• Can JSON be made easily and safely editable by the non-technical Excel crowd?

  I'm looking for a data storage format that's very intuitive and easy to edit. It should be ideally targeted towards the same crowd as Excel. At the same time I would like the data structure to be a tree. Ideally this would be JSON, since it offers both the tree aspect and allows for more interesting constructs like arrays. That and parsing libraries for JSON are ubiquitous, so I don't have to reinvent the wheel. The problem is that, at least with a non-specialized text editor, JSON is a giant pain to edit for a non-technical user. I'm thinking along the lines of someone who might have used Excel in the past, but never a real text editor. Someone who might not be comfortable with the idea of preserving JSON syntax by hand. Are there data formats out there that would fit this profile? I'd very much prefer this to be a JSON actually, but then it would require a solid editing tool that would hide the underlying implementation from the user. Think Excel and how it abstracts CSV syntax from the user. The reason I'm looking for something like this is because the team has been working with pretty hierarchical data for a while now and we've hit the limits of how easy it is to represent in simple CSVs without having to create complex rules for how represent hierarchy semantics from each row. Any suggestions?

• Simple dependency tree diagram generator

  I have a need to produce a simple dependency tree diagram. The input data would be in the following simple format: ITEM_NAME DEPENDENCY ---------------------------- ITEM_101 ITEM_75 ITEM_102 ITEM_77 ITEM_102 ITEM_61 ITEM_102 ITEM_11 This means that ITEM_101 depends on ITEM_75 and ITEM_102 depends on items ITEM_77, ITEM_61 and ITEM_11. So the diagram would have items ITEM_77, ITEM_61 and ITEM_11 in one vertical level and ITEM_102 would be below it with a line connecting each of the three dependencies to ITEM_102. The same would be for ITEM_101, ITEM_75 would be somewhere above it and there would be a line connecting it. In the real world this tree represents a hierarchy of scheduling jobs. We have a very extensive workload automation hierarchy in Autosys and I have heard that its front end utility has something like this tree visual representation, however, for some reason, that utility has been disabled by admins. My business users want to see this hierarchy in an easy-to-consume format. I was hoping that I won't have to program something like this from scratch because it seems like quite a common reporting requirement and the input data is simply formatted. My question is: is there a FOSS tool that takes standardized data input and produces such a hierarchical tree? Thanks

• TransformXml Task locks config file identified in Source attribute

  As background: the TransformXml MSBuild task is typically invoked in a custom build step to mark up a web.config file with per-environment configuration; its flexible directives offer highly granular control over the insertion, removal, substitution and transformation of existing configuration hierarchies. For those using the TransformXML task (typically in a Web Deployment Project) I raised an issue against Visual Studio 2010, in which the file handle on the input file was not released, meaning that following transformation the source file remained locked. As a result, the best way to transform a file was first to rename it, transform it, and then copy it back, leaving the "locked" file to be freed up later.I just heard today that this has now been resolved in Visual Studio 2012 RTM. That's good news, because Web Config Transformations offer a lot. An intelligent, automated build process will swap in the relevant transform(s), making it much easier to synthesise the Developer and Build server builds. This makes for a simpler and more exemplary build process, and with the tighter coupling comes a correspondingly quicker response to Developmental change.Oh, and don't forget -- it isn't just web.configs you can transform. You can transform app.configs, or indeed any XML file that honours the task's schema and hierarchical rules.

• Trouble with Collada bones

  I have a Collada file with a rigged mesh. I've read the node tags in the library_visual_scenes tag and extracted the matrix for each node and stored everything in a hierarchical bone structure. My Matrix container is "row major", so I'd store the first float of a matrix tag in the 1st row, 1st column, the second in the 1st row, 2nd column, etc. From what I gather this is the Bind Pose Matrix. After that I went through the tag and extracted the float array in the source tag of the skin tag of the controller for the mesh. I stored each matrix from this float array in their corresponding Bone as the Inverse Bind Matrix. I also extracted the bind-shape-matrix and stored it. Now I'd like to draw the skeleton with OpenGL to see if everything is working correctly before I go about skinning. I iterate once over my bones and multiply a bone's Bind Pose Matrix by it's parents and store that. After that I iterate again over the bones and multiply the result of the previous matrix multiplication by the Inverse Bind Matrix and then by the Bind Shape Matrix. The results look something like this: [0.2, 9.2, 5.8, 1.2 ] [4.6, -3.3, -0.2, -0.1 ] [-1.8, 0.2, -4.2, -3.9 ] [0, 0, 0, 1 ] I've had to go to various sources to get the little understanding of Collada I have and books about 3d transform matricies can get pretty intense. I've hit a brick wall and if you could please read through this and see if there is something I'm doing wrong, and how I'd go about getting an X,Y,Z to draw a point for each of these joints once I've calculated the final transform, I'd really appreciate it.

