• Is it possible to run two separate instances (copies, versions) of Audacity?

  What I want is two separate instances of Audacity running in parallel as to separate programs with different settings. I want one to use WASAPI as audio host and speakers as input device (the 2.0.5 portable has the WASAPI option), and the other to use the MME as audio host, and microphone as input device. When opening a new (second) window of the same installation/copy of Audacity, by executing twice the .exe file, it is the same as giving the command 'new' under 'File', what happens is not a second instance, but just a separate project/file and window. When settings are changed in one, they change exactly in the other. When trying to start a second copy of Audacity, or even a second different version, when one is already running, it will also open just a second project/file of the application that is already running, as before.

• Sound recognition software

  I'm looking for a software able to recognize an specific sound and then do some action. I want to leave my notebook close by the house intercom so when I hear someone ringing it, a very specific and unique sound, it will send me an email at my office or something. The main issue is that there's a lot of different noises there, but none would be as loud as the intercom for the specific place I've left the microphone. Is there any software out there able to do this? Hopefully with a mac version. I trust there's nothing closely related in this to speech or voice recognition technologies, and specially the softwares in there.

  Hi, while looking for a way to use speech recognition with flash I crossed paths with voice xml. I've gone through the wc3 description of it but still I have a few big questions. Can I simply create a vxml doc and place it on my webserver? What are the requirements? Will it work? Can I input with a microphone over the internet? I can't seem to find a direct answer to it. • USB Audio device not selectable in settings after Camtasia Studio

  I tried to use Camtasia Studio 7 Recorder today, and when I selected the "Record Microphone and System audio" option, the recorder crashed, and then my sound settings icon disappeared. If I tried to open the Camtasia Recorder's Options or tried to select the option again, the program crashed. After holding the power button to force restart (so My settings wouldn't save, theoretically) the audio device was still not showing up in the sound settings, although it still is displayed under the "Hardware" tab, and is Functional. Or at least that's what windows thinks. I tried uninstalling Camtasia, and no sucess either. The USB audio device is labeled "C-Media USB Headphone Set". OS: Windows XP SP3 hu-HU Is there any way I could make it work again, like registry editing or something?

• How can I make an actual compact cassette "tape" mix-tape from iTunes?

  I want to make an actual compact cassette mix-tape as a gift for someone. I use iTunes to manage all of my music. So a few questions: If I gather a bunch of songs on a playlist for sides A/B of the tape, how can I ensure that the volume for all songs is the same as it plays on the tape? I was thinking of finding an old compact casette recorder and putting the single line sterio output of my Mac to the casette's microphone input. Is that a good way to record onto the actual tape? How long is each side of a compact tape? Is there a default speed the tape plays at? Let's say I want to mesh some songs together so that they will completely fill up one side of a tape (cut off 10 seconds off the end of one song or the beginning of another song), what's the best way to do that?

  i have a laptop with 16'' wide screen, but the screen is broken and i want to buy only the screen and replace it.. my laptop is: HP Pavilion dv6-1050us what i know about the screen is that it's model number 512357-001 "16inch widescreen BrightView BV display panel IMR, with web camera and microphone". I did find some screen which seems to be the one but i'm not sure and dont want to spend money for the wrong screen, can any one help please? I search on e-bay for a compatible screen and left with a few questions..   I use WINDOWS 7 (x64) (Russian) I want to stream life audio from my default audio capture device (microphone) When I set up VLM settings using visual enviroment instruments - VLM settings it all works fine. But when I export created settings/configuration *.vlm file and try to inport it into VLM it gives me nothing I opened that .vlm there is some text... so now I try to run VLC with default settings like this: vlc -i dshow:// --dshow-adev= :sout=#transcode{acodec=mp3,ab=128,channels=2,samplerate=44100}:std{access=http,mux=raw,dst=127.0.0.1:8084} but it dies giving me errors...=( So what shall I do to do live MP3 streaming from my default audio input device using VLC in non UI mode?

• Remove noise from a recording

  I used to record important technical meetings and demos using Camtasia Studio, using a Mic to capture the speaker voice. Sometimes we invite attendees by asking them to call us in the meeting, and they would call on a cell phone then we switch it to loudspeaker so we can hear and talk to them and also record the conversation on Camtasia. The problem I am having now is that playing back those recording produces the regular noise that results from the microphone being close to the mobile phone (the kind of noise you hear when your mobile phone rings and it is near a speaker). Any advice on removing this noise?

