• Unable to logoff, disconnect, or reset terminal server user in production environment

  I'm looking for some ideas on how to disconnect, logoff, or reset a user's session in a 2008 Terminal Server (unable to login as the user either as it is completely locked-up). This is a production environment, so rebooting the server or doing something system-wide is out of the question for now. Any Powershell tricks to help us with this? We've tried killing the session's processes too, directly from the same terminal server (from the task manager, Terminal Services Manager and the Resource Monitor) with no results. Help!

• Not able to connect to a mac client from a windows machine

  I have a Server.exe file which I use to connect to a mac.(I am fairly confident that server.exe is not buggy ).When i try to do this I get this often cited error "No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it " I did search some existing questions about this on the forum and it looked like this might be a firewall issue.FWIW I dont have any firewall set on my mac (client) and on my server machine (Windows 7 64 bit ) under the firewall settings I have :- Incoming connections : Block all connections to programs that are not on the list of allowed programs. Active Domain Networks: Same domain as the one which my client is on. Windows Firewire State: Off. Do you think i need to change something here?Can someone help me with next steps?

Now, i need to bring in Windows Authentication to the system whereby which CruiseControl.Net server webdashboard when accessed from a client machine(local machine associated with a common server), would be authenticated and be authorized to access the CruiseControl.Net features based on the authority of the logged in users. • Upgrade MySQL on Plesk on Windows

  I just got a nasty surprise when I installed a website in Unicode Hindi (Indian language) on a server, all freshly entered unicode data is turning into question marks on the server. On my dev machine it works perfectly. I found that I have MySQL version 5.0.45 (installed in default by Plesk I guess). On my dev machine i have version 5.1.33. I believe the problem could be due to the version difference. The new version of MySQL apparently has better support for Unicode than the older one. I want to upgrade MySQL on my Windows Server machine with Plesk installed on it I am reluctant to just install the new version using the mysql installer because Plesk maintains some custom settings for mysql and I am afraid the new version could change those settings and break my db. Can anyone tell me do I have to do anything special to install MySQL on plesk on windows or can I just use the new version installer?

• Client/server application RPC connection gets disconnected very frequently

  I have a client/server application that uses RPC for the client to communicate with the server. Fairly regularly, I get an event in the Application log that the RPC connection was disconnected: Client callback failed ((0x80010108) ) I have the Windows Firewall disabled on both machines. I've even run the client on a second computer with a clean Windows XP install without any group policies. This has been going on for a long time and no one has been able to figure out why it's happening. The same client/server app works fine at other client locations. Any thoughts?

• How to get my W2003-server (back) into the web (after setting up bridged networking)

  I have recently set up Virtualbox on a W2003-Server (which is also used as webserver, accessed from the web). My vbox worked nicely, but then I wanted more, I wanted to have the vm appear in the intranet like any ordinary pc. I was advised to setup bridged networking as opposed to NAT. I did so, and in the server's network connections have bridged the LAN-Connection and the "VirtualBox Host-Only Network" (yes, it says "host only network", but I assure that VBox networking is configured to use network bridge). So now my VM is visible in the intranet and it also has www-accesss, the server can also access the web. The only problem that came up is that the server is no longer accessible from the web. I've traced an HTTP-Request and it says "Can't connect to *:80 (connect: No route to host)". So maybe something in the router's config needs to be adjusted (yeah, well, the server's IP-Address changed from 192.168.1.199 to ...198). So I went into the router-config, reviewed port-forwarding for port 80 and adjusted the IP there, but it still didn't work. Unsure if it was a router-problem or rather something in the server's config, I've setup a "demilitarized zone" in the router and have put the server into it. (My understanding is that this would put the server straight into the web...) But the result of the HTTP-Requests is still the same :(

