  • How to install iodbc in Ubuntu 12.10

    - by Hanynowsky
I need to install the library iodbc (depends on libodbc2) in my Quantal machine. Yet there is creepy dependency problem. This was replaced somehow by unixodbc which I don't have, installed. Here is what I get when I try to install : sudo apt-get install libiodbc2-dev Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: libiodbc2-dev : Depends: libiodbc2 (= 3.52.7-2build2) but it is not going to be installed Depends: iodbc (= 3.52.7-2build2) but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. I can tell that iodbc conflicts with odbcinst. Yet, I cannot remove it due to the following: sudo apt-get remove odbcinst Reading package lists... After this operation, 126 MB disk space will be freed. Do you want to continue [Y/n]? Other info: Why do the "iodbc" and "libmyodbc" packages conflict with each other? The root problem is that I need to use a new feature introduced in the latest MySQL Workbench builds (DB Migration) which uses odbc for that matter. Here is what Mysql doc says about it : Linux The Migration Wizard uses iODBC as a driver manager for all of its ODBC connections in Linux. This may give you some troubles because most Linux distributions provide ODBC drivers compiled against unixODBC. This is another driver manager not supported by MySQL Workbench so you won’t be able to use those drivers unless you compile them against iODBC. Here’s what you should do. Make sure that you have iODBC installed. If you are using Debian, Ubuntu or another Debian based distro, type this command in your terminal: $ sudo apt-get install iodbc libiodbc2-dev libpq-dev libssl-dev For RPM based distros (RedHat, Fedora, etc.) type this command instead of the previous one: $ sudo yum install iodbc iodbc-dev libpqxx-devel openssl-devel Now we need to install the PostgreSQL ODBC drivers. Download the psqlODBC source tarball from here. Use the latest version available for download. As of this writing the latest version corresponds to the file psqlodbc-09.01.0200.tar.gz. Extract this tarball to a directory in your hard drive and open a terminal and cd into that directory. Type this in the terminal window: $ ./configure --with-iodbc --enable-pthreads $ make $ sudo make install Verify that you have the file psqlodbcw.so in the /usr/local/lib directory. • squid will not listen on specific IP

    - by Chris
I have a public subnet with squid installed. Let's say my subnet is from 1.2.3.2 to 1.2.4.254. When I set the following: http_port 50000 http_port 1.2.3.2:50000 it is working. But when I set: http_port 1.2.4.37:50000 it is not working. It is only working with my first public IP from my subnet. The error I get when it is not working is the following: commBind: Cannot bind socket FD 10 to 1.2.4.37:50000: (99) Cannot assign requested address What is wrong with my configuration? @Zoredache I have a dedicated server and the whole subnet is defined as IP Range. When I use only the port or the first IP and doing netstat -ntlp | grep 46555 I get the following: tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:50000 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 25532/(squid ) When I use my specific IP, then the netstat query will show nothing, as the server does not start. I don't want squid to listen on all or the first IP, it is just a specific one it should listen to.

  • how to package a unity lens app

    - by Asim
i'm new to ubuntu apps and launchpad. I've created a unity lenses app using quickly but i'm stuck on how to deploy it, i have two questions. I can create a deb file using quickly package but when i install it, i still need to manually restart unity and run the project using 'quickly run'. how can i get the package manager to do that on install so users can start using the lens straight away? I'm confused as to what i need to do to make my project be installed using a ppa. i've pushed my code to launchpad using bzr, i've created a ppa, openpgp key, ssh etc. i don't know what to do next? Any help would be appreciated. My project in launchpad is unity-lens-php Thanks

  • Why is there still so much offer for Perl programmers?

    - by user491444
A quick search on monster.com on different scripting languages resulted on Perl having much more job opportunities than Python and Ruby (in Europe, I didn't check for the rest of the world), and since I'm just a newbie programmer I was wondering why is this? I've read everywhere that Python and Ruby are much better languages, and much more organized. Having coded in python and php myself, Perl's code seems so alien to me. Anyways, sorry for my poor English, it's my second language, and this is not a critique on the Perl language, I was just wondering whether it's a good idea to learn it at this point or not.

