• Renaming the sa Account

  Today I renamed the sa account on 23 SQL Server 2005/2008 instances.  I used the CMS to assist with this task.  Later we realized all of the SQL Agent jobs were failing on these instances with the following error: “The job failed.  The owner (sa) of job XYZ does not have server access.” We use sa as the job owner, and it had correctly changed the owner to our new name as the sids had not changed.  We were at first confused why the jobs were failing but then realized restarting the SQL Agent service might help.  The restart corrected the problem. If you plan on renaming your sa account (best practice), make sure you restart the SQL Agent service afterwards to avoid failing jobs.  This is perhaps common knowledge, but it was something new learned by me today.

• Switch Hosts With Gmail Account Attached

  Hi, I am transferring a client from their old host to my new one. Their domain-based gmail/apps account was connected to their old host, so when I changed the domain's name servers to the new host, naturally the gmail account stopped working. So I added the 7 MX records tho the new host's DNS and verified I own the domain on the new host's FTP but the email still isn't working. Is there something I'm missing? I added the MX records to the new host about two hours ago, is it possible it just takes longer than that? Also, outgoing mail seems to work. Members of the domain can't receive email though, just sends back an error. Thanks, Wade

• How do I unlock a user account?

  I've been to system settings and to User Accounts. My account is the only one on the system and I have previously been able to UnLock the screen so that I could set my account to login without password prompt. That didn't make any effect on the system. I still have to enter a password to log in, but now I can't unlock the User Accounts dialog to make any changes at all. What do I need to reset? note how the unlock box in the upper right hand corner isn't available for selection...

  Sorry for the newbie question. I am using Powershell 3 to get a list of all user accounts. I am trying to generate an output for accounts, either "Enabled" or "Disabled". I am able to get the account status code from active directory using: $rc = $Rech.PropertiesToLoad.Add("userAccountControl"); That will display the correct account status code. When I try to use an if statement on the value, I dont get any result. How do I put this value into a variable to use some logic with it? In the end, my requirements are to have the output to an CSV file that I can send to HR and have them examin it and instead of a code I would like to have it say "Enabled" or "Disabled". Thank you.

• Cannot login to newly created user account

  Trying to switch accounts to my newly created account I get a black screen and then it takes me back to the main login screen after entering the correct password. Upon logging into my previously existing account I get: "System Program Problem Detected" Details: Executable path /usr/bin/Xorg Package: xserver-xorg-core 2:1.11.4-0ubuntu10.1 Details: Crash ... (tons more, but no way to copy paste or save) When I try to su su -l penner I get: No directory, logging in with HOME=/ I manually created the home directory and this error goes away but still no luck with the login. Seems something has gone wrong with the user creation? How can I correct this?

  I am trying to get auth token for a dropbox account configured in device from account manager. I am using accountManager.getAuthToken(account, "DROPBOX",null,Hello.this, new GetAuthTokenCallback(), null);//account" is dropbox account I am seeing a Allow/Deny page. I click on Allow, but the callback is not getting invoked at all and i dont get the auth token. I got the authtoken for a google account with this(with a different authtokentype). What i am missing. I am not sure about the authTokenType parameter for dropbox. Also are there any other parameter specific for dropbox like the bundle parameter that i am missing. Is this way possible for dropbox? For example my member John has access to a page name "Edit your account" where he can fill some fields and updates his info. Or another pages where John can manage his posts (edit, delete) Such pages have no interest to the other people so should be let google and others INDEX it or should we NOINDEX it ? Can I have the picture URL from the openid proccess? with OAuth I cant'seem to find the right scope to retrieve this information... I'd like to ask the question again after showing an interesting and new way to use the feature. • Implementing a modern web application with Web API on top of old services

