  As with a lot of blogs, unfortunately over the last 6 months our blog has been feeling some what neglected, the good news, is this has been due to us going from strength to strength :)In the last 6 months we have developed 5 more Microsites for Microsoft, we have helped a London agency fix a dire Umbraco implementation for a global drinks brand, built a great site for a famous food product range and most recently we are working with DairyMaster in Ireland building them a new website for their global distribution network and over the next couple of months we will be launching their new global marketing websites in 9 different languages.As well as working with these great clients, we also helped ResourceiT launch their new website in time for the Microsoft Global Partners conference.In December, Umbraco HQ launched their Umbraco Gold Partner programme, Vizioz was proud to be one of the first Gold Partners in the UK, showing our clients that we are investing our money in the product we promote, ensuring that Umbraco continues to go from strength to strength.

• Ms-PL Source Release for System.Web.Mvc 2

  Hot on the heels of the release of ASP.NET MVC 2 yesterday, Im happy to announce that we are releasing the source code to ASP.NET MVC 2 under the Ms-PL license, an OSI approved Open Source license. This continues the trend from nearly a year ago when we released ASP.NET MVC 1.0 under the Ms-PL. You can read my blog post there to learn more about the hard work that goes into such releases. • Migrating SQL Server Databases – The DBA’s Checklist (Part 2)

  Continuing from Part 1  , our Migration Checklist continues: Step 5: Update statistics It is always a good idea to update the statistics of the database that you have just installed or migrated. To do this, run the following command against the target database: sp_updatestats The sp_updatestats system stored procedure runs the UPDATE STATISTICS command against every user and system table in the database.  However, a word of caution: running the sp_updatestats against a database with a compatibility level below 90 (SQL Server 2005) will reset the automatic UPDATE STATISTICS settings for every index and statistics of every table in the database. You may therefore want to change the compatibility mode before you run the command. Another thing you should remember to do is to ensure the new database has its AUTO_CREATE_STATISTICS and AUTO_UPDATE_STATISTICS properties set to ON. You can do so using the ALTER DATABASE command or from the SSMS. Step 6: Set database options You may have to change the state of a database after it has been restored. If the database was changed to single-user or read-only mode before backup, the restored copy will also retain these settings. This may not be an issue when you are manually restoring from Enterprise Manager or the Management Studio since you can change the properties. However, this is something to be mindful of if the restore process is invoked by an automated job or script and the database needs to be written to immediately after restore. You may want to check the database’s status programmatically in such cases. Another important option you may want to set for the newly restored / attached database is PAGE_VERIFY. This option specifies how you want SQL Server to ensure the physical integrity of the data. It is a new option from SQL Server 2005 and can have three values: CHECKSUM (default for SQL Server 2005 and latter databases), TORN_PAGE_DETECTION (default when restoring a pre-SQL Server 2005 database) or NONE. Torn page detection was itself an option for SQL Server 2000 databases. From SQL Server 2005, when PAGE_VERIFY is set to CHECKSUM, the database engine calculates the checksum for a page’s contents and writes it to the page header before storing it in disk. When the page is read from the disk, the checksum is computed again and compared with the checksum stored in the header.  Torn page detection works much like the same way in that it stores a bit in the page header for every 512 byte sector. When data is read from the page, the torn page bits stored in the header is compared with the respective sector contents. When PAGE_VERIFY is set to NONE, SQL Server does not perform any checking, even if torn page data or checksums are present in the page header.  This may not be something you would want to set unless there is a very specific reason.  Microsoft suggests using the CHECKSUM page verify option as this offers more protection. Step 7: Map database users to logins A common database migration issue is related to user access. Windows and SQL Server native logins that existed in the source instance and had access to the database may not be present in the destination. Even if the logins exist in the destination, the mapping between the user accounts and the logins will not be automatic. You can use a special system stored procedure called sp_change_users_login to address these situations. The procedure needs to be run against the newly attached or restored database and can accept four parameters. Depending on what you want to do, you may be using less than four though. The first parameter, @Action, can take three values. When you specify @Action = ‘Report’, the system will provide you with a list of database users which are not mapped to any login. If you want to map a database user to an existing SQL Server login, the value for @Action will be ‘Update_One’. In this case, you will only need to provide the database user name and the login it will map to. So if your newly restored database has a user account called “bob” and there is already a SQL Server login with the same name and you want to map the user to the login, you will execute a query like the following: sp_change_users_login         @Action = ‘Update_One’,         @UserNamePattern = ‘bob’,         @LoginName = ‘bob’ If the login does not exist, you can instruct SQL Server to create the login with the same name. In this case you will need to provide a password for the login and the value of the @Action parameter will be ‘Auto_Fix’. If the login already exists, it will be automatically mapped to the user account. Unfortunately sp_change_users_login system stored procedure cannot be used to map database users to trusted logins (Windows accounts) in SQL Server. You will need to follow a manual process to re-map the database user accounts.  Continues…

