• Can a plug-in access a database server?

  At my work place, we use an external client's web application monitor and respond to support tickets of our clients. the problem with that application is that it does not house a field to enter the actual effort (hours worked on a particular ticket) to be stored in the database. What is needed to write a plug-in for Internet Explorer that would get triggered on a button click on a certain webpage and save some data in an external database? That is, if the support personnel is closing the ticket after resolving it, is it possible to invoke that plugin that asks the personnel to enter the effort spent on that ticket and store it in an external database? We can't modify the web application as it is vendor supplied and not an in-house product.

• Connection String Incorrectly Formatted [migrated]

  I'm running into some issues. Every time I launch into debug mode and hit the "Create User" button, I'm getting an exception being thrown that is due to the Connection String either being in the wrong syntax or just wrong. Using Visual Studio 2010, project is .NET 3.5 with SQL 2008 Express. This is just a personal project that I'm testing some other things with, I know this generally isn't the recommended format but for a personal small project, I don't see the point in doing it any other way. The things I'm testing actually work :) Data Source=.\SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|Data Directory|ASPAppDatabase.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True That doesn't work. Data Source=.\SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename="|Data Directory|ASPAppDatabase.mdf";Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True Neither does that. Data Source=.\SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename='|Data Directory|ASPAppDatabase.mdf';Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True And again, neither does that :/ However, rather than using "|Data directory| if I use the full path to the local DB file it works just fine and no exception is thrown, and I can read and write as I need. And just to cover all my bases, here is the button click event that creates the User. protected void btnAddUser_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { Membership.CreateUser(txtUserName.Text, txtPassword.Text); btnLogin_Click(sender, e); } So, what am I missing in regards to the |Data Directory|? • Wired connection to windows ISC stopped working

  I have had my Linux box connected to the internet through a Windows computer by wiring them together with a cat5 cable then the Windows is connected wireless to a router. This setup has worked since I got the Linux box but just yesterday stopped working. The changes that occurred were: I changed networking so that I was connecting the Linux box and Windows computer through a second router so during that time the Linux box went through a router to connect to the Windows computer that was still connected wireless to the first router. The Internet didn't work on the Linux box at the time they second router was involved when I removed it and directly connected the Linux box and Windows the Internet worked again. Another thing that changed was that I had disconnected my Windows computer from all network connections and deleted them to make my Ethernet work better. Also at that time my dad had I connect the Windows to a third router and changed some settings in it. After reconnecting this time the connection between the router and the windows would not establish. If anyone has any ideas as to why this is I would greatly appreciate it!

• Wired Connection Problem

  After upgrading to 12.04 my interent connection no longer works. More precisely it is really, really, slow, and occasionally will connect, but do so only for a few moments and then disappear again. I am on a Lenovo Workstation e20. • Where does UBB store its settings?

  We're moving a UBB forum from one host to another. (This is temporary; we're going to replace the forum eventually, but moving hosts has a higher priority.) We don't have a lot of experience with UBB, so we're feeling our way along in the dark. We got the UBB code installed on the new host, and we've done a dry-run database export from the original site to the new site. However, almost everything set in UBB's Control Panel section didn't come with the database export. If UBB doesn't store this data in the database, where is it stored? And if it is in the database, why would it not show up in a new forum when the database is imported? Did we somehow miss a table?

• Should I create an Enum mapping to my database table

  I have a database table containing a list of systems relevant to the tool I am building, mostly in-house applications, or third-party systems we receive data from. This table is added to infrequently, approx every 2 months. One of these systems is Windows itself, which is where we store our users' LANs, and I now need to explicitly reference the ID relating to Windows to query for user name, team etc. I know it would be bad practice to embed the ID itself into the code, so my question is what would be the best way to avoid this? I'm assuming my options are: create a global constant representing this ID create a global enum containing all systems now create a global enum and add systems to it as & when they are required in the code retrieve the ID from the database based on system name I appreciate this may seem a trivial question, but I am going to have many situations like this during the course of this build, and although we are in complete control of the database I would like to conform to best practice as far as possible.   I'm developing a simple multi-player puzzle game in Java. Both players should be able to view the same game board on his own computer. Then, when one player makes an action in the game (ex. drags an object onto a coordinate space), the game's view should update automatically on the other computer's game screen. I'd like all this to happen over the internet, not requiring both computers to be on the same LAN connection. If I need to use SQL/PHP to accomplish this, I'm unsure how to design the database to accomplish something as simple as the following: Player A drags element onscreen Game sends coordinates of element to database/server Player B's computer detects a change to an item in the database Player B's computer grabs the coordinates of Player A's item Player B's machine draws onscreen elements at the received coordinates Could somebody point me in the right direction?