  My company has many WCF services which may or may not be replaced in the near future. The old web application is written in WebForms and communicates straight with these services via SOAP and returns DataTables. Now I am designing a new modern web application in a modern style, an AngularJS client which communicates with an ASP.NET Web API via JSON. The Web API then communicates with the WCF services via SOAP. In the future I want to let the Web API handle all requests and go straight to the database, but because the business logic implemented in the WCF services is complicated it's going to take some time to rewrite and replace it. Now to the problem: I'm trying to make it easy in the near future to replace the WCF services with some other data storage, e.g. another endpoint, database or whatever. I also want to make it easy to unit test the business logic. That's why I have structured the Web API with a repository layer and a service layer. The repository layer has a straight communication with the data storage (WCF service, database, or whatever) and the service layer then uses the repository (Dependency Injection) to get the data. It doesn't care where it gets the data from. Later on I can be in control and structure the data returned from the data storage (DataTable to POCO) and be able to test the logic in the service layer with some mock repository (using Dependency Injection). Below is some code to explain where I'm going with this. But my question is, does this all make sense? Am I making this overly complicated and could this be simplified in any way possible? Does this simplicity make this too complicated to maintain? My main goal is to make it as easy as possible to switch to another data storage later on, e.g. an ORM and be able to test the logic in the service layer. And because the majority of the business logic is implemented in these WCF services (and they return DataTables), I want to be in control of the data and the structure returned to the client. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Update 20/08/14 I created a repository factory, so services would all share repositories. Now it's easy to mock a repository, add it to the factory and create a provider using that factory. Any advice is much appreciated. I want to know if I'm making things more complicated than they should be. So it looks like this: 1. • Old School Wizardry Tip: Batch File Comments

  Johnny, the Endangered Keyboard-Driven Windows User Some of my proudest, obscure Windows tricks are losing their relevance. I know I’m not alone. Keyboard shortcuts are going the way of the dodo. I used to induce fearful awe by slapping Ctrl+Shift+Esc in front of the lowly, pedestrian Windows users. No windows key on the keyboard? No problem: Ctrl+Esc. No menu key on the keyboard: Shift+F10. I am also firmly planted in the habit of closing windows with the Alt+Space menu (Alt+Space, C); and I harbor a brooding, slow=growing list of programs that fail to support this correctly (that means you, Paint.NET). Every time a new version of windows comes out, the support for some of these minor time-saving habits get pared out. Will I complain publicly? Nope, I know my old ways should be axed to conserve precious design energy. In fact, I disapprove of fierce un-intuitiveness for the sake of alleged productivity. Like vim, for example. If you approach a program after being away for 5 years, having to recall encyclopedic knowledge is a flaw. The RTFM disciples have lost. Anyway, some of the items in my arsenal of goofy time-saving tricks are still relevant today. I wanted to draw attention to one that’s stood the test of time. Remember Batch Files? Yes, it’s true, batch files are fading faster than the world of print. But they're not dead yet. I still run into some situations where I opt to use batch files. They are still relevant for build processes, or just various development workflow tools. Sure, there’s powershell, but there’s that stupid Set-ExecutionPolicy speed bump standing in your way; can you really spare the time to A) hunt down that setting on all machines affected and/or B) make futile efforts to convince your coworkers/boss that the hassle was worth it? When possible, I prefer the batch file wild card. And whenever I return to batch files, I end up researching some of the unintuitive aspects such as parameters, quote handling, and ERRORLEVEL. But I never have to remember to use “REM” for comment lines, because there’s a cleaner way to do them! Double Colon For Eye-Friendly Comments Here is a very simple batch file, with pretty much minimal content: @ECHO OFF SETLOCAL REM This is a comment ECHO This batch file doesn’t do much If you code on a daily basis, this may be more suitable to your eyes: @ECHO OFF SETLOCAL :: This is a comment ECHO This batch file doesn’t do much Works great! I imagine I find it preferable due to the similarity to comments in other situations: // or ;  or # I’ve often make visual pseudo-line breaks in my code, and this colon-based syntax works wonders: @ECHO OFF SETLOCAL :: Do stuff ECHO Doing Stuff :::::::::::::::::::::::::::: :: Do more stuff ECHO This batch file doesn’t do much Not only is it more readable, but there’s a slight performance benefit. The batch file engine sees this as an invalid line label and immediately reads the following line. Use that fact to your advantage if this trick leads you into heated nerd debate. Two Pitfalls to Avoid Be aware of that there are a couple situations where this hack will fail you. It most likely won’t be a problem unless you’re getting really sophisticated with your batch files. Pitfall #1: Inline comments @ECHO OFF SETLOCAL IF EXIST C:\SomeFile.txt GOTO END ::This will fail :END Unfortunately, this fails. You can only have whitespace to the left of your comments. Pitfall #2: Code Blocks @ECHO OFF SETLOCAL IF EXIST C:\SomeFile.txt (         :: This will fail         ECHO HELLO ) Code blocks, such as if statements and for loops, cannot contain these comments. This is ultimately due to the fact that entire code blocks are processed as a single line. I originally learned this from Rob van der Woude’s site. He goes into more depth about the behavior of the pitfalls as well, if you are interested in further details. I hope this trick earns you serious geek rep!

