• How to Upload Really Large Files to SkyDrive, Dropbox, or Email

  Do you need to upload a very large file to store online or email to a friend? Unfortunately, whether you’re emailing a file or using online storage sites like SkyDrive, there’s a limit on the size of files you can use. Here’s how to get around the limits. Skydrive only lets you add files up to 50 MB, and while the Dropbox desktop client lets you add really large files, the web interface has a 300 MB limit, so if you were on another PC and wanted to add giant files to your Dropbox, you’d need to split them. This same technique also works for any file sharing service—even if you were sending files through email. There’s two ways that you can get around the limits—first, by just compressing the files if you’re close to the limit, but the second and more interesting way is to split up the files into smaller chunks.   So I have some free time this winter break and want to build a simple 2d HTML5 canvas game engine. Mostly a physics engine that will dictate the way objects move and interact(collisions, etc). I made a basic game here: http://caidenhome.com/HTML%205/pong.html and would like to make more, and thought that this would be a good reason to make a simple framework for this stuff. Here are some questions: Does the scripting language have to be Javascript? What about Ruby? I will probably write it with jQuery because of the selecting powers, but I'm curious either way. Are there any great guides you guys know of? I want a fast guide that will help me bust out this engine sometime in the next 2 weeks, hopefully sooner. What are some good conventions I should be aware of? What's the best way to get sound? At the moment I'm using something like this: var audioElement = document.createElement('audio'); audioElement.setAttribute('src', 'paddle_col.wav'); audioElement.load(); I'm interested in making this engine lightweight and extremely efficient, I will do whatever it takes to get great speeds and processing power. I know this question is fairly vague, but I just need a push in the right direction. Thanks :)

• Using Cloud Formation provisioned security group with specific subnet

  Summary I'm attempting to create an AWS CloudFormation template which contains an instance for which I want to select a particular subnet. If I specify the subnet ID then I get the following error The parameter groupName cannot be used with the parameter subnet. From reading this thread it appears I need to provide security group IDs - not names. How can I create a security group in CloudFormation and then get its ID after the fact? Details The relevant part of the instance config is as follows "WebServerHost": { "Type" : "AWS::EC2::Instance", <..skipping metadata...> "Properties": { "ImageId" : { "ami-1234" }, "InstanceType" : { "Ref" : "WebServerInstanceType" }, "SecurityGroups" : [ {"Ref" : "WebServerSecurityGroup"} ], "SubnetId" : "subnet-abcdef123", and the security group looks as follows "WebServerSecurityGroup" : { "Type" : "AWS::EC2::SecurityGroup", "Properties" : { "GroupDescription" : "Enable HTTP and SSH", "SecurityGroupIngress" : [ {"IpProtocol" : "tcp", "FromPort" : "80", "ToPort" : "80", "CidrIp" : "0.0.0.0/0"}, {"IpProtocol" : "tcp", "FromPort" : "22", "ToPort" : "22", "CidrIp" : "0.0.0.0/0"} ] } }, How can I create and then get that security group's ID?

• T38modem manuals?

  Are there any T38modem users here? I'm trying to figure out how to call T38modem with SIP. I've got everything except the --route option for receiving. I know my own phone number, but I am not sure how to set it up. Currently, I have: --route "modem:0.*"="sip:<dn>@64.136.174.30" --route "modem:1.*=sip:[email protected]" I've also tried: --route "modem:*.*"="sip:<dn>@64.136.174.30" --route"sip:*@74.94.184.154"="modem:<dn>@127.0.0.1" what amI doing wrong? And where (other than t38modem --help) can I find some documentation on how to use it? thanks.

  According to Amazon the fail rate of EBS volumes is: As an example, volumes that operate with 20 GB or less of modified data since their most recent Amazon EBS snapshot can expect an annual failure rate (AFR) of between 0.1% – 0.5%, where failure refers to a complete loss of the volume http://aws.amazon.com/ebs/ However, I was curious to know the fail rate of EBS snapshots and private AMIs that a system admin would take. Since the EBS snapshots and AMIs are stored in Amazon s3, is it safe to assume that the likelihood you cannot rollback to a previous snapshot or AMI the same likelihood that a file gets lost in s3? Amazon S3’s standard storage is: ... Designed to provide 99.999999999% durability and 99.99% availability of objects over a given year. http://aws.amazon.com/s3/

• AWS EC2 can't execute user-data script

  I'm pretty new to AWS and EC2 but I want to run instances with a user script after it's booted from another instance. I have installed ec2 tools and ran the command as it's explained in various examples like here http://www.turnkeylinux.org/blog/ec2-userdata and Eric Hammond's tutorials. however when I actually use the command: "ec2-run-instances --key my-key --user-data-file myscript my-ami" it only runs the new instance but doesn't execute the script myscript contains: #!/bin/bash echo "hello" ~/output.txt I'm running ubuntu server 12.04 AMIs. the target AMIs are duplicates of the initiating instance. if I run curl http:// 169.254.169.254/latest/user-data the imported script is there.

  I am interested in working with Amazon Elastic Beantalk to deploy my new site. A few things that I need to know and can't get an answer to: 1) How can I maintain IIS settings of all deployed and future deployed machines? 2) If I can maintain, what happens if I change the settings on one server, will it automatically set it on other servers? 3) How can I backup the data. In other servers I usually make an AMI and deploy to a new server in case of a problem?

• Amazon EC2 Creating Tunnel with OpenVPN

  I have followed these instructions: http://aws.amazon.com/articles/0639686206802544 I can ping the VPN endpoints and I have the corresponding VPC CIDR pointing to the EC2 instance in the route table. Here is my config: port 1194 proto udp dev tun # Remote peer and network remote Elastic_IP route 10.0.0.0/16 # Configure local and remote VPN endpoints ifconfig 169.254.255.1 169.254.255.2 # The pre-shared static key secret /etc/openvpn/ovpn.key keepalive 10 120 persist-key persist-tun log /var/log/openvpn.log verb 3 When I look at my logs, I get this error: RESOLVE: Cannot resolve host address: 10.0.0.0/16: Name or service not known OpenVPN ROUTE: failed to parse/resolve route for host/network: 10.0.0.0/16 in VPC1, the CIDR is 172.31.0.0/16 which is targeting the EC2 instance also running OpenVPN. I'm getting the same error from the Instance in VPC2 with the corresponding CIDR. Just for testing, i stopped the IPTABLES service I am running the Amazon linux AMI image (x64) as specified in the article I linked.
