  • Idiots Guide to Setting Up Myth TV?

    - by Jared
I want to build a MythTV back end. I don't want to compile things if I can help it, and I'd like to know what hardware will work with the cable system in the US. Are there any guides to building a MythTV box? I've found several but they all appear to be three or so years out of date and I have no clue how Linux hardware support has changed since then.

  • Mapped commands in VIM starting with a Comma

    - by Boldewyn
In my .vimrc, I defined this line: map ,ps <Esc>:!ps<Space>-a<CR> The mapping is set (which I controlled via :verbose map ,ps while inside vim). There is nothing else mapped to the comma. However, if I type the command in command mode, nothing is displayed in the status bar, the comma is ignored, the p movement and the s insert are triggered. (I.e., VIM reacts, as if there was no command ,ps.) Is there any magic that I have overlooked in enabling comma-started mapped commands?

  • starting nginx via upstart

    - by Chiggsy
Background: DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu DISTRIB_RELEASE=10.04 DISTRIB_CODENAME=lucid DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 10.04 LTS" I've built nginx, and I'd like to use upstart to start it: nginx upstart script from the site: description "nginx http daemon" start on runlevel 2 stop on runlevel 0 stop on runlevel 1 stop on runlevel 6 console owner exec /usr/sbin/nginx -c /etc/nginx/nginx.conf -g "daemon off;" respawn I get "unknown job" when i try to use initctl to run it, which I just learned apparently means there is an error, ( what's wrong with "Error" to describe errors?) Can someone point me in the right direction ? I've read the documentation , as it is, and it seems kind of sparse for a SysV init replacement... but whatever just need to add this job to the list, run it, and get on with what's left of my life... Any tips? EDIT: initctl version init (upstart 0.6.5)

  • Automatically starting svnserve on Snow Leopard

    - by Cleggy
    I have installed Subversion onto my iMac running Snow Leopard, but am having trouble getting svnserve to start up automatically. As I understand it (I'm still fairly green with OSX), the best way to do that is to utilize launchd. To that end, I have created the following .plist file in the /Library/LaunchDaemons folder. If I use launchctl to execute this file, svnserve starts as expected, but it doesn't automatically start when the system starts up or I log in. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd"> <plist version="1.0"> <dict> <key>Disabled</key> <false/> <key>Label</key> <string>org.tigris.subversion.svnserve</string> <key>UserName</key> <string>Dave</string> <key>ProgramArguments</key> <array> <string>/opt/subversion/bin/svnserve</string> <string>--inetd</string> <string>--root=/Users/Shared/SVNrep</string> </array> <key>ServiceDescription</key> <string>Subversion Standalone Server</string> <key>Sockets</key> <dict> <key>Listeners</key> <array> <dict> <key>SockFamily</key> <string>IPv4</string> <key>SockServiceName</key> <string>svn</string> <key>SockType</key> <string>stream</string> </dict> <dict> <key>SockFamily</key> <string>IPv6</string> <key>SockServiceName</key> <string>svn</string> <key>SockType</key> <string>stream</string> </dict> </array> </dict> <key>inetdCompatibility</key> <dict> <key>Wait</key> <false/> </dict> </dict> </plist> If anyone here could provide any suggestions as to how to get this to work, I'd really appreciate it.

  • Error while starting web application.

    - by Lalit
0 When you right-click a Web site in the Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in, and then you click Start, the Web site does not start and you receive the following error message: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. What have to do. To resolve this issue i got this solution form link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/890015 As: You must use the Netstat.exe utility at the command line to see if another process is using port 80 or port 443. But how to ensure that is these Ip are in use or not ? in terms of status ? What should its status ? Second solution is : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\HTTP\Parameters\ListenOnlyList. But this key is not found .

