• URL Navigation and SQL Insertion After RadioButtonList Selection

  Good Morning, I have a radiobuttonlist in my ASP.NET webforms application that is used as a voting tool. The concept is as follows: Users will vote for the blurb in the contentplaceholder using the radiobuttonlist. My list item values are 1 through 3 and my list item text is something like low, medium and high. Questions: 1. I want to save and accumulate votes for a given blurb. The blurb ID is referenced in a meta tag on the content page. How do I reference the meta tag in my SQL insert statement? 2. When the radiobuttonlist is used, can it cause the next content page to be loaded after the SQL insert is done? That is, I don't necessarily want the user to make the radiobuttonlist selection, then have to click a separate button to cast vote and move to next page. I want all that done in the radiobuttonlist.   I use to create an application that uses the windows speech recognition engine or the SAPI. its like a game for pronunciation that it give you score when you pronounce it correctly. but when i started experiments with SAPI, it has poor recognition unless if you load a grammar on it (XML) its give best recognition result. but the problem now is closest pronunciation from the input text will be recognize. for example: Database - dedebase - correct. even if you mispronounce it. it gives you correct answers. without using the xml grammar when you say database it give you "in the base/the base/data base/etc..." please post your answer,suggestion,clarification. votes for best answer. is it possible or not? by the way i use delphi compiler on the projects....

The remote voting units should be as small as possible. What form of data transmission should be used for the voting? To be nominated for an answer I will require MSIL analysis and not a guess or measuring of time with granny's watch... P.S. as one of variations I proposed i * i not because I wanted to do Sqrt(i * i) afterwards but because i will be used only once to be compared to a const.   Hay, I'm working on a simple voting system, where users can vote on a poll. My model looks like this class Poll(models.Model): question = models.CharField() votes = models.IntegerField() usersVoted = models.ManyToManyField(User) Now, i want to scan through the usersVoted field to see if a User object is in there. This User object will then be matched against a logged in User (User obj saved in a session). If the User has voted i want to be able to set a 'has_voted' field. I then want to use this field in my view. I will be using the Property() thingy inside the model to work this 'has_voted' value out. Like so def _can_vote(self): return False can_vote = property(_can_vote) Obviously it'll return a Bool. Any ideas how to search through a related field to find a specific Object?

• What are the lesser known but cool data structures ?

  There a some data structures around that are really cool but are unknown to most programmers. Which are they? Everybody knows linked lists, binary trees, and hashes, but what about Skip lists, Bloom filters for example. I would like to know more data structures that are not so common, but are worth knowing because they rely on great ideas and enrich a programmer's tool box. PS: I am also interested on techniques like Dancing links which make interesting use of the properties of a common data structure. EDIT: Please try to include links to pages describing the data structures in more detail. Also, try to add a couple of words on why a data structures is cool (as Jonas Kölker already pointed out). Also, try to provide one data-structure per answer. This will allow the better data structures to float to the top based on their votes alone.

• Problem with anchor tags in Django after using lighttpd + fastcgi

  I just started using lighttpd and fastcgi for my django site, but I've noticed my anchor links are no longer working. I used the anchor links for sorting links on the page, for example I use an anchor to sort links by the number of points (or votes) they have received. For example: the code in the html template: ... {% load sorting_tags %} ... {% ifequal sort_order "points" %} {% trans "total points" %} {% trans "or" %} {% anchor "date" "date posted" %} {% order_by_votes links request.direction %} {% else %} {% anchor "points" "total points" %} {% trans "or" %} {% trans "date posted" %} ... The anchor link on "www.mysite.com/my_app/" for total points will be directed to "my_app/?sort=points" But the correct URL should be "www.mysite.com/my_app/?sort=points" All my other links work, the problem is specific to anchor links. • Why people don't use LabView for purposes other than data acquisition and virtualization?

  This is marked as a subjective question, I hope I won't get too many down votes though. LV seems to offer a nice graphic alternative to traditional text based programming. As I understand, it's not a just-virtualization/data acquisition programming language. Nonetheless, it seems to have that paradigm pegged to its creator's name. My question comes up because it doesn't seem to be widely used for multi-purpose applications. I'm not a LV-expert of any kind, I'm more like a learner. I'm still getting used to LV.