• Mini-jack problem with Sony Vaio (running XP)

  I have a five year old Sony Vaio laptop (vgn-fw31m) that has had impact damage to the audio-output mini-jack for about the last year or so. In a recent discussion with my brother, we wondered whether it would be possible to write a program that would enable windows to use the microphone mini-jack input as the audio-output? As I currently use this laptop for work I am not keen to risk pulling it apart in order to replace the components comprising the audio-out. I therefore 'hope' that a programming solution exists. • Macbook Drivers for Windows 7

  I have a hard drive which I removed from my HP Laptop and plugged into my Macbook. Windows 7 started well and then installed graphic driver but the others (sound, touchpad) were not recognized by the operating system. What should I do? Edit from OP Sorry for writing here. I don't know why but my account is not associated with this post. First, I have Tiger CD but problem is neigher my Macbook, nor my Desktop PC can read the CD. I have downloaded Driver's from Apple (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL74) but it's not working. I mean, when I double click the exe file, It gets listed in process list int task manager but after 5 seconds, I disappears. But somehow, Windows recognized my audio device and installed its driver. Microphone is ok but red light is on.

• How to switch easily between a 5.1 headset and 2.1 speakers ?

  I have a 5.1 headset that I mostly use for gaming and watching movies. It is connected using 3 jacks to the rear panel of my motherboard (plus one for the microphone). I also have some small 2.1 speakers that I sometimes use to listen to music or to share a video/movie with someone. For now, what I do is crawl under my desk, and switch the cables. As my motherboard has 7.1 capabilities, I am wondering if there could be a way of having all 4 jack cables always plugged in, and switching on which device to output the sound programmatically. Has anybody had a similar problem, and how did you solve it ?

• Real time audio streaming

  I have a remote computer running OS X. I would like to stream the audio from the microphone input over the network so I can listen to it. Primarily I want to do this because I'm out of the office but still need to communicate with people there. I would like to use VLC, but am not fully aware of the options available. I tried SoundFly (as recommended by another answer) but this didn't seem to want to connect. At this point I should note that I'm using a VPN network to connect to the remote computer (using Hamachi). I can open up ports / etc fine though, so I should be able to do this. Alright, I found Nicecase which does exactly what I want but I would prefer to not have to shell out $40 for it.

• I'm having two Windows 7 installed and running in my laptop. How can I delete the other one?

  I have another concern with my laptop. When I had a problem with the microphone, I tried to restore the system. But sadly, I had a mistake with the process and accidentally it was formatted. Its a built in laptop. (Toshiba m840, Windows 7, 64 bit) After the format process, programs were automatically installed. Until a friend of mine told me that I might have 2 Windows installed already. When we checked the program, he was right. I'm having 2 program files folders, which means I really have 2 Windows installed and running in my laptop. Supposed to be, there should be only 1 right? Can anyone help me how to delete the other Windows? Because I think it is occupying much space in the hard drive. They say it could make my laptop become slower.

  I face into this problem and before ask here I've searched and read a lot of question but no-one seems to fit to my problem. I have a server running Windows Server 2008 Web with the SP2 and a headset attached to it using audio jack. The server has audio driver since I can listen audio. This OS does not came with the built-in audio record tool (the one I have in Windows 7). I can access physically and remotely (using RDC) to this server with administration permission. My local pc has Windows 7 if it can help. All I want to do is to know if it's possible and how to record audio form the microphone (of the server) and store that file in the server from remote connection. I tried to install several software on the server but everyone fails with a different issues (missing DLL which if I put in the system the error doesn't go away).

• Where are the Record Volume Controls in Windows 7?

