  • Rationale in selecting Hash Key type

    Guys, I have a data structure which has 25 distinct keys (integer) and a value. I have a list of these objects (say 50000) and I intend to use a hash table to store/retrieve them. I am planning to take one of these approaches. Create a integer hash from these 25 integer keys and store it on a hash table. (Yeah! I have some means to handle collisions) Make a string concatenation on the individual keys and use it as a hash key for the hash table. For example, if the key values are 1,2,4,6,7 then the hash key would be "12467". Assuming that I have a total of 50000 records each with 25 distinct keys and a value, then will my second approach be a overkill when it comes to the cost of string comparisons it needs to do to retrieve and insert a record? Some more information! Each bucket in the hash table is a balanced binary tree. I am using the boost library's hash_combine method to create the hash from the 25 keys.

    In all examples I can find as well as the automatically generated code i Visual Studio, events are set using the following code: button1.Click += new System.EventHandler(this.button1_Click); But I can also write it visually cleaner by omitting the constructor wrapper: button1.Click += this.button1_Click; Which also compile fine. What is the difference between these two? And why is the first one mostly used/preferred?

These columns contain dates in the following format: mmddyy For example: 31/12/2010 00:00:00:0000 I need to import these values into a table which is set to varchar and numeric and formats dates like this: monthName varchar Year numeric(4,0) currently I'm using INSERT INTO [School].[dbo].[TeacherAttendenceDet] ([TeacherCode], [MonthName], [Year]) (SELECT MAX(employeecode), Datename(MONTH, dateofjoining) AS MONTH, Datepart(YEAR, dateofjoining) AS DATE FROM employeedet GROUP BY dateofjoining) but datename() gives result in date format..     Consider this piece of code: private Queue Date=new Queue(); //other declarations public DateTime _Date { get { return (DateTime)Date.Peek();} set { Date.Enqueue(value); } } //other properties and stuff.... public void UpdatePosition(...) { //other code IFormatter formatter = new BinaryFormatter(); Stream Datestream = new MemoryStream(); formatter.Serialize(Datestream, Date); byte[] Datebin = new byte[2048]; Datestream.Read(Datebin,0,2048); //Debug-Bug Console.WriteLine(Convert.ToString(this._Date)); Console.WriteLine(BitConverter.ToString(Datebin, 0, 3)); //other code } The output of the first WriteLine is perfect. I.e to check if really the Queue is initialised or not. It is. The right variables are stored etc. (I inserted a value in that Queue, that part of the code is not shown.) But the second WriteLine is not giving the right expected answer: It serializes the entire Queue to 00-00-00.

    I am populating a "Dictionary" with the results of an sp call. The key is the field name and the value is whatever value the sp returns for the field. This is all well and good but I'd like developers to have a predefined list of keys to access this list, for safety and documentation reasons. What I'd like to do is have something like an enum as a key for the dictionary so developers can safely access the list, but still have the ability to access the dictionary with a string key value. I am hoping to have a list of string values that I can access with an enum key AND a string key. Please make sure any suggestions are simple to implement, this is not the kind of thing I'm willing to build a lot of overhead to implement.

  • How do you configure firefox to open an application without prompting the user?

    I've got a serverside app that send down a custom mime-type file "application/x-optibase". Firefox prompt user user to save or open the file and if the user clicks open the correct application launches so I believe I have mimeType.rdf configured correctly I've gone into about:config and set browser.helperApps.neverAsk.openFile to application/x-optibase and browser.helpApps.alwaysAsk.force to false According to the minimal documentation out there this should enable the application to automatically open when the user downloads the file but it doesn't seem to work. Any ideas? Thanks.

  • Why do Java and C# not have implicit conversions to boolean?

    Since I started Java it's been very aggravating for me that it doesn't support implicit conversions from numeric types to booleans, so you can't do things like: if (flags & 0x80) { ... } instead you have to go through this lunacy: if ((flags & 0x80) != 0) { ... } It's the same with null and objects. Every other C-like language I know including JavaScript allows it, so I thought Java was just moronic, but I've just discovered that C# is the same (at least for numbers, don't know about null/objects): http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/c8f5xwh7(VS.71).aspx Microsoft changed it on purpose from C++, so why? Clearly I'm missing something. Why change (what I thought was) the most natural thing in the world to make it longer to type? What on Earth is wrong with it?

    I feel like the answer to this question is really simple, but I really am having trouble finding it. So here goes: Suppose you have the following classes: class Base; class Child : public Base; class Displayer { public: Displayer(Base* element); Displayer(Child* element); } Additionally, I have a Base* object which might point to either an instance of the class Base or an instance of the class Child. Now I want to create a Displayer based on the element pointed to by object, however, I want to pick the right version of the constructor. As I currently have it, this would accomplish just that (I am being a bit fuzzy with my C++ here, but I think this the clearest way) object->createDisplayer(); virtual void Base::createDisplayer() { new Displayer(this); } virtual void Child::createDisplayer() { new Displayer(this); } This works, however, there is a problem with this: Base and Child are part of the application system, while Displayer is part of the GUI system. I want to build the GUI system independently of the Application system, so that it is easy to replace the GUI. This means that Base and Child should not know about Displayer. However, I do not know how I can achieve this without letting the Application classes know about the GUI. Am I missing something very obvious or am I trying something that is not possible?

    I have a database table that stores user comments: comments(id, user_id, created_at) I want to get from it the number of users that have commented for the first time in the past week. Here's what I have so far: SELECT COUNT(DISTINCT `user_id`) FROM `comments` WHERE `created_at` BETWEEN DATE_SUB(NOW(), INTERVAL 7 DAY) AND NOW() This would give the number of users that have commented, but it would not take into consideration whether these comments are first for these users.
