  • Why can't these generic type parameters be inferred?

    Given the following interfaces/classes: public interface IRequest<TResponse> { } public interface IHandler<TRequest, TResponse> where TRequest : IRequest<TResponse> { TResponse Handle(TRequest request); } public class HandlingService { public TResponse Handle<TRequest, TResponse>(TRequest request) where TRequest : IRequest<TResponse> { var handler = container.GetInstance<IHandler<TRequest, TResponse>>(); return handler.Handle(request); } } public class CustomerResponse { public Customer Customer { get; set; } } public class GetCustomerByIdRequest : IRequest<CustomerResponse> { public int CustomerId { get; set; } } Why can't the compiler infer the correct types, if I try and write something like the following: var service = new HandlingService(); var request = new GetCustomerByIdRequest { CustomerId = 1234 }; var response = service.Handle(request); // Shouldn't this know that response is going to be CustomerResponse? I just get the 'type arguments cannot be inferred' message. Is this a limitation with generic type inference in general, or is there a way to make this work?

  • Suggestions on Working with this Inherited Generic Method

    We have inherited a project that is a wrapper around a section of the core business model. There is one method that takes a generic, finds items matching that type from a member and then returns a list of that type. public List<T> GetFoos<T>() { List<IFoo> matches = Foos.FindAll( f => f.GetType() == typeof(T) ); List<T> resultList = new List<T>(); foreach (var match in matches) { resultList.Add((T)obj); } } Foos can hold the same object cast into various classes in inheritance hierarchy to aggregate totals differently for different UI presentations. There are 20+ different types of descendants that can be returned by GetFoos. The existing code basically has a big switch statement copied and pasted throughout the code. The code in each section calls GetFoos with its corresponding type. We are currently refactoring that into one consolidated area, but as we are doing that we are looking at other ways to work with this method. One thought was to use reflection to pass in the type, and that worked great until we realized the Invoke returned an object, and that it needed to be cast somehow to the List <T>. Another was to just use the switch statement until 4.0 and then use the dynamic language options. We welcome any alternate thoughts on how we can work with this method. I have left the code pretty brief, but if you'd like to know any additional details please just ask.

    This is about a utility i have happened to write which can parse through the properties of a data contracts at runtime using reflection. The input required is a look like XPath string. since this is using reflection, you dont have to add the reference to any of your data contracts thus making pure generic and re- usable.. you can read about this and get the full c# sourcecode here. Property-Parser-A-C-utility-to-retrieve-values-from-any-Net-Data-contracts-at-runtime Now about the doubts which i have about this utility. i am using this utility enormously i many places of my code I am using Regex repetedly inside a recursion method. does this affect the memmory usage or GC collection badly ?do i have to dispose this manually. if yes how ?. The statements like obj.GetType().GetProperty() and obj.GetType().GetField() returns .net "object" which makes difficult or imposible to introduce generics here. Does this cause to have any overheads like boxing ? on an overall, please suggest to make this utility performance efficient and more light weight on memmory

  • Cannot run Android "Camera Preview" sample

    The sample I'm referring to is: CameraPreview. The program simply force closes upon start up. I've also tried other camera demos that have the same problem. I'm trying to run the samples on my Nexus One and the emulator with the same problem on both. I'm not even sure if the emulator should be able to run them or not.     Is there any way to Linkify a specific TextView that is contained within a ListView? I tried using android:autoLink="all" but that didn't work. I was getting an out of context error. Important also to note: the ListView is my second view in the ViewFlipper. I have also tried: View mItemView = mAdapter.getView(2, null, null); TextView infoText = (TextView) mItemView.findViewById(R.id.rowText2); Linkify.addLinks(infoText, Linkify.ALL); Right after the adapter was bound to the ListView and the View was switched. No luck. Is this normal? I realize that I can (and will) just convert the string array values to an int, but it seems weird that I have to. Thanks!

    An OnItemClickListener for a ListView has the following method: @Override public void onItemClick(AdapterView<?> parent, View v, int position, long id) I'd like to have the adapter behind the ListView refresh, and I believe this is done through the use of: BaseAdapter.notifyDataSetChanged() How do I use the parent parameter in the onItemClick method to do this? So far I've tried: parent.getAdapter().notifyDataSetChanged(); This throws an error because the object returned is of class HeaderViewListAdapter, which for reasons unknown isn't a subclass of BaseAdapter.

Any way I could specify that in all cases, the conversion will indeed be possible (I'm basically getting integers, booleans, doubles and strings). Thanks!