  Windows XP (and previous versions) had a Record Volume Control panel that could be used to select between music inputs (Stereo Mix, Wav, etc) and a microphone. There doesn't seem to be an equivalent capability in Windows 7 . Is there a third party application that provides this functionality? Note: the Windows XP Record Volume Control was accessed by doubleclicking the Speaker icon in the system try which displayed the (Listen) Volume Control. In the menu there was a "properties" which gave you the option of displaying the RECORD Volume Control instead. I used this capabiliy in Win XP to select the required inputs for an Internet Radio Station and now with Win 7, I can't do it any longer

  Catching up on a couple of sessions I did in the past. This article gives an overview of some of my activities. Mainly at the annual German Visual FoxPro Developer Conference also known as SQL-Server & ASP.NET Conference in Frankfurt. • Lenovo Ideapad 205 and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

  I just wanted to report one thing, because I know there are a lot of Ideapad S205 users out there, that had issues running Ubuntu on their Lenovo Ideapad S205 in the past. Lenovo Ideapad with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS: Everything works out of the box. I just installed it and everything, including the microphone, the webcam, the WLAN, the AMD E-350 CPU/GPU and the sound worked right away. In other words: Everything works. Even the AMD E-350 GPU works very well with the Open Source drivers and with the prop. drivers. The prop. drivers were automatically offered to me via Ubuntu itself. It works great. A long idea, written short: I love it. It's extremly stable and very fast. I am using the German version of the Idepad S205, combined with the 32bit version of Ubuntu. There is only one, single thing to keep in mind when installing Ubuntu on the S205: Plugin your USB/CD/DVD drive in the left USB-Port. I don't know why, but it only works with the USB-Port on the left side of the Netbook. This is only for installing Ubuntu. • Bluetooth Issues Ubuntu 13.10

  I have a bluetooth headset which works perfectly on Ubuntu 13.04. Now I update to 13.10, and here is what's happing: After installing blueman, bluetooth-suport, pulseaudio-module-bluetooth and so on, I can find my device, pair it and connect to the headset service. But the device does not appear on the Sound Settings, so I just can't select it as input/output device. In other words, it's connected but "useless". So, searching around for solutions, I found a software called stream2ip. With this I can connect the device and it appears on the Sound Settings, the sound plays on the device as well, but I microphone does not work, even when selected on the settings, also the A2DP option still not working. Stream2ip isn't a solution at all, I mean everything was working without it in the previous Ubuntu version. Maybe I'm missing something, and I hope someone could give me any hint. And formally, the question: How can I get the A2DP output option and the input working again, on the Ubuntu 13.10? Thanks!

• How do I record video to a local disk in AIR?

  I'm trying to record a webcam's video and audio to a FLV file stored on the users local hard disk. I have a version of this code working which uses NetConnection and NetStream to stream the video over a network to a FMS (Red5) server, but I'd like to be able to store the video locally for low bandwidth/flaky network situations. I'm using FLex 3.2 and AIR 1.5, so I don't believe there should be any sandbox restrictions which prevent this from occurring. Things I've seen: FileStream - Allows reading.writing local files but no .attachCamera and .attachAudio methids for creating a FLV. flvrecorder - Produces screen grabs from the web cam and creates it's own flv file. Doesn't support Audio. License prohibits commercial use. SimpleFLVWriter.as - Similar to flvrecorder without the wierd license. Doesn't support audio. This stackoverflow post - Which demonstrates the playback of a video from local disk using a NetConnection/NetStream. Given that I have a version already which uses NetStream to stream to the server I thought the last was most promising and went ahead and put together this demo application. • Update to kernel 3.12 seems to fail: uname reports old rc7

  I currently run Xubuntu 13.10 with kernel 3.12 rc7. Today I tried updating to the latest 3.12 kernel (non-rc), but this seems to fail. When installing the image and headers I see the following error passing by: ... run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/postinst.d/dkms 3.12.0-031200-generic /boot/vmlinuz-3.12.0-031200-generichis Error! The dkms.conf for this module includes a BUILD_EXCLUSIVE directive which does not match this kernel/arch. This indicates that it should not be built. ... After rebooting, when I do uname -r or cat /proc/version it tells me that I'm still running on the old rc7 kernel. Since my microphone wasn't working on my Sony Vaio Pro 13 I did download and install the latest ALSA drivers using the oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms package which seem to fix the problem (with the mic). Maybe this has something to do with it? I also tried removing the package using sudo apt-get purge oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms but no success.