• Convert old AVI files to a modern format

  Hi, we have a collection of old home videos that were saved in AVI format a long time ago. I want to convert these files to a more modern format because the Totem Movie Player that comes with Ubuntu 10.4 seems to be the only program capable of playing them. The files seem to be encoded with a MJPEG codec, and playing them in VLC or Windows Media Player plays only the sound but there is no video. Avidemux was able to open the files, but the quality of the video is severely degraded: The video skips frames and is interlaced (it's not interlaced when playing it in Totem). Neither ffmpeg nor mencoder seems to be able to read the video stream. mencoder reports that it is using ffmpeg's codec. • os x 10.4 Old, deleted user mail account problems

  Hello- A while back I tried to add a user 'david' as a mail user on my OS X 10.4 server using dscl (I only had terminal access at the time, no ability to use workgroup manager). I could never get this account to work properly, so I deleted it. dscl . -list /Users no longer shows 'david' as an entry. I have since gained access via Workgroup Manager, and I am trying to re-create the 'david' account. Workgroup manager creates the account fine, along with an email account, which I can then log into via IMAP ('login david password' returns 'OK user logged in'). However, this mail account does not have an inbox, and I can not create one thru a mail client, IMAP or cyradm (they all say 'system I/O error'). When I re-delete this user, I can't find any record of him in any of the mail spool locations. Creating a user with any other name works fine (Inbox, mail access, everything). Any ideas on how I can get this user up and running again? -Chris P.S. - to create this user in the first place, I used dscl . create, then dscl . append /Users/david "some XML I found on the 'net" to add email privileges, if this helps...

• Completely remove user account and create another with same name in Windows 7

  Here's my question simply and then the details in case they help to get me an appropriate answer. Question: How can I completely and permanently delete a user account in Windows 7 so that I can create another one with the same user name without the computer name extension added, eg Jane Smith not Jane Smith.computer name? The details: I just did a clean install of Windows 7 Professional 32 bit. (My laptop crashed, I reinstalled Vista and restored backup files but things weren't working so I decided to just get Windows 7 since I had to start over anyway). I used Windows Easy Transfer to save just about everything, even customizing to include a user's appdata from Windows.old which was created when I reinstalled Vista -- not knowing that another windows.old file would be created with the installation of Windows 7. After installing Windows 7, I used Windows Easy Transfer to transfer the user file, appdata, to the new user account which I gave the same name (Jane Smith) in case having a different name would cause problems with reading files or something. Afterwards, I realized that I did not want ALL of that junk. So, I thought no problem, I'll just delete the user account I just created, nothing lost, and create another one this time transferring only the files I wanted (using the customize option in windows easy transfer). I wanted to keep the same user name, e.g. Jane Smith, so after I deleted the user account I checked the files, and I didn't see. It was late so I went to bed and the next morning I created a new user with that same name (Jane Smith). The files looked fine if I remember correctly. Meanwhile, I updated the computer and it restarted a couple times. As I was moving files to the "Jane Smith" user account file, things weren't working as they should. I was actually moving files to the deleted user account and that the current user account was named "Jane Smith.computer name" and that's where the files needed to go. I don't like this. It's too confusing. I want just "Jane Smith". How can I do this without just changing the user name (which doesn't change it in the file path etc)? I want the first one GONE. If I can't do this, is it a problem to create an account with another name and still transfer files to it without path or other problems? I hope this question makes sense and that someone can help me. Thank you in advance!

