• Setting outbound 'Expires:' in Squid server's HTTP header

  I'm having a problem where items served by my Squid server are being cached by Limelight for too long, sometimes days. It happens when a piece of content has been static for a long time (weeks) and then undergoes numerous changes in a matter of hours. Limelight gets its content from our Squid server and I'm told that if I can add 'Expires: 15m' in the HTTP header the Squid server sends, Limelight will not cache the image for more than 15 min. Unfortunately, I can fond no setting in Squid that will allow me to add this to the header. • Create a HTML table from nested maps (and vectors)

  I'm trying to create a table (a work schedule) I have coded previously using python, I think it would be a nice introduction to the Clojure language for me. I have very little experience in Clojure (or lisp in that matter) and I've done my rounds in google and a good bit of trial and error but can't seem to get my head around this style of coding. • Active Directory - Query Group for all machines

  Hi, I'm trying to obtain a list of all Machines that are members of a known group. I have the group GUID and am constructing a query using the "memberof=" format and filtering by ObjectClass. This works fine but doesn't return machines if the PrimaryGroup attribute of a machine is set to be the known group. In this case, that machine won't be returned. I've found the explanation of why this is in the following link (See Joe Kaplan's response) http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/29773581/active-directory-query-c.aspx Unfortunately the outlined answer is how to obtain the list of groups from a given user. I'd like to do the reverse and from a given group obtain the list of machines. It seems that the PrimaryGroup information is stored on the Machine/User side so I'm not sure if what I want to do is even possible. I had thought I would be able to query the TokenGroup attribute of the known group and then construct a query to return all machines that have the TokenGroup attribute set but it seems that not all groups have this attribute. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? If any clarification is needed let me know! Cheers, Ben

• VS2010 + Resharper 5 performance issues

  I have been using VS2010 with Resharper 5 for several weeks and am having a performance issue. Sometimes when typing, the cursor will lag and the keystrokes won't show instantaneously. Also, scrolling will lag at times. There is a forum thread started and JetBrains has been responding. Several people (including myself) have added their voice and uploaded some performance profiles. If anyone here has has this issue, I would encourage you to visit the thread and let JetBrains know about it. Has anyone had this problem and have a suggestion to restore performance?

• Updated iphone application not live yet

  Hi All, 3 weeks back we uploaded an application on the iTunes(V1.0). On Thursday we updated that application with new build (V1.2). I clicked the "Update" button on itunesconnect.apple.com and followed uploaded the new binary and new contents. On the next day the Description and price tag are updated successfully, but the build version number and screens shots are still from the previous version. And the amazing thing we noticed is that application status is "Waiting for Review" from last 2 days... :( I tried to play with release date, but still application status is "Waiting for Review". Its been 2 days that there is no activity happening from apple... :( Please help me in this scenario..... Thanks in advance. Regards, Vishal.

• Can a Flash-based CFGRID render basic HTML in the cells?

  (I'm very new to both Flex and CF -- more a .NET/ExtJS guy, so I'm a duck out of water.) I'm tweaking someone else's CFGRID code. It uses Flash format--HTML isn't an option since it would require redesigning the entire interface around the grid. Tha data I want to put in the grid have some very simple HTML elements-- <sub>, <sup>, and HTML entities like &deg;. I can imagine <i> or <b> might be there in the future. How can I tell a particular CFGRIDCOLUMN to render its contents as HTML? I've heard this is possible, but Google is not my friend tonight. Stuck with CF7 for a few more weeks, so if there are any CF8/CF9-specific solutions, please let me know those as well, but that won't help my immediate need.

  I'm looking to implement a state machine to manage a user moving through a series of steps over an extended period of time (weeks) with emails and then they interact with the app. I've looked at a couple of AASM plugins and forks (it seems like this plugin space has become a bit chaotic) and am curious what people would recommend. I saw the automatic AASM by hashrocket, that transitions states using cron, and from the title it looks like it might fit the bill but there doesn't appear to be any documentation anywhere and it looks more like a skeleton app than a plugin.

• Why would Silverlight be crashing in Release but not in Debug mode?

  I have a Silverlight App that has worked well in Debug and Release modes for weeks. It still works well in Debug mode. However, now when I run it in Release mode, it starts, shows me the screen, loads the data, then hangs, and the browser (Firefox) closes automatically. I've tried other browsers and each of them crashes, Chrome says "The Silverlight Plug-In has crashed" for instance. I've installed Ubuntu on my system but have no exposure to shell scripting. I need some advice on how I can quickly learn to use the Linux terminal quickly. • Where has my parallel port gone? ioperm(888,1,1) returns -1.

  I have an old Dell Dimension 8200 running Gentoo which I use solely to control various things using the parallel port. After shutting it down a few weeks ago, I started it up again today and tried to access the parallel port like I usually do. Unfortunately, my code bombed out when it tried to call ioperm(888,1,1) to grab the parallel port which returned an error code of -1. There have been no changes to the system be it hardware or software, no updates, no tweaking, no dropping the case, no over-amping the data pins, nothing. The port and the software have been working fine for months with no changes, and were working fine when I shut it down last. Running my code with root privileges changes nothing. What is breaking this and how can I fix it?

  I am not sure why other people have not asked this before. But have you notice that the asp:Calendar shows an extra week at the end? For example if the VisibleMonth is set to 2010-03-01 and FirstDayOfWeek to Sunday: It will show 6 weeks. Feb 28 to March 6 March 7 to March 13 March 14 to March 20 March 21 to March 27 March 28 to April 3 April 4 to April 10 I was wondering why Microsoft shows the last Row which is entirely on April. I tried to search the net for a property but it does not seem to be existing. The only solution that I could think of is to override the Pre_Render and check all individual date if they are still within the week of the VisibleDate. But of course that is an extreme checking since each rendering of the control shows it.

