• How to override [Authorize] attribute in the MVC Web API?

  I have a MVC Web Api Controller that uses the [Authorize] attribute at the class level. This makes all of the api methods require authorization but I'd like to create an attribute called [ApiPublic] that overrides the [Authorize] attribute. There is a similar technique described here for normal MVC controllers. I tried creating an AuthorizeAttribute based of the System.Web.Http.AuthorizeAttribute but none of the overridden events are called if I put it on a api method that has the [Authorize] at the class level. Anyone have an idea how to override the authorize for the web api? • ASP.NET MVC 2 project default script files. What do you use?

  Many js files are included into Scripts folder by default in ASP.NET MVC 2 Projects. I suppose developers use jquery library nearly every time they program a site, but what about other files? Please, can you tell scenarios and reasons when you: Use Microsoft.Ajax instead of jquery or mix both libraries? Do you use JQuery validation infrastructure instead of asp.net mvc one, or combine them both? Thank you in advance! P.S. there are also diferrent editions of the same file. Do you include different editions depenending on debug/release build?

  Hi I have a view that is not strongly typed. However I have in this view a partial view that is strongly typed. How do I do I pass the model to this strongly typed view? I tried something like public ActionResult Test() { MyData = new Data(); MyData.One = 1; return View("Test",MyData) } In my TestView <% Html.RenderPartial("PartialView",Model); %> This give me a stackoverflow exception. So I am not sure how to pass it on. Of course I don't want to make the test view strongly typed if possible as what happens if I had like 10 strongly typed partial views in that view I would need like some sort of wrapper.

• How to get password html helper to render password on failed validation

  I have a form for creating a new account and it has a password field in it. I'm using view models to pass data to the controller action and back to the form view. When the user enters their details in, and clicks submit, if validation fails and it returns them to the same view passing back in the view model, it won't default the password to what they entered. How can I get it to do this? Or should I even try?

• 'Caching' a large table in ASP.NET

  I understand that each page refresh, especially in 'AjaxLand', causes my back-end/code-behind class to be called from scratch... This is a problem because my class (which is a member object in System.Web.UI.Page) contains A LOT of data that it sources from a database. So now every page refresh in AjaxLand is causing me to making large backend DB calls, rather than just to reuse a class object from memory. Any fix for this? Is this where session variables come into play? Are session variables the only option I have to retain an object in memory that is linked to a single-user and a single-session instance?

  Our team is in need of a performance testing process. We use ASP.Net (both web forms and MVC) and performance testing is not currently built into our projects. We occasionally do some ad-hoc analysis, such as checking the load on the server or SQL Server Profiler, but we don't have a true beginning to end, built into the project performance testing methodology. Where is a good place to start? I'm interested in both: Process - General knowledge, including best practices. Essential list of tools. I'm aware of a few tools, such as what's built into the pricier versions of VS 2010 and JetBrains products, though I haven't used them.

  Hey... its XMAS Eve and something is bugging me... yes, I have work on my mind even when I am on holiday. The vast amount of frameworks available for PHP now use MVC. Even ASP.net has its own MVC module. I can see the attraction of MVC, I really can and I use it frequently. The only downside that I can see is that you have to fire up the whole system to execute a page request. Depending on your task this can be a little wasteful. So the question. In a professional environment is this the only way to use PHP nowadays or are their other design methods which have alternative benefits?

• Is it better to define all routes in the Global.asax than to define separately in the areas?

  I am working on a MVC 4 project that will serve as an API layer of a larger application. The developers that came before me set up separate Areas to separate different API requests (i.e Search, Customers, Products, and so forth). I am noticing that each Area has separate Area registration classes that define routes for that area. However, the routes defined are not area-specific (i.e. {controller}/{action}/{id} might be defined redundantly in a couple of areas). My instinct would be to move all of these route definitions to a common place like the Global.asax to avoid redundancy and collisions, but I am not sure if I am correct about that.

• Is this the correct way to implement .NET MVC website structure?

  I have recently seen a .NET MVC solution in which the markup in the .aspx views have a Controller as their model, and the .ascx user controls they contain use a separate model. I'm new to MVC and I wanted to find out about a few things I'm not clear on. An example of how the code is implemented: UserDetails.aspx view has markup that shows it's using the UserDetailsController.cs as the model. It contains RenderPartial("User_Details.ascx", UserDetailsModel) and passes it the UserDetailsModel. Is this the standard/correct way of implementing MVC? Or just one way to implement it? I also noticed that the classes used as Models appear to be Service classes that have [DataMember] and [DataContract] attributes on the class name and properties - what is the advantage of this implementation?

• How to properly develop and deploy features for existing asp.net applications on IIS

  My question actually consists of multiple questions. I'm frequently reading about companies who deploy a small subset of features for a select amount of customers using the live "database". Ruby on Rails and its ecosystem have deployment tools and database migrations to deploy or rollback such features in a live production or staging environment. My question, how is this done for an asp.net (mvc in particular) application? How do you test your newly released features against live data? Do you have any tools to modify the existing database and roll back changes if necessary? Do you make backups before deployment? Update Maybe I should point out that my question is not really clear, getting more answers here will help me phrase the question better. To make it easier I will describe a situation I'm commonly seeing with some of my clients. My clients have large deployments of popular web applications. They do not have staging/QA/testing servers. (yes this is not optimal). The data their apps consist of are images, xml files, user uploads and data in Sql Server. Having a few records, of their production database and a couple of dummy files is not a substitute of testing against real data in my opinion. How would you design a workflow that can create a acceptable environment to mimic a production environment before going live?

  The following text is from the book I'm reading, 'MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-515) Web Applications Development with ASP.NET 4". It gives the rundown of the Application Life Cycle. A user first makes a request for a page in your site. The request is routed to the processing pipeline, which forwards it to the ASP.NET runtime. The ASP.NET runtime creates an instance of the ApplicationManager class; this class instance represents the .NET framework domain that will be used to execute requests for your application. An application domain isolates global variables from other applications and allows each application to load and unload separately, as required. After the application domain has been created, an instance of the HostingEnvironment class is created. This class provides access to items inside the hosting environment, such as directory folders. ASP.NET creates instances of the core objects that will be used to process the request. This includes HttpContext, HttpRequest, and HttpResponse objects. ASP.NET creates an instance of the HttpApplication class (or an instance is reused). This class is also the base class for a site’s Global.asax file. You can use this class to trap events that happen when your application starts or stops. When ASP.NET creates an instance of HttpApplication, it also creates the modules configured for the application, such as the SessionStateModule. Finally, ASP.NET processes request through the HttpApplication pipleline. This pipeline also includes a set of events for validating requests, mapping URLs, accessing the cache, and more.   I set values for the Order property of the Display attribute in my model metadata.
