• Rails 2.3.14 setting expire_after for sessions is ignored

  I have next config in my environment.rb: config.action_controller.session_store = :cookie_store config.action_controller.session = { :expire_after => 14.days, :domain => DOMAIN, :session_key => '_session', :secret => 'some_string' } Setting session_store to active_record_store or mem_cache_store didn't help. Also i've tried just setting cookie from controller (with all founded options for expire): cookies[:test] = { :value => 'test' , :expires => 3600.to_i.from_now.utc } In both ways all sessions and cookies are deleted after closing browser window - they are only for browser session. I've tried almost all variants founded in the Internet - no luck( My config is: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, rails 2.3.14, ruby Enterprise Edition 1.8.7, Phusion Passenger version 3.0.11 and Nginx compiled by Phusion Passenger. I've an options that it's Nginx not allowing setting some headers but also didn't find any solution. Any help appreciated! Thanks UPD. i've tried to put all configs for sessions to config/initializers/session_store.rb - nothing changed. i have a feeling that it's not a rails problem. may it be phusion + nginx error? i don't even know how to check where the problem is.

• My Rails session is getting reset when I have concurrent requests

  I think I might be misunderstanding something about Rails sessions, so please bear with me, I might not be phrasing my question the best way. I'm working on an iPhone app with a Ruby on Rails backend. I have a web view which by default goes to the index action of one controller (and uses sessions), and in the background a bunch of API calls going to a different controller (and which don't need to use sessions). The problem is, the sessions set by my web view seem to be overwitten by the API calls. My staging server is pretty slow, so there's lots of time for the requests to overlap each other - what I see in the logs is basically this: Request A (first controller) starts. Session is empty. Request B (second controller) starts. Session is empty. Request A finishes. Request A has done authentication, and stored the user ID in the session. Session contains user ID. Request B finishes. Session is empty. Request C starts. Session is empty - not what I want. Now, the strange thing is that request B should NOT be writing anything to the session. I do have before and after filters which READ from the session - things like: user = User.find_by_id(session[:id]) or logger.debug session.inspect and if I remove all of those, then everything works as expected - session contents get set by request A, and they're still there when request C starts. So. I think I'm missing something about how sessions work. Why would reading from the session overwrite it? Should I be accessing it some other way? Am I completely on the wrong track and the problem is elsewhere? Thank you for any insights!

• avoiding code duplication in Rails 3 models

  I'm working on a Rails 3.1 application where there are a number of different enum-like models that are stored in the database. There is a lot of identical code in these models, as well as in the associated controllers and views. I've solved the code duplication for the controllers and views via a shared parent controller class and the new view/layout inheritance that's part of Rails 3. Now I'm trying to solve the code duplication in the models, and I'm stuck. An example of one of my enum models is as follows: class Format < ActiveRecord::Base has_and_belongs_to_many :videos attr_accessible :name validates :name, presence: true, length: { maximum: 20 } before_destroy :verify_no_linked_videos def verify_no_linked_videos unless self.videos.empty? self.errors[:base] << "Couldn't delete format with associated videos." raise ActiveRecord::RecordInvalid.new self end end end I have four or five other classes with nearly identical code (the association declaration being the only difference). I've tried creating a module with the shared code that they all include (which seems like the Ruby Way), but much of the duplicate code relies on ActiveRecord, so the methods I'm trying to use in the module (validate, attr_accessible, etc.) aren't available. I know about ActiveModel, but that doesn't get me all the way there. I've also tried creating a common, non-persistent parent class that subclasses ActiveRecord::Base, but all of the code I've seen to accomplish this assumes that you won't have subclasses of your non-persistent class that do persist. Any suggestions for how best to avoid duplicating these identical lines of code across many different enum models?

