    Our application uses a topic to push message to a small set of subscribers. what sort of things should i look for when modeling a jms message with respect to the size of the actual message to be pushed. Are there any known limits or is application server specific? Any best practices or suggestions on this topic (pun unintended)?

  • How do you make cin typesafe?

    It is well known that cin is not typesafe (e.g. cin integer; and entering "fifty five" will cause it to flip out). I have seen many not-so-elegant ways to hand this, such as getlining a string and using sstream to convert it to a number, or looping with cin.fail() and clearing the stream and reentering it, etc. Is there any library or anyway to overload the inserter operator to make cin automatically typesafe?

  • latex computer output segments

    I have a verbatim environment containing computer output as text. This text is sematically made of two sections, each section being separated from the other by an empty line. The number of sections and their content is known, so I don't need to parse the text, but the line between the sections is very important (as it gives semantics to the "text"). Each segment is made of multiple lines. How could I write (1) and (2) on the left handside at the centre of each segment?

    In one of the StackOverflow Podcasts (the one where guys were discussing data generation for testing DBs -- either #11 or #12), Jeff mentioned something like "reverse regular expressions", which are used exactly for that purpose: given a regex, produce a string which will eventually match said regex. What is the correct term for this whole concept? Is this a well-known concept?

  • Is there a reason why a base class decorated with XmlInclude would still throw a type unknown exception when serialized?

    I will simplify the code to save space but what is presented does illustrate the core problem. I have a class which has a property that is a base type. There exist 3 dervived classes which could be assigned to that property. If I assign any of the derived classes to the container then the XmlSerializer throws dreaded "The type xxx was not expected. Use the XmlInclude or SoapInclude attribute to specify types that are not known statically." exception when attempting to seralize the container. However my base class is already decorated with that attribute so I figure there must be an additional "hidden" requirement. The really odd part is that the default WCF serializer has no issues with this class hierarchy.   • Go through a number of functions in Python

    I have an unknown number of functions in my python script (well, it is known, but not constant) that start with site_... I was wondering if there's a way to go through all of these functions in some main function that calls for them. something like: foreach function_that_has_site_ as coolfunc if coolfunc(blabla,yada) == true: return coolfunc(blabla,yada) so it would go through them all until it gets something that's true. thanks!

    It is known that I can read the whole file content in memory and encrypt it using the following code. contents = fin.read() cipher = M2Crypto.EVP.Cipher(alg="aes_128_cbc", key = aes_key, iv = aes_iv, op = 1) encryptedContents = cipher.update(contents) encryptedContents += cipher.final() But what if the file size is large, is there a way for me to pass the input stream to M2Crypto instead of reading the whole file first?

  • Name that blog entry - Modelling changes over time with two db columns only.

    I vaguely remember reading a blog entry (written by a well-known blogger I think) about how to model price changes over time, and that you could model most changes by saving two dates only (two columns in a db). The blog talked about prices on a website changing over time and how you could figure out the right price to charge knowing only when the purchase had been made. Very vague, I know, but my google-fu is failing me, everyone at IRC are busy talking about other stuff and I don't know what to do! :)

    For the following Python dictionary: dict = { 'stackoverflow': True, 'superuser': False, 'serverfault': False, 'meta': True, } I want to aggregate the boolean values above into the following boolean expression: dict['stackoverflow'] and dict['superuser'] and dict['serverfault'] and dict['meta'] The above should return me False. I'm using keys with known names above but I want it to work so that there can be an infinite number of unknown key names.

    The list of valid XML characters is well known, as defined by the spec it's: #x9 | #xA | #xD | [#x20-#xD7FF] | [#xE000-#xFFFD] | [#x10000-#x10FFFF] My question is whether or not it's possible to make a PCRE regular expression for this (or its inverse) without actually hard-coding the codepoints, by using Unicode general categories. An inverse might be something like [\p{Cc}\p{Cs}\p{Cn}], except that improperly covers linefeeds and tabs and misses some other invalid characters.
