  • How can I launch a GUI session on a remote Ubuntu Desktop via SSH from a non-GUI Linux shell?

    I am setting up a test environment, made up of various Linux boxes, and I have the need to launch an instance of Firefox on a remote machine via ssh. The remote machine has Ubuntu Desktop (11) and Firefox installed. The source machine is a Continuous Integration server and it creates an ssh session to the remote machine from a non-GUI environment. It then runs a script, which tries to launch Firefox on the remote machine. However, since the ssh session is a from a non-GUI environment, there is no display. Is it possible to have a headless X-windows display? i.e. a virtual display in the remote environment for Firefox to run in? What options do I have?

  • Run init.d script in the context of the current user session.

    I'd like to run a script in init.d (on Fedora) in the context of the user session I'm logging in as. I have a script called keyboard_deadkeys I wrote to set some deadkeys on my keyboard. The script is very simple: #!/bin/bash /usr/bin/xmodmap /home/julie/keymappings I put it in the directory /etc/init.d so it will run at boot time. It is also in /etc/rc.d/init.d I changed the permissions to a+rwx for good measure. When I boot; the deadkeys aren't set in the user's session. When I then run the script manually; the keys are set. How can I rectify this?

  • Hosting a website on Heroku.... I know how to, but im running into problems!

    I'm starting to learn more on the back-end scale of programing. Recently I started up Heroku for the second or third time. This time I actually installed the Git update to my Mac and installed Heroku in the terminal. I wanted to upload a static html site with the sinatra gem. Everything worked out fine inside the terminal, though I added sinatra after I got everything working and the file with the site hooked up to Heroku. In my logs I did see that I was missing the sinatra gem, so I installed it. My site contains both the proper app.rb and config.ru files. I have nothing showing up online. Just a blank screen! Contacting Heroku on this problem has been very difficult.     basically, if cookeis are disabled on the client, im wondering if this... dim newCookie = New HttpCookie("cookieName", "cookieValue") newCookie.Expires = DateTime.Now.AddDays(1) response.cookies.add(newCookie) notice i set a date, so it should be stored on disk, if cookies are disabled does asp.net automatically store this cookie as a session cookie (which is a cookie that lasts in browser memory until the user closes the browser, if i am not mistaken).... OR does asp.net not add the cookie at all (anywhere) in which case i would have to re-add the cookie to the collection without the date (which stores as a session cookie)... of course, this would require me doing the addition of a cookie twice... perhaps the second time unnecessarily if it is being stored in browsers memory anyway... im just trying not to store it twice as it's just bad code!! any ideas if i need to write another line or not?   • How do you reach a "flow" state while programming?

    I'm not talking about program flow, but as in the state of working called flow, the state where you can get great work done the most effectively. I find that my current work environment while good in many ways does not allow me to get into a good state of mind for writing code most of the time (my job includes many other functions). If it's critical to get something done I'll often put on head-phones with classical music and try to drown out the office noise around me (and discourage co-workings from asking me questions). I am best able to get work done late in the evening when the house is quite and I've been thinking about the project for most of the day. What tricks have you found when working in less then perfect office environments?

  • How to disable UI control based on domain object's state?

    Here's my problem. I have a somewhat complex domain object, which, depending on its state, responds to certain actions. I think the state pattern is pretty much the solution for that. However, I need to display which actions are possible at any moment in the UI. Ex: The domain object is an audio player. Some songs can't be skipped (like ads), so I need to disable the "next" and "previous" buttons in the GUI so the user have some kind of feedback of which action he can execute. I've looked at Swing's Action class (note: this is not a Java project), but I think I would need to keep every Actions in my domain object class (audio player), so it can enable or disable them depending on its own state (thus, affecting the UI). Is it the way to do it?

  • When is it appropriate to do interaction based testing as opposed to state based testing?

    Hi, When I use Easymock(or a similar mocking framework) to implement my unit tests, I'm forced to do interaction-based testing (as I don't get to assert on the state of my dependencies. Or am I mistaken?). On the other hand if I use a hand written stub (instead of using easymock) I can implement state based testing. I'm quite unclear if I want to go with interaction based testing or state based testing. I'm biased and I want to use Easymock, but I'm not sure if there would be any side-effects that I may have to face in the future. Can anyone please throw some light on this? Thanks in advance!

One approach that I can think of, without modifying the entity is via "auditing" all the inserts/updates, as below, the rollback information captures the data just before the updates/modifications on the entity, so that it can be applied in an order when you need to revert.Please note that changing the entity's schema, is not an option.   • In Rails, what could cause a user to have another user's session?

    I have a Rails application using with an authentication system using Restful Authentication without any modification. Users have reported finding themselves logged in as the wrong user. In at least one case it was on their very first page view, never having logged in before. Is it possible their session ids are getting mixed up? Would switching to CookieStore make it impossible for this to happen since no session data is stored on the server this way? I suspect the problem is related to Passenger but I don't know where to start debugging this. Its only happened about 4 times in several months of being live so its virtually impossible to reproduce.     Hey guys, The website that I'm building includes a section where two users can interact. I think I know how to do most of it, except the actual session sharing part. I'm using Ruby on Rails & Javascript (jquery), and I've got user login and session management all working okay. Would the best way to create a shared session be to have a SharedSession model, with accompanying database table, with participant1ID, participant2ID etc? Is there a better way? I'm wondering how dangerous it is to leave the session key store secret in source control while the app is live. If it's dangerous, how do people usually handle this problem? I'd guess that it's easiest to just move the string to a text file that's ignored by the SCM, and read it in later. Just for clarity, I'm talking about this: # Your secret key for verifying cookie session data integrity. # If you change this key, all old sessions will become invalid! # Make sure the secret is at least 30 characters and all random, # no regular words or you'll be exposed to dictionary attacks.
