I am new to coding and would just like to know a bit more about frameworks. How does a framework help you code and what exactly is it? Such as Zend for php.
assume that i start coding an application from scratch, is the best way to create tables when using Doctrine, to manually create tables in mysql and then generate models from the tables, or is it the other way around, that is to create the models in php and then generate tables from models?
and if i already have a database, will the models created be optimal? cause i have heard some say that its best to create the database from scratch when using ORM, so that the relations are optimized for OOD.
share your thoughts!
I have some of the basic coding down for the program but I do need assistance with something. My goal is to have an alarm go off on multiple PC's in a network indicating that a certain task needs done. Anyone who receives this alarm may stop it, complete the task and log that they did that. What would be the best way to accomplish this in a network? But not every computer in the network will be running this program, just a few.
How can i write coding for following conversion :
No number:6 bytes, 12 digits, enough zeros in front, add 0's upfront if not sufficient. Cases as: "13799303193" Is expressed as expressed as:" 13 79 93 03 19 3F".Thank you.
What is more efficient - handling with case statements in sql or handling the same data using if statements in code. I'm asking because my colleague has a huge query that has many case statements. I advised her to take stress off of the DB by coding the case statements. I've found that it is more efficient...but why?
I'm hosting my own svn repository on ubuntu 8.04. Is there a way for svn to send emails to team members whenever a commit has happened?
If coding is required, the only language I'm able to use on a linux server is PHP. So I could write a php script to be triggered by svn.
Can anyone tell me how to hook up my php script to an svn commit? Or is there another way to do this?
I'd like to see what a website is sending when I submit a form.
Using Firebug I can see that it is regular POST form.
I'm interested in the coding of the form fields.
Thanks in advance!
In C#, I can write something like:
using (new MyDisposableClass().MethodA());
The semicolon causes a compiler warning to be shown which states possible mistaken empty statement. I haven't run the above code but won't the method still be called?
What uses is there of this type of coding convention? I saw another thread on here about this but I ask in case there areny differences now/therefore different replies.
Thanks
What are the advantages and differences between the below two coding styles...
public void HelloWorld () {
private string _hello;
public string Hello {
get
{
return _hello;
}
set
{
_hello = value;
}
}
}
or
public void HelloWorld () {
public string Hello { get; set; }
}
My preference is for short simple code, but interested to hear opinions as I see many developers who insist on the long route.
I’m coding an application with server resources in mind, so I don’t want to use too much so that this application scales in the future. I don’t mind writing my own queries. So, is ActiveRecord resource intensive for my application? Or does it not make a difference?
Thanks!
I'm putting in some effort to learn Python, and I am paying close attention to common coding standards. This may seem like a pointlessly nit-picky question, but I am trying to focus on best-practices as I learn, so I don't have to unlearn any 'bad' habits.
I see two common methods for initializing a dict:
a = {
'a': 'value',
'another': 'value',
}
b = dict(
a='value',
another='value',
)
Which is considered to be "more pythonic"? Which do you use? Why?
I have two tables registries and names. Consequently, I have two model classes. I'm coding a method in registries model and I need to fetch all names in the names table/model. How'd I do it?
Should a simple new Names() work? But, is it recommended?
I’m currently working on this theme : http://tf.ffffffive.com/fancy/
I just need a few pointers on how to get it working in IE6 and IE7 .
-The positioning is a bit off.
-If you guys have a helpful blog post of maybe give me a hand with some CSS coding I would really appreciate it.
Also the Javascript scrolling effect isn't working correctly due to the positioning. Any tips would be appreciated.
Thanks, Henry
Coding footer naively, if there's not enough content, then there will be empty space between footer and bottom of page. I would like to get rid of this and move footer to the bottom of the window.
On the other hand when there is more content, I want the content to push the footer down (so position: fixed; bottom: 0; won't do).
How do I achieve this?
Is there any truth to the rumor that Visual Studio 2010 will natively support PHP coding?
(http://www.codeplex.com/php4vs)
If not,what are the options?(except VS.php)
I have a bit of free time at work and was wondering, what are some hard applications to build but which are not big?
Hopefully nothing which requires specialist knowledge but something nonetheless hard and which will boost my coding/problem-solving skills.
Thanks
Just had a curious thought, but for general coding and programming, do you think it's best to work out all the logic yourself and start from a blank sheet or just take a code that has been written already(by you or someone else) and just change it to your liking? Assuming you have a programming background of like 1year+. (because as a beginner, it's best to learn from nothing)
I'm not saying copy+paste someone else's code and say it's yours.
I've been given a task to make a dynamic drop down which takes it's data[image and value id] from table. I am wondering if any of you came across this scenario or if any one can help me out in this I need help in concept and coding. Definitely any help is appreciated.
I see the example in jquery here is the link:
http://www.marghoobsuleman.com/jquery-image-dropdown
something like this but data is coming from table.
How do I get intellisense to pop up while I am coding? I know it pops up when I start typing a known type e.g.:
if I type NSS it will finish it for me NSString.
How do I get it to give me a bunch of options like in Visual Studio e.g.:
if I type NS I want to see what my options are like NSString, NSInteger etc?
And if I have not typed anything I still want a bunch of options like all the instance variables etc.
How do you call a specific target in all build.xml located in all subdirectories using wildcards (ie not hard coding the subdirectory names)? The below answer is hardcoded. Is there a way to do it without hardcode?
Similar to this question: Pass ant target to multiple build.xml files in subdirectories
Currently, I have a project, where I have to add some features on to it, but the coding hasn't maintained any standards and it is extremely tough to break it down into manageable and understandable parts, to get started. And there is no documentation, to help out?
How would you start such project, if you had to?
Hi all
I've started coding on a 30 inch monitor and am wondering if it's possible to move the minibuffer to the top of the screen in emacs? google searches aren't showing up anything.
Cheers

I just finished coding a complex job assignment application where a lot of the work was done using priority queues. When I deployed, however, I discovered the web server ran PHP 5.2.
Has there been an implementation for PHP<5.3 that can server as a drop-in replacement for SPLPriorityQueue?

I am learning php, trying to use the fopen() function.
The php file I am coding is in this directory /domains/xxxxx.com.au/public_html/phpfile.php
What path do I specify for the file to be opened, the example I am looking at is based on a server on a pc where this is the file path $filename = "c:/newfile.txt"; not an online server.
