• WPF Control Toolkits Comparison for LOB Apps

  In preparation for a new WPF project Ive been researching options for WPF Control toolkits.  While we want a lot of the benefits of WPF, the application is a fairly typical line of business application (LOB).  So were not focused on things like media and animations, but instead a simple, solid, intuitive, and modern user interface that allows for well architected separation of business logic and presentation layers. While WPF is mature, it hasnt lived the long life that Winforms has yet, so there is still a lot of room for third party and community control toolkits to fill the gaps between the controls that ship with the Framework.  There are two such gaps I was concerned about.  As this is an LOB app, we have needs for presenting lots of data and not surprisingly much of it is in grid format with the need for high performance, grouping, inline editing, aggregation, printing and exporting and things that weve been doing with LOB apps for a long time.  In addition we want a dashboard style for the UI in which the user can rearrange and shrink and grow tiles that house the content and functionality.  From a cost perspective, building these types of well performing controls from scratch doesnt make sense.  So I evaluated what you get from the .NET Framework along with a few different options for control toolkits.  I tried to be fairly thorough, but know that this isnt a detailed benchmarking comparison or intense evaluation.  Its just meant to be a feature set comparison to be used when thinking about building an LOB app in WPF.  I tried to list important feature differences and notes based on my experience with the trial versions and what I found in documentation and reference materials and samples.  Ive also listed the importance of the controls based on how I think they are needed in LOB apps.  There are several toolkits available, but given I dont have unlimited time, I picked just a few.  Maybe Ill add on more later.  The toolkits I compared are: Teleriks RadControls for WPF since I had heard some good things about Telerik Infragistics NetAdvantage WPF since both I and the customer have some experience with the vendors tools WPF Toolkit on codeplex since many of my colleagues have used it Blacklight codeplex project which had WPF support for the Tile View control  (with Release 4.3 WPF is not going to be supported in favor of focusing only on SilverLight controls, so I dropped that from the comparison) Click Here to Download the WPF Control Toolkits Comparison Hopefully this helps someone out there.  Feel free to post a comment on your experiences or if you think something I listed is incorrect or missing.  Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Using ASP.NET Membership Provider with an ACL

  Up until recently one of my applications has used the membership provider within ASP.NET exclusively. However, it has been proposed that while the currently defined roles are beneficial, security needs to be more granular to restrict both access to certain pages and functionality present within a given page.   Unfortunately, the role based security ASP.NET gives you out of the box falls down in this area. This is not due to a lack of foresight by Microsoft, but rather it was simply not designed for implementing both role based security and any inherent ACL you may define within these roles. Mind you some would say an ACL is independent of the role to which a user belongs and is assigned to the user directly.   The application mentioned here has it's own User object (which encapsulates the membership provider user object as a property) and SQL Server table to store extended information not present in the aspnet_users table. While I could have modified the aspnet membership schema to suit the applications needs, it seemed smarter to simply create a separate table with a foreign key back to the aspnet_users table.   Since I have a separate object to store extended user information, I simply created an ACL object and expose it as a property of my user object.   This is all well and good, but it does not help in regards to the SiteMapProvider and restricting access at the page level based on the users ACL.   The straightforward answer would be to develop some code within the databound event for the menu that checks the page title and has hardcoded logic that dictates a user must have certain permissions turned on. The problem with this approach is that it's HARDCODED!!! If you need to change access to a page you'd need to do a build and go through your normal deployment process....ugh!!!   An alternative method, albeit not perfect, is to utilize the resourceKey property on the SiteMapNodes in the SiteMap file with the name of the required permission to view the page. Within the databound event for your menu you iterate the SiteMapNodes in the menus SiteMapProvider looking for a match at the page level based on title. When a match is detected, you have a switch/case on the SiteMapNodes resourceKey (the name of the ACL permission required). The case for the resourceKey ensures the users ACL permission is turned on and viola!!!   This is noteably not perfect in that it is using the resourceKey in a manner other than intended.  Since the application is not localized, using it in the manner described it not an issue.   Below is a sample SiteMap file with the resourceKey used as the ACL permission identifier:     Below is the ItemDataBound event. • WPF ToggleButton changing image depending on state

