  • Dissecting ASP.NET Routing

    The ASP.NET Routing framework allows developers to decouple the URL of a resource from the physical file on the web server. Specifically, the developer defines routing rules, which map URL patterns to a class or ASP.NET page that generates the content. For instance, you could create a URL pattern of the form Categories/CategoryName and map it to the ASP.NET page ShowCategoryDetails.aspx; the ShowCategoryDetails.aspx page would display details about the category CategoryName. With such a mapping, users could view category about the Beverages category by visiting www.yoursite.com/Categories/Beverages. In short, ASP.NET Routing allows for readable, SEO-friendly URLs.   • ASP.NET 3.5 Routing?

    I was looking for a way to route http://www.example.com/WebService.asmx to http://www.example.com/service/ using only the ASP.NET 3.5 Routing framework without needing to configure the IIS server. Until now I have done what most tutorials told me, added a reference to the routing assembly, configured stuff in the web.config, added this to the Global.asax: protected void Application_Start(object sender, EventArgs e) { RouteCollection routes = RouteTable.Routes; routes.Add( "WebService", new Route("service/{*Action}", new WebServiceRouteHandler()) ); } ...created this class: public class WebServiceRouteHandler : IRouteHandler { public IHttpHandler GetHttpHandler(RequestContext requestContext) { // What now? } } ...and the problem is right there, I don't know what to do. The tutorials and guides I've read use routing for pages, not webservices. Is this even possible? Ps: The route handler is working, I can visit /service/ and it throws the NotImplementedException I left in the GetHttpHandler method.

  • Forms Authentication and Login controls

    I am upgrading a website written using ASP.NET 1.1 and the logic for the login page includes verifying the credentials, calling FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie() and populating the Session with the user information. I am updating this page to use Login controls and the Membership API and am trying to wrap my head around the concepts that have been changed. Most of the samples I see do not do anything on the login button event handler, so is the logic of setting the cookie abstracted out into the control? Also, how do I check if a user is logged in or not on other pages. Does it still store user information using the Session? How do I check if a user belongs to a particular role or not (Earlier, I would look in the Session object to do something like this) Is the Session a bad way of storing user info? Thanks

  • MVC2: Best Way to Intercept ViewRequest and Alter ActionResult

    I'm building an ASP.NET MVC2 Web Application that requires some sophisticated authentication and business logic that cannot be achieved using the out of the box forms authentication. I'm new to MVC so bear with me... My plan was to mark all restricted View methods with one or more custom attributes (that contain additional data). The controller would then override the OnActionExecuting method to intercept requests, analyze the target view's attributes, and do a variety of different things, including re-routing the user to different places. I have the interception and attribute analysis working, but the redirection is not working as expected. I have tried setting the ActionExecutingContext.Result to null and even have tried spooling up controllers via reflection and invoking their action methods. No dice. I was able to achieve it this way... protected override void OnActionExecuting(ActionExecutingContext filterContext) { filterContext.HttpContext.Response.Redirect("/MyView", false); base.OnActionExecuting(filterContext); } This seems like a hack, and there has to be a better way...

  • F# and .Net versions

    I'm writing a program in F# at the moment, which I specified in the Visual Studio project setup to target .Net 3.5, this being the highest offered, on the theory that I might as well get the best available. Then I tried just now running the compiled program on an XP box, not expecting it to work, but just to see what would happen. Unsurprisingly I just got an error message demanding an appropriate version of the framework, but surprisingly it wasn't 3.5 it demanded, but 2.0.50727. An additional puzzle is the version of MSBuild I'm using to compile the release version of the program, which I found in the framework 3.5 directory but claims to be framework 2.0 and build engine 3.5. I just guessed it was the right version of MSBuild to use because it seemed to correspond with the highest framework version F# seems to be able to target, but should I be using a different version? Anyone have any idea what's going on?   • .NET 4.0 project reference 2.0 assembly

    I have a project in which I'd like to use some of the .NET 4.0 features but a core requirement is that I can use the System.Data.SQLite framework which is compiled against 2.X. I see mention of this being possible such as the accepted answer here but I don't see how to actually achieve this. When I just try and run my 4.0 project while referencing the 2.X assembly I get: Mixed mode assembly is built against version 'v2.0.50727' of the runtime and cannot be loaded in the 4.0 runtime without additional configuration information. What "additional configuration" is necessary?