• Out of Memory When Loading Java Entities

  I have a terrible problem that hopefully has a very simple answer. I am running out of memory when I perform a basic If I have code like this: MyEntity myEntity; for (Object id: someIdList) { myEntity = find(id); // do something basic with myEntity } And the find() method is a standard EntityManager related method: public MyEntity find(Object id) { return em.find(mycorp.ejb.entity.MyEntity.class, id); } This code worked a couple of weeks ago, and works fine if there are fewer items in the database. The resulting error I am facing is: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: GC overhead limit exceeded The exception is coming from oracle toplink calling some oracle jdbc methods. The loop exists because an EJBQL such as "select object(o) from MyEntity as o" will overload the application server when there are lots of records.

  It's a real shame that in .Net there is no polymorphism for numbers, i.e. no INumeric interface that unifies the different kinds of numerical types such as bool, byte, uint, int, etc. In the extreme one would like a complete package of abstract algebra types. Joe Duffy has an article about the issue: http://www.bluebytesoftware.com/blog/CommentView,guid,14b37ade-3110-4596-9d6e-bacdcd75baa8.aspx How would you express this in C#, in order to retrofit it, without having influence over .Net or C#? I have one idea that involves first defining one or more abstract types (interfaces such as INumeric - or more abstract than that) and then defining structs that implement these and wrap types such as int while providing operations that return the new type (e.g. Integer32 : INumeric; where addition would be defined as public Integer32 Add(Integer32 other) { return Return(Value + other.Value); } I am somewhat afraid of the execution speed of this code but at least it is abstract. No operator overloading goodness... Any other ideas? .Net doesn't look like a viable long-term platform if it cannot have this kind of abstraction I think - and be efficient about it. Abstraction is reuse.

• Filesystem synchronization library?

  Hi, I've got 10 GB of files to back up daily to another site. The client is way out in the country so bandwidth is an issue. Does anyone know of any existing software or libraries out there that help with keeping a folder with its files synchronized across a slow link, that is it only sends files across if they have changed? Some kind of hash checking would be nice, too, to at least confirm the two sides are the same. I don't mind paying some money for it, seeing as how it might take me several weeks to a month to implement something decent on my own. I just don't want to re-invent the wheel, here. BTW it is a windows shop (they have an in house windows IT guy) so windows is preferred. I also have 10 GB of SQL Server 2000 databases to go across. Is the SQL server replication mode reliable? • Foreign keys in MySQL?

  I have been slowly learning SQL the last few weeks. I've picked up all of the relational algebra and the basics of how relational databases work. What I'm trying to do now is learn how it's implemented. A stumbling block I've come across in this, is foreign keys in MySQL. I can't seem to find much about the other than that they exist in the InnoDB storage schema that MySQL has. What is a simple example of foreign keys implemented in MySQL? When quoting jobs for anything over $10,000 I always feel uneasy and unsure about the estimate I'm providing (though, I'm not sure why, I know what I'm worth [ I think :-) ] and I charge appropriately. In danger of being voted closed because of its subjective (but factual) nature - the question(s): What is the largest amount you have charged for a single programming job (not including maintenance, support, or residual income). What are some of the details of the specific job? (research, q&a, challenges, etc) What languages did you use to get the job done? Assuming you bill your work at an hourly rate, what was the rate? How long did the job actually take you to complete? (from start to deployment, how many weeks, months, years?)

• Facebook calling Google App Engine code using GET instead of POST

  I've been developing a Facebook app using Google App Engine in Python and the pyfacebook bindings. For weeks everything worked fine but suddenly it stopped. At first I thought it was a code change so I rolled back the entire dev directory to a version I knew worked, but still it failed. It's possible a change I made to the application's settings caused the issue but, if so, I can't figure out what. I've figured out that the problem is that instead of calling the post(self) method of my Main class, Facebook is calling using a GET. Does anyone know why Facebook would use a GET method instead of a POST? It's an IFrame app. Thanks,

• Distributed datastore

  We're trying to add some kind of persistence in our app. The app generates about 250 entries per second. Each of these entries belong to one of 2M files. For each file, we want to keep the last 10 entries, so we can look them up later. The way our client application works : it gets a stream of all the data it fetches the right file (GET) it adds the new content it saves the file back (PUT) We're looking for an efficient way to store this data that can scale horizontally as the amount of data we're getting is doubling every few weeks. We initially looked at S3. It works fine, but becomes very expensive very fast ($1000 monthly just in PUT operations!) We then gave a shot at Riak. But it seems we can't get more than 60 write/sec on each node, which is very very slow. Any other solution out there?

• Proper NSArray initialization for ivar data in a method

  I'm new to Objective-C and iPhone development and have been using Apress' Beginning iPhone 3 Programming book as my main guide for a few weeks now. In a few cases as part of a viewDidLoad: method, ivars like a breadTypes NSArray are initialized like below, with an intermediate array defined and then ultimately set to the actual array like this: NSArray *breadArray = [[NSArray alloc] initWithObjects:@"White", @"Whole Weat", @"Rye", @"Sourdough", @"Seven Grain", nil]; self.breadTypes = breadArray; [breadArray release]; Why is it done this way, instead of simply like this: self.breadTypes = [[NSArray alloc] initWithObjects:@"White", @"Whole Weat", @"Rye", @"Sourdough", @"Seven Grain", nil]; Both seem to work when I compile and run it. Is the 2nd method above not doing proper memory management? I assume initWithObjects: returns an array with a retain count of 1 and I eventually release breadTypes again in the dealloc: method, so that wraps things up nicely. I'm guessing 'self.breadTypes = ...' copies the data to the new array, which is why the original array can be safely released, correct?