  • does my machine configuration make sense?

    - by user1227914
i couldn't think of a better place to ask this question, so here it goes. we're putting together a dedicated server for a website that will initially host the web server and the mysql database. as the website grows, we'll move the database to a different server and this machine will eventually only server the actual website. so the question is ...does my configuration look okay? it's the first time i'm building a server from scratch so i want to make sure i don't combine components that don't fit or something. things like ..do the drives i picked work for the hot swap ..etc. what do you guys think? am i good to go with this configuration? :) Chassis: Supermicro SuperServer 6016T-MTHF (6x DDR3 SDRAM - ECC DIMM 240-pin, 2x LGA1366 Socket, Power Provided: 600 Watt, 4 (free) x hot-swap - 3.5") CPU: Intel BX80614E5620 Xeon E5620 Processor - 4 Core, 2.40GHz, LGA 1366, 5.86GT/s QPI 12MB Cache, 64-Bit, 80W, HyperThreading Memory: Crucial CT51272BB1339 4GB PC10600 DDR3 Memory - 1333MHz, ECC, Registered, 1x4096MB (possibly 3 or 4 of them) Hard Drives: Western Digital WD2002FAEX Caviar Black Hard Drive - 2TB, 3.5", SATA 6Gbps, 7200 RPM, 64MB (possibly 2 or 3). thank you very much for any professional advice :)

  • File `siunitx.sty' not found

    - by Mehdi
I switched to Ubuntu from windows today and got lots of problems. here is one of them. I installed Texlive and had trouble figuring out hove to add the PATH to .bashrc file. anyway, I figured it out using this link http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1359211.html but still I can not compile my latex code. I get such error: "File `siunitx.sty' not found" however, I think it is only the problem of not properly configured path. I would greatly appreciate if somebody help as I have already spent full half day on this but no success yet. Mehdi

  • Project Euler 5: (Iron)Python

    - by Ben Griswold
In my attempt to learn (Iron)Python out in the open, here’s my solution for Project Euler Problem 5.  As always, any feedback is welcome. # Euler 5 # http://projecteuler.net/index.php?section=problems&id=5 # 2520 is the smallest number that can be divided by each # of the numbers from 1 to 10 without any remainder. # What is the smallest positive number that is evenly # divisible by all of the numbers from 1 to 20? import time start = time.time() def gcd(a, b): while b: a, b = b, a % b return a def lcm(a, b): return a * b // gcd(a, b) print reduce(lcm, range(1, 20)) print "Elapsed Time:", (time.time() - start) * 1000, "millisecs" a=raw_input('Press return to continue')

  • What would be a best way to code a rudimentary LIMS?

    - by Sam
Hi, I hope that I am asking the right question at right place. If not, please do not hesitate to point me to the right place. I am working in a laboratory, where computers/programming/programmers are all used only as support. But I believe that we need better information organization and management. Given the diverse information generated in the lab I believe that we need some sort of Laboratory Information Management System. Is there a good starting point to do this? I am myself not a trained programmer. I can code reasonably well in python and R, and if necessary I can learn MySql, php.

  • Free Web hosting for web applications

    - by Jairo
Hi! Are there web sites that offers hosting of a web application that uses c++? I know that there are a lot of free web hosting solutions that offers hosting for regular web applications made with php, mysql, etc. I would like to upload a routing engine for my website. My application is a travel planner, and I have a custom routing engine that is made of c++. If there are free online Linux OS hosting that can act as a ordinary OS installation (which will be my best option), I would greatly appreciate if you can list them below. Thanks in advance.