• Bluetooth headset A2DP works, HSP/HFP not (no sound/no mic)

  My Philips SBH9001 headset pairs fine using Ubuntu 12.04. In the audio settings it's properly detected as A2DP device and as HSP/HFP device. Hardware: Thinkpad X230, Ubuntu 12.04 64bit, Kernel 3.6.0-030600rc3-generic (build from Ubuntu mainline repo), Bluetooth device is USB-Id 0a5c:21e6 from Broadcom, Headset is a Philips SBH9001. Note: Kernel 3.6 rc3 is used because of a fix for audio on the dockingstation that is not in any previous branches. Playing audio in A2DP works just fine out of the box, but when switching the headset to HSP/HSP mode there is no sound nor does the microphone work. • Star Trek inspired home automation visualisation

  I’ve always been a more or less active fan of Star Trek. During the construction phase of my house I started coding a GUI for controlling the house which has an EIB. Just for fun I designed a version inspired by the LCARS design used in Star Trek TNG and showed this to my wife. I showed her several designs before but this was the only one, she really liked. So I decided to go on with this. I started a C# WinForms application. The software runs on a wall mounted Shuttle Barebone-PC. First plan was an industrial panel-pc but the processor was too slow. The now-used Atom is ok. I started with the LCARS-controls found on Codeproject. Since the classic LCARS design divides the screen into two parts this tended to be impracticable, so I used my own design For now the software is able to: Switch lights/wall outlets Show current temperatures for all room controllers Show outside temperature with a 24h trend chart Show the status of the two heat pumps Provide an alarm clock (e.g. for cooking) Play internet radio streams Control absence Mute the door bell Speak status messages via speech synthesis For now, I’m working on an integration of my electric meter. The main heat pump and the electric meter are connected to my LAN. I also tried some speech recognition, but I’ve problems with the microphone. I't’s working when you are right in front of the PC, but not far away, let’s say on the other side of the room. So this is the main view. The table displays raw values which are sent over the EIB – completely useless but looks great For each floor I have a different view. Here you can see the temperatures and check the status of the lights (the buttons are blinking when a light is switched on) This is the view for the heat pump:   Next step would be to integrate a control of my squeezebox server (I use different Squeezeboxes through the house as a multiroom audio solution)

• Reasonable technological solutions to create CRM using .NET eventually Java

  My background(If it's too long, just skip it please ; ) ): I am Java programmer(because of demand): mostly teacher for other students, worked on few thesis for others, but during my journey I discovered that .NET and Microsoft's tools are on at least two levels higher than Java and its tools so I want to learn more about them. I programmed little bit on Windows Phone(NFC Tags, TCP Clients, guitar tuner using internal microphone, simple RSS), used WPF, integrated WPF with Windows Forms, Apple Bonjour(.NET), I have expierience with IP cameras and with unusal problems, I learn Android, but I don't like it at all. Problem: I was asked by my friend to create CRM for small new company. There will maximum 20 workers in the company working at computers in few cities in the country(Poland). They just want to store contracts with the clients and client's data. I am not sure what exacly they do but probably sell apartments so there will be at most few thousands of contracts to store in far future. Now I am totally new to CRM but I want to learn. I have few questions: Should the data be stored on a server in the company's building running 24/7 or cloud. If cloud which one? Should I use ASPX or WPF. I read one topic about it but as far as I know aspx sites can be viewed from every device with internet browser: tablets, phones(Android, WP, iOS) and computers at the same time- so the job is done once and for all(Am I right?), I don't know nothing about aspx. Can WPF be also used in manner that does not need to port it for other platforms?

• Can't install Ubuntu, black screen after install

  I tried several times, but wasn't able to make it work. I tried all recent types of Ubuntu but it didn't work. Then I tried acpi=off at the beginning of the installation. In this way I could finish the installation. But after the restart Ubuntu didn't work. Only a black screen appeared. Before that I tried it on the VirtualBox and it work. • Webcam doesn't work in Ubuntu 12.10

  I have Gembird cam68ut. On my Ubuntu 12.10 it shows black screen in cheese and guvcview. I tested it in win7, it works fine. Here what I found: It is a uvc compliant camera, I checked on the site: 18ec:3299 USB 2.0 PC Camera (model number QC3231) ArkMicro This webcam is report by lsusb: Bus 001 Device 004: ID 18ec:3299 Arkmicro Technologies Inc. Here is the output of dmesg | tail: uvcvideo: Found UVC 1.00 device USB2.0 PC CAMERA (18ec:3299) uvcvideo: UVC non compliance - GET_DEF(PROBE) not supported.