• Sharing rails fragments between formats

  Hi I'm toying with mobile_fu and want to share some fragments between the different views. E.g. views/ item/ view.html.erb view.mobile.rb shared/ _common.erb In both view.html.erb and view.mobile.erb I want to share the same fragment '_common.erb' without having to specify the format (should you ever have to specify the format inside a fragment? It doesn't seem like The Rails Way?). Let's say for arguments's sake it's because it's in a helper or whatever -- the point is that I need to share fragments in a 'well-defined and Railsy way' across formats. Let's take this fairly innocuous snippet <% render :fragment => 'shared/common' %> I've tried 3 file name conventions: _common.html.erb only works for html /item/view/xx fails with 'shared/_common.erb not found') however _common.erb fails for html and works for mobile (maybe mobile_fu is doing something wacky?) -- same error as for .html.erb version above _common.rhtml does work for both I'm thinking that: that rhtml works for both is a legacy hack and I'm loathe to rename all the shared fragments .rhtml to get the behaviour I want.   I am following Ryan Bates's tutorial on Rails 3 ActionMailer. I generate the mailer in terminal and then establish a setup_mail.rb under config/initializers. • Can't store UTF-8 in RDS despite setting up new Parameter Group using Rails on Heroku

  I'm setting up a new instance of a Rails(2.3.5) app on Heroku using Amazon RDS as the database. I'd like to use UTF-8 for everything. Since RDS isn't UTF-8 by default, I set up a new Parameter Group and switched the database to use that one, basically per this. Seems to have worked: SHOW VARIABLES LIKE '%character%'; character_set_client utf8 character_set_connection utf8 character_set_database utf8 character_set_filesystem binary character_set_results utf8 character_set_server utf8 character_set_system utf8 character_sets_dir /rdsdbbin/mysql-5.1.50.R3/share/mysql/charsets/ Furthermore, I've successfully setup Heroku to use the RDS database. Now, I enter a comment through the form in the app: "Úbe® ƒåiL", but in the database I've got "Úbe® Æ’Ã¥iL" It looks fine when Rails loads it back out of the database and it is rendered to the page, so whatever it is doing one way, it's undoing the other way. If I look at the RDS database in Sequel Pro, it looks fine if I set the encoding to "UTF-8 Unicode via Latin 1". So it seems Latin-1 is sneaking in there somewhere. Somebody must have done this before, right? What am I missing?

• Rails RESTful routs without #new, rspec trouble

  I'm currently writing a Rails app, and hit a somewhat strange quirk. I have a controller PermissionsController, which is mainly for display purposes at the moment. So my routing is locked down: map.resources :permissions, :only => [:index, :show] Unfortunately, when writing the tests, one of the routing tests fails: it "does not recognize #new" do { :get => "/permissions/new" }.should_not be_routable end with the error: Expected 'GET /permissions/new' to fail, but it routed to {"action"=>"show", "id"=>"new", "controller"=>"permissions"} instead Obviously, the #show action's route is matching with /permissions/:id, which also gives the expected error Couldn't find Permission with ID=new if you actually browse to that URL. This is not a serious error, as it is correctly raising an exception with the bad :id parameter, but it's kind of ugly. Is there any way to actually make Rails reject that route? Some trick in the routing options that I'm missing? I suppose I should just leave that test out and ignore it, or maybe remove the whole RESTful idea altogether and go back to a simpler map.connect 'permissions/:id' style. I strongly suspect I'll be expanding this in the future, though, and kind of wanted to keep my controllers consistent with each other. Just having to add occasional :only or :except rules made routes.rb nice and clean...

