  • IIS7.5 Domain Account Application Pool Identity for SQL Server Authentication

    In Windows Server 2003/IIS6 land we typically create an app pool that runs as the identity of an AD account created with minimal privileges simply for that purpose. This same domain user would also be granted access to SQL Server so that any ASP.NET application in that app pool would be able to connect to SQL Server with Integrated Security=SSPI. We are making a brave move to the world of Windows Server 2008 R2/IIS7.5 and are looking to replicate this model, but I am struggling with how to make the application pool in IIS7.5 run as the identity of an AD account? I know this sounds simple and hopefully it is, but my attempts so far have been fruitless. Should the application pool identity be a 'Custom account' for a domain account? Does the domain account need to be added to any groups?

  • Simple web-frontend for remote svn administration?

    We run a SVN repository. Some of our more advanced users need to be able to perform some SVN administration without relying on the system administrator. They need to be able to do things like create SVN repositories, delete SVN repositories,, and perform commands like 'svnadmin dump' and 'svnadmin load'. We'd like to avoid SSH access on these FreeBSD machines, and would rather provide a service interface through a Web UI. I'm looking for a simple script (or a small number of scripts) which use Perl or PHP. I found svnadmin or svnadmin.pl, but was hoping to find something with a larger user community or which has been recommended by others. It looks like Trac allows SVN administration, but comes with may more features then we need.

There are two servers: one database & print-server, and one backup & file server. Being relatively new to this side of things, knowing enough to help myself to some degree on Linux, I would like to know what software tools and tasks/habits I can use/acquire to learn this field and be effective while doings so. I don't need to know what is the best, just what a newbie sys-admin can use as a starter-pack to learn and use as a base to grow into proper system administration. [edit] What I need is those few basic tools to start with, and the kind of things I need to do regularly, e.g.: which logs to check, when & what to monitor, the kind of 'right' place to start and to which I can ad as I need.

    Hi all, I'm planning to create a simple web based interface that stores administration input in json format (for use later by an applicaiton running on the same host) example json output is here: http://www.json.org/example.html The content would be user contacts (email, name, phone number, photo etc..) There would need to be a conf file per logged in user. and an administrator user for viewing all config files in his group. I'm wondering what technology is best to create this framework.   • SSH multi-hop connections with netcat mode proxy

    Since OpenSSH 5.4 there is a new feature called natcat mode, which allows you to bind STDIN and STDOUT of local SSH client to a TCP port accessible through the remote SSH server. This mode is enabled by simply calling ssh -W [HOST]:[PORT] Theoretically this should be ideal for use in the ProxyCommand setting in per-host SSH configurations, which was previously often used with the nc (netcat) command. ProxyCommand allows you to configure a machine as proxy between you local machine and the target SSH server, for example if the target SSH server is hidden behind a firewall. The problem now is, that instead of working, it throws a cryptic error message in my face: Bad packet length 1397966893. Disconnecting: Packet corrupt Here is an excerpt from my ~/.ssh/config: Host * Protocol 2 ControlMaster auto ControlPath ~/.ssh/cm_socket/%r@%h:%p ControlPersist 4h Host proxy-host proxy-host.my-domain.tld HostName proxy-host.my-domain.tld ForwardAgent yes Host target-server target-server.my-domain.tld HostName target-server.my-domain.tld ProxyCommand ssh -W %h:%p proxy-host ForwardAgent yes As you can see here, I'm using the ControlMaster feature so I don't have to open more than one SSH connection per-host. The client machine I tested this with is an Ubuntu 11.10 (x86_64) and both proxy-host and target-server are Debian Wheezy Beta 3 (x86_64) machines. The error happens when I call ssh target-server.   • How to properly reserve identity values for usage in a database?

    We have some code in which we need to maintain our own identity (PK) column in SQL. We have a table in which we bulk insert data, but we add data to related tables before the bulk insert is done, thus we can not use an IDENTITY column and find out the value up front. The current code is selecting the MAX value of the field and incrementing it by 1. Although there is a highly unlikely chance that two instances of our application will be running at the same time, it is still not thread-safe (not to mention that it goes to the database everytime). I am using the ADO.net entity model. How would I go about 'reserving' a range of id's to use, and when that range runs out, grab a new block to use, and guarantee that the same range will not be used.