  Joes 2 Pros SQL Server Learning series is indeed fun. Joes 2 Pros series is written for beginners and who wants to build expertise for SQL Server programming and development from fundamental. In the beginning of the series author Rick Morelan is not shy to explain the simplest concept of how to open SQL Server Management Studio. Honestly the book starts with that much basic but as it progresses further Rick discussing about various advanced concepts from query tuning to Core Architecture. This five part series is written with keeping SQL Server Exam 70-433. Instead of just focusing on what will be there in exam, this series is focusing on learning the important concepts thoroughly. This book no way take short cut to explain any concepts and at times, will go beyond the topic at length. The best part is that all the books has many companion videos explaining the concepts and videos. Every Wednesday I like to post a video which explains something in quick few seconds. Introduction to XML Data Type Methods – SQL in Sixty Seconds #015 The XML data type was first introduced with SQL Server 2005. This data type continues with SQL Server 2008 where expanded XML features are available, most notably is the power of the XQuery language to analyze and query the values contained in your XML instance. There are five XML data type methods available in SQL Server 2008: query() – Used to extract XML fragments from an XML data type. value() – Used to extract a single value from an XML document. exist() – Used to determine if a specified node exists. Returns 1 if yes and 0 if no. modify() – Updates XML data in an XML data type. node() – Shreds XML data into multiple rows (not covered in this blog post). In addition, people also believe that if any error severity level of 11 or higher is hit inside an explicit transaction, then the whole statement will fail as a unit. While both of these beliefs are true 99% of the time, they are not true in all cases. It is these outlying cases that frequently cause unexpected results in your SQL code. • 301 redirect and page ranking

  Say I have a site 123example.com, with roughly 100 backlinks, which has increased from a google page 27 to page 12 for my keywords over the last month and continues toward the top 10... I have another domain 123.com, which has roughly 30 backlinks, that just points to the 1st domain. I would like to use 123.com as the primary domain and use a 301 redirect on 123example.com. Would I have to start my link building back over again for 123.com or will the backlinks and PR with the 301 redirect of 123example.com transfer over to the new domain?

• ReSharper File Location

  By default, the ReSharper cache is stored in the solution folder.  It’s one extra folder and one extra .user file.  It’s no big deal but it does clutter up your solution a bit – especially since the files provide no real value. I prefer to store the ReSharper cache in the system Temp folder.  This setting is available by visiting ReSharper > Options > Environment > General. Just update where you’d like to store the ReSharper cache and you’re good to go.  Note, the .user file continues to linger around the solution folder but at least the _ReSharper.SolutionName folder is moved out of sight.

• .htaccess non-www to www rule seems to work but the URL isn't changing in the address bar

  On a joomla site, apache, shared hosting, I'm using next .htaccess rule: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\. RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=301,L] The problem is that the browser's address bar text does not change from example.com to www.example.com. It seems the redirect actually works because all the links on the pages are changed to www. And after clicking on any link from there it always continues to have www added. The problem is the first page (no matter which one) that is loaded using browser's address bar - like example.com or example.com/random-page. Solved. The redirect actually works.

