According to my quick research, TopLink is the first ORM framework ever created (in 1990s, certainly before 1996). If anyone else has a different opinion, please let me know.   • MSDN Live 2010 &ndash; Delivered : 24 sessions (4 x 6) on Visual Studio and Team Foundation Server

    We (Mikael Nitell and me) got a whole track on the Norwegian MSDN Live tour this year.  We did these as a pair, and covered 4 cities over 4 days, 6 sessions per day, taking 8 hours to come through it.  The Islandic volcano made the travels a bit rough, but we managed 6 flights out of 8. The first one had to go by van instead, 7-8 hour drive each way together with other MSDN Live presenters – a memorable tour! Oslo was the absolute top point.  We had to change hall to a bigger one. People were crowding, and even the big hall was packed!  The presentations were mostly based on demos, but we had a few slides as well.  They have been uploaded to my SkyDrive.  Info to aliens – some of the text may be Norwegian. The sessions were as follows: Overview of news in Visual Studio and Team Foundation server 2010 Ensuring Quality with VS/TFS 2010 Releasing products with VS/TFS 2010 No More No Repro with VS/TFS 2010 Performance Testing and Parallel Programming with VS/TFS 2010 Migrating to VS/TFS 2010 Tips, tricks, news and some best practices with VS/TFS 2010   In the coming days, I will post up examples from the demos too, with explanations of how they are intended to work.     Tried to ask this on SO but was referred here... Am I correct in saying that using a GPL'ed web application framework such as Composite C1 would NOT obligate a company to share the source code we write against said framework? That is the purpose of the AGPL, am I correct? Does this also apply to Javascript frameworks like KendoUI? The GPL would require any changes that we make to the framework be made available to others if we were to offer it for download. In other words, merely loading a web sites content into my browser is not "conveying" or "distributing" that software. I have been arguing that we should avoid GPL web frameworks and now after researching I am pretty sure I am wrong but wanted to get other opinions? Seth

    I've worked through Mario Zechner's "Beginning Android Games" and have made my own pong and asteroids game using the framework used in the book. I have also downloaded the source code for Replica Island and am able to run that. I like Replica Island's framework over the one I made from reading the book. Some differences are that Replica Island uses different activities for each screen instead of Zechner's Screen class and that Replica Island can use a lot of textures and isn't limited to textures with dimensions of powers of 2. If I'm serious about writing games and apps for Android should I learn Replica Island's framework and use that instead of the one I made while reading Zechner's book?

  • 2nd Year College - Learning - Microsoft Server Products

    As the title says, I just finished my first year of college (majoring in Software Engineering). Fortunately my school likes Microsoft enough, and I can get pretty much anything I want that Microsoft sells. I also can get IBM Websphere and the like for free as well. Earlier this year, I set up an oldish computer (2.6 Pentium D, x64) to run ubuntu server headless. I'm predominately a Java developer, so Apache, Maven, Nexus, Sonar, SVN, etc made it onto the machine. It worked really well for personal and school projects, especially team projects (quick ramp up). Anyways, I started to pick up C# to complement my Java knowledge (don't judge me :P), and am interested in working with some of the associated Microsoft equivalents. The machine currently has the Ubuntu install, as well as Windows 7 Ultimate. I do all of my actual development work off my laptop, also running Windows 7 Ultimate. I was wondering what software you would recommend putting on the machine. I’m not actually serving anything off the machine itself, but in Ubuntu I had it doing integration tests with Hudson on every commit, and profiling my applications, etc, etc. The machine would be running headless, and I would remote into it. Here is what I am currently leaning towards / wondering about: Windows 7 Ultimate vs Windows Server 2008 (R2) (no one is really clear why I should go with one over the other) Windows Team Foundation Sharepoint (Never used it before, kind of meh about it) IBM Websphere or Glassfish (Some Java EE web server) SQL Server 2008 A DVCS In order to better control product conflicts / limit resource use, I’m wondering if I should install things into virtual machines (I can get VmWare or Microsoft Virtualization Products) I also plan on installing everything I had running under Linux (it’s almost entirely Java based development software, so it’ll run on both, only reason I went with ubuntu during the year was because the apache build seemed better). I’m primarily looking to become familiar with enterprise software development tools, as well as get something functional that will help my development process. (IE, I’ll still use project and assign tasks even though I might be the only one to assign tasks to, just to practice doing so). Is there any other software / configuration details I should explore? Opinions on my current list? I primarily use C#, Java, and PHP. I'm familiar with ruby, and python as well. Thanks!

  • Using external SOAP service in Workflow service

    I am using the .NET 4 framework and have made a WCF Workflow Service Application. I want to use a SOAP web service (.NET 3.5) I have running in another instance of VS. The only method that is exposed is the following: [WebMethod] public string Reverse(string input) { char[] chars = input.ToCharArray(); Array.Reverse(chars); return new string(chars); } I have used the following steps to add the service in my Workflow: Add Service Reference Provided the WSDL (the operation shows in the Operations box as expected) Clicked OK Build the solution to ensure that the service shows in my toolbox Drag the service from the toolbox into the workflow However, when I look at the properties of the service in the workflow, there is no way to specify the input argument or where to store the result of the invocation of the service. I only have the option of specifying some obscure parameters such as Body:InArgument<ReverseRequestBody and outBody:OutArgument<ReverseResponseBody (none of which are strings). Here is a screenshot depicting the properties of the service in the workflow: My question is therefore: Is it possible at all to use the SOAP service by specifying a string as the input argument (like it is meant to be used), and also assign the result to a workflow variable?

  • CFStrings and storing them into models, related topics

    I have a very frustrating issue that I believe involves CFStringRef and passing them along to custom model properties. The code is pretty messy right now as I am in a debug state, but I will try to describe the problem in words as best as I can. I have a custom model, User, which for irrelevant reasons, I am storing CF types derived from the Address Book API into. Examples include: Name, email as NSStrings. I am simply retrieving the CFStringRef value from the AddressBook API and casting as a string, whereupon I assign to the custom model instance and then CFRelease the string. These NSString properties are set as (nonatomic, retain). I then store this model into an NSArray, and I use this Array as a datasource for a UITableView When accessing the object in the cellForRowAtIndexPath, I get a memory access error. When I do a Debug, I see that the value for this datasource array appears at first glance to be corrupted. I've seen strange values assigned to it, including just plain strings, such as one that I fed to an NSLog function in earlier in the method. So, the thing that leads me to believe that this is Core Foundation related is that I am executing this exact same code, in the same class even, on non-Address Book data, in fact, just good old JSON parsed strings, which produce true Cocoa NSStrings, that I follow the same exact steps to create the datasource array. This code works fine. I have a feeling that my (retain) property declaration and/or my [stringVar release] in my custom model dealloc method may be causing memory problems (since it is my understanding that you shouldn't call a Cocoa retain or release on a CF object). Here is the code. I know some of this is super-roundabout but I was trying to make things as explicit as possible for the sake of debugging.   • What's the best C# recommendation engine or framework?

    Is there anyway to use the examples for the "My Media" Microsoft research project? My Media is a "dynamic personalization and recommendation software framework toolkit" ( http://www.mymediaproject.org ), but out of the box it doesn't provide a sample database (only a LINQ-to-SQL .dbml schema), I don't believe it will be easy to re-create by hand. I was hoping to understand recommendation engines and machine learning with this C#/.Net as a testbed, but without a simple quick start or db it seems impractical. Any suggestions? (I guess it's time to switch to Java with Apache's Mahout, Weka or something similar?)