  • Debian - starting UFW (Uncomplicated Firewall) before network interfaces are operational

    - by Tomasz Zielinski
I want to install UFW on Debian Lenny. Everything looks straightforward except that I don't know where to plug UFW startup script so that it configures iptables before hax0rs can break in. I've reviewed runlevel directories and in /etc/rc0.d, /etc/rc6.d and /etc/rcS.d there are items like these: S35networking -> ../init.d/networking S36ifupdown -> ../init.d/ifupdown Runlevel 0 and 6 are for shutdown and reboot so I guess nothing should be changed there, but runlevel S advertises itself (in README) like something for me: The scripts in this directory whose names begin with an 'S' are executed once when booting the system, even when booting directly into single user mode. The following sequence points are defined at this time: * After the S40 scripts have executed, all local file systems are mounted and networking is available. All device drivers have been initialized. (What bothers me is that both rc0/6.d and rcS.d point to the same networking and ifupdown scripts, but after looking at sources I believe those scripts are smart enough to figure out where to start and where to stop networking.) Now, I think that I should plug my /lib/ufw/ufw-init into /etc/rcS.d, with priority higher that the one of ifupdown and networking, i.e. <= 38 for my /etc/rcS.d. Am I right in this "analysis" ?

  • Starting nginx with systemctl fails, but running the command manually doesn't

    - by Ivan
On Arch Linux, for some reason, when I try to start nginx with the command "systemctl start nginx", it fails, with this being the output of "systemctl status nginx": Loaded: loaded (/etc/systemd/system/nginx.service; enabled) Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since Wed 2013-10-30 16:22:17 EDT; 5s ago Process: 9835 ExecStop=/usr/bin/chroot --userspec=http:http /home/nginx /usr/bin/nginx -g pid /run/nginx.pid; -s quit (code=exited, status=126) Process: 3982 ExecStart=/usr/bin/chroot --userspec=http:http /home/nginx /usr/bin/nginx -g pid /run/nginx.pid; daemon on; master_process on; (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS) Process: 10967 ExecStartPre=/usr/bin/chroot --userspec=http:http /home/nginx /usr/bin/nginx -t -q -g pid /run/nginx.pid; daemon on; master_process on; (code=exited, status=126) Main PID: 3984 (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS) CGroup: /system.slice/nginx.service ...but when I run /usr/bin/chroot --userspec=http:http /home/nginx /usr/bin/nginx -t -q -g "pid /run/nginx.pid; daemon on; master_process on;" and then /usr/bin/chroot --userspec=http:http /home/nginx /usr/bin/nginx -g "pid /run/nginx.pid; daemon on; master_process on;" as root, all it does is return a warning, but works just fine: nginx: [warn] the "user" directive makes sense only if the master process runs with super-user privileges, ignored in /etc/nginx/nginx.conf:1 Why is it doing that?

  • Error starting Hyper-V VM

    - by Peter Bernier
I'm trying to start a VM on a new Hyper-V installation and I'm receiving the following error: The virtual machine could not be started because the hypervisor is not running. The following actions may help you resolve the problem: 1) Verify that the processor of the physical computer has a supported version of hardware-assisted virtualization. 2) Verify that hardware-assisted virtualization and hardware-assisted data execution protection are enabled in the BIOS of the physical computer. (If you edit the BIOS to enable either setting, you must turn off the power to the physical computer and then turn it back on. Resetting the physical computer is not sufficient.) 3) If you have made changes to the Boot Configuration Data store, review these changes to ensure that the hypervisor is configured to launch automatically. My machine supports virtualization at the hardware level and it is enabled in BIOS. Why am I receiving this error?

  • Outlook Search starting date

    - by Khalid Rahaman
I am having a problem with Outlook 2003 search on 2 desktops - 1 XP, 1 Windows 7. They are both connected to the same exchange 2007 server. There are several other users connected to the same server, inside the lan and outside using RPC none of whom are having this issue. When the user searches Outlook, search starts from the date Outlook OST file was created and then searches more recent items. The result is that if user is searching for some phrase, e.g. "Blade" in their inbox folder, search results from months ago are returned first then the more recent results. If i delete the OST file and restart Outlook it rebuilds a new one, and resynchronizes normally, then search works normally again, however approximately 6 weeks later the problem will start again (see second paragraph). Anyone experience this ? Any Suggestions ?

