  Can I somehow force a derived class to always call the overridden methods base? public class BaseClass { public virtual void Update() { if(condition) { throw new Exception("..."); // Prevent derived method to be called } } } And then in a derived class : public override void Update() { base.Update(); // Forced call // Do any work } I've searched and found a suggestion to use a non-virtual Update() but also a protected virtual UpdateEx(). It just doesn't feel very neat, isn't there any better way? I hope you get the question and I am sorry for any bad English.

Can I optimize this behavior (reading once per day or session)? maybe to store a global variable and check the update date?

  Hi guys: In ASP.NET 3.5, we suspect a delegate triggering by a "Timer" will block other method calls. From logs, some function calls will wait for the finishing of the delegate and continue to work. Is it true? If yes, what workaround can I do?   I've been trying to call the overloaded table::scan_index(std::string, ...) member function without success. For the sake of clarity, I have stripped out all non-relevant code. I have a class called table which has an overloaded/templated member function named scan_index() in order to handle strings as a special case. class table : boost::noncopyable { public: template <typename T> void scan_index(T val, std::function<bool (uint recno, T val)> callback) { // code } void scan_index(std::string val, std::function<bool (uint recno, std::string val)> callback) { // code } }; Then there is a hitlist class which has a number of templated member functions which call table::scan_index(T, ...) class hitlist { public: template <typename T> void eq(uint fieldno, T value) { table* index_table = db.get_index_table(fieldno); // code index_table->scan_index<T>(value, [&](uint recno, T n)->bool { // code }); } }; And, finally, the code which kicks it all off: hitlist hl; // code hl.eq<std::string>(*fieldno, p1.to_string()); The problem is that instead of calling table::scan_index(std::string, ...), it calls the templated version. I have tried using both overloading (as shown above) and a specialized function template (below), but nothing seems to work. After staring at this code for a few hours, I feel like I'm missing something obvious. If any colors are matched it converts them backwards into their numeric representation to evaluate against obj.color, but this feels wrong.

Everyone suggested for _ in range(n): foo() but I wanted to try and code a different solution using a function decorator. How can I fix this?

  It's been a few years since I've been heavily into Java. Coming back to it I'm seeing this pattern all over the place: ratingBar.setOnRatingBarChangeListener(new OnRatingBarChangeListener() { public void onRatingChanged(RatingBar ratingBar, float rating, boolean fromUser) { // do work } }); This looks more like Functional programming to me. It's a nice pattern but how is it possible to pass a method like this? In the old days a class was a class, and once compiled there was little you could do to it. My questions are: Can anyone let me know what this pattern is called? How can I write a class that can be instantiated in this way. Are there any other useful examples of functional patterns that have made their way into Java? What do I need to Google to read more about this? Thanks.

• What would be my best MySQL Synchronization method?

  We're moving a social media service to be on separate data centers with global load balancing, as our other hosting provider's entire data center went down. Twice. This means that both websites need to be synchronized in some sense -- I'm less worried about the code of the pages, that's easy enough to sync, but they need to have the same database data. From my research on SO, it seems MySQL Replication is a good option, but the MySQL manual, for scaling out, says that its best when there are far more reads then there are writes/updates: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/replication-solutions-scaleout.html In our case, it's about equal. We're getting around 200-300 thousand requests a day right now, and we can grow rapidly. Every request is both a read and write request. What would be the best method or tool to handle this?
