• Why would MessageBox fail silently?

  Does anyone know how MessageBox(...) could fail silently? MessageBox(g_hMainhWnd, buffer, "Oops!", MB_OK | MB_ICONERROR); ShellExecute(0, "open", "http://intranet/crash_handler.php", NULL, "", SW_SHOWNORMAL); For a little context, this code is called inside our own exception handler, which was registered with SetUnhandledExceptionFilter() Most of the time, I see the message box, and then it launches a web browser. However, I have an exe, which as far as I'm aware uses this exact code, and it successfully launches the web browser, but I do not see the message box first. Thanks Tim

• relative path issue (noob)

  I am using the following code to check existence of a file before publishing an image in my erb file. <% @imagename = @place.name + ".jpg" %> <% if FileTest.exist?( "/Users/Tim/projects/game/public/" + @imagename ) %> <p><img src= '<%= @imagename %>' width="400" height="300" /> </p> <% end %> And when I publish this to Heroku, it obviously wont work. • Easiest way to combine a dataset and other data in a single file?

  I have a dataset in C# which I can serialise using dataset.WriteXml(filename); but I want the file to contain other data as well (essentially some meta data about the dataset). I could add another table to the dataset which contained the metadata, but I'd prefer to keep it separate, if at all possible. Essentially I think I want to create a 'combination of files' file, that looks something like this: size_of_file1 file1 size_of_file2 file2 ... etc Then, I'd like to load the file into memory, and split the file into separate streams, so that I can feed the dataset into dataset.ReadXml(stream); and the metadata into something else. Sound possible? Can anyone tell me how I can do it? Thanks Tim

• Play a video with flash (with no controls, pause, etc) and stretch to full width and height of page.

  Hi, I've managed this so far: [removed url] The plan is to have that video stretch across the whole page (the flash does, the video itself does not). Firstly: well aware of the issues - bad performance, horribly stretched/pixelated video. I know this. However a client wants it so we have to do it, simple as that. Does anyone have any ideas on how this can be achieved? I've been in touch with the creators of the flash video player I'm currently using and they've confirmed it isn't possible with that flash video player. Anyone know of any players where it is possible? Thanks, Tim

I use Xcode 4 and I have one target with keys: Bundle display name : ${PRODUCT_NAME} Bundle name : ${PRODUCT_NAME} What I want, my project name is for example "test" but I want to have "MySuperApp". • SQL Server 2008 + expensive union all

  Hi al, we have 5 tables over which we should query with user search input throughout a stored procedure. We do a union all of the similar data inside a view. Because of this the view can not be materialized. We are not able to change these 5 tables drastically (like creating a 6th table that contains the similar data of the 5 tables and reference that new one from the 5 tables). The query is rather expensive / slow what are our other options? It's allowed to think outside the box. Unfortunately I cannot give more information like the table/view/SP definition because of customer confidentiality... greetings, Tim

• Match Phrases (in array) in text string

  I'm using the Twitter API streaming to collect thousand of tweets every minute. They need to be matched to a list of keywords (can contain spaces). This is my current method: $text = preg_replace( '/[^a-z0-9]+/i', ' ', strtolower( $data['text'] ) ); $breakout = explode( " ", $text ); $result = array_intersect( $this->_currentTracks, $breakout ); I chop the tweet into words, and the matches them against my current keywords. This works well for all the keywords without a space ofc. If I wanted to find for example "Den Haag", It won't show up, because the string is exploded into words (based on the spaces). Any ideas about how I can do this in a quick way? Kind regards, Tim

• How to understand the memory usage and load average in linux server

  Hi, I am using a linux server which has 128GB of memory and 24 cores. I use top to see how much it is used. Its output is pasted at the end of the post. Here are two questions: (1) I see that each of the running processes occupies a very small percentage of memory (%MEM no more than 0.2%, and most just 0.0%), but how the total memory is almost used as in the fourth line of output ("Mem: 130766620k total, 130161072k used, 605548k free, 919300k buffers")? The sum of used percentage of memory over all processes seems unlikely to achieve almost 100%, doesn't it? (2) how to understand the load average on the first line ("load average: 14.04, 14.02, 14.00")? Thanks and regards! Edit: Thanks! I also really like to hear some rough numbers based on used percentage of memory to determine if a server is heavily loaded, since I once became the one who cramed the server without understanding the current load. Is swap regarded as almost the same as memory? For example, when memory and swap are almost of same size, if the memory is almost running out but the swap is still largely free, may I just view it as if the used percentage of memory + swap is still not high and run other new processes? How would you consider together CPU or memory (or memory + swap) usage? Do you become worried if either of them reaches too high or both? Moreover, new elements can be added in any order later, so I would like to sort them by value using C preprocessor or maybe there is any compilers flag (GCC)? • jQuery DataTables: Problems with POST Server Side JSON output

  Hello Everyone, I am trying to get my datatable to take a POST JSON output from my server. When I change my sAjaxSource to view this page the table doesn't move beyond 'processing'. When I view the JSON directly I see this output. {"sEcho": 1, "iTotalRecords": 1, "iTotalDisplayRecords": 1, "aaData": [ ["Trident","First Ever Job"]] } Just for fun I went to the POST server-side example and copied some of the JSON they are using for their example and just PHP echoed it straight out of another page. This is the output of that page. {"sEcho": 1, "iTotalRecords": 1, "iTotalDisplayRecords": 1, "aaData": [ ["Trident","Internet Explorer 4.0"]] } Here is where it gets interesting. The JSON that has been processed by the server fails to work yet the JSON simply echo'd by the same server on a different page does work... yet both are almost identical in outputs. • CSS absolute DIV causing other absolute DIV problems

  Hello, I have implemented a chat script which requires an absolutely positioned DIV to be wrapped around the pages content. This is to ensure the chat windows stay at the bottom. The problem is that because of the absolute positioning of this main wrapper, all other absolutely positioned elements (eg. Jquery Auto-completes, datepicker's etc) now scroll up and down with the page.   Hello, I am using Jquery Date pickers to get Start and End Dates for an application I am building. I have two datepickers, one for a start date and one for an end date. When someone clicks a date in the start date picker I need that date to be appended automatically to the end date picker. I also need the end date picker to select future dates only from the date that has been appended to it. There are two demos on the jquery datepicker site that do what I want, but I am unsure how to combine them to both do what I want. The exception to this is when the on page load the select menu already has the 2nd menu item selected, the field does not show.