  • Ubuntu 9.10 is not starting on netbook

    - by anonymous
I installed Ubuntu 9.10 onto my external hard drive cause it's cool to be able to borrow a friend's laptop and be able to have my entire system. It works on the 2 systems i tested it on: my desktop and my mom's laptop. I had to work on something earlier so i borrowed my friend's netbook. I started it up, chose Ubuntu 9.10.20 and it got to the Ubuntu loading screen with the 3 people holding hands right before user selection then it suddenly went black. Naturally, i freaked out because it wasn't my laptop. I held the power button down and reset the netbook but the screen was still black, it didn't even show the BIOS. I repeated the process without my hard drive, and it was still black without the BIOS showing up. I had to remove the battery, plug it to a power source, and power up to start the netbook up again. Can anyone tell me what happened?

  • Starting php-cgi at boot on mac os x 10.6.8

    - by nikhil
    I'm new to mac os, I have installed and configured nginx with php-fastcgi. I need to run this command in a terminal and keep that terminal open to access php files from my browser. php-cgi -b 127.0.0.1:9000 -q Here's the plist that I wrote by looking up sources on the internet <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd"> <plist version="1.0"> <dict> <key>Debug</key> <false/> <key>EnvironmentVariables</key> <dict> <key>PHP_FCGI_CHILDREN</key> <string>2</string> <key>PHP_FCGI_MAX_REQUESTS</key> <string>1000</string> </dict> <key>RunAtLoad</key> <true/> <key>KeepAlive</key> <true/> <key>UserName</key> <string>nikhil</string> <key>Label</key> <string>php-fastcgi</string> <key>ProgramArguments</key> <array> <string>/usr/bin/php-cgi</string> <string>-b 127.0.0.1:9000</string> <string>-q</string> </array> </dict> </plist> I'm loading it using launchctl load -w ~/Library/LaunchAgents/php-fastcgi.plist without any success, can anyone tell me how this can be done.

  • Dell Studio 1555 not starting up

    - by Abhishek
This is a 3-year-old laptop. I never had a big problem with it until now. I updated Kubuntu the night before yesterday. And Firefox got updated to version 18 and a few other related packages got updated. Then I shut down the laptop and restarted it, but it failed to start. I could hear the fan and the hard disk and the optical disk drive initialize. And the power button also lighted up. But there was no video - no POST or BIOS menu. I even opened the laptop up to the point when only the motherboard was the only thing attached to the base cover. I took it to the technician this evening. He checked it casually, and said that it might be a motherboard problem and will cost quite a bit to fix. Though he was not sure and said that he will give me a call after confirming the problem. Has anyone else had the same problem? What was it and what was the fix?

  • On Linux, why does directory tab completion add a \ to a path starting with ~

    - by crobar
On my work scientific linux 6.2 machine, I often start typing in a directory like below and use tab completion to finish it: ~/mydir But when I hit tab, it becomes e.g. \~/mydirectory/ With an extra forward slash at the start. Why is this, and can I prevent it? It's a pain because using cd etc. doesn't work with the extra slash, I have to start from the actual home directory which is something like /home/username/ On these PCs.

  • Working bootable CD now suddenly freezes at starting point

    - by xolstice
I have this strange problem with a bootable CD I created that uses floppy disk 1.44MB emulation. The PC originally worked with it just fine and booted from the CD several times from the prior occasions I used it. Now for some strange reason it decides to freeze at the point where it displays the following text on the screen and does not proceed further: Boot from ATAPI CD-ROM 1. FD 1.44MB System Type-(00) The other strange thing is that if I put in a Linux bootable installation CD, it boots that without any issues. Everytime I stick this custom made bootable CD in it pulls this freezing act. Has anyone experienced this or know how to correct the problem?

  • Starting Powerpoint show from ActiveX button

    - by Mike Shakespeare
I have several slide shows where topic related shows are launched from another show which acts as an index page. This worked fine in 2007 but now in Office 2010, whilst the show is still launched correctly from the index button, Powerpoint reopens on top of it, so now the show is hidden behind the Powerpoint startup page. Its very annoying, does anyone have any idea what is going on? Regards avondata

  • methods for preventing large scale data scraping from REST api

    - by Simon Kenyon Shepard
I know the immediate answer to this is going to be there is no 100% reliable method of doing this. But I'd like to create a question that details the different possibilities, the difficulty of implementing them and success rates. I would like to go from simple software ip/request speed analysis to high end sophisticated soft/hardware tools, e.g. neural networks. With a goal of predicting and preventing bogus requests and attempts to scrape the service. Many Thanks.
