  • Amazon AWS s3fs mount problem on Fedora 14

    I successfully compiled and installed s3fs (http://code.google.com/p/s3fs/) on my Fedora 14 machine. I included the password credentials in /etc/ as specified in the guide. When I run: sudo /usr/bin/s3fs bucket_name /mnt/bucket_name/ it runs successfully. (note: the bucket name is the same as the folder name in /mnt/). When I run ls in /mnt/ I get the error "ls: cannot access bucket_name: Permission denied". When I run sudo chmod 640 /mnt/bucket_name I get "chmod: changing permissions of `bucket_name': Input/output error". When I reboot the machine I can access the folder /mnt/bucket_name normally but it is not mapped to the s3 bucket. So, basically I have two questions. 1) How do I access the folder (/mnt/bucket_name) as usual after I mount it to the s3 bucket and 2) How can I keep it mounted even after machine restart. Regards

  • Interesting questions related to lighttpd on Amazon EC2

    This problem appeared today and I have no idea what is going on. Please share you ideas. I have 1 EC2 DB server (MYSQL + NFS File Sharing + Memcached). And I have 3 EC2 Web servers (lighttpd) where it will mounted the NFS folders on the DB server. Everything going smoothly for months but suddenly there is an interesting phenomenon. In every 8 minutes to 10 minutes, PHP file will be unreachable. This will last about 1 minute and then back to normal. Normal files like .html file are unaffected. All servers have the same problem exactly at the same time. I have spent one whole day to analysis the reason. Finally, I find out when the problem appear, the file descriptor of lighttpd suddenly increased a lot. I used ls /proc/1234/fd | wc -l to check the number of fd. The # of fd is around 250 in normal time. However, when the problem appeared, it will be raised to 1500 and then back to normal. It sounds funny, right? For example, from a web application, each user has files they can upload, but how do you limit access so only that user has access to that file? It seems like the query string authentication requires an expiration date and that won't work for me, is there another way to do this?

  • How to have SSL on Amazon Elastic Load Balancer with a Gunicorn EC2 server?

    I'm a self taught back end engineer so I'm learning all of this stuff as I go along. For the longest time, I've been using basic authentication for my users. Many developers are advising against this approach since each request will contain the username & password in clear text. Anyone with the right skills can sniff on the connection between my iOS application and my Django/Gunicorn Server and obtain their password. I wouldn't want to put my user's credentials at risk so I would like to implement a more secure way of authentication. SSL seems to be the most viable option. My server doesn't serve any static content or anything crazy of that sort. All the server does is send and receive "json" responses from and to my iOS application. Here is my current topology. iOS application ------ Amazon Elastic Load Balancer ------- EC2 Instances running HTTP Gunicorn. Gunicorn runs on port 8000. I have a CNAME record from GoDaddy for the Amazon Elastic Load Balancer DNS. So instead of using the long DNS to make requests, I just use server.example.com. To interact with my servers I send and receive requests to server.example.com:8000/ This setup works and has been solid. However I need to have a more secure way. I would like to setup SSL between my iOS application and my Elastic Load Balancer. How can I go about doing this? Since I am only sending json responses to my application, do I really need to buy a certificate from a CA or can I create my own? (since browsers will not be interacting with my servers. My servers are only designed to send json responses to my iOS application).

  • CheckPoint/Amazon VPC VPN tunnel working inconsistently

    First time poster, so please be gentle and correct me if there's Server Fault etiquette I'm missing. We have two CheckPoint edge devices at sites A & B, independently managed, connecting to two Amazon private clouds. In both cases, the two Amazon VPCs are in the same community on the CheckPoint device. A VPN tunnel exists between the two CheckPoint devices as well. Between Sites A & B and the Amazon VPC in Northern Virigina, we are unable to keep more than one tunnel up. Both will come up, but tunnel 2 will drop an hour after initiation and will not come back up while tunnel 1 is up. We believe the 1-hour period is due to IPsec phase 2 renegotiation, but can't be sure. On our side, we see the tunnel 2 remote endpoint as not responding to phase 2 negotiation. Between Sites A & B and the Amazon VPC in Oregon, we have no issues. Both tunnels are up and fail over properly. The CheckPoint gateways are using domain-based VPNs. According to CheckPoint's advice to Amazon, this won't work. Yet, in Oregon, it does. We've pursued this with Amazon and, despite the fact it's working in Oregon, they've refused to troubleshoot with us further. Can anyone suggest anything we can do to try to get this stabilized? Going to route-based VPNs is not an option for us.