• Installing a new SQL Server instance fails

  I've previously in my setup installed SQL Server Express 2005. Now I've switched to SQL Server Express 2008. I updated the command line parameters to those documented for the latter. If the comp already has SQL Server Express 2008 installed, my installer should create a new instance. The command line parameters are as follows: /ACTION=Install /FEATURES=SQLEngine /QS /INSTANCENAME=ABCD /SECURITYMODE=SQL /SAPWD=CunningPassword The requested instance name does not exist on the target machine. This will end in an error -2068643838. The logs show the following error: "No features were installed during the setup execution. The requested features may already be installed." If I remove the /QS parameter and try to install interactively, I'll get as far as the Feature Selection page. The UI shows three options, Instance Features, Shared Features and Redistributable Features. Whatever I select, clicking Next results in the same error (There are validation errors on this page).   I'm in the preparation stage to roll out a few Windows 2008 R2 Server Core in my VMware ESX environment. In looking over the documentation it looks like Server Core can operate in a little as 6.5 GB of hard drive space. Less disk space required. A Server Core installation requires only about 3.5 gigabytes (GB) of disk space to install and approximately 3 GB for operations after the installation. I am curious as to anyone’s real world experience and recommendations with regard to this requirement. Is it realistic? A little bit about our environment: Less than 25 users, and around 75 computers/servers in our current AD system. These systems will be responsible for normal AD operations and print servers for 5 printers - nothing to big here.

• How to backup iTunes on Windows to folder/share, i.e. without "Back Up to Disc"? No DVD writer avail

  (Surprised I didn't already find an answer here to this!) I've got a computer on which I'd like to back up the iTunes library – music, movies, apps, everything. We're talking multiple gigabytes. Unfortunately, it seems that iTunes' own built-in "Back Up to Disc" feature (the only backup feature I can find in iTunes) only functions with a CD or DVD writer/burner. The computer in question does not have a DVD burner. While it has a CD burner, attempting to back up to CDs would require dozens of discs plus more time than I'm willing to spend swapping them. So: What is the recommended way to back up an entire iTunes library on a Windows computer, to a non-CD/DVD location such as an external hard drive or a network shared folder? Then, once such a backup has been performed, what is the process for restoring the library – e.g. after the computer has been repaved with a new version of Windows – so that iTunes is resurrected whole and recognizes devices it syncs with?   I've recently been having some issues with SQL Server 2008 on our server. We only have one website running at the moment, but it seems at random that the following error occurs. A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the pre-login handshake. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.) I don't understand this error, or what's causing it. Any help would be appreciated. When this error does occur all it takes to fix it is to restart the MSSQLSERVER service. But I need to fix the underlying problem first.

• Why won't my Windows 7 KMS key work on my Server 2008 KMS server?

  Our Microsoft volume licensing site was recently updated to include our Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 KMS keys. We have an existing KMS server running on Server 2008 (not R2). In an attempt to be proactive about supporting the new OSes in our environment, I unregistered the old KMS key with slmgr.vbs and tried registering the new key. The registration failed with Error 0xC004F050. The description for that error was "The Software Licensing Service reported that the product key is invalid." What's wrong? I've checked and double checked that for typos against what is listed on the Volume Licensing website.

• Server 2008 Hard Faults

  Hey all, plase bear with me as I haven't looked at a server in a very long time. The problem I am having is with a Windows 2008 Standard FE Service Pack 2 Intel Xeon X3430 @ 2.40 2.39 GHZ 4 GB Memory 64 Bit There seems to be no problems other than the physical memory peaking at 91%, always with over 100 Hard Faults Per Second. To my understanding hard faults should be fairly rare on a machine with. Are there any logs I can show you? Or investigate myself. The general performance of the machine is ok, i can access SBS2008 and change settings fairly smoothly without hangs etc. However, we connect to the server and do quite a bit of SQL via an application. For a record to retrieve say 20 rows, it can take 20+ seconds. • Windows 2003 R2 zip program blocking EXE file

  I have a Windows 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition SP2 32-bit machine with all latest patch (as of 1-6-2011). It's a VM. I have a zip file, including a pdf file, a txt file and a exe file. If I copy the zip file onto the machine via a shared network drive, I can unzip all the files properly without problems. If I put the zip file on my web server and then I download it from there, I can only unzip the pdf file and txt file. The exe file is silently ignored. I searched the web and found somebody reporting similar issue on XP. If I right click on the zip file downloaded from the web server, at the bottom of the general page, it has a warning message saying that "This file came from antoher computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer" I understand that I can solve the problem by simply clicking the "Unblock" button and extract the file again. The things that bothering me is that why the warning message says "might be blocked"? I tried downloading the same zip file from the same web server on to my Windows 7 box with latest patch. It also shows the same warning message. However, even with the warning message, I can extract all the files properly without clicking the "Unblock" button. Is it a bug in Windows 2003 R2 SP1? Is there any security settings controlling this? How likely will the end user seeing this problem? I want to dig into this because I am worrying people downloading my zip file from my web server might see similar problems. The first thought coming to the user's mind will be the zip file is somehow corrupted. Honestly, I didn't know this "Unblock" feature in Windows before I run into this problem. EDIT I just tried it on another Windows 2003 R2 SP1 machine. The zip program doesn't block the EXE file on that machine either. Both Windows 2003 R2 SP1 machines are joining to the same forest.

