• Varnish POST problem "9 FetchError c backend write error: 11" for application/x-www-form-urlencoded content

  Cutting a longish story short, we have managed to get a more precise error out of Varnishlog. Varnishlog tells us that we are sending a 31 TxRequest - POST 31 TxHeader - Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded but we are getting 9 FetchError c backend write error: 11 31 BackendClose - [backend name] 9 VCL_call c error 9 VCL_return c deliver 9 Length c 488 9 VCL_call c deliver 9 VCL_return c deliver 9 TxProtocol c HTTP/1.1 9 TxStatus c 503 We still do not know what this is exactly, but apparently Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded is not getting through as it should. Help still needed, please! Original message below. The title was "Varnish not letting Joomla users to log in - 503 guru meditation error", but I changed it to get more attention to the problem and not to the symptoms. Hello, We have a production site for a local newspaper which is currently behind an Apache reverse proxy, basicly the site on one server and the other being reserved as a reverse proxy only (well, there is more but that has no relevance here). Apache as a reverse proxy works, but could be faster. We want to change the reverse proxy to use Varnish instead of Apache on an Ubuntu 10.4 Server. The Varnish is version 2.10 installed directly from Ubuntu repos. Ubuntu 10.4 uses PHP 5.3.2. For anonymous surfers the site works wonderfully with Varnish. So far we can get very good speed out of Varnish, we just have a few problems with logging in or out. The big one is, that the users cannot log in: they get a Varnish 503 error page every time. The logs do not reveal the cause. It feels as if the request would never leave Varnish. So we are merely guessing - not a strong starting point. We have gone through what has been suggested on various plces on the web. We have increased the timeouts to backend xxx { .host = "xxx.xx"; .port = "http"; .connect_timeout = 60s; .first_byte_timeout = 60s; .between_bytes_timeout = 60s; } but we seem to get the 503 guru error page much faster than that, as in approx. 5 seconds. We have increased the Varnish headers size to 128 in daemon. In vcl_recv we have if (req.http.Authenticate || req.http.Authorization) { return(pass); } and in vcl_fetch ## auhtentication handling if (req.http.Authenticate || req.http.Authorization) { return(pass); } We do not strip cookies. We have tried to make sure that error pages are not cached. As said above, we cannot see anything in the backend Apache logs, apparently it never gets asked for Joomla user authentication. Varnish does not seem to get much mentioning with connection to Joomla. (We cannot dump Joomla, that selection has been done and we just have to live with what we have been given) Has anyone a working Varnish - Joomla combination? Thanks for reading. Please help.   Sometimes I just want to see an App description, and when I click on it, my browser goes to a page from Apple which immediately starts to screw up my machine. Reason: Heavy iTunes launches and eats up 95% of my system resources. Beach ball for minutes! And now I want to browse podcasts and it makes me so angry that I can't just have a normal browser. For example, inside iTunes I can't open things in a new window so that I don't get lost from where I came from. It's so limited and memory consuming. Maybe there's a way how to browse the iTunes store contents with a normal web browser?

  One well documented way to change a dynamically assigned ip address is to log into the router configuration settings and change the mac address , disconnect the router and modem, and to turn it all back on. This actually worked with a basic modem connected by ethernet directly to a laptop, spoofing laptop mac address, with a cable internet provider. Now this question is specific to fiber optic internet providers who bundle with tv and internet (verizon fios, comcast xfinity). Verizon fios installation comes with an actiontec router, and there is a built in way to clone the mac address in the router configuration settings. What will happen if the mac address changes from what verizon installed it as? Will they get angry and disconnect service? Will other services other than internet stop working (tv or phone)?

  Welcome, I trouble with my laptop fujitsu siemens model V6535. My siemens work under Windows 7, and from upgrade time (vista to 7) notice something what make me really angry. When my siemens go to standby mode (when i don't use it for some time), power diode change to red and start blinking (standbay mode). When i push power button (wake up it), blinking diode change to green but nothing else happend (nothing on display, no sound of HDD). When i press power button few second and try turn it on again... it wont display anything... i have unplug charger and then shutdown and power on again without power cable. Then he start working... Few days ago i done upgrade bios to nevest version... but it don't help... Anyone have idea what can be wrong ?

• How to manage preventive maintenance planning for external IT support?

  I am a bit puzzled by the way to handle server upgrade planning for software we maintain on remote sites. This is my case: I work for a software company that has many external clients. We are trying to be more Agile in our development so we plan to release small improvements every quarter and we wish to keep our clients informed of maintenance schedules. Instead of having angry clients that believe there ROI of our support plan is low, we want to be more proactive. Lets say we have 100 machines to take care of, is there some tool to assist me in planing the maintenance with clients? Right now I get a call from a client that is unhappy requesting we upgrade them, that is when we go into panic mode and start making calls. That is when I need to check my calendar, coordinate with the other guys, call a few times, change the date again and again until everyone is happy. Can this be done better?