  • Nginx's speed, and how to replicate it [migrated]

    - by Mediocre Gopher
I'm interested in this from more than an academic standpoint rather than a practical standpoint; I don't plan on creating a production webserver to compete with nginx. What I'm wondering is how exactly nginx is so fast. The top google response for this is this thread, but it merely links to a cryptic slideshow and a general covering of different io strategies. All other results seem to simply describe how fast nginx is, rather then the reason. I tried building a simple erlang server to try to compete with nginx, but to no avail; nginx won out. All my server does is spawn a new process for each request, uses that process to read the file to a socket, then closes the file and kills the thread. It's not complicated, but given erlang's lightweight processes and underlying aio structure I thought it would compete, but nginx still wins out by a consistent 300 ms average under a heavy stress test. What is nginx doing that my simple server isn't? My first thought would be keeping files in main memory instead of tossing them between requests, but the filesystem cache does this already so I didn't think it would make that great of difference. Am I wrong? Or is there something else that I'm missing?

  • I don't really understand "Backend/Serverside" when it comes to web-development?

    - by Mercfh
In the Web development world, what exactly do backend/server-side programmers do? I guess I don't really understand the whole concept. I've done the HTML/CSS layouts and website design and a little bit of SQL with PHP (still enhancing my skills, it's more of a side project for me). I've also done a small amount of JavaScript/JQuery. But I don't understand the "backend" work, such as the scripting languages (Rails/Python/etc) and such. What exactly do you "do" with them? Are there any books on the subject? I'm not even sure what it means. Is it kinda like what Web Application Frameworks do? Or not so much?

  • Bastion unexpectedly exits when I move my cursor

    - by user69358
I downloaded the Humble Indie Bundle V, mostly because my friend told me about how great Bastion was. When I first installed it, I was getting the seemingly common "black screen" error that most people got (fixed that half with this http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11992661). But I also have an error where every time I move my cursor, in any direction, any amount, the game closes instantly. I can use the keyboard no problem, but without fail, every time I move my mouse, it crashes. Does anyone know what might be causing this? Has anyone encountered anything like this before? I am worried it may be a hardware issue, but hoping someone might be able to help me out. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 on a Dell Studio 1558. Graphics card is the stock Intel graphics card, running on 4 GB of RAM.

  • How do I let programmers know something useful?

    - by Shane
Quite often I go through pain to discover how to do something useful, in this case how to get PHP running on Google App Engine without the 'resin.jar too big' problem, but I have nowhere to let people know. In this particular case, the web answers were incomplete, outdated or plain wrong. I could create a blog, but it's overkill. I just want let programmers know a quick solution/approach. I'm not sure it's the done thing to ask a question and then answer it. In short, it'd be nice to be able to just dump a sort of combined question/answer/snippet, then let others comment as usual, shoot it down, like it, whatever. How do the rest of you approach this? Cheers, Shane

  • Where do you search/look for game developers for an indie game startup?

    - by G.Campos
Hey there I just recently saw stackoverflow had a game dev sister site so here I am, wondering if you experienced fellows know where one can search/look for game developers for an indie game startup? In other words: I have a game idea which I've written down with as much detail as possible (so anyone else can understand how it works) and now I'm looking for a heavy php programmer with whom to pair up in order to go from idea to reality. I'm a front-end/interface designer and an intermediate programmer. I recognize my project requires heavy programming skills which I do not have as of today =) So, what websites, communities or places do you recommend I go look into? Where do good programmers interested in indie games go look for projects if they don't have their own? Thanks in advance G.Campos

  • Simple blogging software (WP replacement)

    - by jontes
I'm sorry if this is not the right place to ask this question, but I think it's certainly better than at stackoverflow.com. I'm planning to redesign my website and looking for a WordPress replacement for my blog. My requirements are: simple (I won't do a large, complicated website) and lucid well coded (OOP), extensions, templates, active development (not 3 years old) nice but temperate text editor (+images, links), tags and categories, page break easy integration with Flickr, Picasa and social networks technology: PHP and MySQL, not cloud service (like Posterous or Tumblr) Could you recommend me some blogging software which would meet these criteria?

