• Hard disk with bad clusters

  I have been trying to backup some files up to DVD recently, and the burn process failed saying the CRC check failed for certain files. I then tried to browse to these files in Windows explorer and my whole machine locks up and I have to reboot. I ran check disk without the '/F /R' arguments and it told me I had bad sectors. So I re-ran it with the arguments and check disk fails during the 'Chkdsk is verifying usn journal' stage with this error: Insufficient disk space to fix the usn journal $j data stream The hard disk is a 300GB Partition on a 400GB Disk, and there is 160GBs of free space on the partition. My os (Windows 7) is installed on the other partition and is running fine. Any idea how I fix this? or repair it enough to copy my files off it?

• osx split external hard drive partition

  Hi, I currently have a 640GB external HD that has 1 partition formatted as HSF+ Now I want to split some of the free space into a new FAT32 partition, without having to reformat the whole HD and losing all my data. I read that I'm supposed to be able to add new partitions in the Hard Disc Utility by clicking the "+" sign, without any loss of data. But in my case the "+" is not clickable and it says that this partition cannot be altered. Can anyone tell me how to proceed. Or is it impossible without reformatting the whole disc? Thanks ps: I'm running osx snow leopard 10.6.6

  I'm using windows 7 ultimate and it started to give me this hard disk problem warning that i had before in another OS that made me disable smart, it has been over a year since i did and my pc is running ok so my HDD is ok. all i wanna do is disable this warning that popsup while i'm gaming or doing anything else. thanks for your help :) Edit: (adding in info that was added as an answer instead of part of the question) So it's me again and i agree with both answers but i don't have the money right now to buy a new one, and yeah it could die now, i can't say. so i uploaded an image of hd tune pro scan on my HDD thanks again! anymore information would be even better, bye.

• Performance hit with new hard drive?

  I've recently upgraded my laptop's internal hard drive from a 160GB to 1TB drive. I cloned the drive, then installed it. The general system performance seems appreciably slower. In particular application launches seem to take much longer. Is this possible, or am I just expecting too much from the new drive? It's running a Macbook Pro which is a couple of years old. • Fix bad blocks on Mac hard disk

  I have a hard disk that I scanned with TechTool and it reports one bad block. As far as I can tell, TechTool only scans and reports a failure. It doesn't fix anything. Back in the day, Norton Disk Doctor did the job of scanning and flagging (remapping) bad blocks on the Mac. Today we have various tools for fixing up HFS+ directory errors (Disk Utility, fsck, DiskWarrior, TechTool), but I don't know of any tool that will do a surface scan and fix the bad blocks too. What software is available for this? If I know the address of the bad block, is there a low-level terminal utility for marking it?

• Hard Disk Space Changes

  I am currently running on Windows 7 x64, and have observe that my hard disk space is acting a little weird. Currently, my harddisk has 3 partitions, C:, D:, E:. Previously, before I delete a huge folder (30gb of data) from my D: drive, my C: drive has about 1gb left, while my E: drive has about 5 gb left. After deleting the 30gb of data (from D: drive), my space in D: drive has been recovered (but not sure if it's fully recovered), my C: drive which only had about 1gb left increased to 3. While my E: drive which had 5gb left dropped to 1. I was wondering if it has something to do with the fragmentations and whatsoever I always hear about in harddisk. Has anyone encountered similar issues or have an explanation to why it could be happening?

• Idle hard disk makes noise.

  Like a fan or something. I checked it. I stopped all fans (cpu, video, psu) and the noise was still there. I read online that it might be a motor or something. I have put a great deal of effort making my pc quiet. Installed a quiet psu and cpu fan, reduced the fan speed of my video card, bought a ssd... But my drive for data makes this noise. I would never have expected that. Do all hard disks make this kind of noise? I guess most people won't notice it because of the other fans they have in the system, I however can hear it quite clearly because all my other fans are almost silent. So should i get a new one or should i just live with it, considering that i might end up with a drive that also makes this noise.

• Windows - Delayed Write Failed error on USB hard drive

  I've got a new Verbatim 1.5TB USB hard drive (Samsung HD154UI) and I'm finding myself completely unable to fill it. I'm using Windows XP. Whenever I try to copy a load of files over, it works for some time (will copy over between 20 and 90GB) but eventually stops with an error saying "The specified path is too deep" - the specified is not too deep, there's nothing more than 2 dirs deep that I'm copying. A balloon pops up at the bottom saying "Windows - Delayed Write Failed" telling me the data could not be copied. This wouldn't be too bad if I could just restart the transfer, but after this error has happened I can't write anything else to the disk - including if I eject it and then connect it to another machine. It just seems completely locked. The only way I can unlock it is to delete everything that I was copying to it. I've tried various USB cables and copying from different machines, and the same thing keeps happening.

  Hya friends , Last night my computer was working fine. But today when i came back from college and started it , it was starting fine but after sometime it's getting restarted , again and again getting restarted at different points , so i tried to boot it in safe mode but same problem. Now after all this , i finally decided to format the drive C (it is in 80 GB) and load new OS windows XP3. After formatting (quick format) and loading xp3 sufficient files , when it was getting rebooted for copying the actual os files , it hung and a weird screen came. • Windows 7 won't show SATA Hard Drive in My Computer

  I have clean install of Windows 7 x64 with two SATA hard drives. When I open My Computer, I can see only the drive where Windows are installed (and all partitions), but I don't see the other one. When I go to disk manager, I can see that both drives are detected and the one that I don't see in My Computer is also marked as Primary, but when I right click, the Open and Browse are gray. I also checked drives with gparted on live Ubuntu and they both seem to work correctly, the second drive wasn't marked hidden or anything else. Before installing Windows 7, I had Windows XP, where both drives worked properly.

