• Mono on OS X Compatible with MSVC 2010 peers?

  I'm to begin .NET development at work but have the option of using MonoDevelop/Mono on OS X instead of MSVC 2010 on Windows and would prefer it because of my familiarity with OS X. We are likely going to use a number of popular frameworks, such as NHibernate and Castle DI - my question to those of you familiar with .NET development and Mono: will I be at much of a disadvantage? Are there strong incompatibilities or, with some "paper cuts", the two systems are roughly compatible? Again, my colleagues will be using MSVC 2010 and we intend on working on the same codebases together. Thanks for any insight you can give to this .NET newbie. EDIT: I should note I'll primarily be doing development with MVC 2, which I understand does work with Mono, and will have some leeward in choosing frameworks, i.e. I can avoid highly incompatible frameworks.

• Problems deploying Sinatra app to staging environment

  I have a small Sinatra app with both a staging and production environment on a single server with running Nginx. To deploy I am using Capistrano and capistrano-ext to easily deploy to different locations. The problem that the staging environment always runs with the production configuration specified within the app.rb file. configure :staging do # staging settings set :foo, "bar" end configure :production do # prod settings set :foo, "rab" end I have come to the conclusion that the capistrano :environment variable within the deploy.rb file doesn't config Sinatra in any way.   So here's the deal I'm working on a project that requires me to have a 2 dimensional arraylist of 1 dimensional arrays.   I'm setting up some goals in Google Analytics and could use a little regex help. Lets say I have 4 URLs http://www.anydotcom.com/test/search.cfm?metric=blah&selector=size&value=1 http://www.anydotcom.com/test/search.cfm?metric=blah2&selector=style&value=1 http://www.anydotcom.com/test/search.cfm?metric=blah3&selector=size&value=1 http://www.anydotcom.com/test/details.cfm?metric=blah&selector=size&value=1 I want to create an expression that will identify any URL that contains the string selector=size but does NOT contain details.cfm I know that to find a string that does NOT contain another string I can use this expression: (^((?!details.cfm).)*$) But, I'm not sure how to add in the selector=size portion. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I want it to work like this Site 2 Site 2 DE Product Style But Instead it seems to work like this Site 2 Site 2 DE Product Style Where Site 2 DE is not ignored because a custom product style has been defined. How can I get the first hierarchy to work? So that my product styles do not override the language styles completely.

• How to design model for multi-tiered data?

  Say I have three types of object: Area, Subarea and Topic. I want to be able to display an Area, which is just a list of Subareas and the Topics contained in those Subareas. I never want to be able to display Subareas separately - they're just for breaking up the Topics. Topics can, however, appear in multiple Areas (but probably under the same Subarea). How would I design a model for this? I could use ForeignKey from Topic to Subarea and from Subarea to Area, but it seems unnecessarily complex given that I never want to interact with subareas themselves. Also, none of these objects are ever altered or added to by the user. They're just for me to represent information. Maybe there is a better way to represent it all?

  I have a relatively simple PHP page called editcustomers with 3 columns. The problem I'm having is that the form will show when there is a record in the database and the fields will be populated with that info. When no such records exists, the form is not even shown, eliminating the possibility to insert a record. My page layout is as follows: Column 1 shows a form containing customer information, allowing it to be edited. Column 2 allows ordering of products and showing how many products were ordered Column 3 shows the total paid so far, and the total owing. • lua metatable __lt __le __eq forced boolean conversion of return value

  Overloading __eq, __lt, and __le in a metatable always converts the returning value to a boolean. Is there a way to access the actual return value? • Issues with simple jQuery image gallery with Colorbox plugin

My problem is that image launched in colorbox stays as the first one launched and should reflect the image shown as img#bigpic - the link to the image does appear to be updating correctly. • Best practices: displaying text that was input via multi-line text box

  I have a multi-line text box. When users simply type away, the text box wraps the text, and it's saved as a single line. It's also possible that users may enter line breaks, for example when entering a "bulleted" lists like: Here are some suggestions: - fix this - remove that - and another thing Now, the problem occurs when I try to display the value of this field. In order to preserve the formatting, I currently wrap the presentation in <pre> - this works to preserve user-supplied breaks, but when there's a lot of text saved as a single line, it displays the whole text block as single line, resulting in horizontal scrolling being needed to see everything. Is there a graceful way to handle both of these cases?

• Persistent SQL Table lock from C#

  I'm trying to create a persistent SQL (SQL Server 2005) lock on a table level. I'm not updating/querying the specified table, but I need to prevent a third party application from updating the locked table as a means to prevent transactions from being posted (the table I wish to lock is the key on their transaction that interferes with my processing). From my experience the table is only locked for the time a specific transaction is taking place. Any ideas? The 3rd party developer has logged this feature as an enhancement, but since they are in the middle of rolling out a major release I can expect to wait at least 6 months for this. I know that this isn't a great solution, since their software will fall over but it is of a critical enough nature that we're willing to live with the consequences.