    I just purchased a ASRock ION 330-HT-BD to use as my new Media Center. Sadly I still have a crappy standard-def old tube TV for the foreseeable future. The TV has Coax & Composite (Red, White, Yellow) inputs, and my new MediaCenterr has HDMI & VGA outputs. So my question is, how do I hook up the two together! All of the HDMI-to-Composite cables I have found explicitly state that they can not be used to hook a PC up to a TV. Any ideas?

    I have only an old analog TV with just RCA connectors and a coaxial/cable in/out wire. It uses no HDMI interface, etc. I would like to know the cheapest method possible where the current video footage can be transferred and made into a target digital video file format and be copyable/transferrable via USB. Are there any devices that can do this with an analog TV? Basically, how can I get something along these lines done and for cheap?P I do NOT want to stream; I want footage recorded off the TV and stored via a digital encoding of a video file.

  • Computer to Tv cable question

    Hi all. Heres my query : I have a PC with all the usual outputs and a couple of TVs in the house with inputs to connect to a computer. Now, what i would like to do is get rid of cable TV and using the input into the spliters in the basement,( ie. where the input cable from outside actually feeds the system ) have the computer become the "Cable supplier" ( so to speak ) and have the output ( via some sort of box ) from the computer, convert what is on my monitor into an RF signal that is then fed into the cables in my house and ultimately to each TV / room . I don't know if there is such an item but would welcome any thoughts you might have on such a set up. I am not into HD or the like, so the picture quality needs only to be watchable, not HD. I don't want to have to set up seperate cables to feed the audio on each TV. Thanks in advance!

    I just bought a brand new LG 42LW4500 TV with enabled 3D think its passive any how i have an option to convert 2D 3D i also got a full set of normal 3D Glases. Now today i downloaded a 3D movie (14GB) Full HD in a mkv format i hooked up my PC to my TV and opened the mkv in VLC player and what i got was 2 pictures in one screen sowing same thing. Now i am lost from here i enabled 3D but it didnt really feel like 3D. Can anyone shed some ligth on how can you play 3D movies do i need to use 2D 3D conversion on tv or?

  • Controlling TV Channel Through Computer

    I'm passing my TV input through my computer so that I can use the video stream in an application I'm creating which then outputs to my TV. E.g. Sky Digibox/FreeView box - Laptop - TV Where on my laptop I'll be using the stream in a WPF application so I can overlay XAML objects onto it. My question is, what would be the best way for me to send the signal back to the box to say change the channel for example? I don't want to have to use the remote, I want the computer to handle everything. Is there a standard cable these boxes have that could take what would normally be a remote control signal and use that as input instead? Or would I have to go down the route of looking at some sort of Infared LED to send the signal recreating the remote? Apologies if this is not clear enough, let me know and I'll try and be more precise.

  • Juju bootstrap fails with "Temporary failure in name resolution" using Amazon AWS

    I have followed the instructions over at https://juju.ubuntu.com/docs/config-aws.html to try and setup myself with a juju environment. It all seemed to setup alright. SSH keys, Gererate config, repository, adding access id and secret keys to environments.yaml file. Although my key file from aws IAM management console was called credentials.csv rather than rootkey, I couldn't find that link described in the documentation. When I give the command juju bootstrap in the testing page. It fails giving me the error: juju bootstrap ERROR Get https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/juju-gobblygookmynukmbersinhere/provider-state: lookup s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com: Temporary failure in name resolution (note I just replaced my numbers for this posting my actual terminal has my numbers in. This is my first attempt at any ec2 work so I have gone in and created new IAM profiles. What have I done wrong? Any help would be great. I think I'm in over my head!

  • How do I login once I promote my Windows Server 2012 to domain controller in my Amazon VPC?

    I am following this guide: http://d36cz9buwru1tt.cloudfront.net/pdf/EC2_AD_How_to.pdf to setup my domain controller. I get AD installed correctly, but when I do the promotion to DC, the server restarts and when I try to access it, I am unable to login using any of the local system accounts. I even created my own separate user account, but that did not help. I made sure to disable the amazon settings for renaming the machine, the machine has a static ip and has been renamed.

  • Cloudwatch alarms from Amazon AWS EC2 instance are always in UT, how can I change the alarm time zone to Eastern?

