• How can one use the "Add view" dialog in Visual Studio efficiently when working with ASP.NET MVC?

  Does anyone else think that the add view dialog in VS is useless or is it just me? Why is there no search/filtering in there? I can not even paste the type name (without namespace) there to speed up the view creation. Plus, there are a lot of irrelevant classes there, including classes from all referenced libraries. Am I missing something or Microsoft never did any usability testing with that?? Is it possible to filter out types/assemblies in the dialog and/or better navigation compared to manually scrolling the combobox with all the types listed? Is it possible to include only types from a particular directory/assembly/namespace? (the ViewModels namespace for example) EDIT: As it seems from the answers that there is no usable workaround for this, I have filed a suggestion at Connect: https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=507784 Please vote for the suggestion if you find this is an important issue.

  Ok, I am sure this is simple but I am not able to figure it out and people on this site seem to be brains... I will admit this is for homework but it has nothing to do with how to code. Has to do with a silly error that I am unable to resolve. I try to debug and when I debug i get the following error ERROR "Visual Studio cannot start debugging because debut target 'C:\Documents and Settings\user\Desktop\programs6\HuricaneSeasonStatistics\bin\Debug\HuricaneStatistics.exe" is missing. Please build the project and retry, or set the OutputPath and AssemblyName properties appropriate to point a the correct location for the target assembly." I am fairly sure the error is in the OutputPath and or AssemblyName. but I am not sure where to change.

• Can I use manifests to specify an optional dependency on a COM server?

  I'd like to use manifests to specify a dependency on a COM server (reg-free COM). The consumer application will mostly work fine without the COM server - only something like 1,7% of its functionality uses the COM server. So with plain old regsvr32 it would start and work fine until the user would do something that would trigger CoCreateInstance() call and at that point the consumer would get an error message. Now I've played with manifests for a while and it looks like the consumer wouldn't even start unless the COM server assembly it depends on is present in the file system. That's no good. Is there a way to use reg-free COM with manifests and make the dependency optional - so that the consumer program starts and works fine until CoCreateInstance() is actually called?

• msbuild for .NET 3.5 issue with csla and System.Linq

  This is a weird problem. I am trying to build a .NET 3.5 solution with msbuild. I generally write custom build scripts for this, and when I tried this time to build a simple .NET assembly which internally uses CSLA, it started giving me Linq errors. However, if I build the proj file via msbuild (command line), it seems to build just fine. No issues at all. Anyone else encounter this issue...and if yes, how do i fix this? Thanks, Sashidhar Kokku

• C#: Problem trying to resolve a class when two namespaces are similar

  I'm running into an issue where I can't make a reference to a class in a different namespace. I have 2 classes: namespace Foo { public class Class1 { ... } } namespace My.App.Foo { public class Class2 { public void SomeMethod() { var x = new Foo.Class1; // compile error! } } } The compile error is: The type or namespace name 'Class1' does not exist in the namespace 'My.App.Foo' In this situation, I can't seem to get Visual Studio to recognize that "Foo.Class1" refers to the first class. If I mouse-over "Foo", it shows that its trying to resolve that to "My.App.Foo.Class1" If I put the line: using Foo; at the top of the .cs file that contains Class2, then it also resolves that to "My.App.Foo". Is there some trick to referencing the right "Foo" namespace without just renaming the namespaces so they don't conflict? Both of these namespaces are in the same assembly.

• CLR Function not working in restored database

  So I've restore a database with CLR assemblies in it from one physical server to another. One of the functions in the CLR assembly essentially does an uncompress of some compressed data. When I run this function against data in the restored database it returns the compressed data (rather than the uncompressed data). No error is thrown in SSMS or in the SQL server error logs. At the suggestion of others, I've checked differences in the database ownership (both owned by sa), trustworthiness (both set to not trustworthy). I also checked differences in the .NET framework installs on both machines but found only that the target machine had a 1.1 version installed that the source didn't. I don't know what else to try. • Need to have an aspx page with a Feature in SharePoint 2010

  I have added a custom button to the server ribbon in SharePoint (I have used a feature with Farm scope, so that the button is visible throughout the various site collections). However when I install the feature and click the button, I get an error saying "Cannot load CustomPage". I understand that I haven't deployed the assembly, but shouldn't the aspx page be compiled Just In Time?

  I have created a class library (assembly) that provides messaging, email and sms. This class library defines an interface IMessenger which the classes EmailMessage and SmsMessage both implement. I see this is a general library that would be part of my infrastructure layer and would / can be used across any development. Now, in my application layer I have a class that requires to use a messaging component, I obviously want to use the messaging library that I have created. Additionally, I will be using an IoC container (Spring.net) to allow me to inject my implementation i.e. either email or sms. Therefore, I want to program against an interface in my application layer class, do I then need to reference my message class library from my application layer class? Is this tightly coupling my application layer class to my message class library? Should I be defining the interface - IMessenger in a seperate library? Or should I be doing something else?

  After installing .Net 4 and getting some questions that were already answered here I also realized how the Framework dlls are repeated in several places for the different Framework versions (this is not new, it happens with previous versions, but hadn't paid attention to it until now) 1 - GAC: %systemroot%\assembly 2- Framework installation directory: %systemroot%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v... 3- and if you have the Windows SDK installed, also in: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\ I think the last ones are the so called "Reference Assemblies" and have extra metadata to aid Visual Studio, but what about location number 2? Why are assemblies repeated there?