    Problems: One of my colleague is having a wired issue today with Search Service Application in SharePoint2010.After he created the Search Service Application, he could not browse to the Search Administration (http://ybbest:5555/searchadministration.aspx?appid=6508b5cc-e19a-4bdc-89b3-05d984999e3c) ,he got 404 page not found every time he browse to the page. Analysis After some basic trouble-shooting, it turns out we can browse to any other page in the search application ,e.g. Manage Content Sources(/_admin/search/listcontentsources.aspx) or Manage Crawl Rules(/_admin/search/managecrawlrules.aspx).After some more research , we think some of the web parts in the Search Administration page might cause the problem. Solution You need to activate a hidden feature using #Enable-SPFeature SearchAdminWebParts -url <central admin URL> Enable-SPFeature SearchAdminWebParts -url http://ybbest:5555 If the feature is already enabled, you need to disable the feature first and then enable it.     I'm building an Android app and associated set of web services for uploading/downloading data. I need a basic (no frills) solution for account management (register, login, logout, verify credentials/token). What open source / third party solutions exist for this scenario? I need: create a new account db based on a salt simple web service to create a new account simple web service to authenticate supplied credentials and return some sort of token That's it, I can get by without 'fancy' email activation or password reset for the time being. Are there off-the-shelf components for this? Should I just use a 'blank' django or rails app to get this done? Seems crazy for everyone to be doing CREATE TABLE user_accounts ... Thoughts? Thank you.

  • Identity in .NET 4.5&ndash;Part 3: (Breaking) changes

    I recently started porting a private build of Thinktecture.IdentityModel to .NET 4.5 and noticed a number of changes. The good news is that I can delete large parts of my library because many features are now in the box. Along the way I found some other nice additions. ClaimsIdentity now has methods to query the claims collection, e.g. HasClaim(), FindFirst(), FindAll(). ClaimsPrincipal has those methods as well. But they work across all contained identities. Nice! ClaimsPrincipal.Current retrieves the ClaimsPrincipal from Thread.CurrentPrincipal. Combined with the above changes, no casting necessary anymore. SecurityTokenHandler now has read and write methods that work directly with strings. This makes it much easier to deal with non-XML tokens like SWT or JWT. A new session security token handler that uses the ASP.NET machine key to protect the cookie. This makes it easier to get started in web farm scenarios. No need for a custom service host factory or the federation behavior anymore. WCF can be switched into “WIF mode” with the useIdentityConfiguration switch (odd name though). Tooling has become better and the new test STS makes it very easy to get started. On the other hand – and that was kind of expected – to bring claims into the core framework, there are also some breaking changes for WIF code. If you want to migrate (and I would recommend that), most changes to your code are mechanical. The following is a brain dump of the changes I encountered. Assembly Microsoft.IdentityModel is gone. The new functionality is now in mscorlib, System.IdentityModel(.Services) and System.ServiceModel. All the namespaces have changed as well. No IClaimsPrincipal and IClaimsIdentity anymore. Configuration section has been split into <system.identityModel /> and <system.identityModel.services />. WCF configuration story has changed as well. Claim.ClaimType is now Claim.Type. ClaimCollection is now IEnumerable<Claim>. IsSessionMode is now IsReferenceMode. Bootstrap token handling is different now. ClaimsPrincipalHttpModule is gone. This is not really needed anymore, apart from maybe claims transformation (see here). Various factory methods on ClaimsPrincipal are gone (e.g. ClaimsPrincipal.CreateFromIdentity()). SecurityTokenHandler.ValidateToken now returns a ReadOnlyCollection<ClaimsIdentity>. Some lower level helper classes are gone or internal now (e.g. KeyGenerator). The WCF WS-Trust bindings are gone. I think this is a pity. They were *really* useful when doing work with WSTrustChannelFactory. Since WIF is part of the Windows operating system and also supported in future versions of .NET, there is no urgent need to migrate to the 4.5 claims model. But obviously, going forward, at some point you want to make the move.

When manipulating Handler Mappings using the Microsoft.Web.Administration namespace, is there a way to remove the <remove name="handler name"> tag added at the site level. For example, I have a site which inherits all the handler mappings from the global handler mappings configuration. But, when I click on start, it says the following message: The Forefront Identity Manager Service service on WINSP02 started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs. Can anyone please help me in starting this windows service?

  • Choose identity from ssh-agent by file name

    Problem: I have some 20-30 ssh-agent identities. Most servers refuse authentication with Too many failed authentications, as SSH usually won't let me try 20 different keys to log in. At the moment, I am specifying the identity file for every host manually, using the IdentityFile and the IdentitiesOnly directive, so that SSH will only try one key file, which works. Unfortunately, this stops working as soon as the original keys aren't available anymore. ssh-add -l shows me the correct paths for every key file, and they match with the paths in .ssh/config, but it doesn't work. Apparently, SSH selects the indentity by public key signature and not by file name, which means that the original files have to be available so that SSH can extract the public key. There are two problems with this: it stops working as soon as I unplug the flash drive holding the keys it renders agent forwarding useless as the key files aren't available on the remote host Of course, I could extract the public keys from my identity files and store them on my computer, and on every remote computer I usually log into. This doesn't looks like a desirable solution, though. What I need is a possibility to select an identity from ssh-agent by file name, so that I can easily select the right key using .ssh/config or by passing -i /path/to/original/key, even on a remote host I SSH'd into. It would be even better if I could "nickname" the keys so that I don't even have to specify the full path.