  I have written a program for a stack. My question is there any other way except for a StringBuilder for such kind of problem? Also in what other kind of cases does this kind of problem happen?   Hello, I know it's a frequent question but I just can't figure it out and the examples I found didn't helped. What I learned, the best strategy is to try to find the top and bottom values of the top range and then select the rest, but implementing is a bit tricky. Example table: id | title | group_id | votes I'd like to get the top 3 voted rows from the table, for each group. I'm expecting this result: 91 | hello1 | 1 | 10 28 | hello2 | 1 | 9 73 | hello3 | 1 | 8 84 | hello4 | 2 | 456 58 | hello5 | 2 | 11 56 | hello6 | 2 | 0 17 | hello7 | 3 | 50 78 | hello8 | 3 | 9 99 | hello9 | 3 | 1 I've fond complex queries and examples, but they didn't really helped.

• Python: How do I pass a variable by reference?

Update: I am coming to the conclusion that while Andrea answered my actual question (Can you... No but you can...), on the subject of pass by reference Blair Conrad is more technically correct. As I understand it the crux is that a copy of a reference is being passed. If you assign that copy, as in my example, then you lose the reference to the original and it remains unchanged. If, however, you 'use' that reference, for example append on a passed list, then the original is changed. I will see how the comments and votes go before choosing the answer people think is the best

• Learning Python coming from PHP

  Community wiki so don't vote to close, kthxbai. My dynamic language experience is solely PHP. I want to learn Python now to broaden my career opportunities and just because I like programming. :) When learning Java, I used a site (lost the URL/real name now), something like "Java for PHP developers" that had all on one side of the page the PHP code, and on the other side the Java code to do the same thing. • Order database results by bayesian rating

  I'm not sure this is even possible, but I need a confirmation before doing it the "ugly" way :) So, the "results" are posts inside a database which are stored like this: the posts table, which contains all the important stuff, like the ID, the title, the content the post meta table, which contains additional post data, like the rating (this_rating) and the number of votes (this_num_votes). This data is stored in pairs, the table has 3 columns: post ID / key / value. It's basically the WordPress table structure. What I want is to pull out the highest rated posts, sorted based on this formula: br = ( (avg_num_votes * avg_rating) + (this_num_votes * this_rating) ) / (avg_num_votes + this_num_votes) which I stole form here. avg_num_votes and avg_rating are known variables (they get updated on each vote), so they don't need to be calculated. Can this be done with a mysql query? Or do I need to get all the posts and do the sorting with PHP?

• Finding the best jquery plugins

  Is there a resource for finding the "best" jquery plugins, or at least just the most used ones? For example, I wanted to find a menu jquery plugin but when I goto the jquery website there are so many to look through and I don't see a way to see how popular each one is. For ruby there's the http://ruby-toolbox.com/ which lists many plugins, how popular they are, info about them, etc. Is there something similar or at least some way to filter through all the jquery plugins? EDIT 1: To shed some more light on this - the "most popular" link on the jquery page is useless. I can't find a way to search through it but even worse, the ratings don't seem to mean much. Ex - the first item, in other words the most popular plugin in that list has 5 stars and TWO votes. Doesn't seem like a very reliable resource to me.

  I'm trying to select a record with the most effective votes. Each record has an id, the number of upvotes (int) and the number of downvotes (int) in a MySQL database. I know basic update, select, insert queries but I'm unsure of how to form a query that looks something like: SELECT * FROM topics WHERE MAX(topic.upvotes - topic.downvotes). Please excuse my made up SQL. The tutorials on SQL I find on the internet cover very basic stuff. Does anyone recommend a good book on this subject?

The code below works fine until I want to create choices, where for some reason I always get this error message: line 22, in unicode return self.question AttributeError: 'Choice' object has no attribute 'question' Unfortunatley, I dont understand where I made an error. • How to handle updating JDO class definitions on Google App Engine

  I'm using the Google app engine and JDO. What is the best way to update a JDO class definition without having to wipe the data store contents first? I'm not sure if this is specific to JDO on GAE, but I noticed that when I simply change the name of one of my persistent fields from svotes to votes, an exception is thrown (java.lang.NoSuchFieldError: svotes). I expect once my site goes live I might want to make some changes to my JDO class definitions, such as adding a field or something. Any suggestions for how to update the data definitions without having to wipe the database?
