• PHP Programmer wanting to learn Spring

  I'm a PHP programmer and I want to try creating a webapp using the Spring framework. The problem is I'm clueless and I don't know where to start. What tutorials/books/websites do you guys suggest that I should learn from? What's IoC? Do I use it alongside MVC? What components of the Spring framework should I use? How do I know what to use? Are there webapps created with Spring that I could study from? Thank you so much in advance! P.S. I've used Struts (1) about a year ago.

• problem with closing sockets

  Hi, I'm trying to write a client/server program with threads. I close the socket once the connexion is finished. The servers gets plenty of new connexions, and the socket number (file descriptor) increases very quickly: after 5 minutes running I was already at around file descriptor number 800! Is this a normal thing? Do threads share file descriptors? When I do close(sockfd); is the number released immediatly or after a some time? PS: I used to do with fork(), and I didn't have this issue.   This is a simplified example - I have two threads: Can JavaME and/Proguard ever reorder the obX = ... statements, such that thread_B will have a null pointer exception at ob2.someMethod? thread_A: Object ob1 = null; Object ob2 = null; ... ob1 = something1; ob2 = something2; thread_B: if (ob2 != null) { ob1.someMethod(); ... } P.S. I do realise that synchronising these will avoid the issue. Synchronisation has both a performance overhead, and more importantly, a chance to introduce deadlock.

According to this blog post, the xsi:type attribute is special and can't be accessed by usal keywords/functions. How can I do it?   I am trying to upload multiple files into a SharePoint LIST as attachments. (can't use Document Libraries). I'm trying to use jquery to accomplish this but I'd appreciate any help or advise you may have concerning how best to upload to a list. For instance, can multi-uploads be accomplished when creating a new item? If you have code or examples/url's I can refer to I would welcome that. Cheers. • how do i claim a low-numbered port as non-root the "right way"

  I have a script that I want to run as a daemon listening on a low-numbered port (< 1024) Script is in python, though answers in perl are also acceptable. The script is being daemonized using start-stop-daemon in a startup script, which may complicate the answer What I really (think) don't want is to type ps -few and see this process running with a "root" on it's line. How do I do it? ( from my less-than-fully-educated-about-system-calls perspective, I can see 3 avenues, Run the script as root (no --user/--group/--chuid to start-stop-daemon), and have it de-escalate it's user after it claims the port Setuid root on the script (chmod u+s), and run the script as the running user, (via --user/--group/--chuid to start-stop-daemon, the startup script still has to be called as root), in the script, acquire root privileges, claim the port, and then revert back to normal user something else i'm unaware of )

  Long before you practice writing readable code, what "magic numbers" you still remember up to this day? here's some of my list: 72 80 75 77 13 32 27 - up down left right enter space escape 1 2 4 128 - blue green red blink 67h 33h 17h - interrupt for EMS, mouse, printer function AH 9, interrupt 21 alt+219 for block ASCII alt+164 ñ 90 NOP 13 10 carriage return, line feed ascii 1 and 2 face, ascii 3 heart. no not this heart: <3 :-) debug -o72,10 -o71,12 clears the BIOS password. I don't know what those numbers mean, it's like a trade secret that gets shared with each other during college days. ascii 7 sounds a beep P.S. Somehow, remembering some of these magic numbers can help you in some tech problems, your keyboard is broken, the office pal's keyboard doesn't have accented characters. An anecdote, during college, one of my friend asked me how to remove the newlines in his Word document. Not having used Word so much then, I somehow "intuitively" guessed to find ^013 and replace it with blank. Well it works :-)

• Any way to separate unit tests from integration tests in VS2008?

  I have a project full of tests, unit and integration alike. Integration tests require that a pretty large database be present, so it's difficult to make it a part of the build process simply because of the time that it takes to re-initialize the database. Is there a way to somehow separate unit tests from integration tests and have the build server just run the unit tests? I see that there is an Ordered Unit test in VS2008, which allows you to pick and choose tests, but I can't make it just execute alone, without all the others. Is there a trick that I am missing? Or perhaps I could adorn the unit tests with an attribute? What are some of the approaches people are using? P.S. I know I could use mocking for integration tests (just to make them go faster) but then it wouldn't be a true integration test.