  I am replacing an old Linux file server serving NFS and CIFS. For the new server (still serving CIFS and NFS), I would like to have software that automatically and efficiently maintains old revisions of files in parallel trees, so that they can be accessed by users without special tools. I am looking for software that is akin to Time Machine or Flyback, but works well on a server. The dataset is some 10000 files weighing maybe 60 GB. Changes are relatively few, usually less than 100 files changes daily. Using LVM snapshots will not cut it, as the old revisions must reside on a separate set of disks from the live data. Edit: To clarify: keeping old revisions is non-vital addition to the solution, so any suggestion will have to stay in the range of some hundred euros.

• File Not Found error launching Guest OS in a non-administrator user account

  Hi, I am running Fusion 2.0.6 (196839) on an iMac running 10.6.2 with 3 user accounts (1 Administrator). I have Fusion set up to share the Guest OS, and it's been working splendidly for nearly a year. Within the Guest OS (Windows XP PRO), there are also 3 user accounts (1 Administrator). Last night I went to back up my VM to an external drive, and to minimize the file size and transfer time, I deleted all Snapshots but the most-recent one. I then backed up the VM externally (28.23 GB). Today, one of my users tried to launch the Guest OS from within her user account, and received the following error message: "File Not Found: Windows XP Pro-000006.vmdk "This file is required to power on this virtual machine. If this file was moved, please provide its new location." My two choices are Cancel and Browse. When I browse, I can locate the Windows XP Pro-000006.vmdk file, which appears to be contained within the VM file (Windows XP Pro.vmwarevm). However, it still won't launch from a non-Admin user account. If I view the package contents of the VM file from the user account, the above file is present and appears to be created upon each launch of the Guest OS. If I go back to my Administrator account on the Mac and then launch Fusion, the Guest OS works perfectly for all 3 user accounts within XP Pro. I have tried to delete the Guest OS from Fusion's Library within the problem user account, then re-connect it to that Library, but the result is the same. The Guest OS data integrity is 100% -- but is accessible only from the OS X Administrator account. This problem only surfaced after deleting several older Snapshots. Again, the data is there, the Guest OS powers up normally in the Mac's Administrator account, but persistently returns the above error when attempting to power on from a non-Admin account on the Mac. I'm not sure how this is affecting the error, but when I look at Hard Disk Settings, the "unable-to-locate" file is the filename of the virtual HD. I don't want to make any changes to my (working) VM without any advice from the knowledgeable people on this forum. Any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks!

  When I add an outlook.com account I get this error: Error Code: 0x80004005 Too many devices synching with your account I definitely do not have multiple devices synching with this account... I searched online and it looks like this error has something to do with number of folders in the email. However, this is a fresh account. I only have the default folders in there. Any idea how to fix this?

A domain user account was created with same username and password as my previous local administrator account. Now I unable to login using my local account. • How to migrate WinXP from failing old HD to new one

  Following this issue, we have all our important data backed up now. I also bought and installed a new replacement hard disk (WD 160GB PATA) as secondary (slave) drive. I created two primary NTFS partitions on it: a 40 GB system partition, and a 110GB data partition. In theory I could start reinstalling WinXP from scratch on the new system partition, then copying over all user data from the old drive to the new data partition. Once this is done, I could even throw away the old drive, or keep it just to see what happens. (Note: I don't want to clone the whole drive as it contains a dual boot setup with an old Linux installation which I don't need anymore, and anyway, a fresh reinstall would do WinXP good to get rid of many years' clutter.) However, I am lazy :-) The old HD is still functioning, the problem has not manifested again since. So I feel there is no need to hurry with a complete OS reinstall. What I don't know though is whether I will be able to install WinXP on the new system partition at a later stage without affecting the contents of the data partition on the same drive. If this is possible, I can just move over all our data to the new data partition to have it safe, then continue running WinXP from the old drive as long as it works. Does anyone see any problems/risks with this plan?