• Rails dealing with blank params at controller level

  I have a User model: class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_secure_password # validation lets users update accounts without entering password validates :password, presence: { on: :create }, allow_blank: { on: :update } validates :password_confirmation, presence: { if: :password_digest_changed? } end I also have a password_reset_controller: def update # this is emailed to the user by the create action - not shown @user=User.find_by_password_reset_token!(params[:id]) if @user.update_attributes(params[:user]) # user is signed in if password and confirmation pass validations sign_in @user redirect_to root_url, :notice => "Password has been reset." else flash.now[:error] = "Something went wrong, please try again." render :edit end end Can you see the problem here? A user can submit a blank a password/confirmation and rails will sign them in, because the User model allows blank on update. It's not a security concern, since an attacker would still need access to a user's email account before they could get anywhere near this action, but my problem is that a user submitting 6 blank chars would be signed in, and their password would not be changed for them, which could lead to confusion later on. So, I've come up with the following solution, and I'd like to check if there's a better way of doing it, before I push to production: def update @user=User.find_by_password_reset_token!(params[:id]) # if user submits blank password, add an error, and render edit action if params[:user][:password].blank? @user.errors.add(:password_digest, "can't be blank.") render :edit elsif @user.update_attributes(params[:user]) sign_in @user redirect_to root_url, :notice => "Password has been reset." else flash.now[:error] = "Something went wrong, please try again." render :edit end end Should I be checking for nil as well as blank?   Hi everybody... I've been thinking about this a long time now but i wanna hear your opinion because i always received the ebst answers here. So in advance... thank you guys. Right now i have to make this decision: Shift a prototype webservice to production quality. Choose either Ruby or PHP... (Background: A friend of mine is joining the project and prefers rails) I've already played around a bit with RoR (only basic stuff) but i am really disappointed about the documentation of Rails and Ruby. In relation to PHP i find only fragments or hard to use references. At the end i am a bit scared. I dont wanna waste my time realizing that i am not capable of doing s.th in Ruby what i could with PHP. Maybe only because i am too stupid and don't find a proper explanation ;-) Did anyone experience this shift and can tell me how easy/hard it was to switch from PHP to Ruby? E.G. would you recommend programming it in PHP and using MVC as a base pattern? Thanks for your opinion!!!

• Apache's AuthDigestDomain and Rails Distributed Asset Hosts

  I've got a server I'm in the process of setting up and I'm running into an Apache configuration problem that I can not get around. I've got Apache 2.2 and Passenger serving a Rails app with distributed asset hosting. This is the feature of Rails that lets you serve your static assets from assets0.example.com, assets1, assets2, and so on. The site needs to be passworded until launch. I've set up HTTP authentication on the site using Apache's mod_auth_digest. In my configuration I'm attempting to use the AuthDigestDomain directive to allow access to each of the asset URLs. The problem is, it doesn't seem to be working. I get the initial prompt for the password when I load the page, but then the first time it loads an asset from one of the asset URLs, I get prompted a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th time. In some browsers, I get prompted for every single resource on the page. I'm hoping that this is only a problem of how I'm specifying my directives and not a limitation of authorization in Apache itself. • Weird Rails database errors

  I've had some trouble getting my Rails app to connect to PostgreSQL so I decided to just say screw it and use SQLite for now. (I'm using the tutorial here: http://guides.rubyonrails.org/getting_started.html) I started a BRAND NEW, fresh Rails app from this tutorial. When I visit my app in the browser after deleting public/index.html, I get this the first time: Please install the pg adapter: `gem install activerecord-pg-adapter` (no such file to load -- active_record/connection_adapters/pg_adapter) That's odd to me because I'm not mentioning PostgreSQL anywhere. Here's my databases.yml: # SQLite version 3.x # gem install sqlite3-ruby (not necessary on OS X Leopard) development: adapter: sqlite3 database: db/development.sqlite3 pool: 5 timeout: 5000 # Warning: The database defined as "test" will be erased and # re-generated from your development database when you run "rake". # Do not set this db to the same as development or production. test: adapter: sqlite3 database: db/test.sqlite3 pool: 5 timeout: 5000 production: adapter: sqlite3 database: db/production.sqlite3 pool: 5 timeout: 5000 To make things more confusing, I only get that "pg adapter" error on the first load. For every subsequent page request, I get this error: ActiveRecord::ConnectionNotEstablished So even though I removed all mention of PostgreSQL, I'm still getting errors. What could be going on?