  I have a view that contains a calculated column. Is there are a way to cast it as a CHAR or VARCHAR rather than a VARBINARY ? Obviously, I have tried using CAST(... as CHAR) but it gives an error. • Array Indexing Properties of A Class

  I have a class that has several properties: class Person { string Name; int Age; DateTime BirthDate; } Then I have a sort of wrapper class with a List<Person>. Within this wrapper class I want to be able to do something like Wrapper["Name"] that returns a new List<string> using .Select(x=>x.Name). How do I create a wrapper class around an IEnumerable that supports mapping a string to the Property name? Something like the pseudo code below, but obviously it doesn't work. I'm 99.9% sure the solution will have to use Reflection and thats fine. class Wrapper { List<Person> PersonList; List<dynamic> this[string Column] { return PersonList.Select(x => x.[Column]).ToList(); } } This may not seem like a good design, but its a fix to eventually enable the correct design from .NET 2.0 days. As I have it right now, the data is stored in Columns, so there is actually a List of Lists within my class right now. Using the above example there would be three ILists (with a string Title) Name, Age, and Birthdate. Everything is currently predicated on addressing the columns by their "string" name. I'm trying to convert the data structure to row based with an IEnumberable interface to allow Linq eventually while still maintaining the functionality of my current code. Is converting the code to a Row based IEnumberable a good idea?

  What is a good way to provide an API client with 1,000,000 database results? We are cureently using PostgreSQL. A few suggested methods: Paging using Cursors Paging using random numbers ( Add "GREATER THAN ORDER BY " to each query ) Save information to a file and let the client download it Iterate through results, then POST the data to the client server Return only keys to the client, then let the client request the objects from Cloud files like Amazon S3 (still may require paging just to get the file names ). What haven't I thought of that is stupidly simple and way better than any of these options?

• Get averages from pre-aggregated reports in mongodb

  I've got a database with pre-aggregated metrics similar to the one outlined in this use case: http://docs.mongodb.org/manual/use-cases/pre-aggregated-reports/ I have a daily collection with a subdocument for hour and minute metrics, and a 'metadata.date' entry for midnight on the day it represents. I also have a monthly collection with a day subdocument for each day. If I want to get an average of a metric over the past eight or so days how can I do that with the aggregation framework? Is the aggregation framework not the right tool for this since it's already pre-aggregated?

• What should I do or learn to better prepare myself for a co-op position?

  I'm currently taking computer systems in a technical institute and I will start looking for a coop job by next September. Since summer vacation is only a few weeks away, I was wondering what I should learn or do to help me land a job and do well in it. I'm pretty sure I'm ahead of most of my classmates since I got around 1.5 years "head start." For now, I'm planning to learn how to use source control (git - for no reason really) and was actually thinking of learning Scheme through SICP and maybe build something nice with it at the end. On the other hand, I'm wondering if it's better to expand on what I know right now and I'm thinking of C++ since I enjoy it a lot more than others like Java. Can I get advice on this? thanks!

• How to remove words based on a word count

This description can be up to 1000 characters long, but we only want to display a short view of this. So I coded up the following, but I'm having trouble in actually removing the number of words after the regular expression finds the total count of words. • Correct CSS inheritance behavior for properties that aren't inherited?

  So say we you have a CSS property that is not inherited by default. We'll call it "foo" and its default value is "black". Then we make the following html. <div id="div1" style="foo: red;"> <div id="div2"> <div id="div3" style="foo: inherit;"> </div> </div> </div> Since this property does not inherit by default, you'd think that in div2, "foo" must be "black" - the default value because it does not inherit by default. But ... in div3 should the value for "foo" inherit "black" from its parent that did not inherit foo, or should it inherit "red" from its grandparent because its parent did not specify foo? I need to know because I'm trying to implement something exactly to the spec.

• PHP Session / Array Problem accesing

  Hello, I have a form that certain data, which then gets calculated and gets displayed in a table. All the data gets saved in a 2 dimensional array. Every time i go back to the form the new data gets saved in the array. That data will be displayed in the next table row and so on. I have used print_r($_Session) and everything gets properly saved in the array. Although i have no idea how to acces the session variables area, floor, phone, network etc wich are now in the array. Without arrays i stored them in a variable for example $phone , and did calculations with it. But now when i use the arrays, i keep on getting undefined index phone etc... How can i acces these variables, been looking at this for hours without getting any closer to a solution. Any help much appreciated. Regards.