  I would like to use ToggleButton in following way: There are 5 different images and each of them should be displayed depending on current state: button disabled button enabled, unchecked button enabled, unchecked, pointed by mouse cursor button enabled, checked button enabled, checked, pointed by mouse cursor I've found a simple example with two images on http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/wpf/thread/28c36bd2-2ef7-4232-9976-2a0967140e32 , but how to change the image depending on "checked" property? The second question: how can I avoid creating different styles for each button in my application? I'm using about 20 different buttons and each of them has different set of icons. So far I'm using only one icon, below my code. • Expose UserControl property to XAML

  WPF controls have certain properties (UserControl.Resources, UserControl.CommandBindings) that can have items added to them from the XAML of a user control declaration. Example: <UserControl ... > <UserControl.CommandBindings> ... </UserControl.CommandBindings> <UserControl.Resources> ... </UserControl.Resources> </UserControl> I have a new list property defined in my user control: public partial class ArchetypeControl : UserControl { ... public List<Object> UICommands { get; set; } I want to add items to this list like I can with resources and CommandBindings, but when I do this: <c:ArchetypeControl.UICommands> </c:ArchetypeControl.UICommands> I get the error "Error 4 The attachable property 'UICommands' was not found in type 'ArchetypeControl'. " Suggestions? - Given the comments, I've created a test control to show the entire code and reproduce the problem. • WPF TreeView Virtualization

  I'm trying to figure out this virtualization feature, I'm not sure if I'm understanding it wrong or what's going on, but I'm using the ANTS memory profiler to check the number of items in a virtualized TreeView, and it just keeps increasing. I have a TreeView with 1,001 items (1 root, 1000 sub-items), and I always get up to 1,001 TreeViewItems, 1,001 ToggleButtons and 1,001 TextBlocks. Isn't virtualization supposed to re-use the items? If so, why would I have 1,001 of each? Also, the CleanUpVirtualizedItem never fires. Let me know if I'm understanding this wrong and if you have resources on how to use this. I've searched over the internet but haven't found anything useful. EDIT: Even the memory used by the tree grows from aporx. 4mb to 12mb when I expand and scroll through all the items. Let me know thanks. This is my code. • jqGrid filtering on the client-side using "filterToolbar"

I need to use filterToolbar in order to filter the grid data, but couldn't find info if there is a default search mechanism on the client side. Is a server-side search the only way to do this? • ASP.NET 3.5 GridView - row editing - dynamic binding to a DropDownList

  This is driving me crazy :-) I'm trying to get a ASP.NET 3.5 GridView to show a selected value as string when being displayed, and to show a DropDownList to allow me to pick a value from a given list of options when being edited. Seems simple enough? No surprise there. I load the list of values for the DropDownList into a local member called _pbxTypes in the OnLoad event of the form. I verified this - it works, the values are there. Now my challenge is: when the grid goes into editing mode for a particular row, I need to bind the list of PBX's stored in _pbxTypes. Simple enough, I thought - just grab the drop down list object in the RowEditing event and attach the list: protected void grvSecondaryLocations_RowEditing(object sender, GridViewEditEventArgs e) { grvSecondaryLocations.EditIndex = e.NewEditIndex; GridViewRow editingRow = grvSecondaryLocations.Rows[e.NewEditIndex]; DropDownList ddlPbx = (editingRow.FindControl("ddlPBXTypeNS") as DropDownList); if (ddlPbx != null) { ddlPbx.DataSource = _pbxTypes; ddlPbx.DataBind(); } .... (more stuff) } Trouble is - I never get anything back from the FindControl call - seems like the ddlPBXTypeNS doesn't exist (or can't be found). What am I missing?? Must be something really stupid.... but so far, all my Googling, reading up on GridView controls, and asking buddies hasn't helped. Who can spot the missing link? ;-) Marc