  • Check/Monitor Amount of SQL Queries per Hour

    - by deathlock
My website is hosted on a shared hosting and I'd like to know how much SQL queries it is using per hour. I tried to navigate through cPanel and I find nothing to check or monitor the amount of SQL queries per hour. I tried to ask my host and they said it is not possible to do manually. However I found this http://forum.powweb.com/archive/index.php/t-49937.html and another one on Stackoverflow: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9842094/sql-how-can-i-get-the-number-of-executed-queries-per-database-or-hour-or And since this exists, I assume that it is actually possible. Problem is I can't execute that in my phpmyAdmin. Can someone here guide me through the process?

I know nothing of .Net. Are there any good tutorials or online books etc. which give a brief intro to the .Net environment (specifically C#, and specifically for the web)? I'm not even sure what I need to install. Visual Studio I guess, but what else? Anything special, or will VS do the trick?

Last time I bought a new computer (I build them myself) I got a motherboard that had really poor linux support for a long time. Specifically the audio. I had to wait months before the kernel supported the on board audio chipset. That is exactly the situation I'm trying to avoid this time around. I have some specific questions about "server motherboards" actually. I looked at a few models of server motherboards by intel, and some random models on newegg. I wasn't able to see much of a difference from regular desktop motherboard other than most had two sockets, and support for much more ram. These boards seem more popular with Linux users. Why? AMD and Intel both have server CPUs as well. Some question, what's the difference? To make this question more concrete, I was looking at this this motherboard. The main questions about it that I can't answer are: Can I get a motherboard without on board raid and audio? I wanted to get a hardware raid controller and a PCI audio card. I thought a server motherboard would be cheaper and not have these "extras", since who wants an audio card on a server? Where can I found out about Linux support for the components on this board? "Intel ICH10R", "Realtek ALC889", "Marvell 88E8056" I'm buying this computer to work as a Linux desktop for a lot of compiling, coding and audio/video work, but I don't want to rule out the possibility of installing windows and playing some games at one point. (even if the last game I got has been sitting in its box unopened for almost a year). Is it a good idea to buy a "server motherboard" and play games on it, or are desktop boards better value for this? The ultimate solution for me would be a motherboard that had GPL divers for onboard LAN, a single CPU socket, lots of PCI express and PCI. USB 3.0, and no fancy hard disk controllers since I'll be getting a separate one.

  • IPMI sdr entity 8 (memory module) only showing 3 records?

    - by thinice
I've got two Dell PE R710's - A has a single socket and 3 DIMMs in one bank B has both sockets and 6 (2 banks @ 3 DIMMs) filled The output from "ipmitool sdr entity 8" confuses me - according to the OpenIPMI documentation these are supposed to represent DIMM slots. Output from A (1 CPU, 3 DIMMS, 1 bank.): ~#: ipmitool sdr entity 8 Temp | 0Ah | ok | 8.1 | 27 degrees C Temp | 0Bh | ns | 8.1 | Disabled Temp | 0Ch | ucr | 8.1 | 52 degrees C Output from B (2 CPUs, 3 DIMMS in both banks, 6 total): ~#: ipmitool sdr entity 8 Temp | 0Ah | ok | 8.1 | 26 degrees C Temp | 0Bh | ok | 8.1 | 25 degrees C Temp | 0Ch | ucr | 8.1 | 51 degrees C Now, I'm starting to think this output isn't DIMMS themselves, but maybe a sensor for each bank and something else? (Otherwise, shouldn't I see 6 readings for the one with both banks active?) The CPU's aren't near 50 deg C, so I doubt the significantly higher reading is due to proximity - Is anyone able to explain what I'm seeing? Does the output from my ipmitool sdr entity 8 -v here on pastebin seem to hint at different sensors? The sensor naming conventions are poor - seems like a dell thing. Here is output from racadm racdump

  • Format numbers with css

    - by Luc M
Is it possible to format numbers using css ? When I have 7000000.00, I would like it displayed as 7 000 000.00 I know I could write a backend (php, perl...) function or a javascript function that could return the formatted number but... The numbers that I want to format are into a cell. I would like to have something like <td class="myformat">7000000.00</td> or <td><span class="myformat">7000000.00<span></td>

I've a virtual machine on VirtualBox 4.1.4 with Ubuntu 11.04.
