• Warning: E-Business Suite Issues with Sun JRE 1.6.0_18

  Users need a Java client to run the Forms-based content in Oracle E-Business Suite.  With Oracle JInitiator 1.3 out of Premier Support as of July 2009, Apps users must run the native Sun Java Runtime Engine (JRE) to access this content.In early 2008 we relaxed our certification and support policy for the use of the native Sun JRE clients with the E-Business Suite. The policy reflected a switch from certifying specific JRE versions for the E-Business Suite to specifying minimum versions, instead. This permits E-Business Suite users to run any JRE release above following minimum certified levels, even later ones that Oracle hasn't explicitly tested with the E-Business Suite: JRE 1.5.0_13 and higherJRE 1.6.0_03 and higherUnder our current policy, Oracle E-Business Suite end-users can upgrade their JRE clients whenever Sun releases a new JRE release on either the 1.5 or 1.6 versions. EBS users do not need to wait for Oracle to certify new JRE 1.5 or 1.6 plug-in updates with the E-Business Suite.Known E-Business Suite Issues with JRE 1.6.0_18We test every new JRE release with both E-Business Suite 11i and 12.  We have identified a number of issues with JRE 1.6.0_18.  If you haven't already upgraded your end-users to JRE 1.6.0_18, we recommend that you to keep them on a prior JRE release such as 1.6.0_17 (6u17).

• Patterns & Practices: Composite Services CTP2 is Public

  Finally the last CTP and pre-release version for the Composite Services is out. There were quite a lot of changes since CTP1. We added many new samples and many enhancements to the repository (DB) which is now called Inventory in sync with SOA Patterns. Here is a brief list of the main changes according to the included documentations.   Changes and additions in this release This CTP release contains reusable source code and samples to illustrate implementation for the following patterns and scenarios: Repair and Resubmit – this pattern is implemented in ESB Toolkit 2.0 as part of Exception Management Framework (EMF). This code drop provides code sample how to implement this pattern for Windows AppFabric workflow service, using Exceptions Web Service and workflow activities to create fault message, which will be created in EMF database.  Analytic Tracing – this code drop contains reusable code and samples for implementing ETW tracing: event collector service and database that store collected events. This capability may be used for scenarios that need flexibility on how collected events are decoded and processed via extensibility points you can configure and implement:  plugins and event decoders with leveraging ETW tracing capabilities provided by the event collector service.   Inventory Centralization – this code drop contains service catalog database, web services and samples to show how to implement Metadata Centralization, Schema Centralization and Policy Centralization patterns.  Service Virtualization – we included sample for implementing this pattern using WCF routing service( which is part of .NET framework) and service metadata centralization capabilities to define routing service metadata in service catalog. • Server Firewall preventing sending of email [migrated]

  The firewall on my VPS appears to be preventing my site from sending email. It was working fine until the end of last month. My hosting provider (Webfusion) has been next to useless. I am able to send email if I open INPUT ports 32768-65535, but not if these ports are closed. Why would this be? • Permission based Authorization vs. Role based Authorization - Best Practices - 11g

  In previous blog posts here and here I have alluded to the support in OWSM for Permission based authorization and Role based authorization support. Recently I was having a conversation with an internal team in Oracle looking to use OWSM for their Web Services security needs and one of the topics was around - When to use permission based authorization vs. role based authorization? As in most scenarios the answer is it depends! There are trade-offs involved in using the two approaches and you need to understand the trade-offs and you need to understand which trade-offs are better for your scenario. Role based Authorization: Simple to use. Just create a new custom OWSM policy and specify the role in the policy (using EM Fusion Middleware Control). Inconsistent if you have multiple type of resources in an application (ex: EJBs, Web Apps, Web Services) - ex: the model for securing EJBs with roles or the model for securing Web App roles - is inconsistent. Since the model is inconsistent, tooling is also fairly inconsistent. Achieving this use-case using JDeveloper is slightly complex - since JDeveloper does not directly support creating OWSM custom policies. Permission based Authorization: More complex. You need to attach both an OWSM policy and create OPSS Permission authorization policies. (Note: OWSM leverages OPSS Permission based Authorization support). More appropriate if you have multiple type of resources in an application (ex: EJBs, Web Apps, Web Services) and want a consistent authorization model. Consistent Tooling for managing authorization across different resources (ex: EM Fusion Middleware Control). Better Lifecycle support in terms of T2P, etc. Achieving this use-case using JDeveloper is slightly complex - since JDeveloper does not directly support creating/editing OPSS Permission based authorization policies.