• Why would it be a bad idea to have database connection open between client requests?

  1) Book I’m reading argues that connections shouldn’t be opened between client requests, since they are a finite resource. I realize that max pool size can quickly be reached and thus any further attempts to open a connection will be queued until connection becomes available and for that reason it would be imperative that we release connection as soon as possible. But assuming all request will open connection to the same DB, then I’m not sure how having a connection open between two client requests would be any less efficient than having each request first acquiring a connection from connection pool and later returning that object to connection pool? 2) Book also recommends that when database code is encapsulated in a dedicated data access class, then method M opening a database connection should also close that connection. a) I assume one reason why M should also close it, is because if method M opening the connection doesn’t also close it, but instead this connection object is used inside several methods, then it’s more likely that a programmer will forget to close it. b) Are there any other reasons why a method opening the connection should also close it? thanx

• Problem connecting to Hsqldb via Hibernate when running a Eclipse GWT project.

  Hi, I'm trying to run a simple GWT project where I'm trying to do a simple persitence via hibernate to a HSQLDB database. The database I'm using I have been using for at least 2 years with several osgi applications without any problems. So all I done is reused the same configuration and added a simple object mapping file. The problem I have is that I get a socket creation error when ever I try to persist the object with in GWT jetty. I now the database is up and running, I can telnet to it, run OSGI projects that uses the same config with out problems. • Installing SharePoint 2010 in one machine with built in database

  It is very easy to deploy SharePoint 2010 in a single server using the built-in database. Normally one need to choose such installation for evaluation purposes. When installing with default settings, setup installs Microsoft SQL server 2008 express database along with SharePoint. After installing SharePoint, you need to run SharePoint products and technology configuration wizard which will install central admin website and creates the configuration database and content database for SharePoint sites. Limitations 1. You can not perform this installation on a domain controller 2. The maximum size for express edition database is 4 GB SharePoint 2010 only supports 64 bit operating systems. The installation steps are for windows server r2 64 bit enterprise edition. Installation steps The first screen for the installation is as follows As a first step you need to install the s/w prerequisites. Click on the corresponding link Click next, here you have to agree on the license terms. Select the checkbox and then click next. The installation will starts. The progress will be updated in the screen. This may take some time as during this process, there are some components needs to be downloaded from internet. Make sure you are connected to the internet, then only the installation will become a success. If any error occurs, it will display the error, you need to configure in order to continue. If everything ok you will receive the following success page. Click finish to exit the installation window. Now from the first screen, select Install SharePoint server. This will install SharePoint and SQL server 2008 express edition. First you need to enter the product key for SharePoint. Enter the product key and clicks continue. Now you need to accept the license agreement. Select the checkbox and click on continue. Select the installation type you want.   Now click on the standalone button. In production scenario, you need to select the server farm installation. This article only cover the first option, installing server farm is not in the scope of this article. Once you click on the standalone, the installation starts and you can view the progress as below. If any error occurred during installation, you will get the details and link to the log file. Refer log file and fix the corresponding issue and then start the installation again. If installation completes without any error, you will see the below screen. Make sure you selected the check box “Run the SharePoint products Configuration Wizard now” and click close. The SharePoint products configuration wizard starts. Click next; you will get the following warning Click yes and the configuration steps starts. You can view the progress for each step. Once completed the below screen appears to the user.   I am running ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat, and recently I am helping in testing out indicator-weather using the unstable buids. However there was a bug which caused my system to freeze suddenly (due to indicator-weather not ubuntu) and the only way to recover is to do a hard reset of the system. This happened a couple of times. And when i tried to open banshee after a couple of such resets I get the following fatal error which forces me to quit banshee.
