  • Should Exterrnal USB hard drive auto mount Ubuntu 12.04.01 LTS

    I want to have external USB hard drives automatically mounted when plugged in. I have 2 drives exactly the same except for volume label. They both have the same UUID. I want to be easily able to swap them as I'm using them for backups and want to keep 1 at home for off site backup. I've set up the /etc/fstab so they should mount at different places based on their volume label: /etc/fstab : LABEL=Passport1 /media/Passport1 ntfs defaults,windows_names,locale=en_US.utf8 0 0 LABEL=Passport2 /media/Passport2 ntfs defaults,windows_names,locale=en_US.utf8 0 0 blkid shows : ... /dev/sdc1: LABEL="Passport2" UUID="4E1AEA7B1AEA6007" TYPE="ntfs" /dev/sdd1: LABEL="Passport1" UUID="4E1AEA7B1AEA6007" TYPE="ntfs" They both mount automatically during reboot but do not mount when just plugged in to a running system. I've read lots of stuff about this, much of it is old so I'm not sure if it applies. I've read some stuff that says the mounts should happen automatically when plugged in, and lots of other stuff that says you have to install other software to make this happen, although much of it just seems to set up the fstab. What's the real story?   • Not getting auto login page on my Hathway internet connection

    I am using firefox browser and my laptop is DELL Inspiron 1545. I am using Hathway internet connection. When i switch on my internet modem and try to use(browse any website), for the first time in a day it will redirect me to Hathway's login(something like "login.hatyway.com/.....") page automatically. It is working fine in windows but not in Ubuntu 11.10. So I go back to windows every time and then login and then i come back to ubuntu to use. Could you please let me know if there is a solution to this problem.

  • Empathy auto accept group chat invite

    I'm using empathy 2.34.0 as chat client for account hosted on Google app (server talk.google.com). I'm happy with the features that empathy provides and integration with Google chat, however for group chat when the request is received I need to click on "join" button showed in popup to get started. This makes sense but I would to know if there is any way to automatically join the chat room without clicking the "join" button as I use it only with trusted uses. Besides the messages shared after the invite request and before my entry to chat room is not accessible to me. I looked around the empathy settings but couldn't find anything useful, wondering if I can get some help from here. Thanks.

But I am researching how to have the following features when taking screen shots of the selected area: (1) The final output should be automatically saved to a location, for example on the desktop. (This feature is available in Mac OSX) (2) A filter (such as drop down shadow) should be automatically applied to the image. The above should happen as soon as the selection is done, without poping up any dialogs and expecting any inputs from the user.

    I have registered with dyndns domain for my dynamically changing public ip address to use with iptable rules. On a server I've allowed some ports for this domain in the iptables configuration like the below entries: -A INPUT -s mycompany.dyndns.com -p tcp -m tcp --dport 22 -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -s mycompany.dyndns.com -p tcp -m tcp --dport 3306 -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -s mycompany.dyndns.com -p tcp -m tcp --dport 21 -j ACCEPT But when ever my modem restarts, I couldn't connect to these allowed ports as public ip changes with modem restart and are not updated in the iptables on the server. Is there any option to automatically update iptable rules on server.

    Do I need to post another thread for the same? If so, sorry. Yes, I saw that it's been well over six months but I have the same router SmartAX MT880d with ethernet, and the exact same problem, that is no internet even though I can successfully reach the modem settings page by entering 192.168.1.1 in Firefox. Sorry if I don't use the right (technical) terminology to express my issue. English is not my mother tongue. I'm a total beginner with ubuntu. My internet works great in Windows but does not work in Ubuntu. For 2 weeks, I've kept reading on the web and forums and the ubuntuguide.org to name a few but to no avail. Now I see no other solution but to ask for help. My problem is that as a beginner, I can't find a way to put the right digits in the right place because I don't know what numbers I need to put in what files (eg: do I need to use DHCP? or a static IP address? No clue whatsoever. I'm confused between putting figures in the wrong spaces. For example, is the modem/router's IP exactly 192.168.1.1 for Huawei Smart AXMT880d modem?? Is the subnet 255.255.255.0? Gateway 192.168.1.1. I'm confused as I can also see a different IP starting with 155131*** (is it an account number? no clue again) on my contract with Huawei (a Chinese ISP). Apart from calling 911, what other numbers do I need to put in and where? How do I check that all the numbers have been entered correctly in every appropriate space before trying to connect the Internet?

    I was thinking about hosting my private project on my server (i may use 'gitolite') and have a copy on my local machine as backup (git clone then automated git fetch every few minute). I want to know what happens if there is a bug gitolite or somewhere else on my server and the source code and git repository has been tampered with? Will my backup also be corrupted? will i easily be able to revert the source using the history?