• Cheating Incident

  Hi Everyone -I just wanted to give you a heads-up on some recent actions that we had to take regarding someone who tried to cheat on a test.Just last week, we had a candidate who was bold enough to try to take screen-shots during the exam using his cell phone. Of course this is completely against Oracle Certification Program policy. This candidate's exam was immediately stopped, and the candidate was ejected from the testing center.Of course it doesn't end there. This candidate was also suspended permanently from the Oracle Certification Program, and all of his previous certifications were revoked. He is no longer eligible to participate in the program. Unfortunately - if this candidate works for an Oracle partner company, then his company will also likely become aware of his indiscretion - particularly when they request validation of his certification.Although this particular candidate was blatantly involved in content theft, any type of cheating incident is very unfortunate. It erodes the value of the certification credentials, and hurts everyone involved. • Should Professional Development occur on company time?

  As a first-time part-time software developer at a small consulting company, I'm struggling to organise time to further my own software development knowledge - whether that's reading a book, keeping up with the popular questions on StackOverflow, researching a technology we're using in-depth, or following the front page of Hacker News. I can see results borne from my self-allocated study time, but listing and demonstrating the skills and knowledge gained through Professional Development is difficult. The company does not have any defined PD policy, and there's a lot of pressure to get something deliverable done now! when working for consultants. I've checked what my coworkers do, and they don't appear to allocate any time to self-improvement; they just work at the problems they're given, looking up specific MSDN references, code samples, and the like as they need them. I realise that PD policy is going to vary across companies of different size and culture, and a company like my own is probably a bit of an edge case. I'd love to hear views and experiences from more seasoned developers; especially those who have to make the PD policy choices in their team or company. I'd also like to learn about the more radical approaches to PD, even if they're completely out there; it's always interesting to see what other people are trying. Not quite a summary, but what I'm trying to ask: Is it common or recommended for companies to allocate PD time? Whose responsibility is it to ensure a developer's knowledge and skills are up to date? Should a part-time work schedule inspire a lower ratio of PD time : work? How can a developer show non-developer coworkers that reading blogs and books is net productive? Is reading blogs and books actually net productive? (references welcomed) Is writing blogs effective as a way of PD? (a recent theme on Hacker News) This is sort of a broad question because I don't know exactly which questions I need to ask here, so any thoughts on relevant issues I haven't addressed are very welcome.

• Why is apt-cache so slow?

  After upgrade to Trusty (14.04) from Saucy (13.10), all apt operations are very slow. Even those that do not include downloading anything, or connecting to any servers. For example, displaying the apt policy # time apt-cache policy [...] real 0m8.951s user 0m5.069s sys 0m3.861s takes almost ten seconds! Mostly a weird lag right after issuing the command. And it's the same even if I issue the same command again. On another system it doesn't take a tenth of a second real 0m0.096s user 0m0.070s sys 0m0.023s The other system is a little beefier but there was no noticeable difference before the upgrade. It's the same with apt-get, anything apt-related. How do I find out the source of this lag and fix it? • LSI 9285-8e and Supermicro SC837E26-RJBOD1 duplicate enclosure ID and slot numbers