• How to use BT or emule across 2 or more hard drives?

  One difficulty with BT or emule is that, when the hard drive is full, we constantly need to move older files to a new hard drive so that we can download newer files. We can change BT or emule's setting so that the folder for downloading points to the new hard drive, but then, what if emule haven't finished downloading for some files that are hard to find, and it is 92% done... in that case, we would like to keep the old setting so that when the last 8% arrives, it can go into the correct file. (and same for BT, if we haven't finished some file or if we want to seed something later). So is there a good way to let BT or emule point to 2 hard drives, or somehow let the new hard drive "merge" into the existing hard drive / folder?

• Laptop stopped recognizing USB hard drive

  Hi, My Packard Bell EasyNote TX86 laptop stopped recognizing my 1 TB Toshiba Store Art hard drive. It worked fine until now, and it still works on other computers. Other USB devices (including storage) work, and I've tried plugging it in every port, to no avail. When I plug it in it spins up, but Windows doesn't react at all (it's not in disk management), Linux doesn't write anything in dmesg and I can't see it in BIOS setup. I didn't use it at all today, apart from plugging it into a freshly-installed Windows 7 machine once (where it worked). What can I do? Which device is to blame here? EDIT: One more thing. I unplugged the drive while the laptop was hibernated. Google says this might be the problem and it might have something to do with resetting the USB Host Controller.

• Reliable 1tb or larger hard drive?

  I am in the market for 2-3 new drives, I would like each to be at least 1tb to 2tb in size. I have been reading all the reviews on newegg.com for 1tb and larger drives and they all have 1 thing in common. Almost all the ones I read about have complaints of them being DOA or dieing within a few weeks of use. I am hoping to find some drives with this storage range that have a reputation for lasting a long time instead of a short life. Please help me if you have any experience with these sort of drives? Most the ones I read about were Western Digital brand. I realize some might complain that this questions answer would be based upon a timeframe, so if a user searches and find this answer a year from now it will be outdated but I would appreciate any help based on the current hard drives available as of April 10th, 2010 on newegg.com

  I have a 500 GB hard drive which I previously attached to my Mac. I detached the drive without going through the eject procedure. When I did this a message showed up, which of course I did not read. I could not use the drive until I formatted again. Now, when I attach the drive it says it is formatted NTFS and has 280.39 of 500 GB free. • Hard drive caught malware and all folders are in shortcuts

  I have an external hard drive from Seagate. I think it accidently caught a malware/virus, since all the files in there became shortcut folders. I have very important folders and now I cannot access them at all. I did not have an antivirus program; I just formatted the PC and forgot to install one. Just recently, I installed Avira and it caught the malware, but since I removed the malware via Avira, I can't access anything now. Please help me on what I need to do. I am really lost.

  I have a networked hard drive where I like to store audio/video/software and all sorts of other files for my house. While the software files are all intact and working, many of my video and audio files have been turned into folders! Can anyone explain why this is happening, how I can prevent it, and if it is possible to revert these "folders" back into files. Thanks much!   I plan to buy a 1.5TB hard drive soon. I would like to know which file system to choose from when I'm gonna format it. With FAT32, there is a limitation concerning the maximum file size (4GB) that bugs me since I might save large files such as DVD images which are over 4GB. On the other hand, NTFS allows me to save larger files, but seems less compatible with other OS than Windows and is also proprietary to Microsoft. Are there other alternatives ?   Scenario: Old hdd is a Seagate 320gb SATA drive New hdd is a WD 320gb SATA drive Created an exact clone and replaced old hdd with new hdd. Boot up with new hdd, it gets into Windows 2003 server environment but things look weird. Lots of system event failures in the event viewer log. System is barely unusable, critical services are all down. Boot up with old hdd, everything is fine. QUESTION: Is it possible to do a simple clone of a Windows 2003 server system? All I'm changing is the hard drive, everything else stays the same (old CPU/old mobo/etc..)

• Can a power loss break an hard disk?

  Today I was working when all of a sudden a power loss (in the entire house) occurs. I tried to reboot the machine but it states that there's an "Ebios error"; tried with an Ubuntu 9.04 live cd and while booting it states that there are various I/O errors on the first partition (the one with the boot sector). Now I managed to backup all of my data (using the live cd aforementioned) but I don't know if it'll worth the hassle of a reinstallation (and if it could do something useful) or if the only thing to do is to drop the hard disk as far as possible... • Tests for hard drive health

  I have a 5-year old hard drive (bought new at the time), but it was sitting in my closet for 5 years, unused. I have just started using it, and seems to be getting a whirring sound (rather distinct from the other noises like fans etc.). I ran a few diagnostics tests, like Seagate's SeaTools, and the SMART test, and a few generic tests and all passed. Should I be concerned? Is there any other test that I should run? It's an internal IDE WD 5400RPM drive. Being used for a desktop, which is itself pretty high-end (AMD Phenom II X6 1100T, AMD Radeon GPU etc.), but would be used rather occasionally to begin with (avg. 1-2 hrs. per day). Thanks for any pointers.
