  • Viewing zip archive contents using 'less' on OS X.

    I couldn't help but notice that the 'less' program on all of the recent distributions of Linux that I've used (Ubuntu and Gentoo in this case) allow me to view the contents of ZIP and TAR archives, while the install of 'less' that I have on OS X (and Solaris) instead produce a "foo.zip may be a binary file. See it anyway?", which proceeds to spit out the raw binary data instead of a nice file structure listing. Google has not produced much in the way of helpful results -- it's tricky to search for 'less' in this context. I downloaded and built the latest version from greenwoodsoftware.com, but even it refuses to show the contents of these archives. I didn't come across any related configure/build options either. Any ideas? Thanks!

  • Unzipping archives, preserving folder hierarchy

    I've got a problem and am not sure what it is, but hope someone can help me think this through because this has me stumped. Backstory: I wrote a Java app (Android) that unzips some zip files downloaded from the network. Until now, this was working great. Then, this week, the archives that I'm creating on my pc (in Ubuntu 12.04) unzip on the Android phone into a flat hierarchy instead of preserving the folders. I'm creating the archives the same way (right-click on folder compress) but even though my old archives (created in 10.04) still unzip as expected, the new ones don't. On Ubuntu, the new zip files look the same to me as the old ones. When unzipped on my pc the folders in these new archives are restored the same as the old ones... it's the Android app that extracts the old ones fine and the new ones flat. What I really want to know, though, is what the difference between the archives is. Question: How could one determine why one zip archive would be extracted with folder hierarchy preserved, when an identical one (to all appearances on Ubuntu 12.04) is extracted with no hierarchy? Are there different ways in which a .zip file can "have" folders, but Ubuntu doesn't distinguish between them?

  • Can I disable this Windows (XP) Security Warning?

    I recently reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP (I know I'll have to take the plunge and commit to Win8 "real soon, now", but I'm just not quite ready for the upheaval yet! :) I used to use WinRar (and later, when I got fed up with the "nag" messages, 7-Zip), but I haven't installed either of them in my new configuration, so I must be using the built-in XP facility when I open *.zip files. For years, I've been opening downloaded *.zip archives, and using "drag & drop" to copy to a File Explorer window open on the folder where I want the files to end up (usually, My Documents\Downloads). But now I find that when I "drop" the file(s), I get a pop-up Windows Security Warning saying Are you sure you want to copy or move files to this folder? You should only move or copy files from locations that you trust Can anyone explain why I'm getting this message, and is there any (reasonably easy, please! :) way to suppress it? Since I've already put the *.zip file on my computer, it seems a bit late to ask if I trust it. (Thus far, the files in question have always been plain text, so it's not a matter of dodgy programs, etc.) Apologies for the low quality image - I don't have the appropriate tools or knowledge to do any better, and it doesn't help that my "PrtScr" screen capture has included what would have been on my second monitor (TV) if it had been turned on. If you can't read it, trust me - I have copied the text verbatim.

  • Linux - File was deleted and then reappeared when folder was zipped

    Hello, I am using Backtrack 4 Final, which is a Linux distro that is Ubuntu based. I had a directory that contained around 5 files. I deleted one of the files, which sent it to the trash. I then zipped the directory up (now containing 4 files), using this command: zip -r directory.zip directory/ When I then unzipped directory.zip, the file I deleted was in there again. I couldn't believe this, so I zipped up the directory again, and the file reappeared again but this time could not be opened because the operating system said it didn't exist or something. I don't remember the exact error, and I cannot make this happen again. Would anyone happen to know why a file that was deleted from a directory would reappear in that directory after it was zipped up? Thank you.

    What is a "good" tool to encrypt (password protect) .pdf files? (without being required to buy additional software; the protection can be created under linux but the password query should work on Windows, too) I know that zip can do it: zip zipfile_name_without_ending -e files_to_encrypt.foo What I don't like about this is that for a single file, you have to use Winzip to open the zip and then click the file again. I rather would like to be prompted for a password when opening the .pdf (single file case). I know that pdftk can do this: pdftk foo.pdf output foo_protected.pdf user_pw mypassword. The problem here is that the password is displayed in the terminal -- even if you use ... user_pw PROMPT. But in the end you get a password-protected .pdf and you are prompted for the password when opening the file.

    I try to unzip a zip file, but got an error: $ unzip COCR2_100.zip Archive: COCR2_100.zip End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on the last disk(s) of this archive. note: COCR2_100.zip may be a plain executable, not an archive unzip: cannot find zipfile directory in one of COCR2_100.zip or COCR2_100.zip.zip, and cannot find COCR2_100.zip.ZIP, period. I googled but didn't find a solution. I was wondering why it is and how I should fix it? Thanks! The zip file can be downloaded from COCR2_100.     WAR files are simply ZIP files with a renamed extension. I'd like to configure a compression program to handle these (on double-clicking the file), but jZip doesn't recognize them unless I rename them to .ZIP. I have setup Windows file associations, but jZip just wants to 'add them to archive' instead of opening them. Which compression program would you recommend?

    I am attempting to use the zip -r command to zip a folder which includes two files. I need to pass the absolute path of the folder with two files (/path/to/my/files/), which is causing all of the folders to be zipped with it, where as I only need the last folder (files/) and its contents to be zipped, so that when the file is unzipped, there is only one folder and the two files within it. How can I modify the command to be able to pass the absolute paths in the arguments while keeping only the last folder?

When I try to create a "Self Extracting Installer" option, at the end of the install it runs my batch file and it appears to be extracting all the files just before it does that, but after extraction, the files are nowhere to be found (except within the .7z archive).     I want to upload a zip file in a jsp page and the user is sent to another jsp page after he selects and uploads the file. In this second page I want to 1.)extract the uploaded zip file. 2.)read some content from the extracted file(s) and allow the user to change/edit them 3.)save the user changes in the files. 4.)zip the files again and save it in another destination. Please suggest me a rough outline of a solution as I am stuck in the phase in which I get the uploaded file and re-direct the user to the second jsp.

    We have the Boost library in our side. It consists of huge amount of files which are not changing ever and only a tiny portion of it is used. We swap the whole boost directory if we are changing versions. Currently we have the Boost sources in our SVN, file by file which makes the checkout operations very slow, especially on Windows. It would be nice if there were a notation / plugin to address C++ files inside ZIP files, something like: // @ZIPFS ASSIGN 'boost' 'boost.zip/boost' #include <boost/smart_ptr/shared_ptr.hpp> Are there any support for compiler hooks in g++? Are there any effort regarding ZIP support? Other ideas?

    I am unable to install programs for the Ubuntu 10.10 system. These download ok, but when attempting to install them, the following message is displayed: AN ERROR OCCURRED WHILE OPENING THE ARCHIVE END-OF-CENTRAL-DIRECTORY SIGNATURE NOT FOUND etc....... ZIPINFO: CANNOT FIND ZIPFILE DIRECTORY IN etc...... As I am new to Ubuntu and also fairly "green" as far as computer terminology is concerned, I have no idea what this means and don't have a clue on how to fix it. Can you help please?   • iPhone: Compressing .app files in command line (Mac OS X) removes CodeSigning

    I am trying to do a simple build automation of my iPhone apps with TeamCity, but having this nagging issue.. When I manually pickup and install .app file from the build folder it works great (syncs smoothly with iTunes and I can see the app on my phone) But when I try to zip this with /bin/zip or ditto...then the zipped contents loose the CodeSigning (iTunes says that it cannot install this app because its not signed) I have tried different combinations of these.. ditto -ck --rsrc --keepParent HelloWorld.app HelloWorld.zip Any more ideas?