• Silverlight Confirm Dialog to Pause Thread

  I'm trying to do a confirmation dialog using Silverlight's ChildWindow object. Ideally, I'd like it to work like MessageBox.Show(), where the entire application halts until an input is received from the user. For example: for(int i=0;i<5;i++) { if (i==3 && MessageBox.Show("Exit early?", "Iterator", MessageBoxButton.OKCancel) == MessageBoxResult.OK) { break; } } Would stop the iteration at 3 if the user hits OK... However, if I were to do something along the lines: ChildWindow confirm = new ChildWindow(); confirm.Title = "Iterator"; confirm.HasCloseButton = false; Grid container = new Grid(); Button closeBtn = new Button(); closeBtn.Content = "Exit early"; closeBtn.Click += delegate { confirm.DialogResult = true; confirm.Close(); }; container.Children.Add(closeBtn); Button continueBtn = new Button(); continueBtn.Content = "Continue!"; continueBtn.Click += delegate { confirm.DialogResult = false; confirm.Close(); }; container.Children.Add(continueBtn); confirm.Content = container; for(int i=0;i<5;i++) { if (i==3) { confirm.Show(); if (confirm.DialogResult.HasResult && (bool)confirm.DialogResult) { break; } } } This clearly would not work, as the thread isn't halted... confirm.DialogResult.HasResult would be false, and the loop would continue past 3. I'm just wondering, how I could go about this properly. Silverlight is single-threaded, so I can't just put the thread to sleep and then wake it up when I'm ready, so I'm just wondering if there's anything else that people could recommend? I've considered reversing the logic - ie, passing the actions I want to occur to the Yes/No events, but in my specific case this wouldn't quite work. Thanks in advance!

• Silverlight animation not smooth

  Hi, When trying to animate objects time/frame based in Silverlight (in contrast to using something like DoubleAnimation or Storyboard, which is not suitable e.g. for fast paced games), for example moving a spaceship in a particular direction every frame, the movement is jumpy and not really smooth. The screen even seems to tear. There seems to be no difference between CompositionTarget and DistpatcherTimer. I use the following approach (in pseudocode): Register Handler to Tick-Event of a DispatcherTimer In each Tick: Compute the elapsed time from the last frame in milliseconds Object.X += movementSpeed * ellapsedMilliseconds This should result in a smooth movement, right? But it doesn't. Here is an example (Controls: WASD and Mouse): Silverlight Game. Although the effect I described is not too prevalent in this sample, I can assure you that even moving a single rectangle over a canvas produces a jumpy animation. Does someone have an idea how to minimize this. Are there other approaches to to frame based animation exept using Storyboards/DoubleAnimations which could solve this? • Binding WPF DataGrid to DataTable using TemplateColumns