    I am personalising my Gnome-Shell in Ubuntu 11.10 I would like to disable the feature to open the Gnome's Dashboard when I close the last Window in a Workspace. Edit to clarify: The dashboard is available only in GNOME Shell. The dashboard opens if you press the windows key (aka SUPER) or if you move the mouse to the upper left corner. If you close the last window of a workspace, but there are open windows on other workspaces, the dashboard opens automatically. The latter behaviour is annoying if you do not want to use the dashboard to open new windows or to change workspace. There are many ways to to both (Gnome do, Docky, keyboard shortcuts, clicking on something on the desktop, ...).   • Auto mount USB drive with permissions for all users

    I have an Ubuntu 14.04 based Media Center and I store the media files on a USB HDD. I add files to drive directly on a Mac so I have it formatted as FAT32. The problem is that after reconnecting the drive to the Ubuntu, it mounts at /media/user/drivename and only the root user is allowed access. I need several applications to have full access to this drive. I can change file permissions in the terminal but it doesn't change because of the /media/user location. I am able to manually sudo mount /dev/sdc1 /media/drivename & sudo chmod 777 /media/drivename but the mount point changes each time. Is there a way to make this drive always mount where root and other applications have access?

    I paid somebody to build me a jQuery AJAX suggestion box script a while back. It works great. Now I'm trying to learn about it enough to modify it to do something different. Right now, the script that generates the suggestions just takes the query text and does the same check every time. Now, I want to be able to pass along additional info so different things are looked for with each instance of a search box.   • How can I enable auto-updates in a Qt cross-platform app?

    I love applications that are able to update themselves without any effort from the user (think: Sparkle framework for Mac). Is there any code/library I can leverage to do this in a Qt app, without having to worry about the OS details? At least for Windows/Mac/user-owned-linux-binaries. I could integrate Sparkle on the Mac version, code something for the linux case (only for a standalone, user-owned binary; I won't mess with distros packaging, if my program is ever packaged), and find someone to help me on the Windows side, but that's horribly painful. Surely I'm not the only one who wants to provide this to users?

  • ssh over a tunnel in order to configure auto login

    I m trying to copy the id_rsa.pub key to the server. The server in my case also has a virutal machine called dev which runs on the host machine. I copied the id_rsa.pub key to the host for auto log in using this command. ssh-copy-id -i ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub vickey@host which worked fine and I can auto log in to host. I also wanted to auto log in to the dev machine. I know I can just copy the contents of authorized_keys from the host machine to the dev machine but I m looking for a command line of doing things. Creating a tunnel seemed like the solution ssh vickey@host -L 2000:dev:22 -N now when I tried ssh-copy-id -i ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub vickey@localhost -P 2000 the password that worked here was of my local machine , I expected it to ask me password of my dev machine. The above command adds the pub key to the local machine and not to the dev machine. However this commands asks me for the dev password and copies the files. scp -P 2000 vickey@localhost:/home/vickey/trash/vim . vickey@localhost's password: vim 100% 111 0.1KB/s 00:00 How do I do the same with ssh-copy-id ?

  • jquery carousel auto scroll with text and image

    I'm using the jquery carousel and I have the image auto rotating here ( http://jsbin.com/unoce/2), so the issue I'm having is the content on the left is not AUTO rotating "with" the image and the arrow selection is not either. It only works when I click the content on the left and then the image on the right along with the arrow move appropriately together. Can someone provide support so I may get the text and the arrow to "auto" rotate with the image?   • Hibernate - hibernate.hbm2ddl.auto = validate

    I am interested in how hibernate.hbm2ddl.auto=validate actually works and I am struggling to find comprehensive documentation. We've recently discovered production system was affected by http://opensource.atlassian.com/projects/hibernate/browse/HHH-3532 (Hibernate matches foreign keys on name, rather than signature and so will recreate them for you) and hibernate.hbm2ddl.auto=update is being removed from our next release. I would be quite happy to just get rid of hibernate.hbm2ddl.auto altogether and manage our database ourselves. However, not all my colleagues share this world view and some are keen to add back in hibernate.hbm2ddl.auto=validate. I'm concerned this will hit the same problem and I'm interested in finding more documentation about how this validation actually works. The Hibernate Community Documentation (http://docs.jboss.org/hibernate/core/3.3/reference/en/html/session-configuration.html) really just makes reference to the values. Does anyone have any good documentation pointers, or any real life experience of using validate in a production system?

  • jQuery UI resizable : auto height when using east handle alone

    i have a jqueryui re-sizable div. I want only the width to be re-sizable and the height to remain auto, so that the div grows or shrinks with the content. If i set it to display only the east handle and use css height:auto, after resize the height also gets set even though only the width changed. I have to set the height to auto on resize event everytime like so: resize: function(event, ui) { $(this).css('height', 'auto'); } to prevent the height from being set. Is there a better way to prevent the height from getting set when only the east handle is used?

    Can anyone please suggest how should I implement column drag and drop (with auto scroll) feature in DataGridView. I know I can use the controll's AllowUserToDragDrop option. However, since my datagridview control has relatively large number of columns, I need an auto scroll feature which follows the current drag-drop position so that users can see the destination column(s) before dropping. I have implemented the custom drag and drop feature but still I am having problem to enable auto scroll option.