• Unable to access published programs on TS web access - win server 2008 OS

  I am using the TS Web Access feature provided by windows server 2008 to publish programs so that they can be accessed over internet using RDC client. I am able to access the programs from the intranet domain . However, when i try from outside the college network, i am only able to see the published programs but not connect to them as i get an error saying "Remote computer cannot be connected. The certificate subject name and the gateway address requested do not match." . pls note that i have created a self -signed certificate and installed on server myself. Also, i am using the direct IPAddress of the server as the gateway address. Since i am able to access programs from with domain , i suspect it to be a simple setting with gateway or certificate. Please let me know if any further info is required on this..any help is appreciated..

  Background: I am developing an application that needs to read data from disk with a fairly consistent throughput. It is important that this throughput is not influenced by other actions that happen on the disk (e.g. by other processes). For this purpose, I was hoping to use the 'Scheduled File I/O' feature in Windows (throught the GetFileBandwithReservation and SetFileBandwithReservation functions). However, this StackOverflow question has thought me that this feature is only available if the device driver supports it. Currently I have no computer at my disposition that seems to support this feature (I have an HP Proliant server and a Dell Precision workstation). Question: If I were to order a new server, how can I know beforehand if this feature will be supported by the device driver? How 'upscale' does the server have to be? Has anybody used this feature with success and cares to share his experiences?

  For special testing purposes, we need a Windows server to allow the following: A team member can log in remotely to the server. When remotely logged in, they can disconnect the wireless connection, perform a few tests, and then reconnect the wireless connection. In general, the LAN connection would just be used for the remote login, the wireless connection would be used for performing tests including using a web browser to test certain web sites, etc. How can we successfully configure the server to support 2 network connections like this? (A regular LAN connection + a wireless connection). And also make sure that the tests we perform using the browser utilize the wireless connection for the outgoing internet activity.

• Windows Media Center showing Jerky Video on PC

  I had to repave my Windows 7 x64 box last week due to a hard drive crash, and for a while everything was running perfectly but now all videos in Windows Media Center are jerky (the sound is fine, they just seem to skip a ton of frames all the time). This is on the local machine, but the same thing happens when I try to stream to my Xbox. The videos all show fine in VLC and Windows Media Player. I guess I must have installed something recently (in the process of getting all the apps I usually have running on my PC) that caused this but for the life of me I can't figure it out. I have updated to the latest video driver (and then rolled back to the standard Windows 7 driver), I have rolled back all the other drivers that I have installed (I believe). I have uninstalled all the codec packs (I also run TVersity, so I hate the TVersity codec pack installed), and I uninstalled TVersity. Nothing seems to help. I have uninstalled windows media center, and reinstalled it from the Programs and Features. I have basically ran out of things to try to fix this, and am almost thinking about reinstalling Windows again. Any suggestions?

  Good morning, I have a sql server 2000 machine, with SP4. I have a transactional replication. A keep receving this error message: The process could not execute 'sp_replcmds' on 'servername' the logreader stops responding.When i click start it starts fine, and the replication starts fine.And then, works for hours, and the problem comes back. In the begining i though it could be timeouts, but i already set a couple of parameters in the logreader profile,like querytimeout/readbatchsize. Sometimes when the logreader stops,it generates a dump, but not always. In event viewer, it appears this message: 17066 : SQL Server Assertion: File: , line=1985 Failed Assertion = 'startLSN = m_curLSN'. 18052 : Error: 3624, Severity: 20, State: 1. 17066 : SQL Server Assertion: File: , line=2223 Failed Assertion = 'm_noOfScAlloc == 0'. I also executed checkdb in the databases, and they are fine. have you every experienced something similar? thanks in advance, Renato Alves.