    I am running an Amazon linux AMI and the alarms that I've setup are coming in all showing UT (universal time). It is inconvenient reading these alarms and I'd like them setup to read in eastern time zone (or America/New_York). I've already set my /etc/localtime to point to - /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/New_York ln -s /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/New_York /etc/localtime But it is still sending alarms in the UT timezone. Does anyone have a solution to this?

Main "plus" for running pgsql on EBS is switching from one to another instances. Can this be the reason to be slower that /mnt partition? PS. im running postgresql 8.4 with datas/size about 50G, amazon ec2 xlarge(64) instance.

  • Stream Media and Live TV Across the Internet with Orb

    Looking for a way to stream your media collection across the Internet? Or perhaps watch and record TV remotely? Today we are going to look at how to do all that and more with Orb. Requirements Windows XP / Vista / 7 or Intel based Mac w/ OS X 10.5 or later. 1 GB RAM or more Pentium 4 2.4 GHz or higher / AMD Athlon 3200+ Broadband connections TV Tuner for streaming and recording live TV (optional) Note: Slower internet connections may result in stuttering during playback. Installation and Setup Download and install Orb on your home computer. (Download link below) You’ll want to take the defaults for the initial portion of the install. When we get to the Orb Account setup portion of the install is when we will have to enter information and make some decisions. Choose your language and click Next. We’ll need to create and user account and password. A valid email address is required as we’ll need to confirm the account later. Click Next.   Now you’ll want to choose your media sources. Orb will automatically look for folders that may contain media files. You can add or remove folders click on the (+) or (-) buttons. To remove a folder, click on it once to select it from the list and then click the minus (-) button. To add a folder, click the plus (+) button and browse for the folder. You can add local folders as well as shared folders from networked computers and USB attached storage. Note: Both the host computer running Orb and the networked computer will need to be running to access shared network folders remotely. When you’ve selected all your media files, click Next. Orb will proceed to index your media files… When the indexing is complete, click Next. Orb TV Setup Note: Streaming Live TV to Macs is not currently supported. If you have a TV tuner card connected to your PC, you can opt to configure Orb to stream live or recorded TV. Click Next  to configure TV. Or, choose Skip if you don’t wish to configure Orb for TV.   If you have a Digital tuner card, type in your Zip Code and click Get List to pull your channel listings. Select a TV provider from the list and click Next. If not, click Skip.   You can select or deselect any channels by checking or un-checking the box to each channel. Select Auto Scan to let Orb find more channels or disable the ones with no reception. Click Next when finished.   Next choose an analog provider, if necessary, and click Next.   Select “Yes” or “No” for a set top box and click Next. Just as we did with the Digital tuner, select or deselect any channels by checking or un-checking the box to each channel. Select Auto Scan to let Orb find more channels or disable the ones with no reception. Click Next when finished.   Now we’re finished with the setup. Click Close. Accessing your Media Remotely Media files are accessed through a web-based interface. Before we go any further, however, we’ll need to confirm our username and password. Check your inbox for an email from Orb Networks. Click the enclosed confirmation link. You’ll be prompted to enter the username and password you selected in your browser then click Next.   Your account will be confirmed. Now, we’re ready to enjoy our media remotely. To get started, point your browser to the MyCast website from your remote computer. (See link below) Enter your credentials and click Log In. Once logged in, you’ll be presented with the MyCast Home screen. By default you’ll see a handful of “channels” such as a TV program guide, random audio and photos, video favorites, and weather. You can add, remove, or customize channels. To add additional channels, click on Add Channels at the top right…   …and select from the dropdown list. To access your full media libraries, click Open Application at the top left and select from one of the options. Live and Recorded TV If you have a TV tuner card you configured for Orb, you’ll see your program guide on the TV / Webcams screen. To watch or record a show, click on the program listing to bring up a detail box. Then click the red button to record, or the green button to play. When recording a show, you’ll see a pulsating red icon at the top right of the listing in the program guide. If you want to watch Live TV, you may be prompted to choose your media player, depending on your browser and settings. Playback should begin shortly.   Note for Windows Media Center Users If you try to stream live TV in Orb while Windows Media Center is running on your PC, you’ll get an error message. Click the Stop MediaCenter button and then try again.   Audio On the Audio screen, you’ll find your music files indexed by genre, artist, and album. You can play a selection by clicking once and then clicking the green play button, or by simply double-clicking.   Playback will begin in the default media player for the streaming format.   Video Video works essentially the same as audio. Click on a selection and press the green play button, or double-click on the video title. Video playback will begin in the default media player for the streaming format.   Streaming Formats You can change the default streaming format in the control panel settings. To access the Control Panel, click on Open Applications  and select Control Panel. You can also click Settings at the top right.   Select General from the drop down list and then click on the Streaming Formats tab. You are provided four options. Flash, Windows Media, .SDP, and .PLS.   Creating Playlists To create playlists, drag and drop your media title to the playlist work area on the right, or click Add to playlist on the top menu. Click Save when finished.    Sharing your Media Orb allows you to share media playlists across the Internet with friends and family. There are a few ways to accomplish this. We’ll start by click the Share button at the bottom of the playlist work area after you’ve compiled your playlist. You’ll be prompted to choose a method by which to share your playlist. You’ll have the option to share your playlist publicly or privately. You can share publically through links, blogs, or on your Orb public profile.  By choosing the Public Profile option, Orb will automatically create a profile page for you with a URL like http://public.orb.com/username that anyone can easily access on the Internet. The private sharing option allows you to invite friends by email and requires recipients to register with Orb. You can also give your playlist a custom name, or accept the auto-generated title. Click OK when finished. Users who visit your public profile will be able to view and stream any of your shared playlists to their computer or supported device.   Portable Media Devices and Smartphones Orb can stream media to many portable devices and 3G phones. Streaming audio is supported on the iPhone and iPod Touch through the Safari browser. However, video and live TV streaming requires the Orb Live iPhone App.  Orb Live is available in the App store for $9.99. To stream media to your portable device, go to the MyCast website in your mobile browser and login. Browse for your media or playlist. Make a selection and play the media. Playback will begin. We found streaming music to both the Droid and the iPhone to work quite nicely. Video playback on the Droid, however, left a bit to be desired. The video looked good, but the audio tended to be out of sync. System Tray Control Panel By default Orb runs in the system tray on start up. To access the System Tray Control Panel, right-click on the Orb icon in the system tray and select Control Panel. Login with your Orb username and  password and click OK.   From here you can add or remove media sources, add manage accounts, change your password, and more. If you’d rather not run Orb on Startup, click the General icon.   Unselect the checkbox next to Start Orb when the system starts. Conclusion It may seem like a lot of steps, but getting Orb up and running isn’t terribly difficult. Orb is available for both Windows and Intel based Macs. It also supports streaming to many Game Consoles such as the Wii, PS3, and XBox 360.     So, I just got a new ENUTV-2 USB TV Tuner Box, and it works fine overall. The driver seems to be OK, but the utility provided by encore doesn't seem to be working 100% in win 7. The only real issue is that I can't mute it, or change the volume level. So I'd like to know: Is there good (free) software out there for watching TV? Thanks