  I have tried everything and got nowhere so I'm hoping someone can give me the aha moment. I simply cannot get the binding to pull the data in the datagrid successfully. I have a DataTable that contains multiple columns with of MyDataType} public class MyData { string nameData {get;set;} boolean showData {get;set;} } MyDataType has 2 properties (A string, a boolean) I have created a test DataTable DataTable GetDummyData() { DataTable dt = new DataTable("Foo"); dt.Columns.Add(new DataColumn("AnotherColumn", typeof(MyData))); dt.Rows.Add(new MyData("Row1C1", true)); dt.Rows.Add(new MyData("Row2C1", false)); dt.AcceptChanges(); return dt; } I have a WPF DataGrid which I want to show my DataTable. But all I want to do is to change how each cell is rendered to show [TextBlock][Button] per cell with values bound to the MyData object and this is where I'm having a tonne of trouble. My XAML looks like this <Window.Resources><ResourceDictionary><DataTemplate x:Key="MyDataTemplate" DataType="MyData"> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal" > <Button Background="Green" HorizontalAlignment="Right" VerticalAlignment="Center" Margin="5,0,0,0" Content="{Binding Path=nameData}"></Button> <TextBlock Background="Green" HorizontalAlignment="Center" VerticalAlignment="Center" Margin="5,0,0,0" Text="{Binding Path=nameData}"></TextBlock> </StackPanel> </DataTemplate></ResourceDictionary></Window.Resources> <Grid> <dg:DataGrid Grid.Row="1" AutoGenerateColumns="True" x:Name="dataGrid1" SelectionMode="Single" CanUserAddRows="False" CanUserSortColumns="true" CanUserDeleteRows="False" AlternatingRowBackground="AliceBlue" AutoGeneratingColumn="dataGrid1_AutoGeneratingColumn" ItemsSource="{Binding}" /> now all I do once loaded is to attempt to bind the DataTable to the WPF DataGrid dt = GetDummyData(); dataGrid1.ItemsSource = dt.DefaultView; The TextBlock and Button show up, but they don't bind, which leaves them blank. Could anyone let me know if they have any idea how to fix this. This should be simple, thats what Microsoft leads us to believe. I have set the Column.CellTemplate during the AutoGenerating event and still get no binding. Please help!!!

I know that I can use a jquery plugin without much effort but I'd like to be able to keep the look-n-feel of my application consistent with that of what is already used in jqGrid. I just specify Storyboard.TargetName and it rotates the image when selected (Trigger.ExitActions is omitted to make the code shorter). Now, if I want, instead of using a storyboard, assign 45 degrees value directly, I can't do that, because <Setter TargetName="globalRotation" Property="Angle" Value="45"/>: it compiles with "Cannot find the Trigger target 'globalRotation'. (The target must appear before any Setters, Triggers, or Conditions that use it.)" error. What happens? I suppose that Storyboard.TargetName is evaluated during runtime, so let me compile it. Is it right? How to make it work with just a setter, without using a storyboard?

• How do I create Tetris Blocks in XNA with C#?

  I'm making a Tetris Clone in C# with XNA, and I'm unsure of how to actually implement the blocks. I don't think that making the shapes as images will work (because parts are removed when lines are formed), so I Have blocks to make up the pieces like This. Unfortunately, I don't know how to actually define the blocks to make the pieces, nor do I know how to manipulate them to make them rotate, etc. Edit: I would also need assistance in learning how to make the Tetris Grid too.

  Silverlight 4 has a new ContextMenu control in the latest toolkit. I can't find ANY examples anywhere on how to reliably use this ContextMenu on a DataGrid. Theres a tonne of context menus out there but I want to use the new version from the toolkit. I'd like to be able to set context menus for rows and cells. Everything I've tries ends up being bound to the wrong item in the grid after scrolling.

• Nested AccordionItem. Inner AccordionItem do not expand.

  In Silverlight an AccordionItem is inside another one . When the inner one is selected, it can not expand its parent more which is already expanded to show its own content. I tried to get around it by templating but I was unlucky. • Dataform fields won't appear

I am trying to learn how to use the Silverlight 3 DataForm control, because I need to define the DataForm fields myself in the XAML code, that is, I don't want to use the AutoGenerateFields property. My problem is: the dataform works perfectly when the AutoGenerateFields is set to true, but when I create a DataForm and set the fields manually and run the application, all I get is an empty blank rectangle where my form and its fields should be. I want to place a grid at the center of this layout, meaning at the center of the browser' viewport. How to do that with smartGWT layouts? setLayoutAlign(Alignment.CENTER) This places the controls center to the layout's breadth axis. But if I nest HLayout and VLayout it is not giving desired result.

  I m using SPGridView , i want to fill textboxes with the SPGridview Selected Row Data on a button click event. Does Anyone know how to do that? my code: txtCode= SPGridView.SelectedRow.Cell[1].Text; but on debugging it shows Cell[1] is empty but it showing data in the Grid. Any Idea? Thanks SAAD