  • WCF - Compact Framework - Pull data from mobile client

    Hello guys, I want to communicate xml serialized objects from the server to the client and the other way arround. Now it is (probably) easy to invoke methods from a mobile client (compact framework) using WCF, but is there a way so that the server can invoke methods on the client side or some other way to pull data from the client? I know that callback contracts are not available in the compact framework as you can see here: http://blogs.msdn.com/andrewarnottms/archive/2007/09/13/calling-wcf-services-from-netcf-3-5-using-compact-wcf-and-netcfsvcutil-exe.aspx Originally I thought of socket programming and of developing this by myself, then someone here mentioned WCF. But it seems like WCF only would work in a non mobile environment as I need callbacks. Anyone can help me with this? Is it possible to develop a two way communication with a desktop server and multiple mobile clients using WCF, or will I have to do socket programming? Thanks for any advice or any kind of help!

  • ASP.NET 3.5 Web Site stopped importing System namespace by default

    I have a VB Web Site project that has recently (and mysteriously) stopped importing the "System" namespace by default. I'm having to either place a "Imports System" line at the top of each code behind, or preface everything with "System", which is fairly annoying, not to mention redundant. I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the System namespace back to being imported by default. I've already checked to see that WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\CONFIG\web.config contains the <add namespace="System"/> line--it does. That was my best lead. I'm tearing my hair out. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    I'm working on versioning our database and now searching for a way to drop all stored procedures and functions from a C# Console Application. I'd rather not create a stored procedure that drops all stored procedures and functions. I has to be some sql executed from C#. I tried to drop the stored procedure before creating it, but I get this message: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: 'CREATE/ALTER PROCEDURE' must be the first statement in a query batch. Script for one SP for example: DROP PROCEDURE [dbo].[sp_Economatic_LoadJournalEntryFeedbackByData] SET ANSI_NULLS ON SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[sp_Economatic_LoadJournalEntryFeedbackByData] @Data VARCHAR(MAX) AS BEGIN ... END So I guess before creating all SP's and functions I'll need to drop all SP's and functions first with one sql script.

    Hi I am using Ajaxy Call to load the partial view. It is working fine in Firefox and IE without in Debug Mode. Anyone have similar problems with RC2? If it is not in Debug mode, it is working fine. Again, if i run it using Debug mode or CTRL+F5, it shows up the error. Appreciate your responses.

  • How to fine tune a Membership Provider?

    After all the answers to my last question about fine-tuning turned out to be more useful than I expected, I thought that I would ask another similar Question about the MembershipProviders as well. Okay, so firstly, to clarify: I know what a Membership, Role, and Profile provider is, how to implement my own, and how to configure them, and most of the things about them. Implementing a role and profile provider is pretty straightforward, because they only require simple CRUD most of the time. (A single line of LINQ is enough for about half of the RoleProvider's methods.) However, the Membership provider is a differend beast. Many of you may realize that it violates the SR (Single Responsibility) principle, because it has to do EVERYTHING related to user management. While this leaves a lot of room for customizations, it has its downsides as well. There is no information on the Internet about what their EXACT expected behaviour is, such as when should they throw exceptions or simply return null, and stuff like that. I use this sample implementation for reference, but it also contains several contradictions. For example, it uses its own ValidateUser method for checking for credentials in the ChangePassword method. But the ValidateUser also updates the user's LastLoginDate to the current date. So, does the framework expect that I set it in my own provider as well, or is it simply a mistake in the sample? The other is: the ChangePassword method throws an exception every time when validating the new password, but CreateUser doesn't ever throw an exception, it simply returns false. And last, but not least: it counts the invalid password attempts of the user and locks them if it passes a threshold. While this is good, but it requires manual action to unlock the users. Is it a problem if my provider automatically unlocks the user after a certain amount of time? (EDIT) I almost forgot: the CreateUser method in the sample inserts the ID from the method parameter. I actually think this is bad practice, because I use inters with auto incement as IDs, so inserting them from some method parameter is not an option. Should I just ignore the parameter, or require that its value is null and throw an exception if it isn't? All in all, does ASP.NET have any assumptions about the behaviour of a MembershipProvider? Is there any documentation which describes when should I throw an exception or just return null? I also tried to find a set of generic unit tests which would provide some guidance about the expected behaviour, but no luck, I found plenty of articles about "Unit testing is good", and "How to unit test a MembershipProvider", but not one where there would be any actual tests. I have created the app and I want to have the .Net Framework prerequisite installed before however I can only select 2.0 . This wont go well since some columns in some of my grids will be arranged differently along with other problems. Is there any add-ins or something I can use to included .Net Framework 3.5 sp1 in my prerequisite list?