I want the solution to work with bluetooth peripherals--I already have a wireless Apple keyboard and Magic Mouse. I don't want a laptop or a desktop computer, unless it's in the general form factor of an HTPC or Mac Mini. Is there a way to make this happen?

  • Amazon EC2 vs Dedicated server at Hetzner, what's the use for EC2?

    After searching the web I still can't find the reason to use EC2. What's the point to scale EC2? If you expect a huge burst in traffic, they say. OK, but what if you already have a couple of sites with good traffic, and for example medium reserved EC2 instance is not enough. You are paying $36.60(medium reserved for 1year) in EU(Ireland) + traffic + optional expenses for databases and S3 if you use them. Of course as some point when you are under $56.6-$66.1 you can optimize your hosting costs with Amazon EC2. But when you get at some point if purchase EX4 server from Hetzner, it will surpass your perfomance needs for a long time, before you get a massive traffic. (I am wrong?) CPU: i7-2600 Quadcore (3.4-3.8 Ghz) RAM: 16 GB HDD: 2x3 TB SATA (6 Gbit/s) - I think that disc performance of a dedicated is better then of Amazon EBS Traffic: 10 TiB in month included. This is what you get from Hetzner for $56(- 19% VAT) or $66 for EU residents. Please, tell me what's the reason to use Amazon? Which load won't a server from Hetzner take, but Amazon Auto Scaling will? The maintenance of dedicated vs EC2 is still the same? Or hardware failure at Amazon, won't ruin your EBS storage? I'm still not at the level when I need expensive hosting, but want to know beforehand, just to be sure if Amazon infrastructure is better then pure performance of Hetzner's hardware.