• "isolinux.bin is missing or corrupt", when attempting to boot using disk in USB CD DRIVE

  I have an external CD drive which connects to USB. I burned 11.10 Ubuntu image to CD-R. The disk correctly shows me install page when I autoload disk within Windows 7. When I restart to attempt to boot from disk to install Ubuntu I get the following error for a split second before I continues to boot to Windows. "isolinux.bin is missing or corrupt". Clearly my computer knows that this is a Linux disk in the usb cd-drive...What went wrong? edit: I reburned another disk, same error

  Twitter the micro blogging site crossed the ten billions milestone on 4th of this month as per the report by GigaTweet (Site which tracks the number of tweets posted on twitter) The person who sent the 10 billionth tweet is still unknown as his profile is protected. But the 9,999,999,999th tweet was sent by one Rafaela Marques from Brazil. AS you can see GigaTweet expects just another 196 days to reach the 20 billionth marks if tweet continues with the current pace. Some of the interesting statics about rate in which people tweeted every year 2007 – 5000 tweets per day 2008 – 300,000 tweets per day 2009 – 2.5 million per day It reached an average of 35 million tweets per day by end  2009. • Screen Corruption in half the screen only

  About 50% of the my NATTY desktop screen is corrupted. Once that happens I can re-boot as many times as I want but the problem continues. If I logout and then into WINDOWS for a day I may be successful and boot UBUNTU with a good screen. The desktop is formatted correctly, there's no pixelation, rather there is a fine grained white crosshatch pattern covering the entire screen. If I open any application the screen corruption worsens eventually to the point I can no longer make out anything. I ran ram memory test w/o any errors. I have no display issues when running WINDOWS 7. Any ideas. My computer is a Dual Boot stock DELL 5150 w/3gig of ram an on board video.

  Possible Duplicate: Will programmers be around in a few years? According to the history of programming, with each new generation of software engineering it seems to become easier and easier. Machine Code - Assembly - Programming Languages - easier - more easier - etc. If this situation continues anyone will be able to program (even complex systems). Even now, most of the kids study programming at school (Pascal , VB, etc.). Will be there any jobs called software engineering in future (if everyone know to program). ....and.... What do you think about the future of software development?

• Platform Builder: Disable the USB Driver Dialog

  For a long time, Windows CE developers and users have wanted to disable the USB Driver Dialog that is displayed when an unknown USB device is plugged into the host controller.   Of course the question is always why would you want to do such a thing? The simple answer is that there are USB devices that are needed, like printers, which expose multiple functions to the bus, like scanners and faxes, which no Windows CE driver exists to support.   So the printer quietly loads a driver, but then the other functions cause a dialog to be shown. One solution is to create a USB Class driver that loads by default if no other driver has been loaded. This driver just accepts anything that it sees and then does nothing with it. Starting with the Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3 March QFE/update, the USB 2.0 driver has a registry value to disable the dialog: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\USB\LoadClients]       "DoNotPromptUser"=dword:0   Setting the DoNotPromptUser value to 1 disables the dialog. The default value is zero, so the driver continues to behave in the same way it always did unless you change this registry value.     Copyright © 2010 – Bruce Eitman All Rights Reserved

• Is there any reason to allow Yahoo! Slurp to crawl my site?

  I thought a year or more ago Yahoo! would be using another search engine for results, and no longer using their own Slurp bot. However, a couple of the sites I manage Yahoo! Slurp continues to crawl pages, and seems to ignore the Gone status code when returned (as it keeps coming back). Is there any reason why I wouldn't want to block Yahoo! Slurp via robots.txt or by IP (since it tends to ignore robots.txt in some cases anyways)? I've confirmed that when the bot does hit it is from Yahoo! IPs, so I believe this is a legit instance of the bot. Is Yahoo Search the same as Bing Search now? is a related question, but I don't think it completely answers whether one should add a new block of the bot.

• Wireless not working, no driver showing in the Additional Drivers window

  I am a new user of Ubuntu. I have a Asus Q501L laptop that came preinstalled with Windows 8, but I wanted to move from Windows and try something new, so I just decided to install Ubuntu without thinking to much about it. The problem I have is that I can't install the additional drivers. When I go to to Additional Drivers nothing appears, it just says: no proprietary drivers are in use and in small letters continues: a proprietary driver has private code that Ubuntu developers can't review and improve. security and others updates are dependent on drivers vendor.. I can't even use the wireless connection. I really don't know what to do. I tried to download the drivers from Asus, but when I tried to install them it said: an error occurred while loading the archive. Also I don't know the model of the PC wireless card. If there is something I can do to find out that please tell me. Thanks!