• HP CM2320 Printer crashes windows 2003 spooler in TS/Citrix

  Hello, I'm having a very annoying issue with an HP printer (CM2320): all of a sudden, any user who has that printer installed locally as default printer would crash any Windows 2003 terminal services or Citrix server (XenApp PS 4.5) as soon as he connect, causing the session to hang and other users to be unable to connect to the server. To restore functionality, an administrator has to connect to the server's console session and acknowledge the error message about spoolsv.exe having crashed with an AV. I tried downloading the latest drivers from HP (an adventure worthy of Lara Croft in itself) and install it on all servers but that didn't seem to have helped the situation: the spooler is still crashing. Anyone has a suggestion about what I could do about this ?

I just want to test my web application on the machine it self so I don't need the mails to go out on the internet, but just to be written to disk (so that I can verify that the mail function was indeed called and the correct data was handed over to SMTP) Can you recommend some tool. • Windows Phone sync error when syncing with iTunes on different Hard Drive

  I have my iTunes library file on a separate hard drive (which I believe may be the cause of the problem) and I have been trying to use it to synchronize with my Windows Phone. I would like to first note that if I set up my phone to synchronize with 'Windows Libraries', then it works fine. This is however not ideal as I have categorised my music and made playlists etc, on iTunes. When I first link my Windows Phone to the Windows Phone App (for desktop) and select iTunes from the above selection, I get the following error message: After searching that error, I found the following forum threads: Fix for error 8300300B when trying to sync Lumia 920 Windows 8 Phone in PC?   I have a Windows Server 2003 system on which passwordless access to local UNC paths is possible using the server's unqualified hostname or its IP address, but not via its FQDN -- even when the hosts file is used to map that FQDN directly to 127.0.0.1. That is: \\127.0.0.1\ - passwordless \\myhost\ - passwordless \\myhost.mydomain.com\ - brings up an authentication dialog Unfortunately, I have a local application trying to resolve UNC paths including the host's FQDN. I've tried resolving myhost.mydomain.com to 127.0.0.1 in both hosts and lmhosts, and calling ping myhost.mydomain.com at the command prompt gives the appearance that this resolution has taken effect; even so, attempting to open \\myhost.mydomain.com\ from Windows Explorer brings up a password prompt, while \\127.0.0.1\ does not. The system is using an OpenDirectory server (Apple's Kerberos+LDAP directory service) for authentication.

• Windows 7 comments field missing when browsing network

  I have just purchased three Windows 7 Professional Dell 64-bit PCs for testing prior to upgrading our company’s 120+ PCs from Windows XP Professional. The setup is a standard domain with a Windows Server 2003 32-bit server. We name each PC XP1 to XP150 so that when users join or leave, I don’t have to rename the PC. We use the Description field to allocate the user’s name to each PC. We also have a share set up on each PC using the user’s name. When I browse the network using Windows Explorer in XP, I get a useful display. The left pane showing the PC number and the right pane showing NAME and COMMENTS So, for example I would see: XP01 Fred Bloggs (Each PC on a new row.) The right pane is my main tool for administering the network. I can easily see the PC number and the name of the user. However, in Windows 7, this seems to have been thrown out of the window and replaced with fields that I do not need and in my case always display the same info. "Name", "Category", "Workgroup", "Network Location" In my case the Name column gives the PC number (XP10) etc and all three other columns display identical useless information. So I can’t see who is using XP10. When I am in “help desk” mode, I would naturally ask the user’s name and use my remote desktop client to view their screen. The user isn’t aware of their PC name, so I am finding it impossible to match the user name with a PC number. Any ideas how to overcome this "by design" change to Windows 7?

• Joining Windows 7 Professional to a Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 domain fails.

  I have a windows 7 professional (spanish) laptop trying to join a Windows Server 2003 (english) domain. It detect correctly the SRV record, finding the proper domain controller, but then the join fails with the error message (snippet, because the error is in spanish) An Active Directory Domain Controller for This Domain Could Not be Contacted The DNS is correctly set, and client can ping by name and IP the server, the server can ping the client by IP. I've tested with the FW down to no avail. A host of other XP Pro clients are connected to the domain. I've restarted Net Logon and checked that Windows Time is up. Also the times are in sync between the server and the client. I'll put below diagnostics output. I'm wondering if there's anything special to be done on either the server or the client to have a Win 7 Pro join a 2k3 R2 domain.