  I am working with 2 x Supermicro SC837E26-RJBOD1 chassis connected to a single LSI 9285-8e card in a Supermicro 1U host. There are 28 drives in each chassis for a total of 56 drives in 28 RAID1 mirrors. The problem I am running in to is that there are duplicate slots for the 2 chassis (the slots list twice and only go from 0 to 27). All the drives also show the same enclosure ID (ID 36). However, MegaCLI -encinfo lists the 2 enclosures correctly (ID 36 and ID 65). My question is, why would this happen? Is there an option I am missing to use 2 enclosures effectively? This is blocking me rebuilding a drive that failed in slot 11 since I can only specify enclosure and slot as parameters to replace a drive. When I do this, it picks the wrong slot 11 (device ID 46 instead of device ID 19). Adapter #1 is the LSI 9285-8e, adapter #0 (which I removed due to space limitations) is the onboard LSI. After getting in contact with a very knowledgeable Supermicro tech, they provided us with a tool called Xflash (doesn't appear to be readily available on their FTP). The first 2 enclosures logical ID is partially masked out where the 3rd one (which has a correct unique enclosure ID) is not. We pointed this out to Supermicro and were able to confirm that this address is supposed to be set during manufacturing and there was a problem with a certain batch of these enclosures where the logical ID was not set. We believe that the RAID controller is determining the ID based on the logical ID and since our first 2 enclosures have the same logical ID, they get the same enclosure ID. We also confirmed that 0000007F is the default which comes from LSI as an ID. The next pointer that helps confirm this could be a manufacturing problem with a run of JBODs is the fact that all 6 of the enclosures that have this problem begin with 00E. I believe that between 00E8 and 00EE Supermicro forgot to program the logical IDs correctly and neglected to recall or fix the problem post production. Fortunately for us, there is a tool to manage the WWN and logical ID of the devices from Supermicro: ftp://ftp.supermicro.com/utility/ExpanderXtools_Lite/. Our next step is to schedule a shutdown of these JBODs (after data migration) and reprogram the logical ID and see if it solves the problem. Update 06/28/12 #2: I just discovered this FAQ at Supermicro while Google searching for "lsi 0000007f": http://www.supermicro.com/support/faqs/faq.cfm?faq=11805. I still don't understand why, in the last several times we contacted Supermicro, they would have never directed us to this article :\

Is it possible to capture mouse events which occur on an HTML element's scroll bar? The reason I want to do this is to make a visual popup element disappear when ever a click event occurs anywhere outside the popup element.

  Hi All, I just started playing around with jquery widgets within my jqmodals in my mvc app. I know this may be a long shot but I'll take it. Initially, I can click the Add link, get the alert ("which is the prize", watching too much tv), next click cancel to close modal and get the desired results. I can, then, click the Edit link and get the same desired results. However, if I click Edit link first then I try to click the Add link, "forget about it" I don't get the alert (which means my widget did not init). • MacRuby + Interface Builder: How to display, then close, then display a window again

  I'm a complete n00b with MacRuby and Cocoa, though I've got more than a year of Ruby experience, so keep that in mind when answering - I need lots of details and explanation. :) I've set up a simple project that has 2 windows in it, both of which are built with Interface Builder. The first window is a simple list of accounts using a table view. It has a "+" button below the table. When I click the + button, I want to show an "Add New Account" window. I also have an AccountsController < NSWindowController and a AddNewAccountController class, set up as the delegates for these windows, with the appropriate button click methods wired up, and outlets to reference the needed windows. When I click the "+" button in the Accounts window, I have this code fire: @add_account.center @add_account.display @add_account.makeKeyAndOrderFront(nil) @add_account.orderFrontRegardless this works great the first time I click the + button. Everything shows up, I'm able to enter my data and have it bind to my model. however, when I close the add new account form, things start going bad. if I set the add new account window to release on close, then the second time I click the + button, the window will still pop up but it's frozen. i can't click any buttons, enter any data, or even close the form. i assume this is because the form's code has been released, so there is no message loop processing the form... but i'm not entirely sure about this. if i set the add new account window to not release on close, then the second time i click the + button, the window shows up fine and it is usable - but it still has all the data that i had previously entered... it's still bound to my previous Account class instance. what am I doing wrong? what's the correct way to create a new instance of the Add New Account form, create a new Account model, bind that model to the form and show the form, when I click the + button on the Accounts form? ... this is all being done on OSX 10.6.6, 64bit, with XCode 3.2.4