  • Getting TF215097 error after modifying a build process template in TFS Team Build 2010

    When embracing Team Build 2010, you typically want to define several different build process templates for different scenarios. Common examples here are CI builds, QA builds and release builds. For example, in a contiuous build you often have no interest in publishing to the symbol store, you might or might not want to associate changesets and work items etc. The build server is often heavily occupied as it is, so you don’t want to have it doing more that necessary. Try to define a set of build process templates that are used across your company. In previous versions of TFS Team Build, there was no easy way to do this. But in TFS 2010 it is very easy so there is no excuse to not do it! :-)   I ran into a scenario today where I had an existing build definition that was based on our release build process template. In this template, we have defined several different build process parameters that control the release build. These are placed into its own sectionin the Build Process Parameters editor. This is done using the ProcessParameterMetadataCollection element, I will explain how this works in a future post.   I won’t go into details on these parametes, the issue for this blog post is what happens when you modify a build process template so that it is no longer compatible with the build definition, i.e. a breaking change. In this case, I removed a parameter that was no longer necessary. After merging the new build process template to one of the projects and queued a new release build, I got this error:   TF215097: An error occurred while initializing a build for build definition <Build Definition Name>: The values provided for the root activity's arguments did not satisfy the root activity's requirements: 'DynamicActivity': The following keys from the input dictionary do not map to arguments and must be removed: <Parameter Name>.  Please note that argument names are case sensitive. Parameter name: rootArgumentValues <Parameter Name> was the parameter that I removed so it was pretty easy to understand why the error had occurred. However, it is not entirely obvious how to fix the problem. When open the build definition everything looks OK, the removed build process parameter is not there, and I can open the build process template without any validation warnings. The problem here is that all settings specific to a particular build definition is stored in the TFS database. In TFS 2005, everything that was related to a build was stored in TFS source control in files (TFSBuild.proj, WorkspaceMapping.xml..). In TFS 2008, many of these settings were moved into the database. Still, lots of things were stored in TFSBuild.proj, such as the solution and configuration to build, wether to execute tests or not. In TFS 2010, all settings for a build definition is stored in the database. If we look inside the database we can see what this looks like. The table tbl_BuildDefinition contains all information for a build definition. One of the columns is called ProcessParameters and contains a serialized representation of a Dictionary that is the underlying object where these settings are stoded. When you run into problems, you will need help. Developers need your help so they can help you. Surprisingly enough, feedback like this isn’t very helpful: Your program isn’t working. How can I make it work? When you are ready to work with us on the SQL Developer OTN forum, you will most likely be asked to run SQL Developer and capture the output from the command console. In case you need help with this, ere’s a step-by-step process you can follow in Windows 7 (should work in XP too.) Open a windows command window Start – Run – CMD Once it’s open, click on the window icon and select ‘Defaults.’ Change the default buffer size to be something bigger, much bigger. Set the CMD window default buffer size HIGHER Note: you only need to do this once. Navigate to your SQL Developer Installation Folder Instead of running the ‘sqldeveloper.exe’ file in the root directory, we are going to go several sub-directories down. I burned it on a TDK CD-R80 700 MB CD from Windows 7 and even did the confirm to make sure it burned correctly. It has never read CDs like that before, so it's weird. Should I just make another CD? Or is there something wrong with the Macbook.

  • Pins on Pinterest link to 404 - yet link is valid

    this is a really strange one. I've set up a bunch of pins on Pinterest linking through to our services which all work fine. Then I decided to do the same on our blog articles (we use Wordpress), yet everytime I click the link (and I've done this on different computers) the link goes to a 404 page on our site. However the link is valid and if you right click the pin and open in new window it opens fine. I have contacted Pinterest who are next to useless. I have also tried different browsers, different computers and different Pinterest accounts. I can't see any weirdness in my htaccess files causing this so I'm a little stumped. Any suggestions?

  • Why do you need float/double?

    I was watching http://www.joelonsoftware.com/items/2011/06/27.html and laughed at Jon Skeet joke about 0.3 not being 0.3. I personally never had problems with floats/decimals/doubles but then I remember I learned 6502 very early and never needed floats in most of my programs. The only time I used it was for graphics and math where inaccurate numbers were ok and the output was for the screen and not to be stored (in a db, file) or dependent on. My question is, where are places were you typically use floats/decimals/double? So I know to watch out for these gotchas. With money I use longs and store values by the cent, for speed of an object in a game I add ints and divide (or bitshift) the value to know if I need to move a pixel or not. (I made object move in the 6502 days, we had no divide nor floats but had shifts). So I was mostly curious.

    I am totally new in linux/ubuntu I am trying to setup lamp on my OS, however I've installed apache , php , mysql by following commands: sudo apt-get install apache2 sudo apt-get install php5 sudo apt-get install libapache2-mod-php5 sudo apt-get install mysql-server libapache2-mod-auth-mysql php5-mysql sudo apt-get install phpmyadmin everything works fine except that i totally cannot log into MySQL(which leads to phpmyadmin failure login) getting the errors : #1045 Cannot log in to the MySQL server Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES) I googled the problem and also I have tried to reinstall all installed components, but the same result came up! in windows i usually modified the content of mysql configure file but in ubuntu nothing is as same as windows!:) can anybody help me on this, really need to setup lampp :-S thanks in advanced

    How to enable gnome shell extension?. When i click on gnome shell extension there is no ON button showing advanced settings -- shell extensions. In a youtube video I saw there is one ON button to enable shell extensions. i have allready installed gnome tweak tool and everything.. I have want to use user themes for gnome shell, but I am having troubles. I installed the user theme extension, but it doesn't appear to show up under the gnome tweak tool. To confirm that I have the user themes extension installed, here is the feedback I get when I try to install it through terminal again:
