  • Fast, easy, and secure method to perform DB actions with GET

    Hey All, Sort of a methods/best practices question here that I am sure has been addressed, yet I can't find a solution based on the vague search terms I enter. I know starting off the question with "Fast and easy" will probably draw out a few sighs, so my apologies. Here is the deal. I have a logged in area where an ADMIN can do a whole host of POST operations to input data relating to their profile. The way I have data structured is pretty distinct and well segmented in most tables as it relates to the ID of the admin. Now, I have a table where I dump one type of data into and differentiate this data by assigning the ADMIN's unique ID to each record. In other words, all ADMINs have this one type of data writing to this table. I just differentiate by the ADMIN ID with each record. I was planning on letting the ADMIN remove these records by clicking on a link with a query string - obviously using GET. Obviously, the query structure is in the link so any logged in admin could then exploit the URL and delete a competitor's records. Is the only way to safely do this through POST or should I pass through the session info that includes password and validate it against the ADMIN ID that is requesting the delete? This is obviously much more work for me. As they said in the auto repair biz I used to work in... there are 3 ways to do a job: Fast, Good, and Cheap. You can only have two at a time. Fast and cheap will not be good. Good and cheap will not have fast turnaround. Fast and good will NOT be cheap. haha I guess that applies here... can never have Fast, Easy and Secure all at once ;) Thanks in advance...

    I plan on using JSONP to call an external webservice to get around the fact that I dont want to create a global function that could potentially conflict with the calling page. I thought that creating a random function name and passing it up would work.   • PHP fastest method of reading server response

    Hi there, im having some real problems with the lag produced by using fgets to grab the server's response to some batch database calls im making. Im sending through a batch of say, 10,000 calls and ive tracked the lag down to fgets causing the hold up in the speed of my application as the response for each call needs to be grabbed. I have found this thread http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=32806 which explains the problem quite well, but hes reading a file, not a server response so fread could be a bit tricky as i could get part of the next line, and extra stuff which i dont want. Any help much appreciated!

(my application is behind a NAT) This kind of service could allow me to make a p2p coordination server with normal php hosting. The p2p clients would know their UDP ports from this service They will then contact my server over HTTP (which is what regular web hosting allows) and tell it their port (and ip, which is normally supplied to cgi scripts) My server will give the clients the IP addresses and ports of the other clients.

Map<Object,Object> params = new HashMap<Object,Object>(); params.put("objA",ObjA) ; ...... public void doSomething(Map<Object,Object> params) { // extracting params Object objA = (Object)params.get("objA"); ...... } This is not a good practice , encapsulate params into a map is totally a waste of efficiency. The good thing is , the clean signature , easy to add other params with fewest modification . what's the best practice for this kind of problem ?

    I have 2 classes: A and B. Some methods of class A need to use class B and the opposite(class B has methods that need to use class A). So I have: class A; class B { method1(A a) { } } class A { method1(B b) { } void foo() { } } and everything works fine. But when I try to call foo() of class A from B::method1 like this: class B { method1(A a) { a.foo(); } } I get as result compile errors of forward declaration and use of incomplete type. But why is this happening? (I have declared class A before using it?)

    So, I'm looking to implement the ability for a plugin I wrote to read a touch "swipe" from a touch-capable internet device, like an iPhone, iPad or android. Is there anything out there? I'm not looking for something as full as jQtouch, though was considering reverse engineering the code I would need out of it. Any suggestions on the best way to approach this? A snippet of code already available? Addendum: I realize in hindsight the solution won't strictly be jQuery, as I'm pretty sure there aren't any built-in methods to handle this. When I checked the server log, it shows this message: Processing ApplicationController#create (for 127.0.0.1 at 2010-05-08 16:26:14) [POST] Parameters: {"commit"=>"Signup", "password_confirmation"=>"[FILTERED]", "action"=>"create", "authenticity_token"=>"yOcHY+rMjaqmu9HS8EwnDqJKbc0Zxictc0y4dtD26ac=", "controller"=>"users", "login"=>"bob", "password"=>"[FILTERED]", "email"=>"[email protected]"} NameError (uninitialized constant UsersController): In the params, I can see that it is calling the "users" controller. But I'm not sure how to fix that, or what is causing it to call the "users" controller as opposed to the "user" controller. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

I'm using the static methods to load data from an xml file via a XmlResourceParser. To create a XmlResourceParser requires a call on the Application Context. So my question is, what is the best way to get a reference to the Application Context into the static methods? Have each Activity get it and pass it in? Store it somehow in a global variable?

    Have a small script in Microsoft.NET 2.0 that deserializes a XML back to a typed object, connects dyanimcally to a web service using ServiceDescription and binds the deserialized typed object to the WebMethod inbound. The XML prior to serialization looks like below <completion_time>12:19:38</completion_time> on the wire when communicating to the web service looks like below <completion_time>12:19:38.0000000-04:00</completion_time> with the timezone appended to the end. This is causing the time to be read differently when communicating to a web service at a different timezone. is there anyway to let XmlSerializer skip the timezone? Or any other known workarounds?

Before I go away and reinvent the wheel, is this something that has already been addressed as either a piece of technology or library, or even just a design pattern.
