.1.1 is-at MAC 192.168.1.23 -> 208.67.222.222: icmp: echo request 192.168.1.23 -> 208.67.222.222: icmp: echo request 192.168.1.23 -> 208.67.222.222: icmp: echo request 192.168.1.23 -> 208.67.222.222: icmp: echo request 192.168.1.23 -> 208.67.222.222: icmp: echo request As you can see it looks like I never get a response. One interesting thing I notice is the arp reply's MAC doesn't look right. I have cleared the FortiGate's ARP cache though and checked the entry and it seems correct. The MAC it lists is the one for the router. • Changed login for a user with encrypted home, now I can't login

  I changed a user's login by doing this: $ usermod old_login -l new_login I also wanted to move his home to reflect his new username, but it wouldn't let me, so I just rebooted. But now after I login, the screen blinks and I'm redirected back to the login screen. And that's what happens when you cannot access your home, that's why I think it has something to do with his home being encrypted. How do I fix this? I'm on a Ubuntu 12 Virtualbox VM.

  looking to build a 10 node to eventually 50 node VDI solution. the only OS on the desktop will be ubuntu ( or some other linux ) looking for easy setup administration, and remote administration etc. will probably just use diskless PC as clients for now, but would want a solution that can accommodate thin-clients as well, and maybe there its just XDMCP from the server. must be completely open source ( no VMware ) thoughts ?

• netstat -ntap doesn't show pid/process name for some connections?

  I have ubuntu/hardy server, with kernel 2.6.24-23-server and netstat: # netstat --version net-tools 1.60 netstat 1.42 (2001-04-15) The problem is that we have a lot of ESTABLISHED connections that don't show PID nor Program name in netstat -ntap output. Netstat was called from root, there are no chroots, grsecurity, nor anything like this (or so I was told :). Any idea on what might be wrong? UPDATE lsof -n -i works ok, and shows pid/process name for the connections.

  I'm migrating from libpam-ldap to libpam-ldapd. I'm having some trouble gathering the secondary groups from LDAP.