• Dynamic quadrees

  recently I come out writing Quadtree for creatures culling in Opendungeons game. Thing is those are moving points and bounding hierarchy will quickly get lost if the quadtree is not rebuild very often. I have several variants, first is to upgrade the leaf position , every time creature move is requested. ( note if I would need collision detection anyway, so this might be necessery anyway). Second would be making leafs enough large , that the creature would sure stay inside it's bounding box ( due to its speed limit). The partition of a plane in quadtree is always fixed ( modulo the hierarchical unions of some parts) . For creatures close to the center of the plane , there would be no way of keeping it but inside one big leaf, besides this brokes the invariant that each point can be put into any small area as desired. So on the second thought could I use several quadrees ? Each would have its "coordinate axis XY" somwhere shifted ? • Focusing and Selecting the Text in ASP.NET TextBox Controls

  When a browser displays the HTML sent from a web server it parses the received markup into a Document Object Model, or DOM, which models the markup as a hierarchical structure. Each element in the markup - the <form> element, <div> elements, <p> elements, <input> elements, and so on - are represented as a node in the DOM and can be programmatically accessed from client-side script. What's more, the nodes that make up the DOM have functions that can be called to perform certain behaviors; what functions are available depend on what type of element the node represents. One function common to most all node types is focus, which gives keyboard focus to the corresponding element. The focus function is commonly used in data entry forms, search pages, and login screens to put the user's keyboard cursor in a particular textbox when the web page loads so that the user can start typing in his search query or username without having to first click the textbox with his mouse. Another useful function is select, which is available for <input> and <textarea> elements and selects the contents of the textbox. • New functionality in TFS Build Manager &ndash; Managing Triggers and Build Resources

  Yesterday we pushed out a new release (August 2012) of the Community TFS Build Extension, including a new version of the Community TFS Build Manager (1.0.4.6) The two big new features in the Build Manager in this release are: Set Triggers It is now possible to select one or more build definitions and update the triggers for them in one simple operation: You’ll note that we have started collapsing the context menu a bit, the list of commands are getting long! When selecting the Trigger command, you’ll see a dialog where the options should be self-explanatory: The only thing missing here is the Scheduled trigger option, you’ll have to do that using Team Explorer for now.   Manage Build Resources The other feature is that it is now possible to view the build controllers and agents in your current collection and also perform some actions against them. The new functionality is available by select the Build Resources item in the drop down menu: Selecting this, you’ll see a (sort of) hierarchical view of the build controllers and their agents: In this view you can quickly see all the resources and their status. You can also view the build directory of each build agent and the tags that are associated with them. On the action menu, you can enable and disable both agents and controllers (several at a time), and you can also select to remove them. By selecting Manage, you’ll be presented with the standard Manage Controller dialog from Visual Studio where you can set the rest of the properties. Hopefully we’ll be able to implement most of the existing functionality so that we can remove that menu option Our plan is to add more functionality to this view, such as adding new agents/controllers, restarting build service hosts, maybe view diagnostic information such as disk space and error logs.   Hope you’ll find the new functionality useful.   Greetings, I am using jsTree to generatate my hierarchical data.   I am developing a Database File System. I am using - .Net framework 3.5 Entity Framework 3.5 WPF with MVVM pattern The project spans across multiple assemblies each using same model. One assembly,let's call it a "server", only adds data to the database using EF i.e. same model.Other assemblies (including the UI) both reads and writes the data.The changes made by server should immediately reflect in other assemblies. The database contains self referencing tables where each entity can have single OR no parent and (may be) some children. I want to use repository pattern which can also provide some mechanism to handle this hierarchical nature. I have already done reading on this on Code Project. It shares the same context(entities) everywhere. My question is - Should I share the same context everywhere? What are the advantages and disadvantages of doing that?

It shares the same context(entities) everywhere. My question is - Should I share the same context everywhere? What are the advantages and disadvantages of doing that?

  I am developing a Database File System. I am using - .Net framework 3.5 Entity Framework 3.5 WPF with MVVM pattern The project spans across multiple assemblies each using same model. One assembly,let's call it a "server", only adds data to the database using EF i.e. same model.Other assemblies (including the UI) both reads and writes the data.The changes made by server should immediately reflect in other assemblies. The database contains self referencing tables where each entity can have single OR no parent and (may be) some children. • Java: ArrayList bottleneck

  Hello, while profiling a java application that calculates hierarchical clustering of thousands of elements I realized that ArrayList.get occupies like half of the CPU needed in the clusterization part of the execution. The algorithm searches the two more similar elements (so it is O(n*(n+1)/2) ), here's the pseudo code: int currentMax = 0.0f for (int i = 0 to n) for (int j = i to n) get content i-th and j-th if their similarity > currentMax update currentMax merge the two clusters So effectively there are a lot of ArrayList.get involved. Is there a faster way? I though that since ArrayList should be a linear array of references it should be the quickest way and maybe I can't do anything since there are simple too many gets.. but maybe I'm wrong. I don't think using a HashMap could work since I need to get them all on every iteration and map.values() should be backed by an ArrayList anyway.. Otherwise should I try other collection libraries that are more optimized? Like google's one, or apache one.. Thanks