• Win 7 Explorer backup and long paths

  I use Explorer to do backups because Win 7's backup program asks me to take backups previously done and to put them back in the drive. I am opposed to that idea since I believe backups should remain in storage. With Explorer backups (burn and burn to disc) I have encountered the "destination path too long" error message and it shows the name of a folder "Debug" three times. I have hundreds of folders named "Debug" thanks to Visual Studio. At this moment I'm too angry at Microsoft to write a program to determine my 3 longest paths. (Aside: This is all after coincidentally reading two articles about path junctions earlier this evening which already made me kind of unhappy.) Please, is there an easy way to continue to make backups with Explorer? Edit: I should add that renaming paths wrecks Visual Studio projects so I really need to isolate the small number of problem paths or find a cleaner solution.

  On a LAN, I want to find out the names of all the connected computers using a cross-platform program, preferably nmap. I know I can do nmap -sn xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/24 (where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is a local IP address) to find hosts which are up, but how do I find the computers' hostnames? Do they broadcast this in a way that I can find using nmap? UPDATE: It looks like Angry IP Scanner can do this. How does it do this? Can I replicate it with nmap?

• Is it possible for DNS to direct traffic to different ports?

  Right now I have a DNS CNAME record that makes ftp.angryoctopus.net an alias for the actual FTP URL domain, which is angryoctopus.net:65021 The goal is that a client should be able to type ftp://ftp.angryoctopus.net/ in their browser's address bar, and be directed to Angry Octopus's FTP site on my server - which is hosted at port 65021. Of course the hostname won't resolve. Is it possible to accomplish this type of alias somehow, or am I just beating a dead horse? This reminds me of DynDNS, which I used a few years ago for something-or-other. How does DynDNS spoof ports like that, and can I immitate it to make this work?

• Cannot SSH into Amazon EC2 instance

But could not fix it: suddenly (after a year of service, no changes on my winscp settings) it gives me "network error connection timed out" (im using ec2-user) (also from the amazon console). Log FILE: http://pastebin.com/vNq6YQvN All Sites that run on it run fine port 22 is allowed (never changed it) (security group) using the correct ec2-user and domain via my winscp / putty i can connect to other hosting (via ssh) update: SOLVED. I spend 2 days without looking at my own IP address .... (since it did not change the past 3 years....). Your comments made the spark in my brain. thank you so much. • How can I install a scanner by IP?

  I'm trying to install a scanner by IP the same way you would install a printer by IP. I don't want to install the horrible HP Solution Center software but I don't know how to install a network scanner without the software. I'm having a hard time googling this because when I search for things like "install network scanner" or "install scanner by IP" all the results are for things like Angry IP Scanner which is clearly different than what I'm trying to get. • Social Engineering approach to collecting from deadbeat ebay winners

  You just sold something on e-bay and now the winner won't pay up.  What do you do?  I'm not sure what the legality of this kind of Social Engineering hack is, but I believe you've got to give it points for elegance.   Here's the link to the lifehacker.com post (I can't find the original Reddit post.) Reddit user "BadgerMatt" (we'll call him Matt for short) recently posted a story about how he tried to sell tickets to a sporting event on eBay, but when the auction was won the winning bidder backed out of the deal. In some cases this is mainly an inconvenience and you can re-list the item, but Matt was selling tickets to a sporting event and no longer had the time to do that. With the losing bidders uninterested in the tickets, he was going to end up stuck with tickets he couldn't use and a deadbeat bidder who was unwilling to honor their contract. Rather than give up, Matt decided to trick her into paying: I created a new eBay account, "Payback" we'll call it, and sent her a message: "Hi there, I noticed you won an auction for 4 [sporting event] tickets. I meant to bid on these but couldn't get to a computer. I wanted to take my son and dad and would be willing to give you $1,000 for the tickets. I imagine that you've already made plans to attend, but I figured it was worth a shot." The woman agreed, but for $1,100. She paid for the auction, received the tickets, and then Matt (of course) never re-purchased them. Needless to say, the woman was angry. Perhaps it was the wrong thing for the right reasons, but I'm mostly jealous I never thought of it back when I still sold things on eBay.

• Watson Ties Against Human Jeopardy Opponents

  In January we showed you a video of Waton in a practice round against Jeopardy champions Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter. Last night they squared off in a real round of Jeopardy with Watson in a tie with Rutter. Watson held his own against the two champions leveraging the 90 IBM Power 750 servers, 2,880 processors, and the 16TB of memory driving him to his full advantage. It was impressive to watch the round unfold and to see where Watson shined and where he faltered. Check out the video below to footage of Watson in training and then in action on Jeopardy. Pay special attention to the things that trip him up. Watson answers cut and dry questions with absolute lighting speed but stumbles when it comes to nuances in language–like finis vs. terminus in the train question that Jennings answered correctly. • See the Lord of the Rings Epic from the Perspective of Mordor [eBook]

  Much like the wildly popular book “Wicked” mixed up the good/bad dichotomy in the Wizard of Oz, “The Last Ring-Bearer” shows us the Mordor’s take on the Lord of the Rings. The work of a Russian paleontologist, Kirill Yeskov, “The Last Ring-Bearer” frames the conflict in the Lord of the Rings from the perspective of the citizens of Mordor. Salon magazine offers this summary, as part of their larger review: In Yeskov’s retelling, the wizard Gandalf is a war-monger intent on crushing the scientific and technological initiative of Mordor and its southern allies because science “destroys the harmony of the world and dries up the souls of men!” He’s in cahoots with the elves, who aim to become “masters of the world,” and turn Middle-earth into a “bad copy” of their magical homeland across the sea.