• Handling Email Bouncebacks in Rails

  Hi there, I've built a very basic CRM system for my rails app that allows me to send weekly user activity digests with custom text and create multi-part marketing messages which I can configure and send through a basic admin interface. I'm happy with what I've put together on the send-side of things (minus the fact that I haven't tried to volume test its capabilities), but I'm concerned about how to handle bounce-backs. I came across this plugin with associated scripts: http://github.com/kovyrin/bounces-handler I'm using Google Apps to handle my mail and really don't know enough about Perl to want to mess with the above plugin - I have enough headaches. I'm looking for a simple solution for processing bounce-backs in Rails. All my email will go out from an address like this which will be managed in Google Apps: "[email protected]." What's the best workflow for this? Can anyone post an example solution they're using keeping in mind the fact that I'm using Google Apps for the mail? Any guidance, links, or basic workflow best-practices to handle this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! -A

• Rails exit controller after rendering

  I have an action in my controller that I am having trouble with. This is my first rails app, so I'm not sure of the best practices surrounding rails. I have a model called Group and a few actions that go in it's controller. I have written a test that should cause the controller to render an error in JSON because of an invalid Group ID. Instead of rendering and exiting, it looks like the controller is rendering and continuing to execute. Test test 'should not remove group because of invalid group id' do post(:remove, {'group_id' => '3333'}) response = JSON.parse(@response.body) assert_response :success assert_equal 'Success', response['message'] end Controller action # Post remove # group_id def remove if((@group = Group.find_by_id(params[:group_id])) == nil) render :json => { :message => "group_id not found" } end @group.destroy if(!Group.exists?(@group)) render :json => { :message => "Success" } else render :json => { :errors => @group.errors.full_messages } end end In the controller, the first if statement executes: render :json => { :message => "group_id not found" } but @group.destroy is still being executed. This seems counter-intuitive to me, I would think that the render method should exit the controller. Why is the controller not exiting after render is called? The purpose of this block of code is to recover gracefully when no record can be found with the passed in ID. Is this the correct way of doing something like this?

• Rails active record association problem

  Hello, I'm new at active record association in rails so i don't know how to solve the following problem: I have a tables called 'meetings' and 'users'. I have correctly associated these two together by making a table 'participants' and set the following association statements: class Meeting < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :participants, :dependent => :destroy has_many :users, :through => :participants and class Participant < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :meeting belongs_to :user and the last model class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :participants, :dependent => :destroy At this point all is going well and i can access the user values of attending participants of a specific meeting by calling @meeting.users in the normal meetingshow.html.erb view. Now i want to make connections between these participants. Therefore i made a model called 'connections' and created the columns of 'meeting_id', 'user_id' and 'connected_user_id'. So these connections are kinda like friendships within a certain meeting. My question is: How can i set the model associations so i can easily control these connections? I would like to see a solution where i could use @meeting.users.each do |user| user.connections.each do |c| <do something> end end I tried this by changing the model of meetings to this: class Meeting < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :participants, :dependent => :destroy has_many :users, :through => :participants has_many :connections, :dependent => :destroy has_many :participating_user_connections, :through => :connections, :source => :user Please, does anyone have a solution/tip how to solve this the rails way?

• How can I make my browser(s) finish AJAX requests instead of stopping them when I switch to another page?

  I usually need to deal with things on a page right before switching to yet another page, this ranges from "liking / upvoting a comment or post" up to "an important action" and doesn't always come with feedback on whether the action actually proceeded. This is a huge problem! I assume the action to proceed once I start the particular AJAX request, but because I switch to another page it didn't actually happen because the AJAX request got aborted. This has left me several times with coming back to the page and seeing my action didn't take place at all; to give you an idea how bad this is, this even happened once when commenting on Super User! Is there a way to tell my browser to not drop these AJAX connections but simply let them finish?