• Visual Studios Team System 2008 Code Coverage Window Closes

  Trying to run the code coverage tool in Visual Studios for a set of unit tests. Adam from Think First, Code Later has had the same problem: I wanted to get the code coverage metrics for the project. Naturally, I fire up the solution in Visual Studio 2008, go to the Test menu, click Edit Test Run Configurations, and click Local Test Run. I then click Code Coverage to turn on code coverage for a given assembly and POOF the Local Test Run Configraution window just disappears. He recommends installing this hotfix to fix the problem, however a) when I run that hotfix I get the message “None of the products that are addressed by this software update are installed on this computer. Click Cancel to exit setup.” and b) there is no Silverlight in our solution. Any other ideas for a fix?

• Problem with Models on Master Page View.

  Have a problem with master page views and models. In the first image, I have a simple view in which I am trying to access the Model properties. None of the model properties are available at this time (this is the problem). If I use a <%= Model.blah % then you can see that the model properties are available. Second photo. In the last photo you will now see that I can access the Model properties that I was trying to access in the first photo. An error will be thrown if viewing this page if you don't first do <%= with the model.   I am developing an Excel addin that has an udf and calls it as a worksheet function. It is a com addin where I am using the IDTExtensibility2 interface and set the class interface type as autodual and then shim it as in the link http://blogs.msdn.com/andreww/archive/2006/07/23/excel-interop-types-in-shimmed-automation-add-ins.aspx Things work fine in my development machine but I am having a tough time packaging the assembly. The addin registers but the formula does not appear in the formula bar of Excel after the installation. Can someone help me with the right way to get it done ? • PagedDataSource does not support serialization - how can I enforce this ?

  Sounds like I want to override a physics law, but at least it is the most reasonnable solution, cpu / HDD and Ram effective for my asp.net project. In fact, I got a pageddataSource and a customDataReader that supports paginated data. The truth is my data are in a viewstate variable, because it is re-used in an update panel. When I intend to use it into my pageddatasource, asp.net 3.5 kills me with a System.Web.UI.WebControls.PagedDataSource' in Assembly 'System.Web, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a' is not marked as serializable. cool exception... So I'd rather not offend newton because I know he'll always win, but I would need some help to enforce this pagedDataSource law, that seems so unbelievable, except if someone has an explanation.

• How to add debug assemblies to my Silverlight 2 application?

  So I know now that the debug assemblies have been intentionally left out of the Silverlight runtime to save space. For that reason I get good detailed error messages on my local machine that has the Silverlight SDK on it, but I don't on a computer with the runtime only. I get the ubiquitous, "Debugging resource strings are unavailable." Unfortunately my requirements are a bit unique. I need to include the debug assembly (not sure which one yet) that will give me details of a regular expression error. And so essentially I want to include the dll in the xap if I can. The problem is that I can't seem to do this. I've tried adding the debug dll's as references and setting them to "copy local." And I've tried adding them into the project as content. But in fact, with either method the xap hardly grows in size and the error message doesn't change. Any ideas?

  hi, I wanted to make an application that will take either the path of the dll or Webservice and list me all the functions present in that dll. I accomplished the listing of the function using this but I am not able to list the functions of the Webservices. Using Assembly.GetMembers() it's listing the Function Name with the Parameters Type and I am not able to get the Parameters Name. How shall i get that? While debugging I found that m_parameters is a nonpublic member and i'm not able to get the Parameter name. Is that possible??? And one more question is how shall i list the functions available in the web service without including the web reference or service reference in the windows application using C#.

  Hi guys, I want to use virtual keyboard assembly found here http://www.codeproject.com/KB/miscctrl/touchscreenkeyboard.aspx like on screen keyboard (OSK.exe) in Windows. Can someone please tell me how can I use it so that it always stays on top and yet for user to be able to select other windows on dekstop for keyboard input, just like "on screen keyboard" in Windows, specifically I don't know how to select last selected window (can't use GetForegroundWindow or GetFocus only, because when user clicks on virtual keyboard it gets focused and I get handle of keyboard window itself)?   I have a website on Server A and it needs to find a directory on Server B. On my aspx page, I have: <mb:FileSystemDataSource ID="fileSystemDataSource" runat="server" RootPath="\\servername\Folder\Subfolder" FoldersOnly="true" /> mb is assembly name alias. • Why doesn't C have rotate left/right operators?

  A bit of a philosophical question, I suppose. Hope it belongs here. C language has the standard set of bit-wise operations, including OR, AND, XOR, SHIFT LEFT/RIGHT, NOT. Anyone has an idea why rotate left/rotate right isn't included in the language? These operators are of the same complexity as other bit-wise operators and normally require a single assembly instruction, like the others. Besides, I can think of a lot of uses for rotate operator, probably not less than, say, xor operator - so it sounds a bit strange to me that they aren't included in C along with the rest. Edit: Please stop suggesting implementations of rotation operators. I know how to do that and it's not what the question about.

  Hi, I am pretty new to MVC and I am looking for a way to design my models. I have the MVC web site project and another class library that takes care of data access and constructing the business objects. If I have in that assembly a class named Project that is a business object and I need to display all projects in a view ... should I make another model class Project? In this case the classes will be identical. Do I gain something from doing a new model class? I don't like having in views references to objects from another dll ... but i don't like duplicating the code neither. Did you encounter the same problem?