• Named semaphores in Python?

  Hi, I have a script in python which uses a resource which can not be used by more than a certain amount of concurrent scripts running. Classically, this would be solved by a named semaphores but I can not find those in the documentation of the multiprocessing module or threading . Am I missing something or are named semaphores not implemented / exposed by Python? and more importantly, if the answer is no, what is the best way to emulate one? Thanks, Boaz PS. For reasons which are not so relevant to this question, I can not aggregate the task to a continuously running process/daemon or work with spawned processed - both of which, it seems, would have worked with the python API.

• Visual Studio 2008 - formatting/control characters/marks

  Hi, I don't know what I did but somehow the IDE has started displaying a green dot whenever I press spacebar and a green arrowhead whenever I press TAB. The source has become littered with these characters all over and I am finding it very difficult to code in the presence of so many formatting marks. I have tried to search a solution on Google but couldn't perhaps enter the right keywords so haven't been able to fix the behavior. Is there any way I can stop VS2008 IDE from littering my source code with these green dots and arrowheads whenever I press spacebar/tab? I would be really thankful for this help. • Unable to resolve user environment variable correctly

  I am trying to resolve %USERPROFILE% using WScript.Shell. When I create a vbs file and run directly from Windows, I get the correct path for the logged-in user C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator but it gets resolved to C:\Documents and Settings\Default User instead of logged-in user when I used it inside my classic ASP webapp running on the local machine on IIS.   Hi, I am doing some url redirections in a project that I am currently working on. I am new to web development and was wondering what the best practise was to remove any illegal path characters, such as ' ? etc. I'm hoping I don't have to resort to manually replacing each character with their encoded urls. I have tried UrlEncode and HTMLEncode, but UrlEncode doesn't cater for the ? and HTMLEncode doesn't cater for ' E.G. If I was to use the following: Dim name As String = "Dave's gone, why?" • How to close an oracle db connection from php on an apache server? I mean close instantly.

  Usually closing a connection is simply done by oci_clone($connection); or in a worse case when the php script ends the connection pass away. In my case however, I face a different behavior. If I access my application which uses PHP 5.2.8, Apache 2.2.11 and oci8 1.2.5, the connection is kept during several minutes. Actually it seems to: if I launch netstat -b I see that the process httpd.exe remains with the ESTABLISHED status on the database's URL during a while (a few minutes). Could someone enlighten me on that behavior? P.S. I do not use persistent connections.

  Hi All! i know this is not a properly code question, but who of you don't use an FTP client!? ;-) Ok my problem is that my FTP work great, exept when i upload files on a particular client server! on this server happen that some files are uploaded fine and others not, they stop while uploading at half of it's size, then this error is displayed: 530 Sorry, the maximum number of clients (4) from your host are already connected. Unable to make a connection. Please try again. Obviously this is not true, i'm the only one that is uploading! Anyone had the same experience with this!? • How to find out who's causing an access violation error?

  I'm getting reports that my app is causing a GPF on some Vista machines. The error message is something like this: access violation at 0x75784062 ( tried to write to 0x00000006) In order to fix this, I first need to know exactly who is causing this GPF: my main exe, some third party component, one of my own activex components, a dll, etc... How can I find this out? What tools can pinpoint the exact module that caused this mess? Any help would be greatly appreciated. PS My app is coded in VB6 and my activex controls are written in Delphi 2007.

  I have sorted list of strings that I move between php and java. to be able to bsearch on this data, I need the same comparison function. any idea what string compare functions I can use that will always give the same result in both? eg php's strcmp() vs java's String.compareTo() yes I know I could make my own string compare that does char by char carefully, but I was hoping there's a simple answer. PS, don't care if case sensitive or not, as long as it is consistant.
