• Product Search SEO

  I am a wondering if there is a recommended "best practice" for a product search SEO. I know to create a dynamic sitemap file that lists links to all products in the site. However, I want to implement a a bookmark-able "advanced search". Should I let search engines index any of the results? Take the following parameters for a search on a make believe used car website: minprice (minimum price in dollars) maxprice (maximum price in dollars) make (honda, audi, volvo) model (accord, A4, S40) minyear (minimum model year) maxyear (maximum model year) minmileage (minimum mileage) maxmileage (maximum mileage) Given these parameters, there could be an infinite number of search combinations: Price Between $10,000 and $20,000 /search?minprice=10000&maxprice&20000 Audis with less than 50k miles /search?model=audi&maxmileage=50000 More than 100,000 miles and less than $5,000 /search?minmileage=100000&maxprice=5000 etc. Over time, there may be inbound links to a variety of these types of searches, yet they are all slices of the same data. Should I allow for all of these searches to be indexed?

• How should I manage "reverting" a branch done with bookmarks in mercurial?

  I have an open source project on bitbucket. Recently, I've been working on an experimental branch which I (for whatever reason) didn't make an actual branch for. Instead what I did was use bookmarks. So I made two bookmarks at the same revision test --the new code I worked on that should now be abandoned(due to an experiment failure) main -- the stable old code that works I worked in test. I also pushed from test to my server, which ended up switching the tip tag to the new unstable code, when I really would've rather it stayed at main. I "switched" back to the main bookmark by doing a hg update main and then committing an insignificant change. So, I pushed this with hg push -f and now my source control is "correct" on the server. I know that there should be a cleaner way to "switch" branches. What should I do in the future for this kind of operation?

• How *not* to handle a compensation step on failure in an SSIS package

Someone created a global error handler for a package that included this SQL step: DELETE FROM Table WHERE DateDiff(MI, ExportedDate, GetDate()) < 5 So if the package runs for longer than 5 minutes and fails, nothing gets cleaned up.   The other day I blogged that the version of the SQL Server PowerShell provider (sqlps) follows the version of PowerShell. That’s all goodness, but it has appeared to cause an issue for PowerShell 2.0. the Get-Command PowerShell command-let returns an error (Object reference not set to an instance of an object) if you are using PowerShell 2.0 and sqlps – it’s a known bug, and I’m happy to report that it is fixed in SP2 for SQL Server 2008 – something that will released soon. • SEO and unique IDs in urls

  I have a web site who's home page is at http://domain.com when a new user first hits the web site I'm creating a unique id of 5 chars for them (for example 'abcde' and redirecting them to http://domain.com/abcde so they can later bookmark and return to their workspace. My question is what's the best approach for SEO purposes, I need the main url domain.com to be indexed but google will also get the redirect and will not index the main page. I know about canonical urls, but this applies only when the domain.com url does not redirect also should I use 301 or 302 code in the redirect ?

• On github (gist) what is the star-button used for?

  On github::gist what is the star-button used for? For example here: https://gist.github.com/1372818 I have 3 Buttons in the headline, they are edit download (un)star With the last one changing from star to unstar. My first idea was: Upvote system. But I can star my own code, and I didn't mention some star appearing somewhere. Next idea: a favorite, a bookmark. I can select 'starred gists' but the page came up even before I starred it. Reading the Help didn't let me find something about 'star', and the searchbox is for searching in code, in pages - not to search the helppages of github::gist.