  Hi, Inspired by this post, I'm trying to use a TreeView inside the AutoCompleteBox's popup in order to show hierarchical data. Here's what i did: I Made my own TreeView that implements ISelectionAdapter (not sure it's perfect) Edit AutoCompleteBox template and change the selector to my treeview Try Bind my ViewModel to it Unfortunately this is not working. i checked my new TreeView with the same binding to the same object and it works prefectly when it's outside of a AutoCompleteBox template. Any idea? any special way to implement ISelectionAdapter for treeview? did i missed something? couldn't find any example for it on the web... Thanks.

  I want to use @PreAuthorize annotation on service methods with Spring Security. One of requirements is to use role-hierarchy. But by default it is not enabled. I found that in SecurityExpressionRoot class ("the base class for expression root objects") there is a property roleHierarchy. The class actually does use this property for methods like hasRole() and hasAnyRole(). I suppose that if I supply it with my own RoleHierarchy bean I will be able to use @PreAuthorize annotations with hierarchical roles. How can I inject my hierarchy bean into SecurityExpressionRoot?

• The subscription model behind CSS selectors?

  With CSS selectors a query string body > h1.span subscribes to a specific type of nodes in the tree. Does anyone know how this is done? Selectors for transformations, how does the browser select the result set? And is there a trick to making it efficient? I imagine there being some sort of hierarchical type-tree for the entire structure to which the nodes subscribe and which is what is used when doing the selector queries — but this is only a guess. Does anyone know the real answer? Or even more interesting, what would be the best way to do dynamic lookups on a tree based on jQuery/CSS search queries?

  How can I compute the z-score for matrices in Python? Suppose I have the array: a = array([[ 1, 2, 3], [ 30, 35, 36], [2000, 6000, 8000]]) and I want to compute the z-score for each row. The solution I came up with is: array([zs(item) for item in a]) where zs is in scipy.stats.stats. Is there a better built-in vectorized way to do this? Also, is it always good to z-score numbers before using hierarchical clustering with euclidean or seuclidean distance? Can anyone discuss the relative advantages/disadvantages? thanks.

  hi , i am designing a simple project based to do list. the idea is to define tasks under project ( no workflow - just "task is completed" or not is required. ) in a hirarchial way. i.e. each task has multiple task and that task may have other multiple task. a project can be said to be completed if all task under that project are completed. , i tought of using refrenceproeperty to create hirarchy , but could not figure out easy way ( which do not take more than 30 seconds to find all the children of a project and check weather it is completed or not ) . to detect if project is complete or not. how to design database for such job ? and also , if i need to copy the project in order to define another project , how to copy hierarchical data ?

• Integrating GSL onto iPhone Xcode

  I have been trying to integrate GSL (Gnu Scientific Library) into an iPhone project using Xcode. The challenge is GSL has all the modules in different folders, yet when their header files are reference, they often reference instead of or . At least with I could use Xcode's recursive header file search to find it. But with , basically file not found. Does anyone have an easy way to address the hierarchical GSL structure to compile into Xcode? I can do it the tedious way of fixing all the #INCLUDE lines but hoping there is a better alternative. This way, I can more easily update GSL when changes are made by the community. NOTE: I found Xcode needs to find the right header file locations (make sure to adjust your TARGET Build settings, not just your Project Build settings).

  What would be the easiest or recommended way for making an NSOutlineView indent multiple columns? By default, it only indents the outline column; and as far as I know there is no built-in support for making it indent other columns. I have an NSOutlineView which shows a comparison between two sets of hierarchical data. For visual appeal, if some item in the outline column is indented, I'd like to indent the item on the same row in another column by the same indentation amount. (There's also a third column which shows the result of comparing the two items, this column should never be indented.) Can this only be achieved by subclassing NSOutlineView? And what would need to be overridden in the subclass? Or is there an easier way to get it to indent multiple columns?

  I have created an organizational chart using ASP.NET on web page. The web page is using strict DOCTYPE and following W3C standards. The chart has a hierarchical layout decided by the manager field in the table that contains employees in the organization. The chart layout has nodes with employee image and other details like job title, department and contact details. Nodes are beautifully arranged and connected by lines (only horizontal or vertical or both). A lot of DIV elements are used (to avoid table) for connecting lines and arranging the chart properly. As suggested by my friend, using DIVs for connecting lines in the chart is semantically wrong. Is there a way by which I can make it semantically correct? Or, am I using HTML for the wrong purpose?