I have no problem to bind data to the 3 CascadingDropDown but my problem is to rebind CascadingDropDown. simply what I want to do is to select a record from Gridview which has the selected values for the CascadingDropDown that I want to pass then rebind the CascadingDropDown with selected value. • Fixing Chrome&rsquo;s AJAX Request Caching Bug

  I recently had to make a set of web pages restore their state when the user arrived on them after clicking the browser’s back button. The pages in question had various content loaded in response to user actions, which meant I had to manually get them back into a valid state after the page loaded. I got hold of the page’s data in a JavaScript ViewModel using a JQuery ajax call, then iterated over the properties, filling in the fields as I went. I built in the ability to describe dependencies between inputs to make sure fields were filled in in the correct order and at the correct time, and that all worked nicely. To make sure the browser didn’t cache the AJAX call results I used the JQuery’s cache: false option, and ASP.NET MVC’s OutputCache attribute for good measure. That all worked perfectly… except in Chrome. Chrome insisted on retrieving the data from its cache. cache: false adds a random query string parameter to make the browser think it’s a unique request – it made no difference. I made the AJAX call a POST – it made no difference. Eventually what I had to do was add a random token to the URL (not the query string) and use MVC routing to deliver the request to the correct action. • Website. AJAX and FIREFOX problems. I dont think Firefox likes ajax..?

  Working on an AJAX website (HTML,CSS,JavaScript, AJAX, PHP, MySQL). I have multiple javascript functions which take rows from mysql, wrap them in html tags, and embed them in the HTML (the usual usage of AJAX). THE PROBLEM: Everything is working perfect, except when I run the site with Firefox (for once its not InternetExplorer causing the trouble). The site is currently in the developmental stage, so its offline, but running on the localhost (WampServer, apache, Windows XP SP3,VISTA,7). All other cross-browser conflicts have been removed, and works perfectly on all major browsers including IE, Chrome, Opera and Safari, but I get absolutely nothing from the HTTPRequest (AJAX) if the browser is Firefox. All browsers have the latest versions. • Why won't my AJAX controls work? (and ajax for .net 4 not working?)

  I'm totally new to ajax. I'm using VS2005. I just downloaded .NET framework 4 and so then I downloaded ajaxcontroltoolkit.binary.net4 via [http://ajaxcontroltoolkit.codeplex.com/releases/view/43475] (as opposed to ajaxcontroltoolkit.binary.net35 for .NET 3.5), but when I try to load the ajaxcontroltoolkit.dll into my toolbox (as said in the tutorials), I get the following error msg: "'C:......\ajaxcontroltoolkit.dll' is not a microsoft .NET module." First question: Why is this happening? So I tried downloading the "Recommended" ajaxcontroltoolkit.binary.net35, and it accepted the .dll file and loaded all my controls. So, I started a new website and tried to check out a combobox, and it displays, but IE is giving the follow error msg: 'Sys.Extended.UI.PositioningMode.BottomLeft' is null or not an object.' 2nd question: Why is this happening? • Ajax/PHP contact form not able to send mail

  The funny thing is it did work for one evening. I contacted my host, and they are saying there's no reason it should not be working. I have also attempted to test it in Firebug, but it seemed to be sending. And I specifically put the email address (hosted in my domain) on my email safe list, so that is not the culprit either. Would anyone here take a look at it for me? I'd be so grateful. On click, the button submits data to a php file and then changes text and blurs according to the response from php file. The blur function and change text function in col5 is working well. But the change text function in button got really buggy. The button text should change accordingly. the text of button "Activate" should change to "Inactivate" and the text of button "Inactivate" should change to "Activate" on click / successful submission.. This is not working..   I am using devise with wicked to create a sign up wizard, but I am unsure about a problem I am having creating profiles. After a user provides their email & password they are forwarded to a step to create a profile based on whether they have specified they are a shipper or carrier. However I am unsure what the code should be in the controller and the forms to generically create a profile.