  • .NET Framework 4 in WPF not showing bitmap effect

    I am having a problem using VS2010 and framework version 4 with bitmap effects. If I have the code below and run it in a WPF application using the .NET Framework 4 Client Profile, the bitmap effect does not appear. If I set the framework version to .NET Framework 3.5 Client Profile (and change no code), it runs as expected. At first, I thought it was a problem in my application, but I removed the code and put it in a separate standalone application and it behaves the same. Anyone else verify that the same problem happens? What is happening here?   • Is using jquery to call a WCF Data Service from the UI violating the MVC pattern.

    I'm fairly new to ASP.Net MVC 2 and understand the MVC pattern in itself. But my question is what's the best way to populate dropdownlists in the UI sticking to the MVC pattern. Should I be going through the controller? Every article I've seen to do this shows how to do it using javascript and jquery. I have a test application that I'm re-writing in MVC2 I have my dropdowns working with jquery basically calling a WCF Data Service that returns JSON which populates the dropdowns. Seems to me though that this is bypassing the controller and going straight to the model therefore strictly violating the MVC pattern. Or am I missing something obvious here. You thoughts or best practices would be greatly welcome here. Thanks

  • jQuery/Javascript framework efficiency

    My latest project is using a javascript framework (jQuery), along with some plugins (validation, jquery-ui, datepicker, facebox, ...) to help make a modern web application. I am now finding pages loading slower than I am used to. After some js profiling (thanks VS2010!), it seems a lot of the time is taken procesing inside the framework. Now I understand the more complex the ui tools, the more processing needs to be done. The project is not yet at a large stage and I think would be average functions. At this stage I can see it is not going to scale well. I noticed things like the 'each' command in jQuery takes quite a lot of processing time. Have others experienced some extra latency using JS frameworks? How do I minimise their effect on page performance? Are there best practices on implementation using JS frameworks? Thanks

  • Using RouteExistingFiles to block access to existing files even if no route exists

    In ASP.net MVC 2, I can use routes.RouteExistingFiles = true; to send all requests through the routing system, even if they exist on the file system. Usually, this ends up hitting the "{controller}/{action}/{id}" route and throws an exception as the controller cannot be found. I do not want to use that route though (I have only a few URLs and they are specifically mapped), yet I would still like to prevent access to the file system. Basically I want to Whitelist pages using IgnoreRoute. Is there a built-in way to do this? My current approach is to still have the "{controller}/{action}/{id}" route and generate a 404 when this is hit, but I'm just wondering if something is built-in already?

  • ResolveURL not resolving in a user control

    I'm trying to use ResolveUrl() to set some paths in the code behind of a custom ASP.NET user control. The user control contains a navigation menu. I'm loading it on a page that's loading a master page. When I call ResolveUrl("~") in my user control it returns "~" instead of the root of the site. When I call it in a page I get the root path as expected. I've stepped through with the debugger and confirmed, ResolveUrl("~") returns "~" in my user control code behind. Is there some other way I should be calling the function in my user control code behind to get the root path of the site?

    We happily use SVN for SCM at work. Currently I've got our binary assets in the same SVN repository as our code. SVN supports very large files (it transmits them 'streamily' to keep memory usage sane), but it is SLOOWWWWW. What asset management software do you recommend, for about a GB (and growing) worth of assets? We would prefer branching and merging (different assets & config files go to different customers).

However at work we are tied to Java for the time being, so I'm wondering this: is there a port of the framework out there for Java people like myself?
